Dr. Sanford Shugart, Valencia College President, received the Aspen award during a ceremony that took place at the National Press Club on December 12. Kissimmee, FL - Valencia College won the inaugural Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Announced in a ceremony held on December 12, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the award came with a $600,000 prize. “It is such a privilege to represent my colleagues and the hundreds of community colleges across the country that have done amazing work for years and years,” said Dr. Sanford Shugart, president of Valencia College. “The whole country is looking to us these days, it seems. Osceola County approves LSSI to manage library services Osceola County, FL – Osceola County Commissioners voted in favor of outsourcing management of Osceola County Library operations, saving taxpayers an estimated $6 million over the next five years. LSSI (Library Systems & Services, LLC) could begin operations of the library system as early as January 3, 2012. LSSI currently provides library management services across 17 public library systems and 69 branch operations in the US. Osceola County will be the first government agency in the state to outsource this service.

Kissimmee, FL - The Central Florida Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of its offices in Kissimmee, this past Thursday, December 8th. The new office is located in the Osceola Square Mall in 3831 West Vine St., Suite 61-2 in Kissimmee. The event was made possible due to the participation of its members, directors and chamber executives, along with community leaders and political officials. After the ribbon cutting, a reception took place, sponsored by Florida Technical College in its new restaurant Zazón Café, located inside the university campus at the Osceola Square Mall, this is where students can practice all they are learning in their classes. The restaurant offers an extensive variety of foods and modest prices and is available for private events.

Estoy pensando en hacerme cirugía láser en los ojos. ¿Es segura? LASIK, que significa Queratomileusis Asistida por Láser En Sitio (LaserAssisted In Situ Keratomileusis), mejora la visión dándole nueva forma a la cornea, la cobertura transparente de la parte frontal del ojo. Usando el láser, un cirujano de los ojos puede liberar al paciente de los espejuelos o lentes de contacto. Los resultados del LASIK han estado mejorando por los avances tecnológicos y la experiencia de los cirujanos. Más del 90 por ciento de las personas que se han sometido a la cirugía refractiva (de corrección de visión) no tienen que usar espejuelos o lentes de contacto la mayoría del tiempo. LASIK es una tecnología relativamente nueva. La primera cirugía láser de ojos fue aprobada en el 1998. La seguridad y efectividad a largo plaza del LASIK se desconoce.
