Public & Private Sector Partnership helps solve Weinan Hotel incident

Kissimmee, FL - Shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8th, the City of Kissimmee Fire Department quickly responded to a fire at the Weinan Hotel, located at 4104 West Vine Street. After extinguishing the fire, crews identified minor damage to the building’s roof and electrical system, which left the hotel’s 190 registered guests suddenly without power.

Although the fire was contained within minutes, and no one was injured, it was clear the building would be without power until necessary repairs could be made. Hotel management took responsibility for their guest and provided food and water at a nearby restaurant. Osceola County Emergency Management arranged transportation to the restaurant via

Lynx, making the situation more bearable for hotel guests while repairs were made. The City’s commitment to issuing a permit and an inspection the same day for the Weinan Hotel was crucial due to the large number of families impacted by the incident. The partnership between the City, hotel management, Osceola County Emergency Management, American Red Cross, Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA), and Lynx, prevented guests from being displaced longterm. The building was reenergized by 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. For more information about the City of Kissimmee, visit www.kissimmee. org.

'Johnny' Méndez and Mayor of Kissimmee promote economic development projects San Juan, PR – On Wednesday, August 16, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Carlos 'Johnny' Méndez Núñez, held an extensive meeting with the mayor of the city of Kissimmee, José Álvarez, discussing the issues related to the admission of Puerto Rico and the implementation of economic development measures that would benefit residents of both jurisdictions. During the private meeting, which was also attended by former Florida House of Representatives Dean Cannon, the cameral leader emphasized the need for elected officials of the so-called Sunshine State to assist Puerto Rico in achieving equality with the other states of the union. For his part, Alvarez stressed that there are ways to bring both jurisdictions closer and that those ties could serve as a spearhead to achieve statehood. The First Executive of Kissimmee,

a city in Central Florida with over 70,000 inhabitants, nearly 30,000 of these Puerto Ricans, said that it is important to assist that community in the process of adapting to the new life. The two leaders discussed a wide range of initiatives aimed at fostering the economy of Puerto Rico and Florida, including reciprocity in professional work licenses, such as real estate brokers and refrigeration technicians, among many others. There was also talk of measures to improve trade in agricultural products. To conclude, the representative for San Juan's # 1 District, Eddie Charbonier Chinea, who actively participated in the entire discussion, presented Alvarez with a Motion for Recognition for being the first Hispanic to have reached the mayoralty of the second city of largest population in Central Florida, after Orlando.

Eclipse

Are you ready for the total solar eclipse? On August 21, 2017, the Earth will cross the shadow of the moon, creating a total solar eclipse. Eclipses happen about every six months, but this one is special. For the first time in almost 40 years, the path of the moon's shadow passes through the continental United States. This visualization shows the Earth, moon, and sun at 1:05:40 PM during the eclipse. The partial eclipse will be seen in Kissimmee beginning at 1:19 PM, its peak will be at 2:51 PM and will end at 4:15 PM with a total duration of 2 hours with 54 minutes. To find out at what time it will be visible at your location, go to NASA Total Solar Eclipes of 2017 Aug 21, or at: https://eclipse2017.nasa. gov/sites/default/files/interactive_map/ index.html, there you will find a map where you will simply click on the area of interest and a table will appear with details on the begining and end time of the eclipse.

In the animation from which this still was taken, the Earth, moon, sun, and shadow cones are viewed through a telescopic lens on a virtual camera located far behind the Earth. Long focal lengths like the one used here appear to compress the distance between near and far objects. Despite appearances, the geometry of the scene is correct. The moon's umbra cone is roughly 30 Earth diameters long, barely enough to reach the Earth, while the sun is almost 400 times farther away. The states where the total eclipse can be seen are: Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Fraud & Grand Theft Arrest Osceola county, FL - On March 16, 2017, a report was made with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office in reference to someone possibly possessing property in Osceola County through fraudulent means. Detectives from the Osceola Sheriff’s Economic Crimes Unit began to investigate and learned that Alan Lee Weierman D.O.B. 11/21/61, had been filing forged quit claim and warranty deeds with the Osceola County Clerk’s Office. The fraudulent deeds were for land parcels located in the Suburban Estates recreation area and Holopaw. Detectives were able to identify multiple victims, many of whom were deceased at the time when the fraudulent deeds were allegedly signed and sold to Weierman. Once Weierman obtained false ownership of the land, he would do improvements to the land and resell the land parcel to unsuspecting buyers. These buyers, victims to Weierman’s scheme, legally had no ownership of the property they thought they purchased, some paying as much as $5,900. Weierman was arrested on 8/10/17 and booked into the Osceola County Jail on 12 counts of Conspiracy to Utter a Forged Instrument, 20 counts of Criminal Use of Personal Identification, 4 counts of Grand Theft from Victims 65 years or older, 74 counts of Use of Public Records to Further the Commission of a Felony and Racketeering.
