Yerianne Roldan and Zuleyka Avila were seniors at Ramey School and University Gardens High School, respectively, in Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria hit in late September. Yerianne and her family relocated to Orlando for her mother’s job, and Zuleyka fled the island to live with her grandfather and siblings in Orlando. Both girls, 17 years old, enrolled at Colonial High School to finish their senior years and left behind plans they already had in place to attend college in Puerto Rico. Neither of them know at this point if they can or will return to the island. In an effort to help the students still pursue a higher education, Linda Neal, dean of communication from Valencia College’s East Campus, and Adrienne Frame, associate vice president and dean of students at UCF, joined Jesus Jara, deputy superintendent of Orange County Public Schools, and Jose Martinez, Colonial High School principal, to surprise the girls and their families with commitments to help them financially should they choose to attend Valencia and then transfer to UCF through DirectConnect to UCF to complete their bachelor’s degrees. The surprise happened at Colonial’s Media Center and left both the girls and their families in tears. “I’m just so happy to now have some help,” Zuleyka said. Her mother is in Puerto Rico trying to sell whatever she can before permanently relocating to Orlando. “Family is still in Puerto Rico and communication is really hard. They try to seem happy and ask me how things are going here. I’m so lucky for the situation I’m in. I wish everyone had the same,” Yerianne said. Jara praised the girls for their rigorous class schedules at Colonial, as both are enrolled in numerous Advanced Placement courses. Yerianne aspires to study graphic design or advertising, and Zuleyka aspires to be a pediatrician. Martinez also applauded the strong partnership between the school district, Valencia and UCF have helped impact the lives of these students for the better. Valencia is offering in-state tuition, as well as reduced rates on short-term English and job training courses, to Puerto Rican students impacted by Hurricane Maria. UCF is also offering in-state tuition to Puerto Rican students impacted by the hurricane. FEMA - Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria Update San Juan, Puerto Rico – One and a half months after Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico nearing category 5 strength, the government of Puerto Rico, FEMA and its federal partners have been making progress in one of the nation’s most logistically complex responses in history. One strong recovery effort was the restoration on communications. Only 82 cell phone towers were operational after the storm, providing cell phone service to 5 percent of the population. A month and a half later, Puerto Rico has 1,261 working cell phone towers, bringing cell phone service to 92.5 percent of Puerto Rico residents.

Out of 68 hospitals, 55 of those are back on the power grid. This is a marked improvement from October 3, when only 9 hospitals had power restored on the grid.

Transportation to and from Puerto Rico has significantly improved. Every airport and port suffered damage and were closed after Maria. Now, all sea ports have re-opened and are accepting commercial delivery and all airports are open with more than 200 commercial flights a day.

Power restoration continues to make steady progress throughout Puerto Rico. Directly after the storm, the entire island was without power. Today, power has been restored to more than 41 percent of the island. On October 1, only 10 generators had been installed. Now, there are 423 generators installed across Puerto Rico by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Safe, potable drinking water has returned to 83 percent of Puerto Rico. On September 27, only 44%

of Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) customers had running water. Private sector recovery is a huge step to improving community stability and sustainability. More than 89 percent of grocery stores are now open, up from the 49 percent open a week and a half after Hurricane Maria hit. On October 1, 70 percent of gas stations were open. Today, more than 84 percent of gas stations are providing fuel to residents of Puerto Rico. There are now 1,160 active ATMs, which allow residents of Puerto Rico direct access to cash, compared to the 114 active ATMs on September 21. All post offices were closed in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Today, all 122 post offices are operational. 13 Disaster Recovery Centers are open with more opening every day. These DRCs are currently located in Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barranquitas, Camuy, Carolina, Cayey, Guayama, Guaynabo, Humacao, Mayaguez, Ponce, Rio Grande and Toa Baja to survivors by providing information and assisting them to register for assistance. The first wave of local hires completed their swearing this week to help with the long recovery. In total, FEMA extended offers to 2,000 Puerto Rico residents to assist in recovery efforts on the Island. They join the more than 17,000 federal employees representing 35 federal agencies who have assisted in one of the largest disaster responses in U.S. history. The response for Hurricane Maria is historic and continues to be.

Understanding FEMA Verified Loss Orlando, FL – You may be eligible for FEMA help to restore your home to a safe, sanitary and functional condition following a disaster, if you don’t have insurance coverage – or if you have received an insurance settlement that is less than the cost to make your home habitable. FEMA assistance is not the same as insurance. Assistance only provides the basic needs for a home to be habitable. Once you register for assistance, FEMA is required to verify losses to determine your eligibility for disaster assistance. FEMA’s standard method to verify a loss due to disaster damage and to determine initial eligibility is an onsite inspection by a FEMA inspector. Home damage must be disasterrelated. Safe, sanitary and functional homes meet the following conditions: The exterior is structurally sound, including the doors, roof and windows.

The interior’s habitable areas are structurally sound, including the ceiling and floors. The electricity, gas, heat, plumbing, and septic systems function properly. The home is capable of operating for its intended purpose. Safe, Sanitary and Functional Examples Appliances: FEMA may assist in the replacement or repairs to disasterdamaged furnaces and hot water heaters. Ceiling and roof damage: FEMA may assist to repair disaster-related leaks in a roof that damage ceilings and threaten electrical components, like overhead lights, but not stains from roof leaks. Floors: FEMA may assist to repair disaster-damaged flooring in occupied parts of the home. Windows: FEMA may assist with disaster-related broken windows. FEMA verified loss determination may vary depending upon an individual’s situation. Expenses for repairs that exceed the

conditions to make a home safe, sanitary and functional are ineligible. In some cases, FEMA needs documentation from applicants such as receipts, bills, or estimates to verify losses. Flood insurance coverage is more extensive. Policyholders may receive up to $250,000 for home damage and $100,000 for contents depending on the type and amount of coverage they bought. National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) payments are not dependent on state or federal disaster declarations. If your private insurance settlement is less than FEMA’s verified loss calculation to make your home habitable, you may qualify for funds to supplement your insurance settlement, but only for repairs relating to the home’s habitability. FEMA does not provide replacement value amounts or assistance with non-essential items.

While being subbed off he took his time to hug each single one of his teammates, for those were his last minutes sharing the field with them. Video tributes were shown before, during and after the match to demonstrate all of his time there as a Lion. Joe Campo former capo leader who led the Wall in chants was honored with a moment of silence for his passing and an immense amount of cheering especially when Hadji Barry scored in the 69th minute (that was the number for his custom made Deadpool jersey.)
