Florida’s Economic Growth Summit By Angel Irizarry Orlando, FL - Florida Gov. Rick Scott held an economic growth summit in Orlando on Tuesday, June 2nd, with seven probable GOP presidential candidate by each speaking on what they think needs to be done by the next president to fix the country’s economy. The candidates at the event were Sen. Marco Rubio, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Gov. Rick Perry, Gov. Scott Walker, Gov. Chris Christie, Gov. Bobby Jindal, and Gov. Jeb Bush. Gov. Scott took his few minutes on stage to express the progress Florida’s economy has accomplished, “The most important thing we’ve done, if you think about it, is you can get a job.” He addressed cutting taxes and controlling the size of government to improve the job market. Scott mentioned that Florida has added more jobs than Texas in the last 12 months. Sen. Rubio was the lead-off speaker out of the seven candidates, and took only five minutes at differentiating himself from the other candidates. He spoke through video due to being stuck in Washington. Sen. Rubio promised tax and regulatory reform, and support for the emerging oil and gas resources in North America. “Now in this new century, we are facing the most significant change since the industrial revolution. And yet instead of benefitting from the opportunities that come with this transformation, our people are held back by the challenges that it presents, and this is because while our economy is transforming our policies and our leaders are not,” Rubio explained.
Florida Governor Rick Scott
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker
Gov. Huckabee plans to remove all federal taxes in favor of the fair tax, which is a single national consumption tax on retail sales. Huckabee called to end the trade barrier for pharmaceuticals in
Canada, which he said the reduced drug cost would go long ways to reducing health care cost, and completely getting rid of the Affordable Care Act. “The fair tax would transform the economy and bring manufacturing back because with every product we build in this country there is 22 percent of imbedded tax in that product,” Huckabee explained. Gov. Perry got sidetrack in his speech about economic growth, and began speaking about border patrol, foreign policy and military issues. He went as far as criticizing President’s Barack Obama's efforts on border security and the Middle East. “The most important thing whether a governor or president needs to focus on is creating the most economic powerful environment that you can, make sure that the tax policy and regulatory policy allow for that competition because if you don’t get that right first… you will not have the resources that come into your state to pay for teachers, for law enforcement, to pay for the infrastructure, to pay for the health care needs,” Perry expressed. Gov. Walker called for free trade, weakened union power in government, and transferring of regulatory powers into the state. “If we are going to reform our nation we got to take major portions of the power in Washington, and send it back to the state, and back to the local government, and most importantly to the people of this country. I believe if we do that we can turn things around.” Walker explained. The Summit promoted the economic growth that has fueled through Florida, and asked of the presidential candidates what they would do as the President to fix the nation’s economy, which resulted in topics of taxes, healthcare, and reform.

Kissimmee Police Participate in Coffee with a Cop Kissimmee, FL – On June 3, 2015, officers from the Kissimmee Police Department and community members came together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee while supporting a local business. Kissimmee Police Department’s first Coffee with a Cop event was held at Susan’s Courtside Café located in Kissimmee. The event was open to anyone who was interested in attending. Coffee with a Cop provided a unique opportunity for the community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work within the City of Kissimmee. The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those events are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some citizens may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction. “We are excited to participate in the Coffee with a Cop program and encourage our citizens to stop by, ask questions, bring concerns or simply get to know our officers. Interactions like these are the foundation of community partnerships,” said Chief Lee Massie. Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Clemente Honored with Buenaventura Boulevard Designation Osceola County, FL – The late Roberto Clemente – a Puerto Rican hero on and off the baseball field -- was memorialized Friday with the designation of Buenaventura Boulevard in his honor. Clemente, who played 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, died in an
aviation accident on December 31, 1972, while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. “Roberto Clemente’s actions echo through the decades as a role model for adults and our youth,” said County Commissioner Viviana Janer of the Hall of Fame right-fielder. “He made
From L to R: Rep. John Cortes, Osceola County Commissioners Cheryl Grieb, Vivian Janer and Senator Darren Soto. the world a better place with a unique brilliance that transformed the game of baseball. His selfless dedication to those who labored with two strikes against them should be a call to action for all of us. I’m proud that we are able to create this tribute here in District 2 as a daily reminder of his legacy.” Clemente, who got his 3,000th major league hit in the very last plate appearance of his career during a regular season game, was an All-Star, a National League Most Valuable Player, a NL batting champion, and
a Gold Glove winner. Yet his greatest contributions may have been his offseason charity work. Roberto Clemente was posthumously presented three civilian awards from the President of the United States, including the first Presidential Citizens Medal. The memorial signs were placed at the north and south ends of Buenaventura Boulevard. The honor does not change the name of the road or affect addresses of residences or businesses along it.

Valencia Trustees OK Deal to Lease Former Colt Manufacturing Plant Orlando, FL - Valencia College trustees signed off on terms of a lease agreement that would allow the college to rent an Osceola County building that gun manufacturer Colt had planned to occupy. The college plans to use the Kissimmee facility to house an Advanced Manufacturing Education and Training Center, which will train currently unemployed and underemployed workers, veterans, women and those who want to pursue a career in advanced manufacturing. Valencia’s trustees voted unanimously to approve the lease deal. Under the agreement, Valencia will lease the facility for seven years, with an option to extend the agreement for another three years. According to the lease agreement, Valencia will pay Osceola County $7,557.92 for the first 44 months, and $8,932 a month for the remaining 44 months of the lease deal. The facility is located near Florida’s Turnpike and U.S. Highway 192, close to the site of UCF’s planned Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center. A number of Central Florida employers – including Lockheed Martin, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Hernon Manufacturing, Collins Manufacturing and Regal Marine – need skilled manufacturing workers. And as a wave of skilled workers retires, there’s a growing demand to replace them. There are currently more than 5,000 job openings for skilled workers, according to the Manufacturers Association of Florida. But because there aren’t enough skilled workers to fill the positions, the state’s 17,000 manufacturers – who make everything from electronics to medical devices – often spend months looking for qualified candidates to fill open positions. “These are jobs that require technical expertise and specific credentials in order for workers to qualify,” said Joe Battista, vice president of Valencia’s Global, Professional and Continuing Education department. “Valencia is designing programs that won’t take workers a long time to complete, giving them a quick path to a job. Plus, they can seek advanced education with credits that transfer to an Associate in Science degree.”
