San Juan, PR - El gobernador de Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló Nevares, anunció que la Casa Blanca otorgó fondos adicionales para el recogido de material vegetal y para trabajos de respuesta a la emergencia luego del paso del huracán María. El gobernador anunció, además, que hubo una extensión de la Asistencia Federal Directa (DFA, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA, por sus siglas en inglés). La aprobación de la extensión del 100 por ciento del costo de las Categorías A y B, así como de la DFA, permitirá que continúe el trabajo crítico en Puerto Rico, sin la preocupación por la capacidad municipal y del Gobierno estatal para pagar el costo compartido. Estos fondos también ayudarán a

USDA helps with the recovery of Puerto Rico through temporary expansion of nutritional assistance Anuncio patrocinado por
San Juan, PR - Residents of Puerto Rico who continue to recover after the impact of hurricanes may be eligible for increased nutritional assistance, thanks to a grant from the US Department of Agriculture, (USDA). This temporary assistance will be distributed through the Nutritional Assistance Program (PAN for its acronyms in Spanish) of Puerto Rico, from March 3 for current eligible participants and starting March 19 for new applicants for the program. The PAN is administered by the USDA and operated by the Department of the Family of Puerto Rico. The grant was made possible through the 2017 Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Requirements Act, and provides an additional $1.27 billion. These funds will allow Puerto Rico to temporarily expand assistance to more households, and to increase the amount of benefits for current and new participants. The new maximum amount for a family unit of four people will be $649. NAP in Puerto Rico is a different program than the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that operates in all 50
states, Washington, D.C., Guam, and the Virgin Islands. NAP is a block grant that has a fixed amount each year and the program has to operate within that amount. These supplemental funds are intended to increase the assistance available through NAP. Through this grant, Puerto Rico has the flexibility to create a plan to provide temporary benefits to the victims of hurricanes in the most appropriate manner for the population, taking into account the needs of the Island. In developing this plan, Puerto Rico considered the structure of existing programs and available resources to ensure that benefits are delivered to those with needs, while also preserving good customer service and program integrity. Osceola County News El Sistema de Bibliotecas del Condado Osceola incrementara el número de cursos de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) Osceola County, FL - El sistema de bibliotecas del Condado Osceola, ha sido una de las 20 bibliotecas públicas seleccionada de todo el país para recibir una subvención de $10,000 dólares por parte de la Iniciativa de American Dream Literacy de la Asociación de Bibliotecas de los Estados Unidos (ALA por sus siglas en inglés) y la Fundación para la Alfabetización Dollar General (Dollar General Literacy Foundation). Con los fondos recibidos, se ofrecerán nuevas oportunidades para que los residentes tengan acceso a recibir clases de inglés como segunda lengua (ESL por sus siglas en ingles), en una forma más efectiva, a horas convenientes e impartidas por instructores certificados. Se incrementará el acceso a servicios y recursos disponibles y se realizará una eficaz promoción de los nuevos servicios a través de medios de comunicación dirigidos a la comunidad hispana. No necesitara tener tarjeta de la biblioteca para asistir a las clases de ESL. Los fondos de la beca “American Dream” le permitirán al sistema de bibliotecas del Condado Osceola, colaborar con organizaciones locales para eliminar barreras del lenguaje que aíslan y restringen a los residentes de habla hispana de poder participar en actividades de aprendizaje, trabajo y entretenimiento. Las clases se impartirán en tres convenientes localidades del Sistema de Bibliotecas: Hart Memorial, Poinciana y Buenaventura Lakes. Osceola Library System to offer increased English as a Second Language (ESL) programs Osceola County, FL - The Osceola Library System has been selected as one of 20 public libraries nationwide to receive a $10,000 American Dream Literacy Initiative grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and Dollar General Literacy Foundation. With the funding, the Osceola Library System will deliver highly effective English as a Second Language (ESL) opportunities to residents offered at convenient times by certified instructors, improve access to important ESL services and resources for Spanish-speaking residents through enhanced public service and partnerships, and promote these services and resources via community and media outlets aimed at the Spanish-speaking population. It won’t be necessary to have a Library card to attend the ESL classes. With American Dream grant funding, the Osceola Library System will collaborate with community organizations to remove language barriers isolating or restricting residents from full participation in work, leisure, and learning activities in Osceola County. Newcomers, such as those displaced by Hurricane Maria, and long-time residents who are nonEnglish speaking will be able to choose from a broader array of
ESL classes and opportunities to practice English during regular conversation classes and social events that are facilitated by teachers, tutors, and volunteers. School District of Osceola County’s Adult Learning Center of Osceola will provide certified teachers for conversation classes that meet strict district criteria. The Adult Literacy League will offer training classes for new volunteers desiring to teach beginner, intermediate and citizenship classes. The learning and speaking opportunities will be offered during evenings and weekends at three convenient Library locations – Hart Memorial, Poinciana and Buenaventura Lakes. Since the program’s inception, more than 200 libraries in Dollar General communities have initiated or expanded literacy services for adult English language learners. The grants allow libraries to augment their print and digital English as a second language (ESL) collections; increase computer access and training; provide job training; hold English language learning (ELL), general educational development (GED) and citizenship classes; and raise the visibility of services for immigrant populations. The Osceola Library System comprises six full-service libraries and a robust outreach program serving more than 40 organizations each month.

Dominican Republic - Independecia / Independence Dominicanos conmemoran el 174o Aniversario de su Independencia Kissimmee, FL - El pasado martes, 27 de febrero de 2018, en el salón principal de la Corte Histórica de Kissimmee tuvo lugar la conmemoración del 174º Aniversario de la Independencia de la República Dominicana. La invitación fue conjunta de la organización Latinos Central Florida, Inc., y la Casa Dominicana de la Cultura. La ceremonia, que se celebra por treceava vez en nuestro Condado, fue significativa, donde los dominicanos y la comunidad en general se unieron para honrar a los héroes de esa nación tanto del pasado como del presente. El evento fue dedicado a la participación de las mujeres dominicanas en el proceso de la guerra. El expositor fue el Dr. Luis Arzeno, el cual investigó sobre el tema de la importancia de la participación de las mujeres durante la guerra. La oficial Cynthia Pabón de la Policía de Kissimmee recibió un reconocimiento junto al Licenciado Juan José Rodríguez el cual recibió un alto reconocimiento por su colaboración y participación en general a la comunidad. Dominicans commemorate the 174th Anniversary of their Independence Kissimmee, FL - Last Tuesday, February 27, 2018, the commemoration of the 174th Anniversary of the Independence of the Dominican Republic took place in the main hall of the Historic Court of Kissimmee. The invitation was from the organization Latinos Central Florida, Inc.,and the Dominican House of Culture. The ceremony, held for thirteenth time in our County, was significant, where Dominicans and the community in general came together to honor the heroes of that nation both past and present. The event was dedicated to the participation of Dominican women in the war process. The speaker was Dr. Luis Arzeno, who researched the issue of the importance of women's participation during the war. The officer Cynthia Pavón of the Kissimmee Police received a recognition along with Mr. Juan José Rodríguez, who received a high recognition for his collaboration and participation in general to the community. Mr. Francisco Henríquez received recognition for his great contributions to literature and preservation of the language. Attendees could enjoy the presentation of the musical group "Uno mas que otro”, the singer William Kalcomania and singer Jairo Puello which played the National Anthem of the United States and the Dominican Republic. Orange Star News El Programa de Servicios para Animales del Condado Orange ayuda a los perros en la calle a encontrar hogares Condado Orange, FL - En un día determinado, los Servicios para Animales del Condado Orange (OCAS por sus siglas en Ingles) aceptan docenas de perros y gatos que necesitan un hogar. Los animales que llegan al refugio pueden haber sido abandonados, extraviados, maltratados o entregados por alguien que ya no puede cuidarlos. Encontrar casas para tantos animales sin hogar no es una tarea fácil. Se necesitan amplios esfuerzos de adopción por parte del refugio, los socios de rescate, los padres de crianza y el ejército de voluntarios solidarios. Con tantos animales merecedores que necesitan un hogar, los trabajadores del OCAS se enfocan en derribar las barreras que impiden la adopción de un animal amoroso. En los últimos años, los empleados de OCAS descubrieron que los gusanos del corazón eran un elemento de disuasión para los que adoptaban la perspectiva, una barrera frustrante cuando el 10 o 15 por ciento de los animales en un refugio podían ser positivos. Heartworm es un parásito potencialmente mortal que ataca las arterias de un perro y, si no se trata,
puede provocar una enfermedad pulmonar, insuficiencia cardíaca y daño a órganos. Se propaga por los mosquitos que portan larvas del parásito del corazón. La buena noticia es que es una enfermedad tratable y también altamente prevenible con medicamentos mensuales. El programa de OCAS trabaja con la clínica veterinaria de Pet Alliance de Greater Orlando, que ofrece un tratamiento de 90 días al costo, unos $350, que es varios cientos de dólares menos que la tarifa actual para veterinarios privados. El tratamiento no comienza hasta que el animal tenga un posible adoptador, de modo que la nueva familia pueda garantizar el cuidado y la comodidad del animal durante el proceso. OCAS proporciona radiografías, análisis de sangre y antibióticos al adoptante, y la clínica de la Alianza proporciona el tratamiento gratuito a las personas que lo adoptan desde su propio refugio. Orange County Animal Services Program Helps Homeless Dogs Find Homes Orange County, FL - On any given day, Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) accepts dozens of dogs and cats in need of a home. Animals that arrive at the shelter may have been abandoned, stray, abused or surrendered by someone no longer able to care for them. Finding homes for so many homeless animals is no easy task. It takes extensive adoption efforts by the shelter, rescue partners, foster parents and army of caring volunteers. With so many deserving animals needing homes, adoption workers focus on breaking down the barriers that deter the adoption of a loving animal. In recent years, OCAS employees found that Heartworms were a deterrent for perspective adopters, a frustrating barrier when 10 to 15 percent of animals in a shelter could be positive. Heartworm is a potentially fatal parasite that attacks a dog’s arteries and, if left untreated, can result in lung disease, heart failure and organ damage. It is spread by mosquitoes carrying
heartworm larvae. The good news is that it is a treatable condition and also highly preventable with monthly medication. OCAS’ program works with the veterinary clinic at the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, which provides the 90-day course of treatment at cost — about $350 — which is several hundred dollars less than the going rate for private veterinarians. The treatment doesn’t begin until the animal has a prospective adopter, so that the new family can ensure the animal’s care and comfort through the process. OCAS provides x-rays, bloodwork and antibiotics to the adopter, and the Alliance’s clinic provides the treatment free of charge to people who adopt from its own shelter. Los bomberos y el personal del Condado Orange van de puerta a puerta para prevenir posibles sobredosis de heroína Condado Orange, FL - Desde el comienzo de 2018, la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Orange ha respondido a más de 156 casos de sobredosis, lo que ha provocado al menos nueve muertes. Orange County fire fighters and personnel go door-to-door to prevent heroin-related overdoses Orange County, FL - Since the beginning of 2018, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office alone has responded to more than 156 overdoses, resulting in at least nine deaths. The statistics confirm a startling trend, one which parallels reports from across the nation from law enforcement and medical examiners. In an effort to curb what is clearly a public health crisis in some communities, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs launched emergency preventive measures within one Orange County community where overdoses have been on the rise. The prevention and education outreach effort are aimed at putting lifesaving information in the hands of those who are battling addiction. The team was brought together for a door-to-door campaign in the Holden Heights community, which aimed to provide information on how to address an opiate overdose and access treatment resources to over 7,000 residences in the area. Supreme Court rejects appeal over DACA The Supreme Court is rejecting the Trump administration's highly unusual bid to get the justices to intervene in the controversy over protections for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants. The justices on Monday refused to take up the administration's appeal of a lower court order that requires the administration to continue accepting renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. The DOJ appealed a lower court's decision in The Regents of the University of California and Janet Napolitano v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Elaine Duke, to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and asked the U.S. Supreme Court take up the case directly late last month. The appeal came after a U.S. district court temporarily blocked the Trump administration from ending DACA, the program former President Barack Obama established to protect immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children. What made the appeal unusual is that the administration sought to bypass the federal appeals court in San Francisco to appeal directly to the Supreme Court. Since then, a judge in New York also has ruled in favor of immigrants challenging the end of DACA. In a brief unsigned comment, the justices said they assume "the court of appeals will proceed expeditiously to decide this case." The court order says applications must now be accepted indefinitely. President Trump, addressing the nation's governors, complained that "nothing's as bad as the Ninth Circuit." He said of that particular appeals court that "every single case is against us" in the Ninth Circuit. "We'll see what happens from them," Mr. Trump said. On Monday’s ruling the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have posted the following message on their web site: Important information about DACA requests: Due to federal court orders, USCIS has resumed accepting requests to renew a grant of deferred action under DACA. USCIS is not accepting requests from individuals who have never before been granted deferred action under DACA. Of course, we won’t all agree on every issue, but I do believe this is a moment when our state can come together around a common sense set of actions. Juveniles detained due to threats to local schools Osceola County, FL - On February 20, 2018, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office responded to 1809 Celebration Blvd, (Celebration High School), about a report of threats, stated on social media. The posting, which read, “I’m shooting up celebration high school tomorrow Shhhhhhh,” was placed on Snapchat. During the investigation, information was obtained which determined Steven BatistaLozada, a student at Celebration High School, was the individual who made the threats. BatistaLozada (D.O.B. 11/10/2000), was interviewed and subsequently admitted to posting the threats due to, “The recent hysteria and other rumors of school shootings.” Steven Batista-Lozada was subsequently detained on a custody order for

Volvió la Champions League Orlando, FL – El pasado 13 y 14 de febrero volvió el torneo de clubes más emocionante del mundo: la UEFA Champions League, en su etapa de Octavos de Final. Partidos que esperábamos desde hace más de dos meses, y que no decepcionaron. Veamos el resumen de cada uno: Juventus 2-2 Tottenham La Vecchia Signora llegaba con racha de 7 partidos sin recibir gol (o sea, en todo el 2018), manteniéndose a un punto del líder Napoli en la Serie A. La Juventus, un equipo con experiencia y prestigio, llegaba con muchas ausencias, como Dybala, Barzagli, Matuidi y Lichsteiner. Enfrente, tenía a un equipo joven y con hambre de triunfo, con ese ataque letal de Harry Kane, Christian Ericksen y Dele Ali. La Juve se puso adelante 2-0 muy temprano (a los 9 minutos) con doblete de Higuaín. Sin embargo, a partir de ese momento el balón estuvo en posesión de los Spurs, quienes lograron el empate histórico ante la valla invicta de Buffon. Goles de Kane y Ericksen mandan la serie a Wembley con ligera ventaja para los ingleses. El momento más importante vino cuando Higuaín falló el penal (y su triplete) que hubiera finiquitado la eliminatoria, justo al final del primer tiempo. Basel 0-4 Manchester City. Para los que tenían dudas de si el Manchester City era uno de los candidatos más fuertes a levantar la Champions League, este encuentro prueba que sí. Los Citizens ya iban 3-0 a los 23 minutos, con demasiada facilidad ante un pobre equipo suizo que de por sí tenía pocas posibilidades.

Así parecía el primer tiempo cuando, con gol de Rabiot, se pusieron en frente. Sin embargo, un error infantil de Lo Celso al cometer un penal muy claro sobre Toni Kroos, provocó que Cristiano Ronaldo anotara desde los 11 pasos (ha anotado en todos los encuentros de esta UCL). El segundo tiempo, a pesar del dominio parisino, acabó a favor de los madridistas después de la entrada de Asensio, quien con 2 asistencias (a cristiano y a Marcelo), se consagró como la figura del partido.
