Heat wave spurs record electricity use in Kissimmee Kissimmee, FL Kissimmee Utility Authority’s 74,000 customers used more electricity on Wednesday, August 8th than at any time in the utility’s 117-year history, thanks to scorching temperatures and tripledigit heat indexes that had air conditioners working overtime. KUA recorded an instantaneous system peak of 374.5 megawatts (MW) at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, eclipsing the previous record of 374.1 MW set on July 6, 2016. KUA offers the following energy-saving tips that require little or no expense and can help to reduce summertime energy costs:

•Set the thermostat on the highest comfortable setting (KUA recommends 78-80 degrees). Raising the temperature just two degrees can reduce cooling costs by as much as five percent. •Change or clean air conditioner filters monthly. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent. •Use ceiling and portable fans to keep air moving. Fans only use about as much energy as a light bulb. •Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day. This keeps the sun’s rays from heating a house.

Orange Star News Alcaldía de Orlando lanza página web Beta que cuenta con más de 60 servicios en línea Orlando, FL – El equipo de Servicios Digitales de la Alcaldía de Orlando lanzó oficialmente la nueva página web Beta beta.orlando.gov, que transformará la experiencia cibernética de los residentes con los servicios municipales. El portal reduce la cantidad de veces que residentes visitan la alcaldía o hacen llamadas para solicitar servicios para negocios al municipio ofreciendo más de 60 servicios en línea. Orlando launches Beta website that has more than 60 online services Orlando, FL - The Digital Services team at the Mayor's Office of Orlando officially launched the new Beta beta.orlando.gov website, which will transform the residents' cyber experience with municipal services. The portal reduces the number of times that residents visit the city hall or make calls to request business services to the municipality offering more than 60 services online. Three of the services most requested by residents are now available online, such as: • Report identity theft • Register a property for temporary rent • Report safety problems on the roads, such as potholes or traffic lights out of service The Alpha website was launched in the summer of 2017 and was a starting point to offer 13 initial municipal services, test the amount of online application work in lieu of paper forms and obtain recommendations from department leaders to establish priorities. the way cities do business and interact with the residents,” said Mayor Dyer. “We reinvent our government's websites and mobiles, turning them into servicebased platforms, allowing our residents to do business with us on time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we're on our way to make it a reality." The new website has been developed since mid-2017 with the goal of changing the way residents interact with municipal services, reducing the time it takes to use web pages while prioritizing the needs of the public. "The launch of Beta coincides with the 'National Day of Civic Hacking' on August 11, 2018, which provides the opportunity to collaborate and solve problems with civic colleagues to demonstrate that government can work better with the use of technology" said Matt Broffman, Director of Innovation at the Mayor's Office in Orlando. "This is the perfect time to officially launch our Beta site, as the goal of the organization goes hand in hand with the municipality's initiative to learn from other governments and create a better product and solve problems, while we put the needs of the residents first." As part of the beta release, we are requesting the opinion of the residents; therefore, we invite users to submit their opinion at https://beta.orlando. gov/News/City-of-Orlando-Launchesalpha.Orlando.gov. After the Beta trial period and the community's opinion, the municipality is scheduled to launch the final website orlando.gov at the beginning of 2019.

Educación / Education Valencia exhibirá obras de arte del nativo puertorriqueño Pedro Brull Orlando, FL - El puertorriqueño Pedro Brull, quien se convirtió en el padre de la diáspora de artistas puertorriqueños en Florida Central, será el tema de una próxima exhibición en la Galería Anita S. Wooten del Valencia College. La exposición abre el 23 de agosto y se extenderá hasta el 5 de octubre. Valencia tendrá una recepción en la galería para abrir la exhibición el 6 de septiembre de 5 a 7 p.m. Brull dará una conferencia de artista a las 6 p.m. La entrada a la galería es gratuita y el público está invitado a conocer al artista. “Brull es un ejemplo único de un artista con una mente cosmopolita, pero con un trasfondo impregnado de su cultura isleña. Pedro Brull

Valencia to Display artwork of Puerto Rican native Pedro Brull Orlando, FL - Puerto Rican native Pedro Brull, who has become the father of the diaspora of Puerto Rican artists in Central Florida, will be the subject of an upcoming exhibit at Valencia College’s Anita S. Wooten Gallery. The exhibit opens on Aug. 23 and runs through Oct. 5. Valencia will hold a gallery reception to open the exhibit on Sept. 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. Brull will give an artist lecture at 6 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and the public is invited to come meet the artist. “Brull is a unique example of an artist with a cosmopolitan mind, but with a background steeped in his island culture. This juxtaposition of a freewheeling worldly-wise mindset along with the warm and colorful spirit of a Caribbean islander has been at the center of his work from the very beginning”, says Valencia gallery curator Camilo Velasquez.

“Brull’s work remains relevant today, says Velásquez, noting that in a series of recent paintings titled, "What Maria Left", Brull speaks truth to power about the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. In one depiction, a woman’s hand washes clothes in open air under a blue tarp surrounded by ominous, leaning power lines and debris”, Velásquez says. Through this image, Brull has created an iconic female symbol of struggle and resilience. Born in Puerto Rico in 1938, Brull graduated from the Puerto Rico School of Fine Arts with a bachelor’s degree in painting and mural painting. A former art director for WKAQ-TV in San Juan, his work has been displayed in galleries, museums and government buildings in the United States and Puerto Rico. He currently resides in Kissimmee, and in 2017, was commissioned to create a mural for the opening of Valencia College’s Poinciana Campus.

Early Voting As a convenience to the voter, the Supervisor of Elections provide early voting at designated early voting sites found around the county. These sites will be open from August 17 to 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., for primary elections 2018. The voter will use the same type of voting equipment that is used at the polls on Election Day.

Early voting will be offered in the main office of the Supervisor of Elections, as well as five other locations around the county (see locations at table above). To vote early, eligible voters must present a current and valid signature and photo identification at any designated early voting site. Voters may visit any early voting site to cast a ballot.

Mrs. Foodie Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa ¡Con este tiempo de lluvia siempre estamos buscando un lugar donde podemos disfrutar de buena gastronomía en un ambiente cerrado que nos haga sentir un rayito de sol en el horizonte! Pig Floyd en Mills 50 te da esa sensación. Estaba buscando un sitio que fuese de BBQ para llevar a mi esposo por su cumpleaños pues son sus favoritos. Después de buscar y haber ya probado casi todos, encontré a Pig Floyds, el nombre es sumamente creativo, así que la comida debía de serlo también. Me encantó su terraza al aire libre, pero también su restaurante cerrado. Nos acercamos a la caja sin idea de que íbamos a pedir, como siempre cuando eso pasa vas viendo los platos de las personas alrededor con la esperanza de que veas algo que te llame la atención y sirva de guía. Decidimos pedir dos platos con cuatro cortes de carne diferentes y cuatro acompañantes. Costillas, ‘carne de cerdo desmenuzado, ‘brisket’ y panceta de cerdo, de acompañante ensalada de manzana, maíz mexicano, habichuelas tiernas (judías verdes) y papas fritas. No me gusta que mi carne tenga tanta salsa que no puedas saborearla pero esta carne estaba perfecta, jugosa y la salsa era solo un complemento, que es como debería ser. La carne tenía su sabor propio, mi favorito fue el ‘brisket’, pero todas estaban exquisitas. De los acompañantes

me enloqueció el maíz mexicano (mexican street corn), pero todos los demás estaban a otro nivel. Al terminar nuestra cena, sumamente complacidos, decidimos pedir postres, pudín de banana y mousse de chocolate, ¡una delicia! lo único que les puedo decir es que no quedo nada. ¡Los dos postres estaban divinos! La satisfacción de ir a comer y estar en un local donde todo es perfecto es casi imposible, si no estás pagando grandes cantidades de dinero. Es raro en estos días encontrarse con una joya como esta dónde la comida, el servicio y el ambiente son agradables y todos se esfuerzan para hacer de tu comida una experiencia perfecta. Pig Floyd in Mills gives you that feeling of that perfect day at the first bite. I was looking for a place that serves BBQ, to take my husband for his birthday because it is his favorite food. After searching and having tried almost all, I found Pig Floyds, the name is

extremely creative, and so the food must be too. I loved their outdoor terrace, but also there inside restaurant. We approached the order station with no idea of what we were going to ask. As always when that happens, you take a look at the plates of the people around you with the hope that you see something that catches your attention and serves as a guide. We decided to order two dishes with four different cuts of meat and four sides. Ribs, pull pork, brisket and pork belly, sides apple fennel slaw, Mexican street corn, dragon green beans and french fries. I don’t like when the meat has so much sauce that you cannot taste it, but it was a perfect, juicy meat and the sauce was just a complement, which is as it should be. The meat had its own flavor, my

favorite was the brisket, but they were all delicious. From the sides I was crazy about the "Mexican Street Corn", but everything else was at another level. At the end of our dinner, extremely pleased, we decided to order desserts, banana pudding and chocolate mousse, a delight! The only thing I can tell you is that there was nothing left. The two desserts were divine! The satisfaction of going to eat and go to a restaurant where everything is perfect is almost impossible, if you are not paying large amounts of money. It is rare these days to find a gem like this where food, service and atmosphere are pleasant and everyone strives to make your meal a perfect experience. Armed robbery arrest Osceola County, FL - Detectives with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office were investigating an armed robbery which occurred on August 4th, 2018 at the 7-Eleven located at 8540 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, Kissimmee, FL. The suspect entered the business armed with a silver and black handgun, approached the cash register and demanded an undisclosed amount of cash. An additional armed robbery in Lake County was found to be related and Osceola County Sheriff’s Office detectives and Lake County Sheriff’s Office detectives worked in conjunction. On August 10, 2018, during a traffic stop in Lake County, deputies identified, Leandro Javier Obenauer DOB 01/18/00, as the suspect for the robberies. Leandro cooperated with detectives and confessed to his involvements to the crime in both Lake and Osceola County. Obernauer was arrested and charged with armed robbery with a firearm; he

is currently incarcerated at the Lake County Department of Corrections.
