EXPERT COLUMN: DIY AC TIPS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE

by Eric Crose, Crose Mechanical Heating and Cooling As the warmer weather arrives, keeping your air conditioning system running efficiently is important for comfort and performance. Here are a few DIY AC tips to help improve performance and avoid unnecessary issues.

1. CLEAN THE OUTDOOR AC COIL

One of the bad results of inadequate air flow is the indoor coil can freeze into a block of ice. The signs are water dripping and no or little cooling.

Air Flow, Air Flow, Air Flow is the key to Air Conditioning.

4. P ULL THE BLINDS OR SHADES FOR YOUR WINDOWS

On the outdoor air conditioning portion of your system, beside or around the fan, is the condenser coil. It looks like a radiator and wraps around the box. The fan on the top of the AC pulls air through the coil to remove heat with an air conditioner, or bring heat into the system with a Heat Pump.

Especially the ones on the sunward side. Reducing the amount of heat gain will help keep you comfortable.

The coil can get plugged with dirt and debris that reduces the air flow that the fan blades are pulling. Lack of air flow stresses the compressor and can actually stop your cooling.

•The display is digital, and •You don’t remember when you changed them last, or •Every year.

The coil can be professionally cleaned with safe chemicals, or soapy water can be used, or even straight hose water will help.

Try to keep the water away from the electrical components.

The whole unit is designed to be in the weather, but why test it.

Most thermostats do not tell you when the batteries are getting low. They just don’t do their job.

2. KEEP PLANTS, LEAVES, AND GARBAGE AWAY FROM THE OUTSIDE COIL Again, anything that will reduce airflow is very hard on the air conditioner. When your air conditioning system is working properly, the air blown out from the fan should be warmer than the air going into the coil. The warmer the better.

3. CLEAN OR REPLACE THE INSIDE AIR FILTER Again, air flow is the key. Whether you have a furnace moving the air, or a ductless wall unit, it has an air filter. The air filter should NOT restrict the air flow.

MORE THAN THE GAME: HOW THE OWEN SOUND ATTACK FUELS COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS GROWTH

by Savannah Dawson On any given game night in Owen Sound, the energy inside the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre is unmistakable.

Fans fill the stands, neighbours reconnect, and the excitement on the ice extends far beyond the rink. But what happens there is about more than hockey, it is about community, connection, and shared trust.

That is what makes the Attack such a strong fit for this issue’s focus. Its role in Owen Sound is not limited to entertainment; it sits at the intersection of business, visibility, and community involvement. For sponsors, that creates an environment where support feels less like an advertisement and more like participation in something the region already values.

As businesses consider where to invest their marketing dollars, many are asking the same question: why do sponsorships matter, and where do they make the biggest impact? At its best, sponsorship goes beyond visibility. It builds credibility, fosters trust, and aligns a business with something people already care about.

Few platforms demonstrate that power better than sport.

Teams create loyal audiences and shared experiences that traditional advertising cannot replicate. When fans trust a team, that trust often extends to the brands that support it.

As Greg Hoddinott explains, “Owen Sound is the smallest market in the Ontario Hockey League with a population that is over 28 times smaller than the league’s largest market but rivals our league’s largest market in support. Our team is entrenched not only in Owen Sound, but all over Grey, Bruce, and Huron counties.” That loyalty has shaped the team’s story in meaningful ways. In 2000, when efforts were made to move the franchise to Cornwall, the community responded. A group of local owners known as the “Super Six” stepped in to keep the team in Owen Sound, reinforcing what residents had long known: this small market is no ordinary one. It is, as Hoddinott describes it, a “small market gem in the hockey world”, one that earned national attention when Owen Sound hosted Hockey Day in Canada.

MAKING SPONSORSHIP ACCESSIBLE For many business owners, sponsorship can sound like a big leap, something designed for larger brands with larger budgets.

But in Owen Sound, sponsorship is far more personal, and far more strategic, than many might expect.

The Attack offers a wide range of sponsorship opportunities at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, from static ads on boards and walls to commercials, videoboard activations, contests, website placements, and social media campaigns. What sets the organization apart, however, is its willingness to tailor those opportunities to the needs of each business. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all package, the team takes the time to meet in person, online, or by phone to understand what a business hopes to achieve. Even when those goals are not fully defined at the start, Hoddinott says, they often become clear through conversation.

Depending on a company’s goals, rink boards may be ideal, or they may not be the best tool at all. That is why the real value often begins with conversation, not placement.

A PLATFORM FOR LOCAL BUSINESS GROWTH For local businesses, partnering with the Attack is about far more than visibility on game night. It is about building recognition, earning trust, and aligning with an organization that already holds a meaningful place in the lives of thousands across the region. As Hoddinott notes, sponsorship can put a business in front of more than 100,000 fans through in-arena activations, with digital reach extending that exposure even further.

That opportunity has not gone unnoticed. Interest from local businesses has grown, and with it, a shift toward more creative activations that help sponsors stand out in memorable ways.

Hoddinott points to Casero Kitchen Table’s “Risk it for the Brisk It” on-ice contest as one example of a partnership that captured attention and resonated with fans. The growing appetite for these kinds of activations also reflects the broader evolution of the local business landscape, including the arrival of new businesses and franchisees looking for meaningful ways to connect with the community.

IMPACT THAT REACHES BEYOND THE ARENA The impact of the Attack extends well beyond sponsorship packages and arena promotions. The organization has built a reputation for showing up for the community with what Hoddinott describes as a “yes frame of mind.” Whether through financial support, in-kind donations, or collaborative activations, the goal is to contribute to initiatives that directly benefit the people who support the team. One long-standing example is the Attack’s partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, which helps fund the Wheels of Hope program, providing transportation and support for residents of Grey and Bruce who need help getting to treatment.

TAKING THE FIRST STEP For businesses considering sponsorship, Hoddinott’s advice is straightforward: support something you genuinely believe in.

In a community like Owen Sound, that matters. The strongest partnerships are not built solely on short-term returns, but on shared values, long-term visibility, and a commitment to being part of the local fabric. Sponsorship can absolutely serve as a strategic marketing tool, but its greatest strength often lies in the trust and recognition it builds over time. For businesses willing to ask questions, seek advice, and explore opportunities with purpose, the first step can lead to relationships that are both commercially valuable and deeply rooted in community.

A SHARED INVESTMENT IN COMMUNITY At its heart, the relationship between the Owen Sound Attack and local business is a shared investment in place, people, and possibility. HOW RECYCLING MISSTEPS CAN COST YOUR BUSINESS MONEY

by Miguel Cardenas From improper sorting to industry-specific contamination, recycling missteps can result in higher disposal fees, wasted resources, and even regulatory fines. Understanding what counts as truly recyclable and training staff to handle materials correctly can save your business money while keeping your waste streams cleaner and more efficient.

THE COSTLY MISCONCEPTION Many businesses assume that the recycling symbol on a piece of plastic means that the item can be tossed into the recycling bin.

In reality, this common misconception and other easily fixable habits, can lead to recycling contamination, which occurs when non-recyclable items or improperly sorted plastics are mixed with acceptable items.

INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC CONTAMINATION While common contaminations, like food residue on a takeout container or mixing non-recyclable plastics, happen frequently, it is important to note that there are a wide variety of contamination types depending on the industry your business is a part of. For example, in the construction industry, contamination might look like mixed building materials, paint residue, drywall dust or insulation fibers. In manufacturing, it may mean packaging materials like cardboard or bubble wrap being in contact with adhesives or other hazardous residues.

LOCAL BUSINESSES POWER YOUTH SPORTS – AND OUR COMMUNITY

by Trent Gow This summer, more than 1,800 children and youth across Owen Sound, Georgian Bluffs, and the surrounding area will take to the fields, diamonds, and arenas thanks to local minor sports organizations. Programs offered by the Owen Sound Minor Baseball Association, Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse Association, and Owen Sound Minor Soccer Association continue to deliver immense value, not only to young athletes but to our entire community.

But behind every jersey, every game, and every opportunity is something just as important: the commitment and generosity of local businesses.

MORE THAN A GAME – LIFELONG BENEFITS Youth sports are about far more than physical activity. They are where young people learn teamwork, discipline, confidence, and leadership skills that stay with them for life. Jesse Edmunds, Minor Baseball President, sums it up nicely: “There is much more to organized youth sport than just the game. It’s about building teamwork, fostering leadership on and off the field, and seeking to ensure that every player has the foundation they need for lifelong development”.

These programs help shape future employees, leaders, and community members.

However, these opportunities don’t exist on their own.

For many volunteers, contributing to youth sports is an act of giving back to the community. We cannot overlook the remarkable generosity of almost 300 sponsoring businesses. Local businesses, many of which are members of the Owen Sound & District Chamber of Commerce, help overcome rapidly escalating financial expenses related to uniforms, facility rentals, equipment purchases, refereeing, tournaments, travel, and much more.

“Just as sports can become a staple in a child’s life, sponsorship is essential in making this happen”, says Jason Dantas. 1st Vice President of Minor Soccer. “We simply could not exist without their support” And that’s just the summer. Local businesses are equally engaged in supporting winter sports for children and youths!

OWEN SOUND MINOR BASEBALL Organized Baseball in Owen Sound dates back to the 1880s. Today, that rich legacy is carried on through a close collaboration between not-for-profit Minor Baseball and the privately operated Owen Sound Senior Baysox men’s team.

The success of our local summer minor sports programs doesn’t happen through magic. Rather, it is the clear result of the selfless commitment of about 300 volunteers.

YOUTH SPORTS – continued co-ed, with solid participation by girls of all ages. This summer, there are almost 400 participants on 27 teams in Minor Baseball’s wide range of youth programs.

and money from the Association contributed over $1 million over the past 30 years towards what is now a premier facility with 11 fields and a clubhouse.

Behind the scenes, approximately 75 sponsors and up to 100 volunteers help make the season possible. The organization also supports Challenger Baseball, an inspiring program for athletes living with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to build skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Minor Soccer has over 900 children registered this season, making it the area’s largest minor sports organization. This summer, Minor Soccer is fielding over 70 teams, including House League, Travel and Rep soccer teams for boys and girls at many age levels. The sport is supported by close to 100 sponsors and more than 100 volunteers.

OWEN SOUND MINOR LACROSSE

The evidence is overwhelming that these three local sports organizations are delivering major benefits to local children and youth and that local businesses are essential in bringing it all together.

Lacrosse, known as the “Creator’s Game,” has origins in First Nations culture. Owen Sound and area athletes began playing outdoor Field Lacrosse in the late 1800s. Box Lacrosse, the indoor version, began in Owen Sound in the 1930’s. In 2021 “Sixes”, a fast-paced, high-energy variation, was developed to fit into a shorter time frame and smaller field.

Minor Lacrosse has been a strong supporter of local lacrosse since 1939. This summer it is providing about 450 local children and youths the opportunity to learn and play on 28 teams engaged in the three versions.

The sport is supported by about 70 sponsors and 95 to 110 volunteers.

According to Minor Lacrosse President Dwight Bryant: “We provide players with excellent playing facilities, knowledgeable coaches, and the opportunity to better themselves through sport. Teams and training are adjusted to meet the needs of all players regardless of ability”.

OWEN SOUND MINOR SOCCER Local Minor Soccer, which began in 1977, is the new kid on the block relative to its baseball and lacrosse counterparts. But since its first season, it has made huge strides.

A major milestone came in the 1990s with the development of the Kiwanis Soccer Complex, built through a partnership with the City of Owen Sound and the Kiwanis Club. Volunteer-led fundraising efforts 16

NEARLY A CENTURY OF CAMP PRESQU’ILE: BUILDING STRONGER KIDS IN GREY BRUCE For generations, Camp Presqu’ile has been a cornerstone of the Grey Bruce community. Rotary YMCA Camp Presqu’ile is owned and funded by the Rotary Club of Owen Sound and is operated on behalf of the Rotary Club by the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce. Since 1929, children have gathered on the shores of Georgian Bay to experience the joy of camp — building friendships, gaining independence, and connecting with the natural world.

Every summer, campers arrive with their bag full of excitement, curiosity, and sometimes a little nervousness. For many, camp is their first big step into independence — a place where they try new things, build friendships, and learn more about themselves than they ever expected. Whether they’ve been coming for years or are stepping onto the site for the very first time, every camper begins a journey uniquely their own.

One of our favourite stories from the 2025 season is about two friends who came to camp together. One camper had already spent a few summers at Presqu’ile and was eager to share the magic of camp with his best friend from home. For his friend, however, the idea of an overnight camp felt like a very big leap as he had never spent a night away from home before.

When the big day arrived, the goodbye at drop-off was emotional. The new camper felt homesick and hesitant to join in activities. But something special happened: his friend — the one who knew camp well — took the time to understand how he was feeling. He walked beside him, encouraged him to try activities, and reassured him that camp could be fun even when the first day felt overwhelming. With both peer support and the patience, creativity, and care of our staff team, the new camper received meaningful encouragement from all sides.

By the end of the week, the camper who once felt unsure was now smiling, participating in activities, and proudly telling everyone how excited he was to return next summer. And with the support of caring staff and the gentle encouragement of a good friend, campers step confidently into experiences that help shape who they are becoming. This is the magic of camp.

Stories like this remind us why Camp Presqu’ile is such a powerful place for children. The impact of camp goes far beyond a fun week away; it plays a meaningful role in supporting young people’s mental health and development.

In today’s world, where many young people spend hours each day on screens, camp offers a true break from that routine.

According to a 2019 study in the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning, stepping away from screen-based lifestyles and into outdoor experiences helps youth feel happier, more connected, and more confident. These changes aren’t just small shifts; participants in outdoor programs often experience noticeable decreases in stress and increases in positive emotions and resilience. When youth are given the space to step outside their comfort zones in a supportive environment, they begin to see themselves differently: as capable, resilient, and strong.

To ensure generations of campers get to experience Camp Presqu’ile the Rotary Club of Owen Sound is asking for your help! In this article, we’ll explore the cost of sponsoring a sports team and the benefits, for the businesses doing the sponsoring, the sports teams that get sponsored, and beyond.

Sponsoring a local sports team can be fairly inexpensive, ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand per season, according to TeamSnap. The price of the sponsorship will vary depending on the sport, the package you pick—will your logo be featured on their website, a banner, the back of their jerseys, or all of the above? It also shows early involvement in sports to be associated with better educational and employment outcomes, as well as higher earnings and job satisfaction later in life.

JUST SAYING

BY DAVE CARR THE NAME ON THE SHIRT This spring, I was aghast — aghast, I tell you — at what appeared to be the complete and utter collapse of the Owen Sound Attack. From the start of the 3rd period of the last regular season game against the Rangers through the rout of the 4-game Flint sweep, the Attack were outscored 32 -5! Those 13 periods of hockey engendered in me all the negative emotions and unkind thoughts (and words) that flow when the home side is not just losing, but abysmally so. It happens, but still…

And yet — and yet, in that time frame and since, I have worn my own Owen Sound Attack # 21 Marcus Carroll red home jersey and worn it happily. And win, lose or draw, for 37 years, an Attack game has been a microcosm of “community”. We have gathered there to not only cheer on the home team, but to greet friends both local and from away. Watching the game, we chat with neighbours. We catch up. We notice when our seatmates are not beside us, particularly if the reason engenders concern. We gather; we are, at the game, together.

Because sports, that exhaustively sweeping singular word, is a binding agent. It’s also a leveler, the millworker, the mom and the CEO for 3 periods on precisely the same plane.

And it’s the same on Saturday morning at the Julie McArthur, or on a Wednesday night under the lights at Duncan McClel-

lan or Tom Williams Park or even T-ball at Harrison Field.

We’re all there. We’re together in a common bond. We are, in those moments, community.

My son was never much of an athlete. I am in no way disappointed by that — I wasn’t either. But he did at least start out playing T-Ball around the time he started kindergarten, and has gone to live a “dad-proud” life since!. I wish I could remember the name on the front of his shirt. I remember it was teal or turquoise and my point 40+ years on is that a business in this community committed to the idea of kids getting exercise, learning the attributes of teamwork, and being community. Sports in a town like Owen Sound, in a neighbourhood like Grey-Bruce, is — must be — community. I’m trying as I write this to try and remember if I ever said “Thank You” to the firm that sponsored my son’s team.

I’d like to remember that I must have, but, well, you know.

Minor soccer, hockey, lacrosse, softball, fastball, slo-pitch and more — when our kids and our adult neighbours hit the ice, take the field, the pitch, the vibrant business life of our community is on display right there on the jersey!

Is there promotion, advertising, commercial advantage in it? Maybe, possibly, probably but not in every instance. It’s community. It has been since and long before someone was handing out logoed shirts to my son’s team at Harrison Field.

If I didn’t say “Thank you” then for supporting such endeavor in the community, I hope it’s not too late, and it’s then maybe a good time for all of us to say “Thanks!” to the enterprises great and small for whom buying shirts and uniforms and gear is a business expense, yes, but at its heart — It’s community. So “Thank you!”
