No early release on four wednesdays during statewide testing The Osceola County School District is planning ahead for the upcoming spring administration of the Florida Standards Assessment by allowing students to have a full day of school on the Wednesdays when statewide tests will be administered. As such, parents should be advised that there will be no early release of students on the following Wednesdays: April 13, April 20, April 27, and May 4, 2016 Students will be dismissed from school those days as they normally would on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. By lengthening the Wednesdays during testing, it allows more flexibility of the school-wide testing schedule.

Schools will now have options to build in more opportunities for breaks between the different testing sessions to allow students to stretch, relax, and refocus. Parents and students are also reminded that the 2016-2017 academic calendar for next school year can be found on the district's website at www.osceolaschools.net. The first day of school for students will be on Wednesday, August 10, 2016. This earlier start date than in the past allows for the first semester and end-of-course/semester exams to finish before Winter Break. Contact: Dana Schafer, Community Relations – 407-870-4007

Gracias, Presidente Barack Obama

President Obama in Cuba The White House, Washington - ¡Hola desde Cuba! Michelle, the girls, and I are here in Havana on our first full day in Cuba. Cubans have lined the streets to welcome us, and it’s humbling to be the first U.S. president in nearly 90 years to visit a country and a people just 90 miles from our shores. Like so many Americans, I've only known the isolation that has existed between our two governments. I was born in 1961, the year of the Bay of Pigs invasion. A year later, a Cold War confrontation over Cuba pushed the world as close as it’s ever been to nuclear war. As the decades passed, the mistrust between our governments resulted

in heartache for our two peoples, including Cuban Americans, many of whom have endured decades of separation from their homeland and relatives. I’ve come to Havana to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people. I'm here to bury the last vestige of the Cold War in the Americas and to forge a new era of understanding to help improve the daily lives of the Cuban people. There continue to be real and important differences between our governments, including profound differences on the way to promote safety, security, opportunity, and human rights. But there’s so much Americans and Cubans share -- our cultures and passions, our hopes for the future, not to mention a love of baseball. I know one visit, and one president, cannot erase the decades of history that have left so many Cubans in poverty or exile. But sometimes the most important changes begin with the smallest step. I believe in the Cuban people and their desire to build a future of their own choosing. And I believe that changing the way we do things between our countries will, over time, help make that possible. So I’m looking forward to meeting and hearing directly from Cubans from all walks of life. And I’m confident that, working together with the Cuban people, our two countries can begin a new journey together that delivers progress for both our peoples. Thank you, President Barack Obama

Four Free Resources for New Small Businesses partnership between UCF, the Florida By: Mercedes F. McCall, Vice President and Area Relationship Manager, Florida Bank of Commerce Kissimmee Office So you’ve decided to take a leap of faith and start your own business? It can be a daunting task, but with big risk also comes the opportunity for big reward. Fortunately, start-up businesses in Central Florida have an array of free resources at their disposal – from mentorship programs to small business incubators to professional service organizations that honestly want to see your new venture succeed. The U.S. economy was built on the hard work and dedication of small business owners (who sometimes grew their enterprises to become very large businesses), so it is encouraging to see resources still being poured into helping small business owners get started. Here are a few free, local resources to consider tapping into as you begin your new venture: 1) The Small Business Administration (SBA) has pre-approved lenders who have a proven track record of success. Verified SBA lenders, such as Kissimmee’s own Florida Bank of Commerce, can work with small businesses to see if an SBA 7(a) loan is the best option for them. These loans help small businesses qualify for funding easier and with better terms, so they can preserve working capital while still increasing cash flow. Before approaching an SBA lender about considering your business for a loan, however, small business owners are advised to prepare a well thought-out business plan and pull together financial information to share with the potential lender. By providing a clear picture of your business plans and viability at the onset, the lender can give you much better direction about your lending options. 2) The University of Central Florida offers a Business Incubation Program to help new and struggling earlystage businesses grow. The program is a university-driven, community

High Tech Corridor Council, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties, and the cities of Apopka, Kissimmee, Orlando and Winter Springs. With seven Central Florida locations – including one in downtown Kissimmee – UCF’s Business Incubation Program is a great way to jump-start your success… at no cost to you! More information is available at https://incubator.ucf.edu. 3) The Hispanic Business Initiative Fund (HBIF) is the leading Hispanic economic development, nonprofit organization specialized in providing bilingual assistance to Hispanic entrepreneurs who are trying to establish or expand their business in Florida. The organization's mission is to strengthen the economy of Florida through quality business development and training to Hispanic entrepreneurs. HBIF offers a variety of services – from business development counseling to minority certification support to entrepreneurial grants, and so much more – specifically tailored for Hispanic small business owners. More information can be found at http://hbifflorida.org. 4) weVENTURE Powered by Florida Institute of Technology is a not-for-profit organization designed to help women become entrepreneurial leaders and thinkers and to successfully achieve economic independence through entrepreneurship. This community resource offers business coaching, business education, mentoring, and purposeful networking programs in order to assist female entrepreneurs in start-up businesses, emerging businesses and second-stage growthoriented companies. More information is available at http://weventure.fit.edu. If you’re interested in speaking with a pre-approved SBA lender at Florida Bank of Commerce in Kissimmee, visit 1125 E. Oak St., Kissimmee, Florida 34744 or call 407-870-8318. The bank’s lobby is open Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visit http://www. fbcbank.com for more information.

Another tough week has passed for the Orlando Magic Orlando, FL - Last Friday, the Magic faced the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Amway Center. The Magic got off to a competitive start up by two at the end of the first quarter. The Cavs rallied back and took a slight lead going into the half. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that they held on to their lead. The 109 to 103 loss was another tough one for the Magic, especially Victor Oladipo who had a career night. Photos Courtesy: Orlando Magic

In fact, it’s safe to say without Oladipo the outcome could have been much worse. Oladipo put up 45 points and had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Evan Fournier had 18 points and Jason Smith added 10 off the bench. The rest of the team had a poor shooting night. The team traveled to Canada to play the Raptors in Toronto on Sunday. Thankfully, the team’s shooting was much better than Friday but the Magic still couldn’t grab the win. There seems to be a consistent breakdown in the fourth quarter with the Magic. Without Nik Vucevic in key moments, the Magic are getting calls against them and being outrebounded.

The Magic are still struggling to draw fouls. In Sunday’s game, Orlando got to the line 18 times versus Toronto who took 45 free throws. The 105 to 100 loss was another tough one to swallow. But the Magic have just under three weeks left in the regular season. On Monday they stopped in Boston to play the Celtics. Orlando looked tired throughout the game. Despite an early lead, the Magic were unable to hold on as the Boston pushed the pace of the game and began to take the lead. Oladipo led the team with 25 points and 8 rebounds. But the Magic fell 107 to 96 in Boston. Wednesday night the Magic played in Detroit against the Pistons. Elfrid Payton found his rhythm and led the team with 20 points and 10 assists. But the Magic suffered their fourth loss in one week 102 to 118. The final 11 games of the season are here and the Magic are still without Nik Vucevic. A playoff push is possible but unlikely as they have struggled to get a win without their starting center. The Magic will take on the Heat tonight in South Florida. Their next home game is tomorrow night against the Chicago Bulls.

After Early Goal from Larin, Lions’ Defensive Stand Secures First Win of the Season New York, N.Y. – Orlando City SC (1-0-2, 5 points) managed to deliver a full team performance at historic Yankee Stadium to secure the first three points of the season with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC (1-1-1, 4 points) on Friday night. The Lions pressured early in what would turn out to be a very physical encounter by the two sophomore MLS teams. Orlando’s pressure on NYC’s backline finally resulted in a goal after Rafael Ramos delivered a beautiful cross into the box. NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders managed to get a hand on it, only to see it headed into the goal by a waiting Cyle Larin. Larin now has four career goals in Yankee Stadium, as well as three goals on the season, which places him tied for first in the league after three weeks. New York were relentless in their attack, with the first real chance coming in the eighth minute when

Mix Diskerud fired a howler of shot saved by Orlando goalkeeper Joe Bendik. Bendik would deliver a career performance on the night, preserving the clean sheet with six saves in total. The highlight of the night came in the 60th minute as Diskerud broke free for a one-onone against Bendik, and the shot was parried away clear of danger. The pace in the second half remained very high, with both teams eager to find the back of the net.
