Salud / Health Nemours y UCF transforman la educación para niños hospitalizados Orlando, FL – Nemours Children's Hospital en Orlando y UCF anunciaron el lanzamiento de PedsAcademy (PEEDS-Academy), un programa único en su clase que brinda educación altamente especializada para niños con enfermedades crónicas y hospitalizados de una manera que se adapta a sus necesidades específicas.

A través de PedsAcademy, más de 50 profesores de UCF y estudiantes universitarios trabajan en estrecha colaboración con los médicos para impartir instrucción STEM a pacientes hospitalizados utilizando herramientas de aprendizaje de alta tecnología como realidad virtual, robótica y más.

El programa, que comenzó en agosto, utiliza robots, telepresencia de realidad virtual inmersiva, impresoras 3D y MakerSpaces para impartir lecciones que van desde la programación básica de computadoras hasta el aprendizaje de mundos submarinos.

Las lecciones son personalizadas para las áreas de interés específicas de un niño, incorporando temas como superhéroes, animales o deportes.

Nemours and UCF transform education for hospitalized children Orlando, FL – Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando and UCF announced the launch of PedsAcademy (PEEDSAcademy), a first-of-its kind program that provides highly specialized schooling to chronically ill, hospitalized children in a way that’s tailored to their specific disease. Through PedsAcademy, more than 50 UCF faculty and student teachers work closely with physicians to deliver daily STEM instruction to hospitalized patients using high-tech learning tools such as virtual reality, robotics and more.

The program, which began in August, uses robots, immersive

virtual reality telepresence, 3D printers and MakerSpaces to deliver lessons that range from basic computer programming to learning about undersea worlds. Lessons are personalized to a child’s specific interest areas, incorporating themes like superheroes, animals or sports.

PedsAcademy is the world’s first pediatric school program that uses curriculum specifically tailored to a child’s disease. Teaching methods and tasks are based on research into cognitive development and the effects of specific diseases on learning, so patients are taught using learning tools conducive to their physical limitations and sensory conditions.

Instruction takes place at the bedside of long-term patients and in outpatient settings like the Nemours’ Infusion Center where children are treated for cancer and blood disorders, kidney disease, and immune system disorders. In some cases, VR goggles are such an effective distraction, they are used as an alternative to sedation.

On an average day, 40-60 children are taught through PedsAcademy.

Patients may receive three hours or more of instruction per day and may begin participating as soon as they are admitted and their care plans allow. The siblings of patients can also participate in the instruction.

The PedsAcademy teaching team is comprised of UCF faculty members, student researchers, postdoctoral scholars and dozens of student interns. The students, all pre-service teachers, complete a semester of study at Nemours, providing instruction to patients under the supervision of a faculty member while developing new skills for teaching special populations such as hospitalized children.

The program was inspired by research showing that education is disrupted when children face lifethreatening illnesses or suffer from chronic health conditions, often leading to an inability to keep pace and failure to perform at grade level.

These educational deficiencies affect children into their later years, and can limit their achievements and social function. The program is funded through grants and private donations.

Evento de seguridad de tráfico en Turkey Lake Service Plaza del Turnpike Orlando, FL – Dos servicios de emergencia en todo el país trabajan incansablemente para ayudar a salvar vidas en los lugares donde ocurren accidentes e incidentes de tráfico. Traffic Safety Event at Turnpike’s Turkey Lake Service Plaza Orlando, FL – Emergency responders across the nation work tirelessly to help save lives at the scene of traffic crashes and incidents.

Every year, hundreds of emergency responders experiences close calls, or are struck and either injured or killed while on incident scenes.

November 11-17, 2018 has been designated by the Federal Highway Administration as National Traffic Incident Response Awareness Week to draw public awareness to the dangers emergency responders face when responding to a traffic incident.

Motorists need to Move Over or Slow Down when passing an incident scene to provide a protective buffer for responders to work and for the safety of motorists.

Representatives from the Florida Highway Patrol, Orange County Fire Department, Road Rangers/State Farm Safety Patrol and Turnpike Towing partners will be on-site with vehicles and will be available to discuss Florida’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move over one lane for first responders and law enforcement on the shoulder or in a travel lane or slow down to a speed that is 20 MPH less than the posted speed limit.

The event featured: The Florida Highway Patrol, A Road Ranger/State Farm Safety Patrol vehicle will be on site and tow operators, among others.

Re-elected School Board members Ricky Booth (District 5) and Clarence Thacker (District 4) received the oath of office, along with newly-elected School Board members Teresa “Terry” Castillo (District 1).

“We sacrifice a lot being elected officials, I miss many of family events and I thank my family for understanding how important this position is to me, but they also understand how important the education system of this county is to the quality of our county moving forward.” said Ricky Booth.

Given that we are currently in the enrollment period for the Healthcare Marketplace (Obamacare) plans and other individual and family plans, consumers may be more susceptible to these fraudulent calls. Florida Blue wants to make sure that no one is a victim of identity theft or fraudulent marketing, so we want to educate consumers about how to identify a fraudulent call about their health insurance.

Here we point out some important points about these fraudulent calls: •Many of these calls refer to "Blue Cross" or "Blue Cross and Blue Shield."

Our authorized agents only refer to us as "Florida Blue" and not in that way or other variations.

•Some of the calls say they offer plans from Florida Blue, Blue Cross, or Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and other insurance companies. Florida Blue does not make calls to members offering other products or health plans. If you are offered plans from different insurance companies, it is an unauthorized call.

Florida Blue contacts its members on a routine basis to help them get the care and support they need to stay healthy and save money, and at other times, our agents can call people to help them sign

up or renew their plan with Florida Blue.

How to recognize an authorized call from Florida Blue: •Florida Blue and those calling on behalf of Florida Blue will immediately identify themselves, letting members know the reason for the call, and asking a certain kind of information (such as birth date) to make sure we are talking to the right person .

•We will never require members to give us financial or banking information, nor will we ask you for your social security number over the phone.

•If they feel something is wrong with the call, consumers should immediately hang up and call us at the phone number they regularly use to reach us or the toll-free number on the back of their member card.

Orlando, FL – After Mo Bamba was selected sixth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, one of the many things the 7-foot center was excited about at the start of his NBA journey was helping children throughout Central Florida reach their full potential.

As you might expect from someone

who aspires to embolden kids, the 20-year-old wasted no time jumping into action by surprising youth at a Magic Youth Academy Basketball Camp in August. While walking them through drills on the court, Bamba relayed some very inspiring messages to all the children. Heartened by the fact that his teammates care just as much as he does about helping children achieve their goals, Bamba was elated to join Aaron Gordon, Terrence Ross and Wes Iwundu at the 28th Annual .

More than 200 golfers participated in this year’s OMYF Open, which raised a record $240,000 for under-served children in Central Florida.

The Magic and the DeVos family are committed to the community. Over the last 28 years, more than $23 million has been distributed to local nonprofit community organizations through the

OMYF, which is committed to helping youth realize their full potential.

Two members are appointed by the Osceola Board of County Commissioners, two are appointed by the Kissimmee City Commission and one is appointed by the Polk Board of County Commissioners. Toho’s five-member board is responsible for approving all its operating policies and its $124 million operating budget. Toho was established for the sole purpose of providing regional stewardship over water resources in Osceola County. Armed Robbery Osceola County, FL - On November 6, 2018, at approximately 10:50 A.M., Osceola County Sheriff deputies responded to 1507 Fortune Retail Circle (Aldo Jewelry), in reference to a report of an attempted armed robbery. The victim advised a black male, wearing a black mask and gloves violently forced his way into the business just as his wife was entering the store. The male threw

his wife to the ground and pointed a handgun at him, demanding money and jewelry. The victim’s shop was not set up, and not yet open for business, so the victim had nothing to give the suspect. Once the suspect realized there was no money or jewelry, he left the store and entered the passenger side of a gray, 20092013, Kia Forte. The vehicle fled the parking lot and headed east on Fortune Road, towards St. Cloud.

El Congreso aprobó una importante reforma tributaria que afecta tanto a individuos como a empresas y que fue firmada por el presidente el 22 de diciembre de 2017.

Se conoce comúnmente la Ley de Empleos y Reducción de Impuestos, TCJA o reforma tributaria. A lo largo de 2018, el IRS ha estado trabajando estrechamente con los socios en la industria de preparación de impuestos y de software de impuestos para implementar la nueva ley y garantizar que los contribuyentes puedan contar con el IRS y los métodos de preparacion y presentación de impuestos que elijan al momento de presentar impuestos el próximo año.

Learn how the new tax law affects tax returns next year Washington – The Internal Revenue Service today advised taxpayers about steps they can take now to ensure smooth processing of their 2018 tax return and avoid surprises when they file next year.

This is the first in a series of reminders to help taxpayers get ready for the upcoming tax filing season. Additionally, the IRS has recently updated a special page on its website with steps to take now for the 2019 tax filing season. New IRS Publication 5307 helps individuals understand Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Major tax reform that affects both individuals and businesses was approved by Congress and signed by the President on Dec. 22, 2017. It’s commonly referred to as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, or tax reform.

Throughout 2018, the IRS has been working closely with partners in the tax return preparation and tax software industries to implement the new law and ensure taxpayers can count on the IRS, tax professionals and tax software programs when it’s time to file their returns. Now there is a new publication that will help taxpayers learn how tax reform affects their taxes. IRS Publication 5307, Tax Reform Basics for Individuals and Families, is now available on IRS. gov/getready. While the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act law includes tax changes for individuals and businesses, this publication breaks down what’s new for the 2018 federal tax return individual taxpayers will be filing in 2019.

Taxpayers can access Publication 5307 at IRS.gov/getready, along with other important information about steps taxpayers can take now to ensure smooth processing of their 2018 tax return and avoid surprises when they file next year. Because of the many changes in the tax law, refunds may be different than prior years for some taxpayers. Some may even owe an unexpected tax bill when they file their 2018 tax return next year. To avoid these kinds of surprises, taxpayers should perform a Paycheck Checkup to help determine if they need to adjust their withholding or make estimated or additional tax payments now. For a faster refund, choose e-file, electronically filing a tax return is the most accurate way to prepare and file. Errors delay refunds and the easiest way to avoid them is to e-file. Using tax preparation

software is the best and simplest way to file a complete and accurate tax return. The software guides taxpayers through the process and does all the math. The IRS is working with the tax community to incorporate the tax law changes and form updates. Nearly 90 percent of all returns are electronically filed. There are several e-file options: IRS Free File, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs, Commercial tax preparation software, or Tax professional.

Use Direct Deposit, Combining Direct Deposit with electronic filing is the fastest way for a taxpayer to get their refund. With Direct Deposit, a refund goes directly into a taxpayer’s bank account. There’s no reason to worry about a lost, stolen or undeliverable refund check.

This is the same electronic transfer system now used to deposit nearly 98 percent of all Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits. Nearly four out of five federal tax refunds are Direct Deposited. Direct Deposit also saves taxpayer dollars. It costs the nation’s taxpayers more than $1 for every paper refund check issued but only a dime for each Direct Deposit.

Refunds held for those claiming EITC or ACTC until mid-February By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds for people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before midFebruary. The law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with EITC or ACTC. This law change, which took effect at the beginning of 2017, helps ensure that taxpayers receive the refund they’re due by giving the IRS more time to detect and prevent fraud. As always, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on getting a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Be aware that some returns may require additional review for a variety of reasons and may take longer. For example, the IRS, along with its partners in the state’s and the nation’s tax industry, continue to strengthen security reviews to help protect against identity theft and refund fraud.
