One of the many damaging effects that diabetes can have is on vision. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults. November has been declared by Prevent Blindness as Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month to educate the public on the effects of diabetes on vision, risk factors and treatment options. Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when blood sugar levels are constantly high which can cause serious health complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and blindness. Glaucoma – Optic nerve damage and possible loss of side vision, usually caused by increase in fluid pressure inside the eye. Election Winners 2018 Eleciones de Medio Término 2018 Condado Osceola, FL – Las elecciones del pasado martes, 6 de noviembre, se destacaron por una participación del electorado sin precedentes para unas elecciones de medio término. En una contienda sumamente cerrada el Gobernador de la Florida, Rick Scott (R), fue electo para el Senado de los Estados Unidos, derrotando al incumbente Bill Nelson (D) quien había ocupado el puesto desde el 2001. El Senador Nelson anunció su intención de pedir un recuento de votos. El Representante de la Florida Darren Soto fue electo para el Congreso de los Estados Unidos con un 58.01 de los votos. El candidato por el Partido Republicano para la Gobernación del Estado de la Florida, Ron DeSantis fue electo con un 49.65% de los votos. Su contrincante Andrew Gillum (D) aceptó su derrota.

El Representante del Estado Mike La Rosa, quien ocupa la silla desde el 2012, fue reelecto con un 54% de votos. En el Condado Osceola estaban en papeleta las sillas de la Comisión por los Distritos 2 y 4. Ambas Comisionadas fueron reelectas. Viviana Janer, por el Distrito 2 y Cheryl Grieb por el Distrito 4. Mid Term Elections 2018 Osceola County, FL – Elections of last Tuesday, November 6, were highlighted by unprecedented voter turnout for midterm elections. In an extremely close race, Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) was elected to the United States Senate, defeating incumbent Bill Nelson (D) who had held the post since 2001. Senator Nelson announced his intention to ask for a recount of votes. Florida Representative Darren Soto was elected to the United States Congress with 58.01 of the votes. The candidate for the Republican Party for the Governorship of the State of Florida, Ron DeSantis was elected with 49.65% of the votes. His opponent Andrew Gillum (D) accepted his defeat. State Representative Mike La Rosa, who holds the chair since 2012, was re-

elected with 54% of the vote. In Osceola County, chairs of the Commission for Districts 2 and 4, were in ballot. Both Commissioners were re-elected. Viviana Janer, for District 2 and Cheryl Grieb for District 4. Chair 2 of the Kissimmee City Commission was awarded to Feliz Ortiz. County Commissioners Cheryl Grieb and Viviana Janer will be sworn in on Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Osceola County Commissioners office. Orlando, FL - El viernes 2, de noviembre en el Consulado de México en Orlando se celebró la tradicional fiesta de Día de Muertos; tradición mexicana, con sabores latinos. El Cónsul de México en Orlando, Juan Sabines, resaltó la participación de Colombia, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana y Venezuela. La tradición del Día de Muertos se mantiene vigente no sólo en México, sino en Estados Unidos. Hubo una exhibición y concurso de Altares y Ofrendas, así como el pan de muerto, el champurrado, los tamales y el dulce de calabaza. El Cónsul de México en Orlando, Juan Sabines, dio la bienvenida a autoridades, líderes comunitarios y a la comunidad mexicana, hispana y americana, que se dieron cita para disfrutar de esta tradición con sabor a México. De forma especial felicitó y presentó a los participantes este 2018 en el Concurso de Altares y Ofrendas, donde el primer lugar correspondió a Janice y Sariel Febo de Latin Community Health Advisor, el segundo lugar a Javier Nava, sobreviviente de la masacre del Pulse en Orlando en 2016, y que hizo con su Altar un homenaje a las víctimas de ese suceso. El Director de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Orlando, Luis Martínez, leyó el poema dedicado a esta festividad, de la autoría del poeta Jaime Sabines. El tercer lugar correspondió a David Peñaflor, de RCMA, quien destacó además por presentar una canción de su autoría sobre el día de muertos, y su esposa, Marilia Carrasquillo, se vistió de la tradicional Catrina. También participaron: Colectivo ÁRBOL, H&R Block, la Alianza Dominicana, Casa México Florida, entre otras organizaciones y personas. El altar de Casa México Florida fue realizado principalmente por Yolanda Hansen, directiva del periódico El Osceola Star, que hizo homenaje al poeta Jaime Sabines, entre otros personajes mexicanos. Las niñas y niños asistentes a este evento pintaron calaveritas, y disfrutaron de pinta caritas que los caracterizaron como catrinas. Los integrantes del jurado de este año fueron: Gabriela Ortigoni de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Metro Orlando y Federico Hollander de Casa de México. Además de la música y los videos representativos del Día de Muertos, jóvenes mexicanas, se caracterizaron como catrinas para admiración de todos los presentes. Cabe resaltar la participación de la comunidad hispana que participó en la elaboración de Altares y Ofrendas, ya que la comunidad puertorriqueña, dominicana, colombiana, venezolana, aportaron elementos de su cultura a esta festividad mexicana. Osceola County approves animal abuse database Osceola County, FL - The first steps to create an “Animal Abuse Database” were approved by Osceola County Commissioners on Monday. The resolution creates a partnership between Osceola County and the Osceola County Clerk of the Circuit Court to establish an online database at Osceolaclerk.com that would identify persons convicted in Osceola County of an Animal Abuse Offense on or after January 1, 2019. The database can be a useful resource to consult before selling, exchanging or transferring ownership of a dog or cat. The ordinance requires anyone convicted of animal cruelty (or who pled guilty) to be named on the public database, which will also include fines for people who transfer an animal to someone listed. Across the country, states (including Florida) have felony provisions for the most egregious crimes against animals. While animal abuse poses a threat to the safety of animals, a strong correlation has been found to exist between those who abuse animals and those who go on to commit violence against other human beings. The ordinance also amends the Animal code to include provisions that would allow Animal Services Officers to create, use and implement citations requiring a mandatory court appearance for certain aggravated violations of local ordinance.

Osceola County opens walk-up dog park in BVL Orlando, FL - Buenaventura Residents in the area of Lake Villas and Lago Vista of Royal Palm Drive have access to a new dog park – the first in the community. The gated facility at the end of Lake Villa Way was unveiled Friday. It will be open from dawn to dusk and is only accessible to those on foot, as no parking is available near the entrance. “The landscape of this property creates an excellent setting for humans and animals alike,” said Commissioner Viviana Janer of the park, which is in her district. “This is a wonderful amenity for residents who love their dogs and have wanted a place for them to exercise and socialize. This is a great opportunity to build community and meet your neighbors.” Over the last several years, the public has requested more walking trails and

dog parks, Janer said. In this case, residents liked the idea of a dog park in the neighborhood but stressed they did not want to drive up traffic. The park features a quarter-mile, shaded paved path that leads to a natural grass dog exercise area. Two areas are present -one for small dogs and another for dogs 30 pounds and up. The area includes a covered shelter for shade, two drinking fountains for both humans and dogs, and benches for owners to keep watch over their pets. A dog wash station is located just outside the exercise area. Soon, the exercise area will have dogoriented training and play equipment added to the site, officials said. As a reminder, all dogs in the park must be on a leash, except when they are in the fenced-in exercise area.

Day of the Dead 2018 Orlando, FL - On Friday, November 2, the traditional Day of the Dead festival was held at the Mexican Consulate in Orlando; Mexican tradition, with Latin flavors. The Consul of Mexico in Orlando, Juan Sabines, highlighted the participation of Colombia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) tradition remains valid not only in Mexico, but in the United States. There was an exhibition and contest of altars and offerings, as well as the bread of the dead, the champurrado, the tamales and the pumpkin sweet dessert. The Mexican Consul in Orlando, Juan Sabines, welcomed authorities, community leaders and the Mexican, Hispanic and American community, who gathered to enjoy this Mexican-flavored tradition. In a special way he congratulated and presented the participants this 2018 in the Altars and Offerings Contest, where the first place corresponded to Janice and Sariel Febo of Latin Community Health Advisor, the second place to Javier Nava, survivor of the massacre of Pulse in Orlando in 2016, and that he made with his altar a tribute to the victims of that event. The Director of Cultural Affairs of the City of Orlando, Luis Martínez, read the poem dedicated to this festivity, authored by the poet Jaime Sabines. The third place corresponded to David Peñaflor, of RCMA, who also stood out for presenting a song of his authorship on the day of the dead, and his wife, Marilia Carrasquillo, dressed in the traditional "Catrina". Also participated Colectivo Árbol, H&R Block, the Dominican Alliance, Casa México Florida, among other organizations and individuals. The altar of Casa de México Florida was made mainly by Yolanda Hansen, director of the newspaper El Osceola Star, who paid homage to the poet Jaime Sabines, among other Mexican characters. Children enjoyed painting "calaveritas". Juries this year were Gabriela Ortigoni of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and Federico Hollander of Casa de México. In addition to the music and videos representative of the Day of the Dead, young Mexicans, were characterized as "catrinas" to the admiration of all present. It is worth highlighting the participation of the Hispanic community that participated in the elaboration of Altares and Ofrendas, since the Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombian, and Venezuelan community contributed elements of their culture to this Mexican festival. Abanderamiento de Aliados de México Orlando, FL – El sábado 3 de noviembre en el Consulado de México en Orlando se llevó a cabo una ceremonia cívica emotiva con la participación de 20 organizaciones aliadas de México en el estado de la Florida. Las banderas de México fueron donadas por el secretario de la defensa nacional, General Salvador Cienfuegos, el cual encabezo el acto en el cual se rindieron honores. El Cónsul de México en Orlando, Juan Sabines, fue el encargado de entregar las banderas, el General Salvador Cienfuegos encabezó el acto cívico en que se rindió honores al estandarte patrio mexicano. La oficial Reesheema Taylor fue reconocida con una estatua de tamaño natural a su imagen, que se encuentra en una sección del museo dedicado al campo de correcciones. Robo de perro de servicio Condado Osceola, FL - El 28 de octubre de 2018, los Diputados del Sheriff del Condado Osceola respondieron a Old Town en referencia a un robo de un perro de servicio. Osceola County, Fl - In recognition of her courage in a life-or-death situation, an Osceola County Corrections Officer was recently honored by the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C. Officer Reesheema Taylor was recognized with a life-sized statue in her image, which stands in a section of the museum devoted to the field of corrections. The section gives visitors the opportunity to experience what it is like to “walk in the shoes” of a corrections officer. In 2009, Officer Taylor foiled the escape attempt of an inmate who smuggled a gun into the jail and took a Corrections Officer hostage. While performing her routine duties that day,

suspect and helping to try to recover Kira and bring her home safely. On 11/7/18, with the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Winter Garden Police Department, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office detectives were able to identify and obtain arrest warrants for Jennifer Gotschall and Monique Cosser for the theft of a veteran’s service dog named Kira. Gotschall and Cosser have been charged with Grand Theft and Kira has been recovered and is in good health. A tip was received after a concerned citizen saw the story on the news. Working together, we really make a difference in keeping Central Florida safe and make it a great place to live.

Officer Taylor encountered the inmate, who pointed the gun to her head. Officer Taylor grabbed the weapon and delivered knee spikes to the inmate’s groin, disarming the inmate in the process. Three arrested in connection to nationwide phone theft ring

Theft of Service Dog Osceola County, FL - On October 28, 2018, Osceola County Sheriff Deputies responded to Old Town in reference to a theft of a service dog. The victim, a 67-year-old Vietnam veteran advised he has PTSD and was at Old Town with his two Pomeranian service dogs. A female began an altercation with him while another female came behind him and unleashed one of the dogs. The victim never saw the second female and he had no idea what happened to the dog. The incident was captured on surveillance video and the suspect is seen below stealing the dog. The dog’s name is Kira, she is 21 years old and weighs 6 pounds. National Law Enforcement Museum immortalizes Osceola County corrections

Osceola County, FL - For the past 12 months, pickpocket groups have been traveling the United States stealing phones. These suspects attend music festivals and concerts, infiltrating the crowd to steal phones from pockets and purses. The phones are immediately placed into “Airplane” mode and/or have the SIM card removed immediately. The phones are then shipped out of the area. On October 19, 2018, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office intercepted a package from Austin, Texas. Inside the package were over 100 newer model phones, with a vast majority being iPhones. City starts Carroll Street widening project Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee Public Works & Engineering Department started the Carroll Street widening project on Monday, October 29 and is expected to be completed by January 2020. The Carroll Street widening project includes the construction of a four-lane divided roadway with sidewalks and street lighting on both sides from Thacker Avenue on the east to Donegan Avenue on the west. As part of the preparation, the contractor will be establishing the Maintenance of Traffic plan (MOT) with the intent to maintain two-way traffic at all times. The initial construction plan is to build out the two westbound (north side) lanes, swap traffic to the

¡Cruz Azul campeón de la Copa MX! La máquina venció la noche del pasado miércoles 31 de octubre 2 a 0 a los Rayados de Monterrey, para conseguir así su 4º copa y 20º trofeo oficial en su historia. De manera convincente y vistosa, desplegando un futbol llamativo y de posesión, y doblegando durante todo el partido al local, es que los cementeros levantaron su primer trofeo en más de 4 años, desde la ConcaChampions de 2014. En noche de Halloween, dos maldiciones se veían las caras. ¿Podría más la tradición de perder finales de Cruz Azul?, O Monterrey perdería otra vez una final en su nuevo estadio? Al final, Cruz Azul enfrentó el partido como el equipo grande que es, encontrando espacios en la defensa regia, con mucha peligrosidad de parte de Elías Hernández (autor del primer gol), Missael Domínguez (ex rayado) y “Piojo” Alvarado, e hilvanando más de 20 pases seguidos en ocasiones. On Halloween night, two curses would be face to face. Could Cruz Azul’s tradition of losing finals be overcome? Or would Monterrey lose another a final in its new stadium? In the end, Cruz Azul faced the game as the big team that it, finding spaces in the defense of the opposing squad, creating much danger from Elías Hernández (author of the first goal), Missael Domínguez (formerly a “rayado”) and "Piojo" Alvarado, and connecting more than 20 consecutive passes at times. Monterrey, at first with Pabón and Funes Mori, and then adding Pizarro and Hurtado, attacked lacking gunpowder, lacking creativity, trying too many crosses with no success and without even tickling Guillermo Allison, the goalkeeper. The spell was set upon again for Monterrey, which since the inauguration of its

beautiful "steel giant", the BBVA Bancomer stadium in 2015, has lost two Liga MX finals (Pachuca in 2016 and Tigres in 2017), another one in the Women’s League (Tigers in 2017) and now this Copa MX, all in home soil. Cruz Azul shook his ghosts, thus for just one night, earning a convincing victory in a final, even if it’s Copa MX, and establishing themselves as one of the firm candidates for the Apertura 2018 title. A great deal of credit goes to Ricardo Peláez, the team's sporting director, whom in a few months has made Cruz Azul a competitive, winning and colorful team, thanks to many signings that had already been successful in Mexico (Elías, Pablo Aguilar, Milton Caraglio), and young Mexican promises (Alvarado, Domínguez), whom did not take long to adapt. The only signing from outside Liga MX, was Iván Marcone, from Lanús, one of the best center-midfielders that has come to Mexican football in recent years. Although strongly criticized, the Copa MX is good enough to give opportunities to young players, to give more emotion to the mid-week, and to deliver more trophies. It is the second MX Cup that “la máquin” lifts, after winning it in penalties against Atlante on April 10th, 2013.

Entretenimiento / Entertainment El jurado de NBL está insatisfecho: endurece las reglas y despide a dos competidoras ¿Carmen Batiz o Vanessa Romo? Con esa pregunta comenzó el show dominical de “Nuestra Belleza Latina”, que luego de cuatro galas en las que los ánimos fluctuaron entre el drama y la ansiedad finalmente los cuatro jueces debieron tomar medidas. No habían pasado los primeros 30 minutos del programa cuando Giselle dio a conocer que además de la eliminada por votación, este domingo habría otra competidora fuera de la mansión. Alejandra Espinoza arrancó el show llamando a Carmen de Puerto Rico y a Vanessa de Los Ángeles, las chicas que este domingo estaban en riesgo de salir. ¿A quién le había dado su voto el público? Aunque en algún momento, Carmen le preguntó a la producción si existía la opción de abandonar

el concurso, al final prefirió no retirarse. Luego del que sería el último baile y desfile, Vanessa pudo volver a respirar tranquila: seguiría dentro de la competencia al obtener 55% de los votos. Carmen se fue, no sin antes agradecer a NBL y enviar un mensaje: "espero que haya llegado el mensaje que vine a traer". Después de los retos, Giselle llamó al centro del escenario a Andrea y Elvira. Finalmente, y por decisión unánime, ésta última fue quien debió irse. Pero esto no acababa aquí, el jurado había tomado la decisión de que a partir de ya todas las chicas entrarían a voto popular, y las tres que tuvieran la mejor cantidad de apoyo se irían la próxima gala.
