Osceola County - Noticias / News Grieb Honored with Public Policy Award by REALTORS® The Association was originally formed Osceola County, Florida – Commissioner Cheryl Grieb was recently honored for her work on public policy issues as the Osceola County Association of REALTORS® recently presented her an award for her work at the local, state and national levels. “As a Realtor and an elected official Cheryl gets it,” said Carol Platt, Association Executive. “She plays a key role in communicating crucial policy issues with law makers. She has helped in building bridges between policymakers and our profession.”

Osceola County Planning New Fire Station, Buenaventura Lakes Osceola County, Fl – A new fire station planned for Buenaventura Lakes will improve public safety for residents, while creating additional recreational opportunities. The existing station will move about a third of a mile southeast to a location at the corner of Buenaventura Lakes Boulevard and Royal Palm Drive. It will sit on approximately 3 acres on the eastern edge of the 65th Infantry Veterans Park. This is a small footprint – and the rest of the park’s 31.33 acres will not be impacted. In fact, Osceola County will add amenities to the park – including two new picnic shelters, domino tables, sidewalks and an area for military memorials. There also will be a “caretaker effect” for the park because of the fire station’s 24/7 staffing. Additionally, the station will offer something new – a community room for small meetings. The County is also studying the best recreational uses for the old station site. Built more than 30 years ago,
in 1985, the existing station pre-dates today’s full-time professional firefighting service. Most significantly the current wood-framed structure, built by volunteers, cannot withstand severe weather, meaning that firefighters must evacuate when the community needs them most. This will be the second station to use the department’s new prototype design, the station will be environmentally friendly – with paint that has zero volatile organic compounds and lighting provided by energy-efficient LED lights.

Osceola County News El Secretario de la Corte del Condado Osceola reduce personal El secretario de la Corte del Condado Osceola, Armando Ramírez, publica la siguiente información con respecto a una reducción en el personal que ocurrió el 18 de enero de 2017: Tan pronto como resultó evidente que la Corporación de Operaciones de la Corte de la Florida iba a aprobar una reducción de 1.4 millones de dólares en el presupuesto del año fiscal 2016-17 del Condado Osceola, comencé a hacer cambios organizacionales para salvaguardar tantos empleos como fuese posible. Osceola County Clerk of the Circuit Court Reduces Personnel Osceola County, Florida – The Osceola Clerk of Court, Armando Ramirez released the following information regarding a reduction in work force that occurred on January 18, 2017: As soon as it became apparent that the Florida Clerks of Court Operations Corporation was going to approve a 1.4-milliondollar reduction in the Osceola County Clerk of Court 201617 fiscal year budget, I began making organizational changes to save as many jobs as possible. While today’s reduction in force eliminated six (6) management positions, it only resulted in the release of four (4) staff members. Two (2) of the positions were vacant and had not been filled due to the upcoming budget cuts. The reduction could have been much worse and could have eliminated as many as twenty-five (25) staff members; however, my executive team took proactive steps in redistributing job responsibilities so that a massive reduction in the work force was avoided. The
decision to release staff was not taken lightly. Many variables were considered in making the determination, including organizational knowledge, tenure, skills and capabilities. In the end, the factor which weighed most heavily was duplication of efforts. The affected individuals will be paid all accrued sick and vacation time, which exceeds the requirements set forth in organizational policy. The individuals will also receive additional payments to their health insurance plan for the month of January resulting in insurance coverage through the end of February 2017. A reorganization of management staff will also accompany these releases to redistribute thet work among the remaining leadership staff. Despite the 1.4-million-dollar budgetary cut, I could ensure minimum impact to the judiciary and maintain the office’s current high level of service.

The White House - Noticias / News Presidente Obama ha concedido más indultos que cualquier presidente en la historia de esta Nación Washington, DC - El 17 de enero de 2017, se les informó a 273 individuos que el presidente les ha dado una segunda oportunidad. Con las 209 concesiones de indulto, el Presidente ha conmutado ahora las sentencias de 1,385 individuos - la mayor de las concesiones de indulto emitidas por cualquier Presidente en la historia de esta nación. Las 1,385 concesiones de indulto del presidente Obama -que incluye 504 penas de cadena perpetua- son también más que el número total de indultos emitidas por los 12 últimos presidentes combinados. While the mercy the President has shown his 1,597 clemency recipients is remarkable, we must remember that clemency is an extraordinary remedy, granted only after the President has concluded that a particular individual has demonstrated a readiness to make use of his or her second chance. Only Congress can achieve the broader reforms needed to ensure over the long run that our criminal justice system operates more fairly and effectively in the service of public safety.

The White House - Noticias / News Discurso semanal: El honor de servirle como Presidente Washington, DC Esta semana, el presidente Obama pronunció su último discurso semanal agradeciendo al pueblo estadounidense por hacer de él un mejor presidente y un mejor hombre. Durante los últimos ocho años, hemos visto la bondad, la adaptación y la esperanza del pueblo estadounidense. Hemos visto lo que es posible cuando nos unimos en el duro, pero vital trabajo del autogobierno - pero no podemos tomar nuestra democracia por sentado. Nuestro éxito como Nación depende de nuestra participación. Depende de todos nosotros ser guardianes de nuestra democracia, y abrazar la tarea de tratar continuamente de mejorar nuestra Nación. A pesar de nuestras diferencias, todos compartimos el mismo título: Ciudadano. Y es por eso que el Presidente Obama espera trabajar a su lado, como ciudadano, durante todos sus días restantes. Esta semana, viajé a Chicago para entregar mi discurso final de despedida a la nación, siguiendo la tradición de los Presidentes antes que yo. Fue una oportunidad para decir gracias. Eso es posible cuando nos reunimos en el duro, lento, a veces frustrante, pero siempre vital trabajo de autogobierno. Pero no podemos dar por sentada nuestra democracia. Todos nosotros, independientemente del partido, debemos lanzarnos al trabajo de la ciudadanía. No sólo cuando hay elecciones, no sólo cuando nuestro propio interés está en juego, sino durante toda la vida. Si está cansado de discutir con extraños en Internet, trate de hablar con uno en la vida real. Si alguno desea un cambio, ate sus zapatos y haga algo de organización. Si usted está decepcionado por sus funcionarios electos, tome un portapapeles, obtenga algunas firmas, y someta su propia candidatura. Nuestro éxito depende de nuestra participación, sin importar de qué manera el péndulo de poder oscile. Weekly Address: The Honor of Serving You as President Washington, DC - This week, President Obama delivered his final weekly address thanking the American people for making him a better President and a better man. Over the past eight years, we have seen the goodness, resilience, and hope of the American people. We’ve seen what’s possible when we come together in the hard, but vital work of self-government – but we can’t take our democracy for granted. Our success as a Nation depends on our participation. It’s up to all of us to be guardians of our democracy, and to embrace the task of continually trying to improve our Nation. Despite our differences, we all share the same title: Citizen. And that is why President Obama looks forward to working by your side, as a citizen, for all of his remaining days. This week, I traveled to Chicago to deliver my final farewell address to the nation, following in the tradition of Presidents before me. It was an opportunity to say thank you. Whether we’ve seen eye-to-eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people – in living rooms and schools; at farms and on factory floors; at diners and on distant military outposts – are what have kept me honest, kept me inspired, and kept me going. Every day, I learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man. Over the course of these eight years, I have seen the goodness, the resilience, and the hope of the American people. I’ve seen neighbors looking out for each other as we rescued our economy from the worst crisis of our lifetimes. I’ve hugged cancer survivors who finally know the security of affordable health care. I’ve seen communities like Joplin rebuild from disaster, and cities like Boston show the world that no terrorist will ever break the American spirit. I’ve seen the hopeful faces of young graduates and our newest military officers. I’ve mourned with grieving
families searching for answers, and found grace in a Charleston church. I’ve seen our scientists help a paralyzed man regain his sense of touch, and our wounded warriors walk again. I’ve seen our doctors and volunteers rebuild after earthquakes and stop pandemics in their tracks. I’ve learned from students who are building robots and curing diseases and who will change the world in ways we can’t even imagine. I’ve seen the youngest of children remind us of our obligations to care for our refugees, to work in peace, and above all to look out for each other. That’s what’s possible when we come together in the hard, slow, sometimes frustrating, but always vital work of self-government. But we can’t take our democracy for granted. All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into the work of citizenship. Not just when there’s an election, not just when our own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime. If you’re tired of arguing with strangers on the internet, try to talk with one in real life. If something needs fixing, lace up your shoes and do some organizing. If you’re disappointed by your elected officials, then grab a clipboard, get some signatures, and run for office yourself. Our success depends on our participation, regardless of which way the pendulum of power swings. It falls on each of us to be guardians of our democracy; to embrace the joyous task we’ve been given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours. Because for all our outward differences, we all share the same proud title: Citizen. It has been the honor of my life to serve you as President. Eight years later, I am even more optimistic about our country’s promise. And I look forward to working along your side, as a citizen, for all my days that remain. Thanks, everybody. Who Will Prepare Your Tax Return? WASHINGTON – As the start of tax filing season approaches, the Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers to start thinking about who will prepare their 2016 federal tax return. The IRS will begin processing tax returns on Monday, January 23. Many software companies and tax professionals will accept and submit tax returns before the IRS systems open on January 23. In 2016, more than 131 million individual and family tax returns were e-filed, the most accurate, safest and easiest way to file. The rest of the returns received by the IRS, numbering over 19 million, were either prepared on a computer and printed or prepared by hand then mailed. The IRS stresses that no matter who prepares it, by signing the return, the taxpayer becomes legally responsible for the accuracy of all information included. Free Tax Preparation Each year, millions of tax returns are prepared for free by taxpayers using IRS Free File or by volunteers at community organization sites nationwide. IRS Free File lets taxpayers who earned less than $64,000 prepare and e-file a return for free. Go to IRS.gov and click on the ‘Filing’ tab for options on using commercial tax software. Those who earned more than $64,000 are still eligible for Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms. This more basic Free File option is best for people who are comfortable preparing their own tax returns. IRS trained and certified volunteers at thousands of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (VITA and TCE) sites nationwide offer free tax preparation and e-filing. VITA offers free tax return preparation to taxpayers who earn $54,000 or less. The TCE program is mainly for people age 60 or older and focuses on tax issues unique to seniors. AARP participates in the TCE program and helps taxpayers with low to moderate incomes. • To find the closest VITA site, visit IRS.gov and search the word “VITA.” Or download the IRS2Go app on a smart phone. Site information is also available by calling the IRS at 800-906-9887. • To locate the nearest AARP Tax-
Aide site, visit aarp.org, or call 888227-7669. There are also VITA and TCE sites that provide bilingual help for taxpayers who have limited English skills. Many taxpayers pay for tax return preparation. By law, all paid tax preparers must have a Preparer Tax Identification Number, or PTIN. Paid preparers must sign the return and include their PTIN. The IRS offers tips to help taxpayers choose a tax return preparer wisely. The Choosing a Tax Professional page has information about tax preparer credentials and qualifications. The IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications can help identify many preparers in your locality by type of credential or qualification. The IRS urges taxpayers to avoid fly-by-night preparers who may not be available after this year’s April 18 due date or base fees on a percentage of the refund. The IRS also reminds taxpayers that a new law requires all refunds on returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) be held until Feb. 15. This change helps the IRS detect and prevent fraud. Renew your ITIN early to avoid delays in your refund Many Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) expired on January 1, and affected taxpayers must act quickly to avoid delays in their refunds and possible loss of some significant tax benefits until they renew the ITIN. An ITIN is used by anyone who has a tax filing or payment obligation under US law, but is not eligible for a social security number. Under a PATH change, any ITIN that has not been used on a tax return at least once in the past three years has expired. Also, expired any ITINs whose average digits are 78 or 79 (9NN-78-NNNN or 9NN79-NNNN). Processing an application for complete and accurate ITIN renewal can take up to 11 weeks. For this reason, the IRS is a person with an ITIN who needs to file a statement this tax season to submit their ITIN renewal application as soon as possible. ITIN renewal applicants can obtain help through IRS.gov/ ITIN, and consult a Certified Broker or Broker, or make an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).

Rockin’ the Cloud also featured a free concert on the corner of New York Avenue and 10th Street with nationally known Fuel, who were joined by local bands Wilted Chilis, Auditory Armory and Papa Wheelee. Festivities concluded with a countdown to midnight to welcome the New Year with the nowfamous “cloud drop”. It all happened in Downtown St. Cloud, where about 4000 people from near and far joined in for the fun and excitement during the six-hour event. “We did it!”, said City Manager Joe Helfenberger. “With an incredibly hard-
working staff, volunteers, vendors and sponsors, we were able to present a fantastic event for all to enjoy. Downtown St. Cloud Development Project St. Cloud, FL - The St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to support the Downtown Development Project, which encompasses the renovation of the historic Hunter Arms Hotel and the St. Cloud Hotel, as well as construction of the mixed-use building approved in an agreement by the St. Cloud City Council and ADMC International in October 2016. The St. Cloud Chamber is committed to supporting and creating community and business prosperity through education, advocacy, and wellplanned development. The makeover of the two hotels is the start of a renovation that could be the first of many in the downtown district. The buildings have been recognizable historic pieces of St Cloud’s rich past since the early 20th century. ADMC International plans to update electrical, plumbing, HVAC and add a moderndesigned black roof, setting the pace for revitalizing the downtown area while keeping its historic charm. The Orlando Magic have Struggled on the Tail End of their Road Trip After losing to the Lakers and Clippers at the beginning of their western road trip, the Magic were able to defeat the Trailblazers 115 to 109. Orlando had three more games out west before returning home but with their lack of defense and poor three-point shooting, the Magic lost all three games. Against the Jazz, Orlando had a five-point lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game. The Jazz could go on a 13-point run and take the win. Elfrid Payton did have one of the best nights of his career. Payton looked confident and drove to the basket. The point guard added 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. Payton had another impressive night against the Nuggets with 20 points and 12 assists. But the Magic suffered a 112 to 125 embarrassing loss. The last game of their road trip was in New Orleans. The Pelicans came out fast and very aggressive.

But Orlando has changed and replaced almost everyone, except the General Manager. This is a new team with new players and a new coach, their fourth coach in just three years, and yet we are seeing the same results. Hennigan might make some moves to keep his own job. The two astronauts successfully installed three new adapter plates and hooked up electrical connections for three of the six new lithium-ion batteries on the station. The new lithium-ion batteries and adapter plates replace the nickelhydrogen batteries currently used on the station to store electrical energy generated by the station’s solar arrays. These new batteries provide an improved power capacity for operations with a lighter mass and a smaller volume than the nickel-hydrogen batteries. Robotic work to update the batteries began in January. This was the second of two spacewalks to finalize the installation. Additional batteries will be replaced as part of this power upgrade over the next couple of years as new batteries are delivered to station.

From the most powerful telescope orbiting Mars comes a new view of Earth and its moon, showing continent-size detail on the planet and the relative size of the moon. The image combines two separate exposures taken on Nov. 20, 2016, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The images were taken to calibrate HiRISE data, since the reflectance of the moon's Earth-facing side is well known. For presentation, the exposures were processed separately to optimize detail visible on both Earth and the moon. The moon is much darker than Earth and would barely be visible if shown at the same brightness scale as Earth. The combined view retains the correct positions and sizes of the two bodies relative to each other. The distance between Earth and the moon is about 30 times the diameter of Earth. Earth and the moon appear closer than they actually are in this image because the observation was planned for a time at which the moon
was almost directly behind Earth, from Mars' point of view, to see the Earth-facing side of the moon. In the image, the reddish feature near the middle of the face of Earth is Australia. When the component images were taken, Mars was about 127 million miles (205 million kilometers) from Earth.
