Brain Bowl Team gana el 7º Campeonato Nacional Orlando, FL - El 25 de febrero en Minneapolis, el equipo rojo de Valencia llevó a casa el oro, ganando el torneo del National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Community College Championship Tournament (CCCT)). El equipo ganador consistió en: Aidan Bohan-Moulton (segundo año), Melisa Nicolas (segundo año), Jack Ogozaly (primer año) y Miguel Hernández (tercer año). Valencia tradicionalmente lleva a dos equipos - los equipos Rojo y Negro - a todos los torneos. El equipo negro también ganó un puesto en el CCCT y terminó 10º de 24 equipos de todo Estados Unidos. Brain Bowl Team wins 7th National Championship Orlando, FL - On Feb. 25 in Minneapolis, Valencia’s Red team brought home the gold, by winning the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Community College Championship Tournament (CCCT). The winning team consisted of: Aidan Bohan-Moulton (second year), Melisa Nicolas (second year), Jack Ogozaly (first year), and Miguel Hernandez (third year). Valencia traditionally takes two teams — the Red and Black teams — to all tournaments. The Black team also earned a berth in the CCCT and finished 10th out of 24 teams from around the United States. That team comprised Calice Newkirk (third year), Elena Torres-Ponce (second year), Joseph Pajuelo (second year), Brittany Van Epps (first year), and Arjun Singh (a dual enrolled student who is a senior at Olympia HS). Valencia had some standout performances from Aidan BohanMoulton, who was the #5 overall scorer in the tournament, while Arjun Singh was 13th . The Red team beat longtime archrival Chipola College, a two-year state college in Marianna, Fla., in the final on the last toss-up question. Valencia’s Black Team was behind by 10 points, when the moderator asked a question
about “a quantity measured in physics.” The last words of the clue were to “name this quantity measured in farads,” at which point Valencia’s Melisa Nicolas buzzed in correctly with “capacitance.” Valencia then earned 20 points on a bonus question about Norse myth — and won by the slimmest of margins, 10 points, noted Brain Bowl coach Chris Borglum. To bring home the title, “Jack Ogozaly led Red team scorers in the final match against Chipola, including crushing a toss-up (question) on Frederick the Great after only hearing the clue that ‘this ruler wept after a childhood friend was executed,’ ” said Borglum, who doubles as an English professor at Valencia’s Winter Park Campus. Borglum has coached Valencia’s Brain Bowl team for 24 years and is assisted by Valencia math professor Damion Hammock, a former Valencia Brain Bowl player. Borglum is a former Brain Bowl player too — having played at the University of Florida from 1987-93. The Brain Bowl teams will compete in the Florida College System Activities Association tournament at the end of March, then the NAQT Intercollegiate (where Valencia will play against heavyweights, including Ivy League teams) and the college will be hosting a tournament in early May.

Darren Soto anuncia que ha seleccionado a José, un DREAMer (beneficiario de DACA) de Florida, para presenciar el primer mensaje del presidente Donald Trump en una sesión conjunta del Congreso y para representar a los inmigrantes que trabajan duro que están siendo blanco de esta administración. José es graduado de UF y uno de los votantes de Soto. Biografía de José (su apellido no se indica por motivos de protección): José fue traído desde San Pedro Sula, Honduras por sus padres cuando tenía solo 11 años de edad en busca de una mejor calidad de vida. Es recién graduado de la Universidad de Florida con un bachillerato en Ciencias Políticas (con concentración de inmigración) y una especialización en antropología. Previamente ha trabajado y completo su internado en la Cámara de Representante. En adición, ha laborado con numerosas organizaciones y compañías de programación y abogando por
los derechos de los estudiantes e inmigrantes en Florida. Durante sus años universitarios, fue electo presidente de una de las organizaciones de estudiantes del Valencia College antes de transferirse a la Universidad de Florida (UF). Congressman Soto host a DREAMer as his special guest for Presidential Address Washington, D.C.-U.S. Representative Darren Soto announced that he has selected Jose, a DREAMer (DACA recipient) from Florida, to witness President Donald Trump's first message to a joint session of Congress and to put a face on the hard-working immigrants who are being targeted by this administration. Jose is a UF graduate and one of Soto's constituents Biography of Jose (last name withheld for his protection): Jose was brought from San Pedro Sula, Honduras to the United States by his parents when he was only 11 years old in search of a better life. He is a recent graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science (with a concentration on immigration) and a minor in Anthropology. He has previously worked and has completed an internship at the U.S. House of Representatives. Additionally, he has worked with numerous organizations and broadcast companies advocating for students and immigrant rights in
Florida. During his college years, he was elected president of one of Valencia College’s student organizations before transferring to the University of Florida (UF). While at UF, Jose founded the first Voto Latino chapter in the state and was an active member of Hispanic Latino Affairs, the Hispanic Student Association, Student Government Senate, and Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. Throughout his childhood, Jose always helped his family by working and taking care of his two younger sisters. Living in a low-income area has taught Jose the value of an education, which has encouraged him to be the first in his family to graduate from a top institution. Jose will soon start training as an organizer with SEIU in Miami. "I am honored to host Jose a DACA recipient from Kissimmee and proud to stand with our DREAMers across the Nation. En Español - Dominicanos Aniversario de Independencia parte de la organización Latinos Central Florida, Inc., y la Casa Dominicana de la Cultura. La ceremonia, que se celebra por duodécima vez en nuestro Condado, fue sencilla pero significativa, donde los dominicanos y la comunidad en general se unieron para honrar a los héroes de esa nación tanto del pasado como del presente. La invitada especial al evento fue la Sra. María Trinidad Sánchez, quien lleva el mismo nombre de la heroína que junto a Concepción Bona, confeccionó la primera bandera dominicana que se izó la noche del 27 de febrero del 1844 en Santo Domingo.

St Cloud - Noticias / News Municipio de St. Cloud recuerda a los ciudadanos a cambiar baterías de detectores de humo • Les recuerden a sus amigos, St. Cloud, FL – El horario de verano comienza el 12 de marzo y termina el 5 de noviembre a las 2 a.m. Los relojes son adelantados una hora en la primavera y retrocedidos una hora en el otoño. El programa Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® (cambie su reloj, cambie su batería), patrocinado por Energizer y la Asociación Internacional de Jefes de Bomberos, y el investigador de incendios del Municipio de St. Cloud aconsejan a todos a cambiar y poner a la prueba las baterías. St. Cloud Utilities implementa facturación electrónica existentes, la nueva solución St. Cloud, FL – El personal del St. Cloud Utilities (SCU) está muy entusiasmado al anunciar su nuevo servicio electrónico de facturación y pago, patrocinado por el sistema seguro de facturación y pago Invoice Cloud. City of St. Cloud’s fire marshal reminds citizens to change batteries March 12 St. Cloud, FL – Daylight saving time begins March 12 and ends Nov. 5. Clocks are moved ahead one hour in the spring and moved back one hour in fall (“Spring Forward, Fall Back”). The Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program, sponsored byEnergizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the City of St. Cloud’s fire marshal advise everyone to change and test batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when daylight saving time begins and ends. St. Cloud Fire Marshal Richard Tonks specifically recommends residents to: • Change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year. • Test the alarms monthly.

St. Cloud Utilities implements electronic billing In addition to the existing payment St. Cloud, FL – St. Cloud Utilities (SCU) staff is thrilled to announce its new electronic billing and payment service sponsored by the secure e-billing and payment system Invoice Cloud. Customers participating in paperless billing will receive an email notification with a link to the Portable Document Format (PDF) document of their actual bill when it is ready for viewing. Also, customer bills may now be viewed online at any time at the customer’s convenience. The new online billing and payment service compliments the City’s efforts to go green and to reduce costs and paper usage. Utility customers are encouraged to enroll in the free electronic billing service and opt out of paper statements. SCU staff is committed to providing customers several options to pay their SCU bills in the most convenient way as possible. Existing payment options available to customers include a free drive-up drop box located on the west side of City Hall, a free drop box located inside City Hall, free payment by mail, free electronic check payment online, free payment by bank draft and free inperson payment at the full-service SCU Customer Walk-In Center located in City Hall, Bldg. A, first level. Customers may also have the option to pay their SCU bill through their financial institution; however these payments may not post to their utility account on the same day. Consulado de Mexico - Conmemorando a la Mujer Dia de la Mujer en el Consulado de México Orlando, FL - El Cónsul de México en Orlando, Juan Sabines Guerrero no ha querido pasar por alto esta fecha tan importante en el mundo y ha querido reconocer el papel fundamental y contribución dentro de la sociedad, celebrando el evento “Mujeres por Mujeres”. Aunque la celebración se llevó a cabo en el Consulado de Mexico, estuvieron presentes mujeres de México, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, República Dominicana entre otras. El Día Internacional de la Mujer declarado por la ONU, en recuerdo a las 146 mujeres trabajadoras fallecidas en una fábrica textil de
Nueva York en 1911, víctimas de un incendio y sobre todo de la desigualdad de género. Por ello, el Consulado de México en Orlando y agencias aliadas llevaron a cabo un amplio programa para las mujeres migrantes con servicios, talleres y pláticas para su empoderamiento en tres ejes: • Empoderamiento económico de la mujer migrante • Empoderamiento de la mujer en la salud • Empoderamiento de la mujer para una vida libre de violencia. ¡Felicidades a todas!

Death investigation in Kissimmee Osceola County, FL– Osceola County Sheriff’s Office detectives are working a death investigation. At around 2 am on March 4, 2017, deputies responded to a shooting call in 2700 Michigan Avenue in Kissimmee. Upon their arrival, they found an adult male fatally wounded. Osceola County, FL– On March 2, 2017, at about 10:00 PM, Osceola County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the area of 4400 Rambler Avenue in Saint Cloud. Deputies received a report of possible human remains located in a wooded area. Upon their arrival, deputies confirmed
the remains to be human skeletal remains. On March 3, 2017, investigators along with crime scene technicians processed the scene. The human remains were taken by the medical examiner. The person has not been identified, however, foul play is not suspected and the investigation is ongoing.

Bronze statue in Palmer’s likeness to be unveiled during 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational Orlando, FL.— Capturing his energy and essence, a 13foot bronze statue of the late Arnold Palmer will be unveiled Saturday, March 11 and on display throughout the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. The statue is a replica of one that stands at Wake Forest University, Palmer’s alma mater. Weighing 1,392 pounds, the statue depicts Palmer as he finishes a powerful swing and was inspired by Palmer’s early career, including his 1964 Masters victory. The statue was originally created by renowned sculptor Bruce Wolfe in his Northern California studio. Wolfe spent time with Palmer at his golf club in Latrobe, Pa, and then gathered more than 100 photographs of Palmer from different angles. He drafted renderings and small-scale models before the sculpting process began. The sculpture took eight months to complete, after which a rubber and plaster mold was made and transported to a foundry in New York. It was cast and

Elfrid Payton, the team’s starting point guard, played a key role in the win against the Bulls. Payton put up a triple double for the second night in a row finishing with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 14 assists. Evan Fournier had a big game as well putting up 20 points and 9 rebounds. Payton played well in their Monday night loss to the Knicks and grabbed his first triple double of the season with 16 points, 10 assists, and 11 rebounds. The Magic lead for the first three quarters but let the Knicks dominate them in the fourth. Fournier, who finished with 25 points, scored 11 of those in the first quarter.

The night included a special postgame concert featuring award-winning salsa artist Jerry Rivera. The Puerto Rican-born Rivera has performed in Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, Spain, Ecuador, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Sweden, France, Japan and the U.S. In 2011, he was one of the four judges for Idol Puerto Rico (the Puerto Rican version of American Idol). In addition to the concert, fans enjoyed Latino-inspired music, dance, food and more. The Magic and Chase are longtime supporters of the Hispanic community of Central Florida with Noche Latina being a part of a long line of efforts connected to Orlando’s diverse community. Another one of those efforts is Magic Spanish broadcaster, Joey Colon, in his 19th season with the team. Colon handles all Spanish radio broadcasts for the Magic. Colon stands as the only Puerto Rican broadcaster in the NBA today.

A new, nextgeneration Belle topiary from “Beauty and the Beast” will debut in France, and a redesigned “Cars” play garden will introduce a colorful new character topiary sure to capture children’s imaginations. Fresh, farm-market food and beverage flavors will debut at the new Northern Bloom and The Berry Basket Outdoor Kitchens that will join 13 returning Outdoor Kitchens. Delectable chefinspired bites from Northern Bloom include Seared Scallops with French Green Beans and Butter Potatoes with brown-butter vinaigrette and Applewood smoked bacon. The new generation of princess topiaries (Snow White, Anna and Elsa – the first to be designed and created with topiary facial features) will welcome a brand-new Belle topiary as fans remember her from the Oscar-winning Disney film, “Beauty and the Beast.” Located outside the France Pavilion with the Beast topiary, Belle will come to life with sculpted facial features and her yellow ball gown created with golden blooming Joseph’s Coat and Creeping Jenny plants. Another festival first will be a 6-foot-
tall topiary of Figment, the feisty dragon mascot of the park’s Imagination! Pavilion, perched atop a 5-foot-diameter ball fashioned from yellow Joseph’s Coat. This year’s Epcot front-entrance topiary garden, “Welcome Spring Fun, Food and Flowers,” inspired by a vintage Walt Disney short film will spring to life with a floral-festooned maypole featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Daisy and Pluto. The popular Garden Rocks concert series will expand to four days each week, with three concerts each Friday through Monday presenting pop musicians that span multiple genres over five decades. New acts this year: Simple Plan, Exposé and Berlin featuring Terri Nunn. Festival favorite Jon Secada kicked off the series March 3 and 4, and Dennis DeYoung featuring the music of STYX wraped up the long weekend March 5-6. Redesigned interactive play gardens will include the new “Cars”-themed Road to Florida 500 garden introducing the new “Cruz” character topiary from the June 2017 release of Disney•Pixar’s “Cars 3.” Music Garden Melodies play area will return with a new garden design, musical note topiary elements and climbing nets. Guests can plan on special appearances related to Earth Day and other spring activities including: March 31-April 2 and April 28-30: Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment and Conservation Specialists from Disney’s Animal Kingdom; April 22-24: Celebrate Earth Day with featured personalities and activities; May 5-7: Discover the Bounty of Florida Agriculture by learning from Sunshine State specialists; May 12-14: Florida Federation of Garden Clubs presents floral designs that defy description. The Butterflies on the Go garden will return with the story of the Monarch’s epic journey across the continent and
will feature butterflies emerging from their chrysalises. On the way to the new Soarin’ Around the World attraction in The Land Pavilion, guests can discover gardens featuring edible flowers, plants that benefit health and healing, and a pollinator paradise. Dozens of Disney-crafted “flower towers” and beds of multi-colored blooms will transform the park’s landscape. At least 70,000 bedding plants will surround the Future World east and west lakes alone; on the water, 220 mini-gardens will be set afloat. The festival, including all gardening programs, exhibits, concerts, complimentary English Tea Garden tours and special appearances, is included in regular Epcot admission.
