Valencia College Osceola Hosted Osceola County’s 9/11 Memorial Service Osceola County, FL - To honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Valencia College’s Osceola Campus held a county-wide memorial service on September 10. Valencia students and staffers were once again teaming up with the Rotary Club of Lake Nona to stage a dramatic display of 2,977 flags on the Kissimmee campus lawn – one flag erected for each of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that tragic day. This is the fourth year that the Kissimmee campus has staged the field of flags display, which features U.S. and international flags, representing the nationalities of the 9/11 victims. In addition to honoring the victims of 9/11, the Osceola Campus flag display also serves as the backdrop for Osceola’s county-wide memorial service, which included participants from the Osceola County’s Sheriff’s Office, Osceola County Emergency Services, Kissimmee police and fire departments, and St. Cloud police and fire departments.
The ceremony’s keynote speaker was State Rep. Mike La Rosa. Leading the Pledge of Allegiance were several retired NYPD officers who responded to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11. To install the flags, the Rotary Club of Lake Nona assembled a communitywide team of volunteers. Between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4, volunteers – including Rotarians, cadets of the Civil Air Patrol, Police Explorers, and Valencia students, faculty and staff – installed the 2,977 flagpoles on the campus grounds. The flags are scheduled to be on display until Sept. 17. The Rotary has continued to raise money toward a scholarship with the Valencia Foundation to help pay for continuing education for men and women who are currently police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Valencia College’s Osceola Campus is located at 1800 Denn John Lane, Kissimmee.

Hearing Aid Part II By Fred Cicetti About one in three Americans over 60 suffers from loss of hearing, which can range from the inability to hear certain voices to deafness. However, only about one out of five people who would benefit from a hearing aid uses one. Hearing aids have a microphone, amplifier, and speaker. Sound is received by the microphone, which converts the sound waves to electrical signals and sends them to an amplifier. The amplifier boosts the signals and then sends them to the ear through a speaker. It’s important to understand that a hearing aid will not restore your normal hearing. With practice, however, a hearing aid will increase your awareness of sounds and what made them. The two primary types of electronics used in hearing aids are analog and digital. Analog aids convert sound waves into electrical signals, which are amplified. Analog programmable hearing aids have more than one setting; the user can change the aid for listening in different environments. Digital aids convert sound waves into numerical code before amplifying them. Because the code also includes information about a sound’s pitch or loudness, the aid can be specially programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others. These aids also can be programmed to focus on sounds coming from a specific direction. Hearing aids vary in price according to style, electronic features, and local market conditions. There are many kinds of hearing aids. Behind-the-ear hearing aids are made of a plastic case with electronic components worn behind the ear and connected to a plastic earmold that fits inside the outer ear. There are also open-fit behindthe-ear hearing aids. Small, openfit aids fit behind the ear completely with only a narrow tube inserted into the ear canal, enabling the canal
to remain open. Some prefer the open-fit hearing aid because their voices do not sound “plugged up.” In-the-ear hearing aids fit completely inside the outer ear. Some of these aids may have a small magnetic coil that allows users to receive sound through the circuitry of the hearing aid instead of a microphone. This feature helps with phone conversations. Canal hearing aids fit into the ear canal and are available in two styles. The in-the-canal hearing aid is made to fit the size and shape of a person’s ear canal. A completely-in-canal hearing aid is nearly hidden. A middle ear implant is a small device attached to one of the bones of the middle ear. Rather than amplifying the sound traveling to the eardrum, an middle ear implant moves these bones. Both techniques improve sound vibrations entering the inner ear. A bone-anchored hearing aid is a small device that attaches to the bone behind the ear. The device transmits sound vibrations directly to the inner ear through the skull, bypassing the middle ear. The following are some important questions you should ask when getting a hearing aid: * What features would be most useful to me?; * Is there a trial period to test the hearing aids?; * How long is the warranty? What does it cover?; * How long should you I wear my hearing aid while adjusting to it?; and * Please check to see if my hearing aid works with my cell phone.

Bon Appetite by Mrs. Foodie ¡Sigue mis comidas!
Follow my eats! Our national pastime is NOT baseball, it is eating! We eat more than we do anything else, and although eating is a basic necessity, combining these two, we opted to venture into a day trip from Orlando, and attend a ball game, Tampa Bay Rays, this summer. Tropicana Field is not far, distance wise, but the dynamics and routes of access complicate commuting to a rather 1.5 hour road trip through Tampa into St. Petersburg. Avoid rush hour through I-275. Once there, they have it well under control. Traffic flow, parking and stadium access is very smooth; it is very nice, it is climate controlled with a domed roof, therefore, no sunscreen needed. Rays baseball have partnered with Center Plate as concessionaire for Food & Beverage offerings, and they have it well figured out for the entire family. First and foremost, kids will immediately connect with the area's professional sports mascots, even Billy the Marlin was there! Then, the myriad of options to eat are endless, from kiosks and flamboyant walking vendors to unique dining experiences like the Papa John's Bull Pen Box (Groups of 50+) to Rays Club (single tickets available) where you can sit and watch the game while you immerse in a mind blowing all-you-can-eat buffet of American, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, French and deserts buffets. There is even popcorn, peanuts and light barbeverage stations. They do a very special brunch on Sundays opening at 11 AM. One of the very best omelets I have ever had, was Chef Matteo Casini's rendering. He is their Executive Chef. So you know, the best rubbed, slow cooked, BBQ chicken, capable of earning ribbons in any festival is theirs. Even if you opt to just buy a basic
ticket, you can walk through the array of food court options and walk away extremely happy. If calorie watch is your deal, try the superb salads offered or the novella and super gourmet baked potato concept from Chef Herminio Ithier at Pili Potatoes... the best pulled pork seasoning Caribbean style! Also, they have lots of other options, even loaded nachos with Everglades style pulled pork. It looked just as it tasted, incredible! If styles of sausages or franks is your angle, waste no time and try the regular foot long hot dogs, the Italian sausages or even the bratwurst, magnifique! Do them loaded, partially or plain; it does not matter, the basic compliments are there so you can fix your own; from mayo-ketchup-mustard, to chopped onions, sauerkraut or jalapeños to make your buds sweat! Once the game ends, fans don't realize the huge juggernaut of events that do continue behind the scenes. Chef Herminio took us into a tour of Rays clubhouse, where manager José and his staff, have facilities and treats for players that will satisfy the most demanding. From the obvious flat screen TV's, to exercise equipment, training benches and relaxing seats and sofas, to a fully stocked all-youcan-see, you eat buffet for players and coaches, with warmed serving dishes, selections of beef, meat, chicken, veggies, rices of many kinds, and even all sorts of high calorie deserts and beverages. Wow! These guys not only play hard, they eat like there is no tomorrow! We need to think of these events as a family oriented outing that will have a bit of excitement and energy for everyone and all under one roof, and within an hour or so away. Come to Tropicana Field, home of The Rays & Florida's best kept culinary baseball secrets!

Kissimmee, FL – Officers from the Kissimmee Police Department and community members came together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee while supporting a local business.

Located inside Plaza Del Sol, this facility will provide the Kissimmee Police Department a mechanism to work directly with the business community as well as citizens on a variety of topics, from Holiday safety tips, bicycle safety tips and many more.
Plaza del Sol is located at 3831 W. Vine Street, Kissimmee. The Community Outreach Post will be staffed sporadically by volunteers. “Community partnerships are the backbone of our agency. The continued collaborative efforts between the police department and our residents and visitors are vital to ensuring we are providing the best quality of life to those we are fortunate to serve,” said Police Chief Lee Massie.
Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for the community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work within the
City of Kissimmee. The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those events are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some citizens may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction. “We are excited to participate in the Coffee with a Cop program and encourage our citizens to stop by, ask questions, bring concerns or simply get to know our officers. Interactions like these are the foundation of community partnerships,” said Chief Lee Massie.

Orlando City vs New England Revolution Orlando, Fl - As the season comes to a close for Orlando City, so are their playoff chances. Last Saturday against the New England Revolution, Orlando suffered a 3-0 loss. The team hoped Brek Shea would make his return from his injury but unfortunately he wasn’t ready. The Lions also played without Darwin Ceren, Cyle Larin and their Captain, Kaka, who were all away because of international call ups. Despite missing key pieces to the lineup, Orlando played well and split possession with New England during the first half but it was the Revolution who scored with just three minutes left in the first half. At the beginning of the second half, New England controlled the ball and seemed to continuously take shots. Orlando’s goalkeeper, Tally Hall, did an incredible job saving the goal. In the 71st minute of play,
Orlando got one of their best looks when Bryan Rochez took the ball from New England’s Center Back and got his shot off. It was just a little too high and cleared the cross bar. Coach Adrian Heath wanted the Lions pushed forward to find an equalizer but it back fired when two New England players got through the midfield and doubled their lead. Two minutes later, Adrian Winter responded for Orlando but his shot was pushed wide. On the final play of the game, New England scored their final goal. With only a few games left this season, Orlando needs to put the losses behind them and try and get a win or two in. This Sunday at the Citrus Bowl, Orlando will face Sporting Kansas City. A win this weekend would put Orlando in a very good position for a late playoff run.
