But behind the scenes, there’s a whole world of remarkable local entrepreneurs quietly shaping our community’s success. These are the hidden gems; they are innovative, passionate, and dedicated business owners whose impact might not always make the headlines, but whose contributions make a lasting difference.

In this issue of Outlook, we’re shining a light on four such businesses. Chamber members who exemplify creativity, resilience, and heart. From unique products and personalized service to inspiring origin stories, each of these businesses represents what makes our region so special: people who care deeply about their craft, their customers, and their community.

CAFE GILOU: A TAST OF FRANCE IN OWEN SOUND Cafe Gilou began during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Owen Sound Farmers Market, bringing a slice of France to the community. Inspired by the owner’s roots in Brittany, the café specializes in galettes—savory crepes made from organic buckwheat flour. Traditionally served in Brittany, these crepes are mostly savory rather than sweet, and the naturally gluten-free buckwheat gives Cafe Gilou a unique niche for customers seeking a high-quality, flavorful alternative to standard offerings.

Part of what makes Cafe Gilou a true hidden gem is its location. Tucked away inside a professional centre on Third Avenue East, the café often surprises visitors who stumble upon it. Those who do find it are greeted not just by the aroma of freshly baked galettes, but by exceptional service, leaving many

customers pleasantly delighted, as echoed in numerous glowing Google reviews.

Cafe Gilou stands apart from other eateries in Grey and Bruce counties as the only business offering authentic galettes in the area. Freshly baked goods are prepared daily, ensuring every bite reflects the café’s commitment to quality and tradition.

Beyond the food itself, what truly sets the café apart is its personal touch—regular visitors are recognized by name, and their favourite orders remembered, making every visit feel welcoming and familiar.

Being part of the Owen Sound community has been a cornerstone of Cafe Gilou’s success. From humble beginnings at a market stall, word-of-mouth support helped the business grow into its current café location, with plans to expand to a second location at The Sands Hotel in Sauble Beach by 2026. STORY BOOK PARK: A FAMILY LEGACY OF IMAGINATION AND PLAY Story Book Park’s story begins with its founder, Gunter Greve, whose journey from Germany to Owen Sound in 1953 eventually inspired one of the region’s most beloved family destinations. HIDDEN GEMS - c o ntinue d job opportunity with Hobarts. While living there, the family spent countless days at a local park that quickly became a special place for his wife and children. Gunter couldn’t help but imagine how wonderful it would be to have something similar back home in Owen Sound.

When the family returned to the area, Gunter began working at Black Clawson – Kennedy. As he was clearing his own land, he remembered that California park and felt inspired to build something meaningful for families in his community. Already passionate about building—he had constructed several homes in the area—he decided to create a space that celebrated imagination, nature, and childhood wonder. In 1974, he began constructing Story Book Park piece by piece, opening the gates for the first time in 1975. Friends and family were some of the earliest visitors, and each year Gunter added new features, including rides he designed and built himself. Nearly five decades later, the park has continued to expand, remaining a testament to his craftsmanship, creativity, and dedication.

VISION 2050 STRATEGIC GAME PLAN: CITY BUILDING IS A TEAM SPORT From the desk of Mayor Ian Boddy

City building is a team sport.

As we reflect on the past year and the year ahead, I am struck by the significant challenges our community has met, endured, and overcome.

Responding to shifting global trade policies by shopping local. Addressing economic uncertainty by caring for the most vulnerable among us.

Working across all levels of government, industry, and community to make real impacts on our City.

We see that within city hall—staff across all departments working together to realize the long-term game plan we set together.

A few months ago, on the steps of City Hall, I stood shoulder to shoulder with my team—Team Owen Sound—as Heather Hiscox led us in cheering on the Blue Jays in the World Series, right after hosting a four-hour broadcast for CBC Morning Live Across Canada that showcased our community’s creativity, enthusiasm, and compassion.

The Blue Jays put their best foot forward (we’ll get ‘em next year!) and that’s something that resonated with me as I looked around that day. From the OSDSS jazz band and Wildflower Dance Arts to Chef Zach Keeshig, OSHARE, and our worldclass broadcasters, Team Owen Sound showed up that day, as we do every day.

We see it within our city, our residents, businesses, community groups and institutions working together to make Owen Sound “where you want to live.”

We see it within our region and beyond, from Team Grey to Team Great Lakes—our regional, national, and international partnerships.

We win by working together, and everyone—the players, the coaches, the commentators, the fans—everyone has their part to play.

On the home field, that looks like supporting our local businesses, showing up for local music and theatre, mentoring our students and apprentices, volunteering for the causes we care about, and lending a hand when you can to those who need it.

Maybe it looks like running for council or putting your name forward to sit on a city committee.

Team Owen Sound, it’s time to step up to the plate. Let’s knock it out of the park.

ELECTED LEADERS HIGHLIGHT QUIET EXCELLENCE

by Trent Gow The business sectors of Owen Sound, Georgian Bluffs, and neighbouring communities, are filled with “hidden gems”, compelling business success stories and supportive events that fly under the radar. Who better to identify some of these overlooked treasures than our elected leaders with their broad and deep knowledge of the communities they serve? Therefore, we asked Alex Ruff, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, Sue Carleton, Mayor of Georgian Bluffs and Ian Boddy, Mayor of Owen Sound, each to identify several companies or related events that are exceptional at what they achieve but are not widely known or appreciated. Each leader responded positively and in so doing all emphasized that their selection was challenging with many deserving candidates to choose from.

Avoidance of conflict of interest was explicit.

MP Ruff focused on agriculture and our farmers, “which are foundational to who we are in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. Traditions like the Desboro Fall Fair and Durham Fall Fair, both of which just celebrated 165 years, show the sense of com-munity, resilience, and legacy of our rural roots. Together, we should take note and remember to continue to celebrate our agricultural heritage. Food security is the enduring economy that is essential for our region and our country.”

Mayor Carleton cited Outrange

“Through her farm stand and a growing collection of small-batch products, Jessica blends traditional know-how with modern practicality, helping families reconnect with slow food and handcrafted living,” said the Mayor. “Outrange is an excellent example of how small agricultural producers strengthen rural economies while keeping time-honoured skills alive”.

As well, she highlighted that Olivias Ristorante “brings a welcoming, community-focused dining experience to the heart of the village of Shallow Lake. Known for fresh Italian comfort food, wood-fired flavours, classic entrées, and generous portions, Olivia’s offers both dine-in warmth and a popular takeout menu that draws people into the village year-round. The restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients and friendly service has made it a local favourite, and its presence contributes to a vibrant village core by providing a gathering space for residents and visitors alike”.

Mayor Carleton proudly added that the Township itself offers a hidden gem in the form of “Bluff Baskets” to celebrate local makers. These are seasonal collections showcasing Georgian Bluffs producers and artisans. According to Steve Warwick, President/CEO of STEVCON, “with 33 years of proven experience, we offer consolidated solutions for various industries, including military, nuclear, mining, automotive, and aerospace. We prioritize sustainability and aim for net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, offering reusable packaging solutions”. Reflecting on Mayor

Boddy’s praise, Mr. Warwick explained that “in 2021, we entered the highly regulated medical isotope market, providing 100% Canadian-made packaging for Type “A” containers with industry-standard testing”.

Mayor Boddy added that there is great potential for the isotope industry for Grey Bruce Huron. “Looking at the Research Triangle in North Carolina as a model, we pulled together the Southwestern Ontario Isotope Coalition to try to be ahead of the potential growth and ahead of other regions in the province and country. Having a key business in Owen Sound which is innovating and developing the required packaging for isotopes and then selling their products across the province and beyond is important for us and for Canada’s economy”.

by Tiffany James Tucked along the Sydenham River lies one of Owen Sound’s most defining assets—our River District. The Heart of the downtown core has been the city’s cultural heartbeat, a place where stunning architecture, independent businesses, and creativity intersect in a way unmatched by any other part of the city. Yet despite its charm, the River District is often overshadowed by negative headlines or lingering misconceptions.

The truth is far more compelling: the River District is not only a hidden gem, but it’s one of the most vibrant, community-driven areas in Owen Sound.

This sentiment captures one of the area’s greatest assets: accessibility. The River District offers an experience that simply cannot be replicated by big-box stores or commercial plazas. It invites connection between merchants and residents, between artists and audiences, and between visitors and the city itself. A walk through the River District is an exploration of one-of-akind shops, local flavours, artisan studios. The newly renovated Riverfront creates the perfect gathering place.

JUST SAYING

BY D AV E CA R R HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

I like to travel, be a tourist. Doing some pre-trip research usually nets me some great stops, some “must sees”, and, if I’m lucky, the interesting and unusual. But sometimes the greatest insight comes from the locals when I ask, “What is there here that most people overlook”? This same question is relevant to our own beautiful area. So, if a tourist happens to ask you about our region’s local “hidden gems” here are some to consider.

Moreland Place Mansion and Gardens. It’s on Grey Road 18, on the Rockford Bypass, beside Inglis Falls. In summer, creator/owner Barry More’s reproduction of a 19th century Victorian mansion and its beautiful “one of a kind” gardens are open daily for visitors. The European Gardens and perennial gardens have been nurtured and enhanced by two generations of the More family. But, consistent with Barry’s reproduction of a bygone classical era, they will not be modernized. That’s an essential part of the charm. So my advice to you and to tourists is “just go” and, while there, contribute if you choose to the simple donation box to help with maintenance.

Indian Falls. I think we all know it’s there, but fewer of us have seen it, because it’s a bit of a trek to reach, hiking up from the park at Balmy Beach It’s one of a half-dozen beautiful waterfalls in Grey County, this one a bridal-veil falls. Timing is important to enjoy its true beauty, as it’s susceptible to the vagaries of Mother Nature’s watering can. I wonder what it’s like in winter.

Beth Ezekiel Synagogue. I have a feeling that most of us glide down 3rd Avenue East past this quiet, dark red brick building with hardly a glance — it always just seems to have been there. I have no idea when it is accessible to the curious, to the inquisitive, to the scholar, but the structure itself dates back to (I believe) 1907 and has been home to Owen Sound’s Jewish Community since 1947. It’s a gem, and, reportedly, the oldest small-town synagogue in Canada. Among other things, the congregation venerates the windows of the Synagogue each of which has an inspirational meaning. The families who donated these windows are like a “Who’s Who” of Owen Sound’s history, including its commercial successes: the Fishmans, The Gorbets, The Fromsteins and more — they’re all there.

100 Good Men Who Give A Damn. This is a fairly recent phenomenon across North America (along with 100 Good Women!). In Owen Sound, the original 100 has now grown to over 200 men. I mention this as a “hidden gem” because the members just go about this deceptively simple way of giving back to their community without fanfare, without braggadocio. And they are first of all your neighbours, but they are also, retired and active, just quietly the employers and employees of Owen Sound’s commercial and industrial engines. Whether organized or not, our community is just richer when any of us “give a damn”.

Do we take our gems for granted? No, though some of them hide in plain sight. Hey, I’m here on the last page — go back now and reacquaint yourself with these delights that together are just one more aspect of making Owen Sound, as it unabashedly proclaims, “where you want to live”!
