STATE DEPUTY Jurisdictions in the Order with a 77.46% of intake goal. To date we have retained but 1220 of those new members in the first eleven months of the Fraternal Year. This places us 5th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions. Again to put this into perspective we should be at 92% of our net goal or 1426 members retained.
Brother Knights, A little about membership… Brothers we have just a little over three weeks to set our mark in Membership this Fraternal Year! We will have two Membership Incentives working this month. The current month’s incentive, Dad’s, Grad’s, and Holy Men and something special State Membership Director Nick Gresko has asked for. Be sure your Council Membership Director is fully aware of the contest and what is at stake for a good intake in new members. Please see the State Membership Director Nick Gresko’s article for details. Gross Intake – June 2nd numbers (New Member Recruitment) We are currently 43rd of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a 75.91% of intake goal. To date we have recruited but 1708 new members in the first eleven months of the Fraternal Year. This places us 7th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions. To put this into perspective we should be at 92% of gross intake or 2070 new members. We will have to continue to step up our recruiting pace to get back on track this month. In real numbers we will need 542 new members per month over the next month to retain our Circle of Honor status. With a tremendous effort I know that together we can make this happen. Net Intake (New Member Recruitment less Suspensions and Withdrawals) We are currently 38th of 74
Net/Net Intake (New Member Recruitment less Suspensions, Withdrawals and Out of State Transfers) We are currently 53rd of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a -20% of intake goal. To date we haven’t retained any of the new members in the first eleven months of the Fraternal Year. Again most of losses this month were due to member deaths. There was an unusual amount of deaths recorded again in May. This again places us 4th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions. Again to put this into perspective we should be at 92% of our net/net goal or +92 members retained. Again on the positive side we are 20 members short of being on the plus side and growing. Not in leaps and bounds but growing as a Jurisdiction; and we still have another month to recover more of our losses. With a good membership plan and an aggressive approach to church drives and new council development we can get back on track. It does however raise the bar each month now to try to rundown and catch up with our goals. Keep scheduling those 1st Degrees. Every District Deputy is required to schedule and conduct a 1st Degree in his district every month. Our Degree Page on the State Website should be “Busting’ Out” and overflowing with degree information. Right now I see a good number of Admission Degrees scheduled in the month of April; I should see 83. This tells me still need a little work setting up Admissions Degrees in the majority of our districts. Successful Councils, Districts, and Diocese have a good practice of frequent degree work, and I have the records to prove it. This is not the practice as laid out and requested of me rather by the Supreme Knight. We also will need each of those degrees to
be productive so everyone may help us reach our goal of 2,250 new members. State Council Finances: At the present time the State Council finances are in good shape. The audit and budget were approved by the Audit Committee at the State Convention. We are now in a transition process with new officers assuming new roles in the financial process. Council contributions to the “Voice of the Spirit”: One feature of this monthly publication needs are events, programs, and human interest events from the local Councils throughout Ohio. Any Council wanting to submit an article of interest to the “Voice of the Spirit” for publication each month should send a finished article and photo if applicable to PSD David Helmstetter. Brother Dave will then edit and decide which articles are to be include in each month’s issue. Reflections from Our Worthy State Chaplain Father Edward J. Janoch It was on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, I had an appointment with the then Worthy State Secretary, Robert F. Collins, Jr.. We scheduled a meeting to discuss the beginnings of starting a Knights of Columbus council at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, in Parma, Ohio. This council was founded on February 11, 2015, on the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. Before the meeting, Worthy State Secretary Collins ask me for a favor. If you know our Worthy State Deputy, he was waving his finger at me he said to me: “Father, would you do me the favor of being my Worthy State Chaplain?” My quiet reaction was not “oh no,” but “that is interesting.” I asked what does this opportunity entails and he gave me copy of a two-year schedule of events. I was taken aback, but our Worthy State Deputy said that I would not have to attend all of these events, for this schedule was for the events he was required to attend. I told him I would get back to him after I talked to my Pastor, Fr. John Carlin. Fr. Carlin said it was okay with him as long as I would not be away for too many weekends. I called our Worthy State Deputy and told him I would be honored to be the Worthy State Chaplain. He thanked me and told me he would send a letter to Bishop Richard Lennon requesting this appointment. I received my letter from Bishop Lennon on September 8, 2014, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. And so this is how I became your Worthy State Chaplain. As they say, “time flies when you are having fun” and time seemed to really fly. I pray that I have been able to make our 58,000 Knights in Ohio to be better husbands, fathers, and Catholics. I know that at times I had failed due to our flawed human nature, but I really hoped that us Knights where able to live out, more profoundly, our principles of
Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. I hoped that we were able to build up our families, our Domestic Churches and taken advantage of the Supreme Council’s indicatives on this program. I hope that we became more involved in our communities through our efforts in Habitat for Humanity, Coats for Kids and the endless patriotic activities our communities offer. I hope that we supported our parishes and our priests and bishops through our prayers and financial support. I hope that we increased our support for our future priest, our seminarians. I hope that we increased our efforts to defend life
through the Ultrasound Initiative and the prayer program of the Silver Rose of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I hope that we provided opportunities for our brother Knights to sacrifice our time, talent and treasure for charity through the State Council Super Cash Bonanza and our local charities hopefully benefited from our increase donations to these programs. I hope that the placement of our State Council and all Ohio Knights under the patronage of our Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of Our Mother of Good Counsel has helped us these past two years. I have been asked, “Aren’t you glad that your time as the Worthy State Chaplain
is coming to an end?” I responded, “No, I am not glad that it is coming to an end. I would like for it to continue, but I know that my time needs to end. I was able to visit and celebrate the Sacraments in all six dioceses in Ohio. State Conventions, District Deputy Weekends, State Tours, Fourth Degree Exemplifications, and Supreme Conventions let me see Knights in action dealing with Faith, Family and Fraternity. I have been able to work with very dedicated Worthy State Officers, Faithful Navigators, Grand Knights, Council Officers and Brother Knights which lets me know that our Order is alive and growing in Ohio. I will always cherish this time as your Worthy State Chaplain. If I were asked to be the Worthy State Chaplain in the future, I would respond with a resounding “Yes.” I was blessed to become your Worthy State Chaplain on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 and on Friday, June 30, 2017, I will end my term as your Worthy State Chaplain. June 2017 National Leaders That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so many innocent people. Starting in 2017 the Pope will present only one prepared prayer intention per month, rather than the two presented before this year. He plans, however, to add a second prayer intention each month related to current events or urgent needs, like disaster relief.
INSURANCE Think You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, will have in the future, or want to leave a gift to your church a life insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older. If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80, and in 2014, the issue age of our term insurance was extended to age 70. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the extensions are a great blessing for you! I can’t say thank you enough!!! I have learned a lot and this was truly an experience of a life time!!!
I Need HELP From NonRecruiting Councils Each month I put into my monthly update with all the winners, top diocese and top councils the following statement, “Remember the goal is +250 for the month. Inspector Membership
New Council Development John Brown As this fraternal year draws to a close, I want to thank everyone for their hard work and support these past two years. In some ways, the time just flew by and in others it didn’t. We, the Brother Knights of Ohio started ten councils during the past two years. The seven last year were amazing. While the process of developing a new council is not difficult, it takes persistence and dedication. I want to leave you with a few tips on what to do and what not to do to successfully start a new council. Most pastors are extremely busy and
knows we can do it! What are you going to do for June - keep the same from last or go out pound the pavement helping Team Ohio be #1 again? Will your diocese make a leap towards being #1? That is all up to you! There is still 81 councils that still have not recruited a new member since July 1st. Our Worthy State Deputy and I need these councils to jump on board and bring in a new member. If they did just think what our numbers as a state would look like. A lot of times getting that first member in is all you need to get a few more especially if you promote the Shining Armor Award. This encourages the new members to bring in a new member and if you make a big deal at your council about it trust me the new members will come!!! If you need help as a council in recruiting new members please don’t hesitate to ask a State Officer, Your DD or anyone on the Membership Team. Any of these people would be glad to help your council out. That is what we are all here for! Between now and the end of July I want to see this list at less than 48 councils that their staff will do everything they can to prevent anyone “bothering” him. When you try to contact a pastor, in person or on the phone, don’t be surprised to be rebuffed by the office staff – they are doing their job as they see it. If you are unable to reach Father that way, there is one sure fire way to talk with him – after Mass. Take no more than a minute or two to explain why you want to meet with him. If he’s interested, he will schedule a meeting. If he’s not, he now has a name, a face and a phone number if he changes his mind. Do your homework before you talk with Father. If the parish does not have enough people to support a council, consider a council that rotates between the two. The state has some very successful councils that work that way. With more and more priests covering multiple parishes, this is a very viable

Form 450 is like GOLD!!!

DVD Admissions Degree
District Deputies please make sure within 3-7 days of holding a degree in your District the Form 450 is turned in. This is extremely important because this allows us to track if Supreme actually processed your Form 100’s! If you took the time to bring in a new member the State Membership Team wants to make sure you get credit for your hard work and effort. The Form 450 can be filled on line at the State Website and then it automatically sends it to who it needs to go to. Take advantage of this!!!
Within 3-7 days of a degree any Form 100’s should be emailed to the Supreme Council at membershiprecords@kofc.org and the State Membership Director Nick Gresko should be CC’d on this email at greskon@sbcglobal.net Supreme is able to process the Form 100 much quicker this way and you have a receipt that they were sent in your sent mail. Plus this saves your council the cost of a stamp every time new members are brought in.
Worthy Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries it is extremely important that you are talking to your District Deputy and that he knows when you are planning these because he needs to submit a Form 450 and this is not happening all the time right now. Please get this information to your District Deputy so that he can do what he needs to do and to insure you get credit for the work that you are doing when it comes to degrees.

General Service Program Robert Walsh We are now into the last month of the 2017 program year. Although the State Program is over, you can still do programs to fulfill requirements for the Columbian Award, Form SP-7. This is due by June 30th. Please get them in as early as possible, just in case Supreme should return it, that way it can be fixed and returned. Elections should be happening at your council meetings, this means form 185, report of Council Officers is due by July 1st. Form 365 Service Program Personal Report, and this is due by August 1st. If you do not have all the Program Directors you can still send it in and file an amended one later.

Jeff Kiliany It has indeed been a real pleasure for me to serve as the State Church Director. In my second year as State Church Director, I already knew that I would once again hear about and become involved in programs and activities that the councils in the state of Ohio were doing to improve the Spiritual well-being of their members and for their parishes. I was not disappointed, as over 770 Church and Vocations Activities were reported by the 191 councils that hosted Church

Community Tom Forsthoefel We are in the last month of the fraternal year and your council still has time to finish the year on a high note. First and foremost, your council should be working on meeting your membership & insurance quota to make Star Council for the completion of the year. Also, if your council is in line to make Star Council for the fraternal year you will need to make sure all your administrative reports are sent to the Supreme Council along with your Columbian Report that is due by June 30, 2017. Present community activities that your council is acting upon in the month of June can be reported with the new
administration if they match the new guidelines that will be set forth by State Deputy Elect Kevin Miller’s administration. Make sure your council has 2 representatives available for the upcoming road shows in the early part of July 2017 so that you can follow the new guidelines established by the new upcoming administration. I would like to thank all the councils that submitted community reports to the state web site the past two fraternal years. The councils around the state have been very active in sharing the act of charity to the less fortunate victims and organizations that need our assistance. Many of these people and organizations would be hard up if it wasn’t for the generosity of the Knights of Columbus in the State of Ohio. We, myself included, can become better disciples of Christ by studying the Theology of the Body from Pope St. John Paul II or another program directed toward respect of one’s body. Whether through a study program for adults, sponsoring a study program for the youth, or even helping with one of these programs, we can improve the culture at our parishes and in our communities. I have promoted diaper drives for pregnancy centers throughout this fraternal year. I do hope that more councils will do this in the 2017-18 fraternal year. Another item needed at some pregnancy centers are cribs. These can be expensive for some families, but will provide safe sleeping spaces for the new born children. Please contact a local pregnancy center to find out their needs. You’re One Click Away Robert Gilliland Printing out and submitting the Council 185 and 365 Forms!!! This month of June is again where the Council Financial Secretaries and Council Grand Knights can begin processing their Form 185 (Report of Officers), and Form 365 (Service Program Personnel) forms on the State website. Council Financial Secretaries and Council Grand Knights will have access to a special Council Administrative Forms section on the State website.
At the bottom of this new page, you will see a “Council Forms” section. Click on the link that says “Council Administrative Forms” to maintain the Council administrative forms (185, 365, 1295, 1728, SP-7).
Council Financial Secretaries will have access to the Form 185 (Report of Officers) and the Council Grand Knight will have access to the Form 365 (Service Program Personnel). The Council Financial Secretary will also have access to the Form 365 to help assist the Council Grand Knight, if need be. The Form 185 (Report of Officers)

When all of the Council officers have been entered into the State website, click “Save Form” on the bottom of the page so that the selected information can be stored in the State Website. This is important because the forms are generated from the saved data. Once the data has been saved, click on “Print Form” and after a few seconds, a PDF document will download to your computer for you to print off and keep for your records. When the “Submit Form to Supreme” button is pressed, the same PDF that is generated in the “Print Form” will be (Continued on page 14)

2016-2017 Pennies for Heaven Campaign – Final Report The 2016-2017 Pennies for Heaven Campaign was completed on April 29, 2017 and Ohio Knights raised a grand total of $132,039.65. This total includes contributions from 211 out of our 382 active councils in Ohio, or 55% participation. And the total includes contributions from eleven assemblies, one chapter and one general agency. Thank you, Brothers, for all your hard work for seminarian support and vocation awareness. Keep praying for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life.

OHIO KNIGHTS IN ACTION Council #5286 Provides 2 Sonogram Machines! Geneva-Madison Council, #5286, raised over $21,000 towards a state-of-the-art, 3D/4D Sonogram machine. The K of C Supreme Council’s Ultrasound Initiative provided the matching funds to complete the purchase. This machine was then gifted to the Mya Women’s Center of Ashtabula, OH. The Mya team reports to council leaders that they have has already witnessed how the ultrasound’s imagery contributes to the change of hearts in women who come to the Judy Christen, Development Director of Mya, thanking Knights for the starter, center, scared and portable ultrasound which was replaced with the final, full-sized machine. unsure of what to do with an unplanned pregnancy. In a very short time, they have saved a dozen babies who might otherwise have been aborted. The need for a medical women’s pregnancy center that offers life-affirming options in Ashtabula County began in March 2016 for the council. A prayer request had reached a Brother Knight who in turn shared this dream at a Council meeting. God’s grace surely blessed our consensus when a Brother approached Providian Medical to see what machines were available. In their generosity, they donated and delivered a portable 3D/4D machine in time for Mya to open in September of 2016. This machine was passed on to a women's center in an economically depressed area in southeast Ohio. The full-sized 3D/4D ultrasound was delivered in late February, less than a year from the project’s start. The council’s fundraising began with its first charity golf outing, organized under the direction of the Deputy Grand Knight Tom Furmanek. Robert F Collins, Ohio State Deputy, comments during the Dedication at Mya Additional Women's Center, Ashtabula, Ohio. contributions came from Council 360, local churches, individuals, businesses and organizations, who also support the cause for life. The first Michael E. Kahanca Charity Golf Outing saw 15 Knights present for 150 knight hours during this 10 hour event. More than 20 volunteers worked more than 200 hours. The event resulted in 33 hole sponsors including Council 360 of Ashtabula, OH; Council 4212 (Jefferson); Council 5286 (Geneva-Madison) and Council 7491 (Champion). Robert F Collins, Jr., State Deputy of Ohio, was among the 80 golfers.
