Patrons of the Hart Memorial Library saw all this and more were on display during a “Grand ReOpening” Friday that tied in food trucks, family fun and special hours. “The library is definitely more inviting for anyone who loves to learn and read. There’s more room for people to work at the computers and we have optimized space with a very user-friendly approach,” said Commissioner Cheryl Grieb, whose district includes the library. “This

project insures that Hart Memorial is a showcase facility that provides essential services and resources to our residents. The update keeps the library relevant in people’s lives and continues the tradition for it to be a hub for numerous activities.” One of those signature events is the Summer Reading Club, which kicks off next week at branches in Buenaventura Lakes, Kissimmee, Poinciana, St. Cloud and Celebration next week. Osceola County News La Sociedad Histórica del Condado Osceola presenta corte de cinta de la réplica de una iglesia histórica de 1800 Kissimmee, FL - La Sociedad Histórica del Condado Osceola (OHSC por sus siglas en inglés) organizó la magnífica ceremonia de inauguración y el corte de la cinta de la 1800s Replica Historic Church que se encuentra en el corazón Pioneer Village en Shingle Creek (2491 Babb Rd. Kissimmee, FL 34746) el 7 de junio de 2017 en 10:00 AM. La 1800s Replica Historic Church se basa en la iglesia episcopal de San Pedro. La Iglesia de San Pedro fue consagrada en 1898 después de que el Teniente Coronel William Cadman tomó la iniciativa de recaudar fondos para construir la iglesia. Bodas, ceremonias de renovación de votos y bautizos son algunas de

OCHS presents 1800s Replica Historic Church Ribbon Cutting Kissimmee, FL - The Osceola County Historical Society hosted the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the 1800s Replica Historic Church featured in the heart of the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek (2491 Babb Rd. Kissimmee, FL 34746) on June 7, 2017 at 10AM. The 1800s Replica Historic Church is based on St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. St. Peter’s Church was consecrated in 1898 after Lt. Colonel William Cadman took the lead in raising funds to build the church. Weddings, vow renewal ceremonies and christenings are a few celebrations that can now take place at the 1800s Replica Historic Church! This unique

The Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek also features a pavilion available for rental. OCHS was awarded a $500,000 Cultural Facility Grant through the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affair, the Florida Council of Arts and Culture and the State of Florida to help fund the construction and furnishing of three 1800s replica buildings: Train Depot, School House and Church. The 1800s Replica Historic Church is the last building to complete the 2015-16 Cultural Facility Grant.

Osceola Schools - Noticias / News El Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola colabora con BRIDG en el programa de escuela superior para el Desarrollo de Fuerza Laboral fotónica. Además del programa Debido a que el Distrito Escolar de Osceola sirve como impulsor clave para el desarrollo económico diverso en el área central de Florida, la Junta Escolar de Osceola y la superintendente Dra. Debra Pace han ampliado en gran medida el programa de estudios STEM (Ciencias, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas) que se enseña en las escuelas para que esté alineado directamente con las necesidades actuales y futuras de la fuerza laboral. Osceola School District partners with BRIDG for SEMI High Tech University’s high school Workforce Development Program With the Osceola School District serving as a key driver for diverse economic development in the Central Florida region, the Osceola County School Board and Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace have greatly expanded the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum being taught in schools so that it directly aligns with workforce needs now and in the future. The district’s newest STEM initiative is SEMI High Tech University (SEMI HTU), making Osceola the first school district in Florida to partner with the SEMI Foundation for their internationally-acclaimed high-tech career exploration program for high school students to take place June 13-15, 2017. Participating students will have the unique opportunity to visit BRIDG, a SEMI High Tech University host and sponsor, for hands-on workshops facilitated by BRIDG technology staff and industry partners to learn about various pathways from school to advanced manufacturing and technology careers, in such areas as advanced sensors, optics, and photonics. In addition to the student program, a teacher program will take place on June 7-8 to connect

the classroom experience to careers in technology for educators. These students and teachers will investigate how high-tech STEM solutions are used to solve real-world problems, to enhance student’s perceptions about STEM, and to generate excitement for world-class, high-tech jobs in the local area. This program will be available to qualified students and teachers at no cost to them and serve as the pilot program for the Central Florida region. The Osceola County SEMI HTU Program is funded by the Florida High Tech Corridor Council and the Osceola County Education Foundation. School District offices to be closed on Fridays during summer As the Osceola School District continues to look at ways to save money, the district will save on utility costs and operational costs by implementing a four-day work week during the summer months. Beginning on June 5, 2017, and ending on July 20, 2017, the school district's administrative offices and school front offices will be open to the public Mondays through Thursdays during the following hours: --Mondays - Wednesdays 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

--Thursdays -- 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Some district facilities may be open on Fridays for teacher trainings, school-based events,

or maintenance work. For the week of July 3, 2017, regular work hours on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. will be followed for all departments and schools. School District offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4. The first day of school for students for the 2017-2018 school year will be on Thursday, August 10, 2017. Orlando native protects U.S. Navy Forces in the Middle East Naval Support Activity Bahrain – A 2008 University High School graduate and Orlando, Florida native is a part of Naval Forces Central Command keeping watch over one of the world’s most volatile regions at Naval Support Activity, Bahrain. Petty Officer 2nd Class William Aponte is a logistics specialist at the Manama, Bahrain Navy base, forward-deployed to the Arabian Gulf in the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. The Navy’s 5th Fleet’s area of operation encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The expanse comprises 20 countries, including three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Bab al Mandeb at the southern tip of Yemen. “There’s a new challenge almost every day. I like that. There’s never a dull moment,” said Aponte. Aponte is receiving firsthand experience working in a foreign country and being part of a team vital to our nation’s defense, keeping the world’s waterways open and safe from hostile forces.

“This is my first deployment to Bahrain. The culture and religion are different, but I now have a broader view of Islam by being here, instead of just what’s on television,” said Aponte. “I want to grow and learn wherever I go.” The U.S. Naval Forces Central Command’s mission is to conduct maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts, and strengthen partner nations' maritime capabilities to promote security and stability in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. Aponte realizes the significance of serving his country abroad and is very proud of the work he is doing as part of Naval Forces Central Command, Bahrain. “The travel. Salud / Health Primer grupo de residentes graduado de UCF del programa de Medicina Interna Orlando, FL - El primer programa de residencia de medicina interna de UCF graduó a sus primeros médicos el 8 de junio, honrando a los pioneros que están ayudando a inspirar nuevos programas de educación médica graduada en todo el estado. La primera residencia del Colegio de Medicina comenzó en 2014 en asociación con el Osceola Regional Medical Center de la División Norte de la Florida de HCA y el Centro Médico de Orlando VA. Ese programa condujo a un consorcio de la escuela de medicina de UCF - HCA que espera agregar 600 puestos más de empleo para médicos residente al estado antes de 2020. En los últimos dos años solamente, el consorcio ha agregado 14 programas de residencia y una beca en Orlando, Ocala y Gainesville y tendrá alrededor de 250 médicos en formación este verano. Se planean varios nuevos programas adicionales. Los programas de residencia tienen un impacto directo en el número de médicos de una comunidad y el acceso de los residentes a la atención médica. Eso es porque con el fin de la práctica, los graduados de la escuela de medicina deben completar la formación de residencia en una especialidad específica de tres a siete años. El número de programas de médicos residentes no ha mantenido el ritmo con su crecimiento de la población y el aumento del número de escuelas de medicina creando una escasez de médicos en muchas áreas, incluyendo Florida. Un número cada vez mayor de programas de residencia puede ayudar a aliviar la escasez de médicos debido a que la mayoría de los residentes establecen prácticas donde entrenan. Eso es cierto para los graduados de medicina interna de UCF-HCA de este año. De los 16, nueve se quedan en la Florida Central. Dos practicarán en Gainesville. Tres van a continuar estudios en especialidades como hematología/oncología y medicina del sueño. Tres están saliendo del estado para practicar. "Los programas de residencia son parte de la promesa que hicimos a esta comunidad", dijo la Dra. Deborah German, vicepresidenta de asuntos médicos de UCF y decana fundadora de la Facultad de Medicina. "Si tenemos más residentes, tendremos más médicos capacitados en nuestra comunidad. Nos convertiremos en un importador neto de talento médico”. Muchos de los graduados se están convirtiendo en médicos de medicina interna que se especializan en el cuidado de pacientes hospitalizados y no dan servicios fuera del hospital. En el pasado, un médico del paciente hacía rondas en el hospital local para visitar a sus pacientes. Esa práctica comenzó a cambiar hace unos 10 años para proporcionar una atención hospitalaria más conveniente, eficiente y coordinada. Los “Hospitalists” (médicos de medicina interna que se especializan en el cuidado de pacientes hospitalizados) supervisan el cuidado de los pacientes con enfermedades agudas

o complicaciones de enfermedades crónicas como la diabetes y enfermedades del corazón. First residents graduate from UCF Partnership Internal Medicine Program UCF’s first partnership internal medicine residency program will graduated its first physicians June 8, honoring the pioneers who are helping inspire new graduate medical education programs across the state. The College of Medicine’s first residency began in 2014 in partnership with HCA’s North Florida Division’s Osceola Regional Medical Center and the Orlando VA Medical Center. That program led to a UCF College of Medicine-HCA consortium that is expected to add 600+ new residency slots to the state by 2020. In the past two years alone, the consortium has added 14 residency programs and one fellowship in Orlando, Ocala and Gainesville and will have about 250 physicians in training this summer. Multiple additional new programs are planned. Residency programs have a direct impact on a community’s number of doctors and residents’ access to healthcare. That’s because in order to practice, medical school graduates must complete residency training in a specific specialty for three to seven years. Florida’s number of residency programs has not kept pace with its population growth and increasing number of medical schools creating a physician shortage in many areas including Florida. Increasing numbers of residency programs can help ease the physician shortage because most residents set up practices where they train. That’s true for this year’s UCF-HCA internal medicine graduates. Of the 16, nine are staying in Central Florida. Two will practice in Gainesville. Three are going onto fellowships in specialties such as hematology/ oncology and sleep medicine. Three are going out of state to practice. “Residency programs are part of the promise we made to this community,” said Dr. Deborah German, UCF vice president for medical affairs and founding dean of the College of Medicine. “If we have more residencies, we’ll have more trained doctors in our community. We’ll become a net importer of medical talent.” Many of the graduating residents are becoming hospitalists – internal medicine physicians who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients. In the past, a patient’s physician made rounds at the local hospital to visit his or her patients. That practice started changing about 10 years ago to provide more convenient, efficient and coordinated inpatient care. Hospitalists supervise the care of patients with acute illnesses or complications from chronic conditions

like diabetes and heart disease. They coordinate care between specialists and because they work in a hospital setting, they order and receive test results quickly to make a diagnosis. Their goal: Diagnose how a serious illness or complication happened and stabilize the patient for life outside the hospital. The career as a hospitalist generally pays more than an outpatient practice and offers a set schedule, which some physicians seek for work-life balance. Several of the UCF graduating residents said they were drawn to hospitalist work because its fast pace gives them the opportunity to treat and learn from diverse patients and health conditions. “Care in the clinic is usually stable. The hospital environment is more challenging,” said Dr. Leslie Soto, a graduating resident who is joining a hospitalist practice in Gainesville. “Being a hospitalist gives you to the opportunity to make an impact on a patient’s life at a critical moment.” The UCF-HCA residencies are located at Osceola Regional, North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville and Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala. They are in a variety of programs -- internal, family and emergency medicine, surgery, neurology, OBGYN, psychiatry and a transitional year residency for physicians planning to enter specialties such as dermatology and anesthesiology. The new fellowship program -- in endocrinology -- is located at Osceola Regional. More UCF-HCA residencies and fellowships are planned and the two entities have also partnered to build a joint venture communitybased teaching hospital next to the medical school in Lake Nona. Florida currently ranks 41 of the 50 states in residents per 100,000 residents. The lack of training programs exacerbates Florida and the nation’s physician shortage. With America’s growing and aging population, a study conducted for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) predicts the U.S. will have a shortage of 40,800 to 104,900 physicians by the year 2030. Valencia College La educación transforma la vida de una estudiante "no tradicional" Por Jimmy Sherfey Hace poco nos enteramos de la historia de Angela Murphy de Valencia en la Seneff Honors College Evening of Distinction. En 2012 Murphy se encontró en un callejón sin salida - en términos de carrera - habiendo trabajado como oficinista durante décadas. Education transforms life of ‘Non-Traditional’ student never done at Valencia is turn down By Jimmy Sherfey We recently learned of Angela Murphy’s Valencia story at the Seneff Honors College Evening of Distinction. In 2012 – in terms of career – Murphy found herself at a dead-end, having worked as an office clerk for decades. Now, with both an A.A and A.S. degree from Valencia College, she is a successful Cath Lab technician, a profession which boasts an aboveaverage growth potential and a median salary of $54,880, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But those are just the facts. We thought we’d leave the storytelling to Angela, since she says it best: it’s never too late to live your dream. My name is Angela and this is my story of how Valencia and the Seneff Honor’s College made it possible for me to live my dream. I am a non-traditional student. In fact, I am way beyond that. I am 56 years old now. I never had the opportunity to have a college degree, because my family was very poor, and as time went by, I raised my own family. I started a career at 20 years old, however, working in a dental office, over the years working my way into every position you can be in a medical office. My specialty was medical billing, collections, and appeals. I was working in a medical office with 30 years of experience, and getting paid $11/hour. I wasn’t happy doing the job anymore. I wanted to help people, but I was still not clinical. That is what I always wanted. I quit my job and started investigating how to become a student. I looked at a lot of various kinds of schools, but Valencia had everything I wanted. I enrolled and was accepted, starting classes in the summer of 2012. I was 51 years old and terrified. Then at the end of the summer term I was asked to attend a meeting. Now, one thing I have

any opportunity. So, I went. I found out about the Seneff Honor’s College and scholarships that were available to me. I took the opportunity and applied. I was accepted and started in the fall. I completed my required 24 credits at the Seneff Honor’s College, while working on my pre-requisites for the Cardiovascular Technology program. Along the way I went to England, on a Study Abroad trip. I went to Washington, DC on a study trip. My research won an award at Florida Honor’s Council, and I was asked to attend and present that research. I was referred, by my professor, to be Editor of the Phoenix magazine. During my tenure as Editor-In-Chief, the magazine won top prizes in the state, one of which was first place in Editing. I wrote a nonfiction story, “Glimpse of Strength,” about my grandmother giving birth to my Father in Arkansas. It won first place in the state. I won student of the month, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. In the summer of 2014, I was accepted into the Cardiovascular Program, and the time just flew by. I took each semester as it came. I gave up my income for my family, but my son told me not to worry. He said that I would make it all back my first year out of school, and he was right! I worked harder than I have ever worked in my entire life, and as of today, I have completed my A.S. in Cardiovascular Technology with honors and my A.A. in General Studies with honors. Kissimmee, FL- On June 2, 2017, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a report of a possible child abuse incident concerning a four-month-old infant. The infant was being treated at a hospital from what appeared to be non-accidental facial bruising and leg fractures. Detectives responded and their investigation led to the arrest of the infant’s biological mother and father; Ashley Ann Montrony D.O.B. 11/23/86 and David Alan Rich D.O.B. 8/30/84. Rich and Montrony cooperated with detectives, Rich admitting to battering the infant because the baby was crying. Rich was charged with Aggravated Child Abuse.

Montrony was charged with two counts of Child Neglect with Great Bodily Harm for failing to provide care and failing to keep her baby safe after having knowledge of the abuse. Rich and Montrony were booked into the Osceola County Jail and the victim is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is committed to preventing and protecting our most precious resources, the children of our community. Orlando City vs Chicago Fire termina 0-0 Por Sophia Hernández Orlando, FL - El 4 de junio, Orlando City (OC) celebró el partido con una puntuación de 0-0 contra el Chicago Fire. This gave them more of a motive to attack and defend their team even if it meant not scoring.

This was Chicago Fire’s chance for a fifth winning streak but OC turned that chance around. A game such as this one was for OC to lose since two men were given red cards but they pulled through and as a whole they demonstrated excellent teamwork. If OC played just as well as they did or even better at every match there is no doubt that they would be in the lead.

El Viejito Saludable / The Healthy Geezer Shoulder injuries By Fred Cicetti Q. You can settle a bet for me. Who gets shoulder problems more often, athletes or seniors? Athletes such as pitchers, tennis players and swimmers are especially susceptible to shoulder problems because of their repetitive overhead motions. However, shoulder problems are most likely to victimize people older than 60. You can deduce that, as a group, old athletes are at the highest risk of shoulder injury. [Shoulder problems are so common among seniors that I am doing a twoparter on the subject. This is the first column.] Let’s start with some anatomy. The shoulder is the body’s most movable joint. It is also unstable because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the shoulder socket that holds it. In contrast to the hip joint, a conventional ball-and-socket, the shoulder joint is like a tee with a golf ball on it. The unstable shoulder is held in place by soft tissue: muscles, tendons and ligaments. Tendons are cords that hold the shoulder muscles to bones. Ligaments hold the three shoulder bones to each other. The three shoulder bones are the collarbone (clavicle), the shoulder blade (scapula) and the upper arm bone (humerus). Many shoulder injuries are caused by tissue breakdown. Common shoulder problems include dislocation, separation, torn rotator-cuff, frozen shoulder, fracture, arthritis, tendinitis and bursitis. The rotator cuff is defined as the set of muscles and tendons that secures the arm to the shoulder joint and permits the arm to rotate. More than 7 million Americans go to a doctor with a shoulder problem each year. More than 4 million of these visits are for rotator-cuff injuries. *Dislocation. Dislocation occurs when the ball at the top of the bone in the upper arm pops out of the socket. To treat a dislocation, a doctor pushes the ball back into the socket. Once a shoulder is dislocated, it may happen again. *Separation. A shoulder separation occurs when the ligaments between the collarbone and the shoulder blade are torn. *Torn rotator cuff. Age-related wear of tendons can lead to a tear. Repeated overhead motion can also damage the rotator cuff. *Frozen shoulder. Movement is very restricted in people with a frozen shoulder. Causes of frozen shoulder are: lack of use because of pain, rheumatic disease, bands of tissue that grow in the joint, and insufficient lubricating fluid in the joint. * Fracture. In the shoulder, a fracture or crack usually involves the collarbone or upper arm bone. * Arthritis. The shoulder can be affected by osteoarthritis, a disease caused by wear and tear, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease. * Tendinitis. In tendinitis of the shoulder, tendons become inflamed from being pinched by parts around the shoulder. * Bursitis. The bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that helps protect the shoulder joint. If the bursa becomes inflamed, you suffer from bursitis.

Los tres huesos del hombro son la clavícula, el omóplato (escápula) y el hueso de brazo superior (húmero).

Muchas lesiones de hombro son causadas por la descomposición del tejido. Problemas comunes en el hombro incluyen dislocación, separación del rotador, espasmo, fractura, artritis, tendinitis y bursitis. El manguito rotador se define como el conjunto de músculos y tendones que asegura el brazo en la articulación del hombro y permite que el brazo gire. Más de 7 millones de estadounidenses van a un médico con problemas en el hombro cada año. Más de 4 millones de estas visitas son por lesiones del manguito rotador. * Dislocación. La dislocación ocurre cuando la bola en la parte superior del hueso en la parte superior del brazo se sale de la toma. Para tratar una dislocación, un médico empuja la bola hacia atrás en el hueco. Una vez que un hombro sufre una dislocación, puede suceder otra vez.

*Separación. Una separación del hombro se produce cuando se rompen los ligamentos entre la clavícula y el omóplato. * Rotador. Relacionada con la edad el desgaste de tendones puede conducir a una lágrima. Movimiento cabeza repetida también puede dañar el manguito de los rotadores. * Espasmo. Es cuando el movimiento es muy reducido en las personas. Causas del espasmo en el hombro son: falta de uso debido a dolor, enfermedades reumáticas, bandas de tejido que crecen en el líquido lubricante común e insuficiente de la articulación. * Fractura. En el hombro, una fractura o rajadura implica generalmente el hueso de brazo clavícula o superior. * Artritis. El hombro puede ser afectado por la osteoartritis, una enfermedad causada por el desgaste y la artritis reumatoide, una enfermedad autoinmune. * Tendinitis. En la tendinitis del hombro, los tendones se inflaman alrededor del hombro. * Bursitis. La bursa es un saco pequeño lleno de líquido que ayuda a proteger la articulación del hombro. Si la bursa se inflama, padece de bursitis.

The show was not only attended by the Puerto Rican community from various parts of Florida, but also with representatives from several Hispanic countries. Attendees enjoyed a comedy where there was lots of entertainment, laughter and singing from beginning to end.
