City of Kissimmee - Noticias / News Bomberos de la Ciudad de Kissimmee responden a incendio y salvan múltiples unidades iniciales del Departamento viviendas Kissimmee, FL - El Departamento de Bomberos de la Ciudad de Kissimmee respondió a un incendio en el bloque 3200 de West Tower Court, el 8 de mayo, luego de recibir numerosas llamadas al 9-1-1 que reportaban llamas procedentes del techo de una estructura. La primera unidad del Departamento de Bomberos de la Ciudad de Kissimmee llegó a la escena a las 2:43 p.m. y reportó que el condominio estaba completamente involucrado. Debido al tamaño del incendio, el comandante de incidentes en la escena solicitó una segunda alarma, la cual trajo unidades adicionales de Rescate de Bomberos del Condado Osceola, Rescate de Bomberos del Condado Orange y Rescate de Bomberos de la Ciudad de St. Cloud para ayudar. "La rápida respuesta y las acciones de las
de Bomberos de Kissimmee tuvieron un tremendo impacto en el resultado general del fuego", dijo el Jefe de Bomberos de Kissimmee, Jim Walls. "Sus acciones rápidas ayudaron a detener el fuego en su camino, impidiendo que se extendiera a más unidades". City of Kissimmee Fire Department responds to townhome Fire, saves multiple dwellings Kissimmee, FL. – The City of Kissimmee Fire Department responded to a townhome fire in the 3200 block of West Tower Court, on May 8th, after receiving numerous 9-1-1 calls reporting flames coming from the roof of a structure. The first City of Kissimmee Fire Department unit arrived on-scene at 2:43 p.m. and reported the townhome was fully involved. Due to the size of the fire, the on-scene incident commander requested a second alarm, which brought additional units from Osceola County Fire Rescue, Orange County Fire Rescue, and the City of St. Cloud Fire Rescue to assist. “The quick response and actions of the initial Kissimmee Fire Department units had
a tremendous impact on the overall outcome of today’s fire” said Kissimmee Fire Chief Jim Walls. “Their quick actions helped stop the fire in its tracks, preventing it from spreading to more units that it did”. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it does not appear to be suspicious at this time and only affected two of the six townhomes within the building. The State Fire Marshal was notified but did not respond, and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist families of those units impacted. All residents of the affected building could safely exit during the fire, and one firefighter was treated and released onscene during the incident for abdominal pains.

La Ciudad celebra la culminación de un garaje de estacionamiento de 398 espacios por $9 millones Kissimmee, FL. - La Ciudad de Kissimmee realizó, el martes 9 de mayo, la ceremonia de corte de cinta de su nuevo garaje de estacionamiento “Intermodal Center” ubicado en el centro de Kissimmee. El nuevo proyecto de la Ciudad, a un costo de 9 millones de dólares marca la conclusión de un hito importante en la visión de reconstrucción a largo plazo que viene cobrando vida en el centro de Kissimmee. El nuevo estacionamiento “Intermodal Center” es una parte de la instalación intermodal de la Ciudad que incluye estaciones de transferencia Lynx, Amtrak, Greyhound y una estación/ plataforma SunRail que pronto se completará. "Al tener que financiar sólo el costo de los permisos, que totalizaron algo más del 1% del costo total del proyecto, la Ciudad de Kissimmee agradece al Departamento de Transporte de la Florida por el
financiamiento y la construcción de esta preciosa instalación de $9 millones en el centro de Kissimmee" Alcalde José Alvarez. Este nuevo estacionamiento servirá no sólo como un garaje para los usuarios del Centro de Transporte Intermodal, sino que también servirá como estacionamiento para el área general del centro de Kissimmee, del Kissimmee Lakefront Park, y para el futuro programa de autobuses de circulación de la ciudad, que moverá rápidamente a los visitantes alrededor del área del centro. Alvarez también agregó que el diseño de la planta refleja el histórico depósito de trenes y complementará el diseño de las plataformas del SunRail actualmente en construcción junto al garaje. Se espera que el Estacionamiento del Centro Intermodal esté abierto al público en la próxima semana.
City celebrates completion of a $9 Million, 398 space parking garage Kissimmee, FL. – The City of Kissimmee held a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning for its new Intermodal Center Parking Garage located in Downtown Kissimmee. The City’s new $9 Million, 398 space parking garage marks the completion of a major milestone in the overall long-term redevelopment vision that is coming to life within Downtown Kissimmee. The new Intermodal Center Parking garage is one piece of the City’s Intermodal Facility that includes an existing Lynx transfer station, Amtrak, Greyhound, and a soon to be completed SunRail station/platform. “By having to fund the cost of only permits, which totaled just over one percent of the total project cost, the City of Kissimmee is grateful for the Florida Department
of Transportation for funding and constructing this beautiful, $9 million facility in Downtown Kissimmee” said Mayor Jose Alvarez. This new parking garage will serve not only as a garage for Intermodal Transportation Center users, but also serve as a lot for the general downtown area, Kissimmee Lakefront Park, and the City’s future circulator bus program that will quickly move riders around the downtown area. Mayor Alvarez also added that the facility’s “design reflects the historic train depot and will complement the design of the SunRail platforms currently under construction next to the garage”. The Intermodal Center Parking Garage is expected to be open to the public within the next week.

Osceola School District announces 2017 summer reading opportunities for students In an effort to build a consistent, yearround culture of reading throughout the community, the Osceola School District is kicking off its 2017 summer reading opportunities with a number of fun and exciting programs for students: Summer Reading Pledge— Students can sign the 2017 Summer Literacy Adventure Pledge from the Florida Department of Education by May 25 to pledge the number of books that they will read. Students who sign the pledge will receive a free ticket voucher (with a paying adult) to attend a Florida Fire Frogs baseball game and the Summer Reading Kick-Off Event on June 5. The Osceola school with the highest percentage of pledge participation will earn a school visit from Striker, the Florida Fire Frogs mascot, on May 30. In addition, Florida’s First Lady Ann Scott will visit and recognize the top 10 schools in the state with the highest participation. Summer Reading Book Club - All students, parents, and community residents are invited to participate in the district’s Summer Reading Book Club by reading Framed by James Ponti.
Copies of the book can be found in each school’s media center, local public libraries and book stores, and checked out through the district’s Media and Instructional Technology Department, located at 817 Bill Beck Blvd. (Building 2000) in Kissimmee. 5 de Mayo Festival Miles se congregan para celebrar el 5 de mayo; el festival organizado por Telemundo Apopka, FL - Miles de mexicanos e hispanos asistieron al festival del "5 de mayo" que se celebró en Apopka, con la presencia de autoridades, artistas de música tradicional y moderna, así como actividades para niños, en lo que fue una gran fiesta mexicana que compartió toda la comunidad de Florida Central. El Cónsul de México en Orlando, agradeció a Telemundo por la organización de este festival del "5 de mayo" por segundo año consecutivo, y a la comunidad latina y americana por acompañar esta celebración de México. Agradeció a todas las autoridades que reconocen y celebran junto a la comunidad mexicana esta fecha significativa "en nuestras tradiciones, en la cultura". Los integrantes del grupo puertoriqueño, que se ha convertido en un fenómeno en música para niños gracias a las redes sociales y a la plataforma de You Tube, presentó al Sr. Sapo, a Johnny Lagartijo y a Tito El Angelito, se dieron tiempo para tomarse fotos con los pequeños que asistieron a este evento.

This celebration was a great Mexican party
shared with the community of Central Florida. The Mexican Consul in Orlando thanked Telemundo for organizing this "5 de Mayo" festival for the second consecutive year, and for the Latino and American community to accompany this celebration of Mexico. He thanked all the authorities that recognize and celebrate together with the Mexican community on this significant day "in our traditions, in the culture." Accompanied by the director of Telemundo, Alejandro Sánchez and the director of the Osceola Star, Guillermo Hansen, both awardees in recent years with the Othli- said that May 5 means freedom. Los beneficios que se pueden lograr al obtener la certificación para trabajar con compañías más grandes y con el gobierno, y como presentar una propuesta de contratista al gobierno del Condado Osceola. Su enfoque fue dirigido a cómo hacer negocio con el Condado Osceola, los requisitos y documentos requeridos para poder ser considerado como contratista y poder hacer negocios en el Condado Osceola. Para culminar la orientación el último recurso de la tarde fue el Sr. Ramón Ojeda, presidente de Florida Diversity Business Council. Su orientación fue en base a la función que tiene su empresa en la que logra conectar a los dueños de pequeños negocios con los distintos recursos y compañías para que se fusionen y puedan hacer negocios. Pueden dirigirlos a los recursos de faltarles algún documento o certificación. Esta empresa no certifica, sino las empresas a las que ellos les refieren.
Osceola County FL - On May 9 at 11 a.m. the Hispanic Business Council of the Kissimmee / Osceola Chamber of Commerce held the Minority Supplier Certification Orientation Lunch at the Osceola Council on Aging located at 700 Generation Point, Kissimmee, to learn how to become certified minority contractor. There are benefits that can be achieved by obtaining the certification to work with larger companies and the Government, and submit a proposal to Osceola County Government. The President of the Hispanic Business Council of Kissimmee, Mr. Guillermo Hansen, welcomed the public that attended the event, then Ms. Carmen Carrasquillo, Director of Osceola Council Aging addressed those present, giving a brief orientation of the work being done at the Osceola Council on Aging. The first presentation was given by Mr. José Nido, Vice President Global Supplier Diversity Strategic Sourcing of the Wyndham Worldwide Corporation, where he gave the definition of diversity suppliers and the different minorities which include: LGBT, women business owners, veterans and the disabled. At the end, he explained how to become a minority supplier at Wyndham Worldwide Corporation chain. The next presenter was Ms. Kathy Hazelwood, Vice President of the Central and Northern Region of Florida State Minority Supplier Development Council. During her presentation, she explained in detail the requirements to certify as a minority supplier and the
documentation that is required at the time of the filling the request. The third presenter was Ms. Rebecca Jones, Director of Osceola County Procurement Services. The focus of the presentation was directed on how to do business with Osceola County, requirements and documents necessary to be considered as a contractor and how to make business in Osceola County. To complete the orientation the last resource of the evening was Mr. Ramón Ojeda, President of Florida Diversity Business Council. His orientation was based on how his company works, it manages to connect to the owners of small businesses with different resources and companies to merge and do business. They can be directed to resources if lacking any document or certification. This company does not certify, but they are the liaison. KUA linemen lasso 3 trophies at national rodeo Kissimmee, FL – Kissimmee Utility Authority linemen brought home perfect scores and three national trophies from Saturday’s 17th annual Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo in San Antonio, Texas, hosted by the American Public Power Association.
Seventy-three teams and 157 apprentices from utilities across the United States and several U.S. territories gathered to demonstrate their skill and knowledge in the craft of linework. The rodeo-style competition consisted of five timed events. KUA’s journeyman team was made
up of Austin Franey, Shane Paras and Billy White, with Dave Wolfe serving as alternate. Lars Akkerman and Danny Kelly competed in the apprentice competition. There are two levels of competition within the lineworker rodeo: journeyman teams and apprentices. The journeyman teams consist of three members – two climbers and a ground worker. A qualified journeyman has more than four years of experience within the electric utility trade. An apprentice lineworker competes as an individual and has four or fewer years of experience.

Valencia graduate highlights educational freedom at 2017 commencement Orlando, FL - On Sunday, May 7, more than 1,600 Valencia students walked the stage, receiving their associate degrees as Valencia College celebrates its 48th spring commencement at the CFE Arena at University of Central Florida. This year’s commencement address was given by 20-yearold Rula Khalaf, who was named the 2016-2017 Distinguished Graduates by the Valencia Alumni Association. Khalaf, a graduate of Timber Creek High School in Orlando, came to Valencia in 2015 just two years after her family moved to the United States from the Middle East. A student at the Seneff Honors College, she graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. Serving as chief of staff for East Campus Student Government Association and the president of the Future
Medical Professionals Club, Khalaf has taken full advantage of educational opportunity which she said is not accessible to women in her homeland. Michael Miller named Osceola School District’s 2018 Teacher of the Year In recognition of his accomplishments as an outstanding educator and for his passion and devotion to teaching the whole child, Michael Miller, fifth grade teacher at Kissimmee Elementary, has been named as Osceola School District’s 2018 Teacher of the Year. Mr. Miller takes the time to form real supportive relationships with his students. He shows that he believes in them as he guides them along their paths of learning. He has earned a perfect 4.0 score on the student achievement portion of his annual evaluation for the last five years. His students, who are mostly comprised of Exceptional Education students (ESE) and English Language Learners (ELL), come into his class at a level 1 or 2 on standardized assessments, and by the end of the school year, they are scoring at a level 3 or higher. His success in student growth is due to his high expectations and data driven instruction. Overall under his leadership, the fifth grade mathematics teachers at Kissimmee Elementary have seen large growth in the number of students who are proficient and who are making learning gains in their academic achievement.
Mr. Miller’s guidance and expertise for his students also extends beyond the traditional school day. He works closely with several math teachers for after-school tutoring, in order to provide additional resources and guidance for students needing intensive remediation. He also helps plan the school’s Math, Science, and Literacy Nights. Mr. Miller is a mentor teacher and an internsupervising teacher to college students working towards their teaching certificates. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also recognized him in 2016 for his achievement gains with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students. “It is Mr. Miller’s passion to ensure that all students have the opportunity to learn and to reach their maximum potential no matter what they have faced in their young lives,” said Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace. “I am extremely proud to have him represent the many outstanding educators here in our county.” Mr. Miller will now represent Osceola County at the state level in the Florida Department of Education/ Macy’s 2018 Teacher of the Year judging.

County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested David D. Houston for Occupied Burglary. Houston, who was released from state prison on November 30, 2016, for Occupied Burglary convictions, and is being charged with 7 Occupied Burglaries within Osceola County. Houston in most cases would sneak into rental homes while the occupants of in the residences were asleep, taking cash and some jewelry items in most cases. Houston would enter the properties through unlocked doors. Most the incidents took place in the Windsor Hills and Encantada neighborhoods, which are located west of I-4 in Osceola County. Houston may be the suspect of additional burglaries within Central Florida. We encourage anyone with information concerning

The victim’s vehicle has been recovered, but the Osceola Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to take a good look at the subjects in this case. Municipio de St. Cloud presenta Visualize a St. Cloud; invita al público a la próxima etapa de descubrimiento St. Cloud, FL – El Municipio de St. Cloud le presentó a la comunidad el proyecto Envision St. Cloud (Visualize a St. Cloud) el 3 de mayo en el Marina Building Banquet Hall. Ésta es la primera etapa de la fase de descubrimiento del proyecto de Servicios de la Administración del Desarrollo (GMS, por sus siglas en inglés) el cual se centra en cómo será St. Cloud en 25 años con la participación de la comunidad. Durante el evento de lanzamiento, las personas presentes pudieron expresar sus opiniones sobre lo que más valoran de St. Cloud, dónde viven o dónde tienen un negocio. También participaron en un ejercicio de mesa para identificar las áreas de St. Cloud que les gustaría preservar y/o transformar. “Nuestro trabajo es el de ayudar a mantener el estilo de nuestra comunidad, pero mejorarlo para obtener la comunidad que todos deseamos tener en el futuro, lo cual incluye un ambiente seguro, saludable y próspero”, dijo el Supervisor de Planificación y Zonificación del Municipio de St. Cloud y gerente del Proyecto Visualize a St. Cloud, Andre Anderson. “Nuestro evento de lanzamiento fue tan solo el comienzo. City of St. Cloud presents Envision St. Cloud; invites public to next discovery step St. Cloud, FL – City of St. Cloud presented to the community the Envision St. Cloud project on May 3 at the Marina Building in the Banquet Hall. This was the first step in the Discovery Phase of the Growth Management Services (GMS) project that focuses on what St. Cloud will look like in the next 25 years with the community’s input. During the kickoff event, attendees were able to provide their thoughts on what they value most about St. Cloud and where they live and/or own a business, and they also participated in a table exercise to identify the St. Cloud areas they would like to preserve and/ or transform. “Our job is to help maintain the feel of our community, but enhance it to have the community that we all want to have in the future, which includes a safe, healthy and prosperous environment,” said City of St. Cloud Planning and Zoning Manager and Envision St. Cloud Project Manager Andre Anderson. “Our kickoff event was just the beginning. We have several more opportunities to receive input from everyone within our community and we look forward to learning more about what is of interest to those who live in, work in and visit St. Cloud.” The Envision St. Cloud project will
be completed in four phases to help the municipality in exploring the city’s potential. The next step in the Discovery Phase is a Community Walking Audit. The first walking tour is scheduled for May 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the downtown area (starting at City Hall) and the second walking tour is scheduled for May 13, 9-11 a.m., at the lakefront (starting at the Marina Building).
