Por : David Díaz Orlando, FL – El sábado 27 de octubre se realizó la clausura de la Semana Binancional de Salud 2018 en el Consulado de México en Orlando en la cual destacó la participación de los médicos de Coamed junto a 70 agencias de salud. La Semana Binacional de Salud (SBS) 2018 se llevó a cabo del 9 al 27 de octubre. Se ofrecieron servicios médicos gratuitos para toda la comunidad. Los cónsules Eliana Pedrozo y Juan Sabines agradecieron y dieron la bienvenida al público presente. Cientos de personas, principalmente de la comunidad mexicana, colombiana e hispana en general, asistieron para beneficiarse con los servicios que se ofrecieron en esta SBS2018. Florida Hospital realizó mamografías gratis en este mes de concientización sobre el cáncer de mama. Los cónsules de Colombia, Eliana Pedrozo y de México, Juan Sabines, recorrieron cada una de las mesas de atención, entre ellas: Walgreens, el Club de Leones Hispano, la organización Angels for Kids, Sanitas Medical Center y por supuesto los
geriatría, nutrición, cardiología, de Coamed entre otros. Walgreens proveyó durante esa semana vacunas gratuitas contra la gripe. Asimismo, la organización Aspire Health Partners hizo pruebas gratuitas de VIH. UCF Center For Autism and Related Disabilities realizó pláticas informativas sobre el autismo en la Biblioteca “Blanquita Trabold” del Consulado de México. Los cónsules Pedrozo y Sabines entregaron reconocimientos para las agencias participantes, por su compromiso con la comunidad mexicana, colombiana e hispana y en general para toda la comunidad de Orlando, que pudo obtener servicios gratuitos, y sin necesidad de solicitud de ningún tipo de documentos migratorios. De forma especial agradecieron a Juan Carlos Escandón, presidente de la organización Coamed, por sumarse una vez más a las mejores causas por la salud de la comunidad hispana, así mismo al periódico El Osceola Star, cuyos directores Guillermo y Yolanda Hansen, dieron amplia difusión a este evento desde su inauguración.

Closing of the Binational Health Week 2018 By: David Díaz Orlando, FL - On Saturday, October 27, the Binational Health Week 2018 was closed at the Consulate of Mexico in Orlando, where the participation of Coamed's doctors and 70 health agencies was highlighted. The Binational Health Week (SBS) 2018 took place from 9 to 27 October. Free medical services were offered for the entire community. The Consuls Eliana Pedrozo and Juan Sabines thanked
and welcomed the audience. Hundreds of people, mainly from the Mexican, Colombian and Hispanic community, attended to benefit from the services offered in this SBS2018. Florida Hospital performed free mammograms in this month of breast cancer awareness. Consul of Colombia, Eliana Pedrozo and Consul of Mexico, Juan Sabines, toured each of the service tables, among them: Walgreens, the Hispanic Lions Club, the Angels for Kids organization, Sanitas Medical Center and of course the clinics that are located on the second floor, with pediatric service, geriatrics, nutrition, cardiology, among others, Coamed. Walgreens provided free flu vaccines during that week. In addition, the Aspire Health Partners organization did free HIV tests. UCF Center for Autism and Related Disabilities held informative talks about autism in the "Blanquita Trabold" Library of the Consulate of Mexico. Consul Pedrozo and Sabines gave recognition to the participating agencies, for their commitment to the Mexican, Colombian and Hispanic community and in general to the entire community of Orlando, which was able to obtain free services, and without the need for any type of immigration documents. In a special way they thanked Juan Carlos Escandón, president of the Coamed organization, for joining once again the best causes for the health of the Hispanic community, as well as the newspaper El Osceola Star, whose directors Guillermo and Yolanda Hansen, gave wide publicity to this event since its inauguration.

Orlando Police News Ceremonia de cambio de mando de la policía de Orlando Por David Díaz Orlando, FL – El lunes, 29 de octubre en el Amway Center, se llevó a cabo la Ceremonia de Cambio de Mando del Departamento de Policía de Orlando en donde se juramentó al 39° jefe de policía el jefe Orlando Rolón. Rolón es el primer latino en ocupar este puesto. El alcalde de Orlando Buddy Dyer presidió la Ceremonia de Cambio de Mando. Antes de comenzar la Ceremonia se escucharon las gaitas y tambores del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Orlando, y se realizó la presentación de los colores y la entonación del Himno de los Estados Unidos por parte de las oficiales Gladys Justiniano y Loaida Rennish. El alcalde Buddy Dyer, tomó la palabra, para felicitar al jefe John Mina por sus años de servicio, y leyó en su honor una Proclama firmada por el mismo en la que agradecia al Jefe Mina por su liderazgo y su dedicación a la Ciudad de Orlando. A su vez el jefe John Mina dijo que “el servirle a los residentes de esta comunidad, y ser jefe de la Policía del Departamento que amo, ha sido uno de los mayores honores de mi vida”. La Guardia de Honor del Departamento de Policía de Orlando retiró la bandera de mando del jefe John Mina, y luego de la Presentación y Juramentación del nuevo jefe, Orlando Rolón, se presentó la correspondiente bandera de mando, ahora con su nombre. El nuevo jefe de la Policía, Orlando Rolón, con 25 años de servicio en la Policía de Orlando y donde tiene experiencias en prácticamente todas las áreas, resaltó que tiene como una de sus prioridades mejorar la tecnología que se aplica en el Departamento de Policía de Orlando.

Foto por: David Díaz José - Osceola Star También resaltó la importancia de fortalecer las relaciones comunitarias y respaldar a los oficiales que se vean afectados en su salud mental y el estrés postraumático, dada la naturaleza de su encargo. “Mi visión es ambiciosa y sin duda se requerirán de ajustes; con esfuerzos adicionales vamos a lograr grandes cosas”, resaltó. "Para la comunidad hispana, este logro debe ser visto como una celebración para todos los latinos". Aunque la mayor parte de su discurso fue en inglés, Orlando Rolón, expresó en perfecto español, su primera lengua: “para nuestra comunidad latina, especialmente los que actuaron con más que palabras para apoyarme en este proceso, gracias de parte de este latino que nació en Puerto Rico fue seleccionado para esta importante posición. Siempre trataré de hacer el mejor trabajo posible, para que nuestra comunidad, especialmente nuestra comunidad latina, se sienta orgullosa de tener un latino representándonos a todos". Durante el evento se nombró también a José Vélez como Jefe Adjunto, y se entregaron los ascensos oficiales al Capitán Douglas Goerke; al teniente Frank Chisari y a la Sargento Alyce Payne.

The new Chief By David Díaz Orlando, FL - On Monday, October 29, at the Amway Center, was held the change of command ceremony of the Orlando Police Department where Chief Orlando Rolón was sworn as the 39th Chief of Police. Rolón is the first Latino to hold this position. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer presided over the Change of Command Ceremony. Before the beginning of the Ceremony, the bagpipes and drums of the Orlando Fire Department were heard, and the presentation of the colors and the intonation of the United States Anthem by the officers Gladys Justiniano and Loaida Rennish was made. Mayor Buddy Dyer spoke to congratulate Chief John Mina on his years of service and read in his honor a signed Proclamation in which he thanked Chief Mina for his leadership and dedication to the City of Orlando. In turn, Chief John Mina said that "serving the residents of this community and being the Police Chief of the Department that I love, has been one of the greatest honors of my life." St Cloud - Noticias / News Nueva sala de emergencia ampliada en el St. Cloud Regional Medical Center Por Jordan Monaghan St. Cloud, FL - El viernes 26 de octubre, se llevó a cabo una ceremonia de corte de cinta en la sala de emergencias ampliada del nuevo Centro Médico Regional de St. Cloud. New expanded emergency room at St. Cloud Regional Medical Center By Jordan Monaghan St. Cloud, FL - On Friday, October 26th, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new St. Cloud Regional Medical Center’s expanded emergency room. “This expansion will enhance our number one priority- delivering quality care to our patients safely and efficiently,” said Brent Burish, CEO of St. Cloud Regional Medical Center. The new space added 14,000-square feet to the hospital. Business Night Kissimmee, FL- On Thursday, October 25th, the Latino Referral Group of the Hispanic Business Council (HBC) of the Kissimmee/Osceola Chamber of Commerce had their Business Night at Osceola Arts. KUA - Noticias / News KUA recibe el premio estatal de servicio comunitario Kissimmee, FL - La Asociación de Electricidad Municipal de Florida presentó su Premio 2018 Building Strong Communities a la Autoridad de Servicios Públicos de Kissimmee por el firme compromiso de los servicios públicos para atender a las necesidades de la comunidad durante el año pasado. KUA fue uno de los 13 servicios públicos honrados en todo el estado. La directora ejecutiva de FMEA, Amy Zubaly, entregó el premio a KUA durante las ceremonias que se llevaron a cabo el 24 de octubre en la Conferencia Comercial de Conexiones de Energía de la Asociación en Kissimmee. El premio se entrega anualmente a las empresas de servicios públicos que mejoran la calidad de vida en sus comunidades a través de actividades que abordan las necesidades de la comunidad y mejoran el entorno social, cultural, educativo y económico de la zona. KUA receives statewide community service award Kissimmee, FL - The Florida Municipal Electric Association has presented its 2018 Building Strong Communities Award to Kissimmee Utility Authority for the utility’s strong commitment to addressing community needs during the past year. KUA was one of 13 utilities honored statewide. FMEA executive director Amy Zubaly presented the award to KUA during ceremonies held Oct. 24 at the association’s Energy Connections Conference and Trade Show in Kissimmee. The award is presented annually to utilities that enhance the quality of life in their communities through activities that address community needs and improve the area’s social, cultural, educational and economic environment. “Being a part of the community is about more
than making sure the lights are on,” said Zubaly. “The recipients of the 2018 FMEA Building Strong Communities Awards excel in not only taking an interest in seeing their communities succeed, but also actively working toward making them better places to live and building strong communities.” In the past year, KUA supported nearly 100 community organizations and activities that impacted a combined 250,000 residents. Notable projects included: • daily employee delivery of meals to homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels • distribution of 70,000 free hurricane preparedness guides

20 Becas/ Scholarships From HHSFMO 19na. ceremonia anual de entrega de becas de HHSFMO Por : David Díaz Orlando, FL – El viernes 26 de octubre en el Disney´s Contemporary Resort se realizó la 19na ceremonia anual de entrega de becas del Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Found of Metro Orlando (HHSFMO por sus siglas en inglés). Ya son 19 años de historias de éxito. Este año, se entregaron 20 becas a 20 jóvenes hispanos graduados de diferentes grados y carreras que encontraron en este fondo de becas un respaldo a sus sueños, que ahora se ven mucho más claros, concretándose con cada materia, con cada semestre y grado que avanzan. Familias y amigos de los graduados, así como representantes de los auspiciadores que apoyan el HHSFMO asistieron a esta emotiva ceremonia, donde cada uno de los graduados fue reconocido por la junta directiva que conforma el HHSFMO. Desde horas de la mañana, los becados y sus patrocinadores convivieron en el salón Ballroom of the Americas, y un poco más tarde se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de reconocimientos a los estudiantes, que uno a uno subieron al estrado junto a sus patrocinadores para una foto del
recuerdo. Al finalizar el evento, los 20 jóvenes becados se tomaron una foto grupal, que se inscribe ya en la historia del Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Found, que cumple 19 años de apoyar a los estudiantes hispanos a cursar carreras, que van desde especializaciones en pastelería, ingeniería, comunicación y medios, leyes, entre otras. Por su parte, el presidente del HHSFMO, Guillermo Hansen, resaltó que el objetivo es cambiar la realidad de los jóvenes hispanos, que cuentan con la capacidad de prepararse a un nivel alto, y ser elementos que impulsen el desarrollo de la comunidad en Estados Unidos. “Nos inspira proveer educación de calidad y nos impulsa el respaldo de nuestros patrocinadores”, expresó Guillermo Hansen. 19th annual HHSFMO Scholarship Award Ceremony By : David Díaz Orlando, FL - On Friday, October 26, the 19th annual Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Found of Metro Orlando (HHSFMO) scholarship ceremony was held at Disney's Contemporary Resort. There are already 19 years of success stories. This year, 20 scholarships were given to 20 young Hispanic graduates of different degrees and careers who found in this scholarship fund an endorsement of their dreams, which are now much clearer, materializing with each subject, with each semester and grade progressing. Families and friends of the graduates, as well as representatives of the sponsors who support the HHSFMO attended this emotional ceremony, where each of the graduates was recognized by the HHSFMO board of directors. From morning hours, the scholars and their sponsors lived in the Ballroom of the Americas, and a little later the recognition ceremony was held for the students, who one by one took the stage with their sponsors for a Souvenir Photo. At the end of the event, the 20 young
students took a group photo, which is already part of the history of the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Found, which celebrates 19 years of supporting Hispanic students to pursue careers, ranging from pastry specializations, engineering, communication and media, laws, among others. For his part, the president of HHSFMO, Guillermo Hansen, stressed that the objective is to change the reality of young Hispanics, who can prepare at a high level, and be elements that promote the development of the community in the United States. "It inspires us to provide quality education and encourages the support of our sponsors," said Guillermo Hansen. Among these sponsors are: Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando Health, Hispanic Business Council, Wells Fargo, CenturyLink, Duke Energy, and Casa de México. Condado Orange, FL - El Condado Orange y el Comité de Herencia Hispana del Gran Condado Orange (HHCOGOC) organizaron el cuarto torneo anual de fútbol de la Copa del alcalde del Condado Orange el 21 de octubre de 2018 en el parque Young Pine para celebrar la culminación del Mes de la Herencia Hispana. El evento familiar contó con equipos de fútbol juvenil y adulto de todo el centro de Florida que compitieron en varios juegos de campeonato. Los ganadores incluyeron el Equipo A en la categoría de Campeones Premier Mayor Masculino, Unity FC para la Categoría Campeones Premier Mayor Masculina, Orlando Stars en la categoría Promesas de Fútbol y los Tampa Bay Rowdies en las categorías Little Promises y Little Stars. Mayor’s annual soccer tournament celebrates culture and traditions of Hispanic Heritage Month Orange County, FL - Orange County and the Hispanic Heritage Committee of Greater Orange County (HHCOGOC) hosted the fourth annual Orange County Mayor’s Cup soccer tournament on Oct. 21, 2018 at Young Pine Park to celebrate the culmination of Hispanic Heritage Month. The family-friendly event featured youth and adult soccer teams from across Central Florida who competed in various championship games. The winners included the A-Team in the Men’s Premier Mayor’s Champions category; Unity FC for the Women’s Premier Mayor’s Champions category; Orlando Stars in the Soccer Promises category; and the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Little Promises and Little Stars categories. All players were thanked for their participation in the month-long soccer tournament. Orange County Utilities Engineer Alex Moncaleano once again coordinated this year’s Orange County Mayor’s Cup soccer
tournament as part of the County’s Hispanic Heritage Committee. During the event, Mayor Jacobs spoke on the importance of the County’s neighbors-helpingneighbors philosophy and thanked the community for providing assistance to those affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Mayor Jacobs also thanked the Orange County Hispanic Heritage committee and all the volunteers and organizers who assisted in planning the event. The HHCOGOC is a volunteerbased organization founded with the purpose of providing opportunities that promote and highlight the contributions made by individuals of Hispanic descent in the community. This year, Orange County kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month at a special ceremony at the Orange County Administration Building which included cultural dance performances, Hispanic food and a display of notable Hispanic artwork.

Registration for a basic SKYWARN class in Spanish Orlando, FL - Join staff from the National Weather Service of Melbourne for a basic SKYWARN class in Spanish at the City of Orlando Emergency Operations Center on Monday, November 5, 2018 between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. One of the most important assets to the NWS warning, forecast, and verification process is the SKYWARN Spotter Network. NWS trained weather spotters provide real-time reports of tornadoes, hail, winds, flooding and hurricane damage. SKYWARN spotters include Ham Radio operators, emergency responders and communication dispatchers, citizen groups and you! The classes are free, and all you need to do is RSVP and show up! The presentations last approximately two hours. Full registration will be completed at the class. A National Weather Service meteorologist will discuss various aspects of severe weather formation, storm spotting, and severe weather safety. At least one SKYWARN spotter class is taught within each county every year - with two or more classes typically conducted within many counties.

Sheriff - Noticias / News Arresto por posesión y tráfico de Opio Kissimmee, FL - El jueves, el Departamento de Policía de Kissimmee, Unidad de Crímenes Callejeros, arrestó a Toney Morris y fue acusado de posesión y venta de sustancia derivada del opio (Fentanyl), que fabrica y vende parafernalia de drogas y posee ilegalmente Dispositivo de comunicación bidireccional. El fentanilo es un opioide sintético que creemos puede estar relacionado con varias sobredosis en un área de la comunidad de Kissimmee. De esas sobredosis, nuestros oficiales y socorristas administraron Narcan y fueron revividos y transportados a hospitales locales para recibir tratamiento. Con la
esperanza de detener las sobredosis, nuestra unidad de crímenes callejeros actuó rápidamente y pudo rastrear una fuente de fentanilo hasta Morris. Morris fue arrestado en su casa en el complejo Cascades Condominium en Columbia Avenue. Ha sido reservado en la cárcel del Condado Osceola.

Overdose Spike Leads to Arrest Kissimmee, FL - Thursday the Kissimmee Police Department, Street Crimes Unit, arrested Toney Morris and charged him with possession and selling opium derived substance (Fentanyl), manufacturing and selling drug paraphernalia as well as illegally possessing a two-way communication device. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid which we believe may be linked to several overdoses in one area of the Kissimmee community. Of those overdoses, our Officers and first responders administered Narcan and they were revived and transported to local hospitals for treatment. In hopes of stopping the overdoses, our Street Crimes unit acted quickly and was able to trace a source of fentanyl to Morris. Morris was arrested in his home at the Cascades Condominium complex off Columbia Avenue. He has been booked at the Osceola County jail.

Sandra Florez, coach de vida, escritora e impartidora del taller “Ya estás listo”, resaltó la participación del personal médico especializado de Angels for Kids, encabezados por Elizabeth Valencia. Por su parte Elizabeth Valencia de Angels for Kids, sostuvo “que la salud mental es lo número uno”, por ello como profesional de la salud mental junto con todo su equipo da respaldo a estas actividades.
