City Of Kissimmee - Hispanic Heritage Month Ciudad de Kissimmee celebra el Mes de la Herencia Hispana Kissimmee, FL - La Ciudad de Kissimmee celebró el Mes de la Herencia Hispana con una recepción que ofreció arte y entretenimiento en vivo el martes, 4 de octubre. La recepción tuvo lugar en el vestíbulo de la Alcaldía antes de la reunión de la Comisión de la ciudad. Una proclama fue presentada durante la reunión de la Comisión.

Tres artistas hispanos tendrán sus obras expuestas en la Alcaldía hasta el 28 de octubre, junto con las banderas de los siguientes países: Puerto Rico, México, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y República Dominicana. La exhibición en el vestíbulo del primer piso es del artista cubano Pablo J. Hernández, un artista autodidacta nacido en La Habana, Cuba, en el 1961, que ha estado pintando desde hace más de 25 años. También se exhiben las obras de Luis Manuel Soto López, nacido en Camuy, Puerto Rico en el 1964, quien utiliza materiales reciclados y de cartón en sus obras. El lobby del primer piso también contará con las pinturas de Mariela Barahona, sobreviviente del tiroteo masivo en el club nocturno Pulse el 12 de junio de 2016. La animación estuvo a cargo de Tito Galarza como maestro de ceremonias. Los artistas incluyeron cantantes y bailarines de flamenco.
City of Kissimmee Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Kissimmee, FL – The City of Kissimmee celebrated the Hispanic Heritage Month with a reception featuring art and live entertainment on Tuesday, October 4. The reception took place in the lobby of the City Hall before the City Commission meeting. A proclamation was presented during the Commission meeting. Three Hispanic artists will have their works displayed at City Hall through October 28, 2016, along with flags from the following countries: Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Exhibiting on the first floor lobby is Cuban artist Pablo J. Hernandez, a self-taught artist who was born in Havana, Cuba in 1961, and has been painting for more than 25 years. Also on display are the works Luis Manuel Soto Lopez, born in Camuy, Puerto Rico in 1964, who uses recycled materials and cardboard in his works. The first floor lobby will also feature the paintings of Mariela Barahona, a survivor of the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting on June 12, 2016. The live entertainment featured Tito Galarza as Master of Ceremonies. Performers included singers and Flamenco dancers.

Osceola County - Scholarships Estudiantes del Condado de Osceola Reciben Becas de octubre. En 1988, el Condado Osceola, FL – Quince estudiantes del Condado Osceola fueron reconocidos la noche del jueves, 29 de septiembre, con becas como parte la Celebración de la Herencia Hispana en el Condado Osceola celebrada en la sede de Osceola Heritage Park. “Este evento es muy emocionante porque este año reconocemos otra vez estudiantes sobresalientes y gracias a nuestra asociación con la Fundación de Educación del Condado Osceola pudimos entregar $15,000 en becas lo que les ayudará a perseguir sus metas académicas y profesionales”, dijo la Presidenta de la Comisión Viviana Janer. “Como alguien que cree que la educación es vital para el éxito de una persona, es muy importante para mí que estemos apoyando a los estudiantes que representan el futuro de nuestra comunidad.” El evento se llevó a cabo en conjunto con la Fundación de Educación del Condado Osceola – el cual incluyó danza y música cultural. Osceola County Students Receive Scholarships Osceola County, FL – Fifteen Osceola County students were recognized with scholarships on Thursday, September 29, as part of Osceola County’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration held at Osceola Heritage Park. “This event is exciting because again this year we recognized some outstanding students and, thanks to our partnership with the Education Foundation of Osceola County, were able to award $15,000 in scholarships that will help them pursue their academic and professional goals,” said Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “As someone who believes education is vital to a person’s success, it is really important to me that we are supporting students who represent our community’s future.” The event was held in conjunction with the Education Foundation of Osceola County – and included cultural music and dance. Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 through October 15. In 1988,
President Ronald Reagan expanded what was originally a week-long celebration started by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor and celebrate the rich cultural contributions and traditions of the Hispanic-American community. “Hispanic Americans are part of the fabric of our country. It’s appropriate to acknowledge those who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society,” said Commissioner Brandon Arrington. “Providing scholarships to the next generation of potential leaders ensures that those contributions can blossom right here at home.” Today, the Hispanic or Latino population in the U.S. is estimated at 50.5 million people. According to the U.S. Census, the country's Hispanic population grew by 43 percent from 2000 to 2010, making it the largest and the fastest growing minority group in the country.

Business Night Kissimmee, FL- On Thursday, September 29, the Latino Referral Group of the Hispanic Business Council (HBC) of the Kissimmee/Osceola Chamber of Commerce had their Business Night at Soneros Latin Grill in Hunter’s Creek. Over a hundred people, members of the business community from the area attended the event exchanging ideas, services, and business opportunities with other attendees. Also, during the event they enjoyed music, food and raffle giveaways. Sobre 70 envejecientes disfrutaron de la gran fiesta
Condado Osceola, FL - El Osceola Council on Aging está celebrando 24 años del "primer" sitio de Comedor Hispano CLEO (Centro Latino Americano Edad de Oro). Se abrieron las puertas y se continuó la fiesta por 24 años más el viernes 30 de septiembre. Beverly Hougland, presidente del Osceola Council on Aging tuvo la visión de querer hacer esto, por lo que la comunidad hispana tendría su propio sitio de comedor. "Esto fue muy importante para nuestros clientes hispanos que tienen su propio sitio de comedor que está dentro de su comunidad y en el que se sienten como si estuvieran en su casa", dijo Hougland. El primer sitio comedor hispano se creó a través de una subvención escrita hace más de 24 años de $25,000 que ayudó a que el Osceola Council on Aging comenzara este sitio comedor. ¡Además, un restaurante de la comunidad BVL asistió con la comida hace más de 24 años! El personal del Council on Aging comenzó a tocar puertas en el área de BVL y descubrió que la necesidad de la comunidad era socializar, tener un lugar para compartir historias y disfrutar de una buena comida, así fue como empezó todo. Además, tenían unos cuantos voluntarios de AmeriCorps ayudando al Osceola Council on Aging a comenzar la iniciativa, la mayoría de ellos retirados de la zona de Nueva York y recientemente trasladados aquí a Kissimmee. El Osceola Council on Aging sirve miles de comida y un buen rato en sus sitios para comer y a través de su programa Meals on Wheels.
CLEO celebrates 24 years Osceola County, FL - The Osceola Council on Aging is celebrating 24 years of the “first” Hispanic Dining Site CLEO (Centro Latino Americano Edad de Oro). They opened the doors and continue the party for 24 more years on Friday, September 30th. Beverly Hougland, president of the Osceola Council on Aging had a vision of wanting to do this, so the Hispanic Community would have their own dining site. “This was very important for our Hispanic Clients to have their own dining site that was within their community and where they would feel like they were at home,” said Hougland. How the first Hispanic Dining Site was created was thru a grant written over 24 years ago for $25,000 that helped the Osceola Council on Aging start this Dining Site. Plus a restaurant in the BVL community assisted with the food over 24 years ago! The Council on Aging staff started knocking on doors in the BVL area and found out that the community’s need was socializing, a place to share stories and enjoy a good meal, so this is how it all started. In addition, they had a few AmeriCorps volunteers help the Council on Aging get things started and most of them were retiring from the New York area and just recently moved here to Kissimmee. The Osceola Council on Aging serves thousands a meal and a good time at their dining sites and thru their Meals on Wheels program.

Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Metro Orlando escogida como Cámara del Año Orlando, FL - La Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Metro Orlando (HCCMO, por sus siglas en inglés) recibió tres premios en la Conferencia Anual 2016 de la Asociación de Cámaras Profesionales de la Florida Central (FACP, siglas en inglés). La Cámara fue reconocida por sus relaciones públicas, programas de comunicación y fue escogida como la Cámara del año. Este es el segundo año consecutivo en el HCCMO ha sido reconocida por sus canales audio visuales y de comunicación. Su campaña de promoción, #CFLWillBeHeard, ha sido un catalizador para animar a la gente a registrarse y votar. En la actualidad, la HCCMO es la única Cámara Hispana en el estado que ha sido certificada por la Asociación de Cámaras Profesionales de la Florida.
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando named Chamber of the Year Orlando, FL — The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando (HCCMO) received three awards at the Florida Association of Chamber Professional’s (FACP) 2016 Annual Conference. The Chamber was recognized for its Public Relations, Communications Programs, and Chamber of the Year award. This is the second year in a row the HCCMO has been recognized for their audio visual and communication channels. Their advocacy campaign, #CFLWillBeHeard, has been a catalyst to encourage people to register and vote. Currently, the HCCMO is the only Hispanic Chamber in the state that has been certified by the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals.

Sheriff & Police - Noticias / News Arrestado por Conducir de Manera Violenta y Asalto Agravado Condado Osceola - Agentes de la oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola respondieron a una residencia en Blackberry Circle en St Cloud. A su llegada, hablaron con la víctima, un conductor de Uber, quien indicó que viajaba en dirección este por Lakeshore Drive desde Fortune Road cuando un Honda plateado se le acercó. Éste reconoció el vehículo como uno que había estado conduciendo erráticamente detrás de él, pasando vehículos. La víctima fue detenido por un semáforo en rojo. Cuando la luz cambio a verde vio el vehículo junto a él y pensó que iba a virar, pero cuando miró, vio que el conductor le estaba apuntando con un arma de fuego negra. La víctima bajó la velocidad para permitir que el conductor del Honda plateado pasara frente a él. Entonces pudo obtener un número parcial de matrícula. Basado en información de la víctima, los agentes localizaron al conductor del Honda plateado y lo identificaron como

Arrested for Road Rage and 3 Counts of Aggravated Assault down to let the driver of the silver Honda Osceola County – Osceola County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence on Blackberry Circle in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, they spoke with the victim, an Uber driver, who indicated he was traveling eastbound on Lakeshore Drive from Fortune Road when a silver Honda approached him. He recognized the vehicle as one that had been driving erratically behind him, passing vehicles. The victim was stopped at a red traffic signal. When the light turned green he saw the vehicle next to him and thought the car was turning, but when he looked over, he saw the driver was pointing a black handgun at him. The victim slowed
get in front of him. He was able to obtain a partial license plate number. Based on the victim's information, deputies located the driver of the silver Honda and identified him as Obed Herrera and was taken into custody. He refused to cooperate with the investigation, but deputies located several handguns at his residence. The victim and additional occupants with the victim were able to positively identify Herrera as the driver. Based on the evidence and statements, Herrera was arrested and charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Use/Display of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. He was booked into the Osceola County Jail.

UCF - Hispanic Heritage Month Herencia cubana sirve para inspirar a pelear por los derechos de la mujer Orlando, FL – La profesora MC Santana, Directora de Estudios de la Mujer y Género, fue forzada a salir de Cuba cuando solo tenía un año de edad. Era el año 1965, seis años después de la revolución cubana. Fidel Castro había subido al poder y una ola de cubanos desilusionados inundo los estados Unidos después de que el gobierno ofreció asilo a cualquiera que deseara huir. Sus padres, temerosos por el futuro de su hija abordaron un vuelo de Pan Am lleno de refugiados – El Vuelo a la Libertad – a Miami. De allí su familia se mudó a Puerto Rico, donde Santana asistió a la universidad y más tarde trabajó como reportera de negocios y fue periodista muchos años. Desde que llegó a UCF en 1995 como instructora de periodismo en el Nicholson School of Communication, Santana ha enfocado su energía e investigación en empoderar mujeres a través del globo. A pesar de la enseñanza durante casi dos décadas, Santana sólo se dio cuenta de su pasión por la pedagogía después de una temporada como ayudante de enseñanza durante su programa de maestría en radio y televisión en la Universidad Temple. A Cuban Heritage Serves to Inspire Fight for Women’s Rights Orlando, FL -- Professor MC Santana, UCF’s director of Women and Gender Studies, was spirited away from Cuba when she was only one-year-old. It was 1965, six years after the Cuban Revolution. Fidel Castro had risen to power, and a wave of disillusioned Cuban immigrants flooded the United States after the government offered asylum to anyone willing to flee. Her parents, fearing for their daughter’s future, boarded one of Pan Am’s refugee airlifts — the Freedom Flights — to Miami. From there, the family moved to Puerto Rico, where Santana would attend college and later work as a business reporter and photojournalist for many years. Since coming to UCF in 1995 as a journalism instructor at the Nicholson School of Communication, Santana has focused her energy and research on empowering women across the globe. Despite teaching
for nearly two decades, Santana only realized her passion for pedagogy after a stint as a teaching assistant during her master’s program in radio-television at Temple University. That chance experience grew into a long-running love affair with academia, culminating with her doctorate in International Communication, also earned at Temple. She said one of the most common problems that international students face is a lack of confidence. It’s difficult for high-achieving students to find themselves limited or stymied by a second language. Although she’s separated by a span of more than four decades and several hundred miles her Cuban homeland, Santana holds her Caribbean heritage close to her heart. One of her proudest moments, however, was when she became an American citizen.
