Primer hispano jefe de Policia de Orlando First Hispanic Chief of Police of Orlando Orlando, FL - El 11 de octubre el alcalde de Orlando Buddy Dyer anunció el nombramiento de Orlando Rolón, veterano de 25 años de carrera en el Departamento de Policía de Orlando que se convirtió en el jefe de la policía de la ciudad de Orlando. Rolón fungirá como el 39º jefe de la policía de la ciudad y sucederá al jefe John Mina, quien se retira después de casi 28 años de servicio a los ciudadanos de Orlando. Rolón, residente de Orlando por los pasados 40 años y natural de Puerto Rico, supervisará las operaciones diarias del departamento y fungirá como jefe consejero del alcalde en asuntos de seguridad pública. Orlando, FL - On October 11, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the appointment of Orlando Rolón, a 25-year veteran of the Orlando Police Department who became Orlando's police chief. Rolón will serve as the city's 39th chief of police and will succeed Chief John Mina, who retires after nearly 28 years of service to the citizens of Orlando. Rolón, an Orlando resident for the past 40 years and a native of Puerto Rico, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the department and serve as the mayor's chief counsel on public safety issues. During his 25year career at the Orlando Police Department, Rolón has worked or supervised the four offices and nine of the department's 11 divisions. He has served as commander of the Professional Standards Division, the West Patrol Division, the Traffic Control Section and the Downtown Section. In addition to his usual job assignments, Rolón has also served for almost 20 years as part of the Crisis Negotiation Team and was a team commander.

Osceola County Starts Hoagland Expansion Osceola County, Florida – A project to improve a segment of Hoagland Boulevard from John Young Parkway to north of the Shingle Creek Bridge will begin October 15, County officials announced. The $10.7 million project, known as Hoagland Boulevard Phase 3, consists of building a four-lane divided roadway, with bike lanes 6 to 7 feet in width on each side, a 5-foot sidewalk on one side; a 6-foot to 8-foot wide sidewalk on the other side of the roadway, and adding improvements to the Shingle Creek Bridge. Hoagland Boulevard Phase 3 is about one mile in length. The work will require shifts in traffic patterns and lane closures. The contractor and the County will coordinate notices to the public via Osceola’s social media (www.facebook. com/osceolacountyfl and http://twitter. com/osceolacountyfl) and a new website www.osceola.org/go/hoagland throughout the project, which is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2020. Later this year, the County will advertise for the construction of Hoagland Boulevard Phase 2. This project will realign Hoagland Boulevard from north of the Shingle Creek Bridge to the existing four-lane section at 5th Street. This next phase of work will include a four-lane divided roadway, 6-foot wide bike lanes, a 6-foot wide sidewalk along the east side of the roadway and an 8-foot to 10-foot wide path along the west side of Hoagland Boulevard. Phase 2, which is expected to cost approximately $27.5 million, also includes a new overpass which will span the SunRail railroad tracks. Work on that section will have fewer impacts on traffic patterns, as essentially a new 2.15-mile long roadway will be built to the west and south of Kissimmee Gateway Airport to connect the north and south segments of the road. Construction is expected to start on Phase 2 in the first quarter of 2019.

Con mucha fanfarria, los primeros en responder del Departamento de Bomberos del Condado Orange y el Departamento de Bomberos de Orlando dieron a conocer una ambulancia de rescate y un camión de bomberos personalizados, envueltos en rosa. El Departamento de Policía de Orlando también dio a conocer un SUV envuelto. Orange County supports community of breast cancer survivors and patients Orange County, FL - Central Florida leaders recently joined the 2018 Downtown Hope Hike event hosted by the Orlando Health UF Cancer Center. Each year, hundreds of pink-clad patients, survivors and family members gather as a reminder of the importance of early breast cancer detection and treatment to support those who have been diagnosed or are currently undergoing treatment. This year’s event, held on Friday, Oct. 5, marks Orlando Health’s official kick-off to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With much fanfare, first responders from Orange County Fire Rescue Department and Orlando Fire Department unveiled a custom, pink-wrapped rescue ambulance and fire engine. Orlando Police Department also unveiled a wrapped SUV. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs joined other Central Florida leaders and Orlando Health physicians at the event to speak about the importance of having a strong support system for patients. “Most of us are all too familiar with the devastating effects of cancer,” Mayor Jacobs said. “The battle against breast cancer cannot be waged alone.
We are fortunate that our community is able to partner with experts, like those at Orlando Health UF Cancer Center, to help patients who are in the fight, as well as help keep our community as healthy as possible”. Mayor Jacobs also presented a proclamation recognizing Oct. 5, 2018, as Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Orange County. “On behalf of the 1300 men and women of Orange County Fire Rescue Department, thank you. We are so proud to be a part of what has become this traditional display of pink among local first responders,” Orange County Fire Rescue Department Chief Otto Drozd III said. “These units are more than a vehicle or tool. They represent help, hope and comfort that those who call upon them are in good hands.” It is estimated that one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Through Orange County Government’s Wellness for Life Plan, employees have access to many breast cancer, and other healthrelated resources, including information sessions, wellness expos and mobile worksite mammogram screenings.

Florida Technical College Student Overcomes Adversity to Fulfill Lifelong Dream meant that attending a traditional college was impossible for Belén. Nonetheless, she was not ready to give up. As her son slept in his hospital bed, she opened an old laptop and researched online college programs. When she read about Florida Technical College’s online Business Associate Degree, she knew this was the school for her.
Belén Infante, una joven de 25 años, se mudó de Pensilvania a Florida Central hace tres años para criar a sus dos hijos más cerca de su familia extendida y continuar su educación. Después de su graduación de la escuela secundaria, ella quería obtener un título universitario. No obstante, acontecimientos de la vida se interpusieron en su camino una y otra vez. Un día ella se dijo a sí misma que esta vez sería diferente, pero la tierra tembló bajo sus pies y casi la derriba a ella y a sus sueños. El hijo menor de Belén, Alexander, que tenía dos años en ese momento, fue diagnosticado con leucemia. El Director Ejecutivo de FTC Kissimmee, Gabriel Garcés, dijo que la tenacidad de Belén frente a la adversidad fue una fuente de inspiración para todos en Florida Technical College.
By: Jeannette Rivera-Lyles Belén Infante, aged 25, moved from Pennsylvania to Central Florida three years ago to raise her two sons closer to extended family and further her education. Following her high school graduation, she wanted to pursue a college degree. Nonetheless, life got in the way time and again. One day, she told herself that this time it would be different, but the earth shook under her feet, almost tearing her down, along with her dreams. Belén’s youngest son, Alexander, who was two at the time, was diagnosed with leukemia. Managing this serious illness required frequent and prolonged hospital stays, which
“Obtaining a degree in 18 months, without having to leave my son’s side, was an incredible opportunity,” Belén stated. “I was determined to follow my dreams and stay positive. I knew that it would make me a better mom.” Completing the online lessons was not easy, but Belén persevered. That meant doing most of the work in a freezing cold hospital room with an unstable Internet connection. She had to wait for her son to take a nap or study late at night. Sometimes, she could not submit her work on time because her computer was not working properly. Through it all, FTC instructors and staff provided unconditional support. FTC Kissimmee Executive Director, Gabriel Garces, explained that Belén’s tenacity on the face of adversity was inspirational for everyone at Florida Technical College.

Secretary Detzner designates St. Cloud Main Street as Florida Main Street Program of the Month Tallahassee, FL - Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced that St. Cloud Main Street has been designated the October 2018 Florida Main Street Program of the Month. Communities are selected based on their development achievements and participation in the Florida Main Street program. “St. Cloud Main Street has worked hard to preserve the history of its downtown and generate impressive economic returns,” said Secretary Detzner. “Their hard work is shown through their many successful projects including the St. Cloud Historical Mural Trail.” Much of St. Cloud’s prosperity can be attributed to Civil War Union veteran and real estate developer Hamilton Disston. In the late 1800s he purchased four million acres of Florida land for one million dollars. His first major land development project was the St. Cloud sugarcane plantation which, at the time, is said to have been the largest sugar mill in the nation. In addition, he built the Sugar Belt Railway Line to allow for the transport of his sugar and citrus. The Sugar Belt Railway line is featured in the Florida Historical Marker program. In 1915, St. Cloud became an incorporated city.
In 1999, the city focused its efforts on downtown revitalization and became a designated Main Street. St. Cloud Main Street has a rich cultural heritage reflected on their historical mural trail. The mural trail consists of a series of paintings that illustrate significant parts of St. Cloud’s history, including the development of the Sugar Belt Railway. In addition to preserving the town’s history, St. Cloud Main Street is dedicated to economic development. “It is so fitting that we were chosen as program of the month for October, as this month marks the completion of phase one of our city’s downtown revitalization project,” says St. Cloud Main Street Executive Director Paula Start. “This project will help us focus even more attention on the preservation of historic buildings in our district.” The first phase focuses on revamping the Main Street streetscape with new street lights, utilities, drainage systems and poles. Grant offers hurricane-displaced professionals free English courses, of accelerated skills training programs orientation services Orlando, FL - Through a federal grant awarded to Career Source Central Florida (CSCF), Valencia College will provide English language courses and community orientation workshops to citizens displaced by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Career Source received the $6 million National Dislocated Worker Grant in April 2018 to provide underemployed citizens who are new to the region with services to help them succeed in the local workforce. In partnership with area institutions, such as Valencia College, the grant will provide recipients with individual career consultation, job placement and increased access to English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services. Since signing an agreement with Career Source Central Florida on July 9, 2018, Valencia College’s Continuing Education division has provided orientation workshops to 32 newly-arrived professionals at Career Source’s Osceola County location. At the day-long workshops, students receive information on local resources including: transportation options; financial advice; K-12 education opportunities; support from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and a number
offered at Valencia College. Additionally, 30 students have received scholarships to cover tuition and book fees for the college’s Intensive English Program (IEP). Program directors hope to improve language skills for professionals who already have prior certification in certain fields - particularly nursing and education while, at the same time, addressing regional shortages in the workforce. UCF Knights Mantienen el Invicto Orlando, FL - 17 de diciembre de 2016. Esa es la fecha de la última derrota de UCF Football, ante Arkansas State en el Autionation Cure Bowl. 18 partidos consecutivos con victoria después, y los Knights son el equipo con la racha vigente más larga sin perder en toda la nación americana. A pesar de perder a su coach, Scott Frost (a Nebraska), y a su estrella defensiva, Shaqueem Griffin (a la NFL con Seattle), UCF no ha perdido ritmo de cómo terminó la temporada pasada, cuando fue el único invicto del país, ganó su división y el Peach Bowl a Auburn. Más de 2 mil personas acudieron al evento que agotó sus espacios para esta presentación, patrocinada principalmente por el Osceola Star Newspaper. Desde las 4 de la tarde el público asistente ya hacía fila para ingresar al teatro; pasadas las 7 de la noche inició el show del reconocido comediante venezolano, que fue aplaudido incansablemente por la comunidad hispana. George Harris, con su humor espontáneo y anécdotas, hizo de esta noche un gran éxito; durante 3 horas hizo reír, aplaudir y reflexionar a su público. Hacia el final de su presentación, George Harris pidió a la comunidad venezolana tener ánimo y fe, de que la situación para Venezuela será diferente, ante los acontecimientos acutales en aquel país. From 4 pm in the afternoon the audience was already lined up to enter the theater; after 7 o'clock in the evening, the show of the well-known Venezuelan comedian began, which was relentlessly applauded by the Hispanic community. George Harris, with his spontaneous humor and anecdotes, made this night a great success; for 3 hours he made people laugh, applaud and reflect. Towards the end of his presentation, George Harris asked the Venezuelan community to have courage and faith, that the situation in Venezuela will be different, given the current situation in that country. Con Maite Perroni de rodillas en el escenario mientras comenzaba a entonar “Así Soy” junto a Karol G y Chiquis Rivera, arrancó la competencia por el título a “Nuestra Belleza Latina”. A ellas se unieron, marchando, las 30 semifinalistas y juntas armonizaron un increíble coro de empoderamiento femenino. Esa canción fue el último acto en el que participaron juntas, pues tras su presentación se conoció quiénes seguirán participando en la competencia.
Las diez llaves de la codiciada residencia se le dieron a cuatro mexicanas: Nancy Alejandre, Andrea Bazarte, Elvira Reyes y Vanessa Romo; a dos puertorriqueñas: Carmen BatizPuerto y Nobiraida Infante-Puerto; a una venezolana: Migbelis Castellanos, a la mexico-panameña Brenda Smith, a la hondureña: Yaritza Owen; y a la dominicana Ceylin Rosario.
