2016 Elections - Candidatos / Candidates For Osceola County Commission Kissimmee, FL - Los siguientes candidatos calificaron para postularse en las posiciones actualmente disponibles en la Comisión del Condado Osceola para las sillas de los Distritos 1, 3 y 5. August 1 Last Day to Register to Vote in Primary Election Kissimmee, FL – Any Osceola County resident who wishes to register to vote in the Aug. 30, 2016 Primary Election must do so by August 1. Anyone who registers to vote after August 1 will be eligible to vote in the Nov. 8, 2016 General Election. “August 1 is when our books close. That means we cannot register anyone to vote in the Aug. 30 election after that date, but people can still register to vote in November,’’ said Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington. “Any voters wanting to change their party for the Primary must also do so by Aug. 1.’’ Voters will still be able to update their information such as address or name changes after Aug. 1. A voter can update their address by calling the Elections Office at 407-742-6000 and name changes must be done on a voter registration form which is available at the office or online at www.voteosceola.com. The name change must be dropped off or mailed to the Elections Office.

Early Voting dates for the 2016 Primary Election have also been set. Early Voting will begin on Aug. 20 and go through Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are six Early Voting sites conveniently located throughout the county. NASA's Hubble Looks to the Final Frontier This Hubble Space Telescope view of a massive cluster of galaxies unveils a very cluttered-looking universe filled with galaxies near and far. Some are distorted like a funhouse mirror through a "space warp" phenomenon first predicted by Einstein a century ago. In the center of the image is the immense galaxy cluster Abell S1063, located 4 billion light-years away, and surrounded by magnified images of galaxies much farther.

Aquanauts Splash Down, Beginning NEEMO 21 Research Mission habitat during a 16-day simulated space The NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 21 mission began on July 21, 2016, as an international crew of aquanauts splashed down to the undersea Aquarius Reef Base, located 62 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The NEEMO 21 crew is performing research both inside and outside the

mission. During simulated spacewalks carried out underwater, they will be evaluating tools and mission operation techniques that could be used in future space missions. Inside the habitat, the crew's objectives include testing a DNA sequencer, a medical telemetry device, and HoloLens operational performance for human spaceflight cargo transfer.

Politics in the Barn St. Cloud, FL - The St. Cloud Greater Osceola Chamber of Commerce sponsored the traditional Politics in the Barn, last Tuesday, July 19, at the St. Cloud Community Center. The purpose of the event was to let the citizens of Osceola County know who are running for public offices during the present political cycle, and to allow the candidates direct contact with the voters.

The floor of the center was filled with multiple booths of the candidates, where the attendants chat with them, and collected political literatures. “happily ever after.” Boo was suffering. Confined in a tarp-covered crate by his owner, his back legs weren’t functioning. The apparent paralysis and lack of mobility led to sores on his legs and abdomen. He also had a painful and infected paw due to an ingrown nail. The owner told authorities Boo’s legs hadn’t worked in more than a year and he had never been taken to a vet. Eventually, the owner surrendered the dog to Animal Services. Don’t fret. Boo is an example of what love and attention can do. Thanks to the generous donations and care he’s received, there are indications that Boo’s use of his legs is improving as he undergoes therapy at a local veterinary clinic. “The little guy has made amazing progress – all because of the passion of the staff and volunteers who work here,” said Kim Staton, Animal Services Director.

Boo has become a fixture at Animal Services, hanging out with an intern in the Veterinary Assistant Program who is fostering him. That intern, Sophia Vermeulen did more. Following the recommendation of a veterinarian, she built a cart out of PVC and rollerblade wheels so that Boo could strengthen his abdominal and back muscles. She took Boo home for a fitting with a sling that supported his body and back legs. On the mend, Boo became social with people at the shelter. The cart helped his attitude improve too, Staton says.

It didn’t end there. Dr. Antonia White recommended water therapy. Students in the Veterinary Assistant Program bought an inflatable pool. In these hot, “dog days” of summer it’s not unusual to find Boo and Sophia having a good time – something no one would have imagined a month ago. Por Viviana Moreno En los Estados Unidos, los estudiantes de inglés son un segmento de rápido crecimiento de la población de estudiantes K-12. De acuerdo con el Departamento de Educación, el número de estudiantes con dominio limitado del idioma ingles en las escuelas de EE.UU. ha duplicado en la última década, con más de 5 millones de estudiantes de inglés que actualmente están inscritos en programas K-12. En el prekindergarten hasta el tercer grado solamente, hay más de 2 millones de estudiantes de inglés. La población estudiantil aprendiz de inglés es un grupo diverso. Aunque 80% de este grupo es de habla hispana, el resto del grupo representa los habitantes de más de 460 idiomas (Hepburn, 2004). Satisfacer las necesidades de esta población diversa de estudiantes es un reto importante debido a que la mayoría de los maestros no tienen la preparación para la enseñanza lingüística y culturalmente diversa de sus poblaciones. Evidencia de la investigación sugiere fuertemente que las habilidades de alfabetización pasan del primer lenguaje de un niño a un segundo idioma y aprender a leer en la primera lengua, facilita el desarrollo de habilidades de alfabetización en inglés. Las evaluaciones de los diferentes programas de educación bilingüe muestran que los programas de instrucción que permiten a los niños inmigrantes a desarrollar su lengua materna a los altos niveles de competencia, mientras que el aprendizaje de inglés son más eficaces que los programas de inglés solamente. •Integrar diversos materiales lingüísticos en el aula. •Agrupar estudiantes de inglés y de habla inglesa juntos para investigar temas de interés mutuo. •Compartir libros para niños en los idiomas nativos de los estudiantes. • Los estudiantes de inglés pueden jugar el papel de los expertos en la pronunciación y vocabulario. • Exhibir letreros de aula y mensajes en varios idiomas. • Aprender a decir y escribir saludos simples y frases tales como "Hola" y "Gracias" en cada idioma. En esta época de exámenes de alto riesgo, los maestros están bajo una enorme presión para asegurarse de que los estudiantes de inglés hagan un progreso anual adecuado en el dominio del idioma inglés y los conocimientos de contenidos académicos. How can Early Childhood teachers help English learners develop native language literacy? By Viviana Moreno In the United States, English learners are a rapidly growing segment of the K-12 student population. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the number of limitedEnglish proficient students in the country’s schools doubled in the last decade, with more than 5 million English learners currently enrolled in K-12 programs. In pre-kindergarten through grade 3 alone, there are more than 2 million English learners. The English learner student population is a diverse group. Although 80% of this group speaks Spanish, the rest of the group represents speakers of more than 460 languages (Hepburn, 2004). Meeting the needs of this diverse student population is a significant challenge because the majority of classroom teachers have no preparation for teaching linguistically and culturally diverse populations. Research evidence strongly suggests that literacy skills transfer from a child’s first language to a second language, and learning to read in the first language facilitates the development of literacy skills in English. Evaluations of various bilingual education programs show that instructional programs that allow immigrant children to develop their native language to high levels of proficiency while learning English are more effective than English-only programs. On the whole, reinforcing children’s con-ceptual base in the native language provides a foundation for long-term growth in English academic skills. If at all possible, English learners should first be taught to read in the language they know best (their native language) while learning English. This is because it is difficult for children to read in a language that they don’t already speak. English-speaking children learn to read primarily by applying phonics to arrange sounds to match words in their speaking vocabulary. By using her knowledge of the oral language, the English-speaking child arrives at the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word. Children who are literate in Spanish have already grasped two key principles:

the alphabetic principle and phonemic awareness. The alphabetic principle is the knowledge that letters represent sounds and the phonemic awareness is the knowledge that spoken words are composed of a sequence of separable phonemes. Teachers can help English learners as follow: • Encourage family members to read to children in the home language and teach their children to read and write in that language. • Urge families to enroll their children in the community’s weekend heritage language programs. • Enlist the help of family/ community liaisons who speak students’ native languages. • Integrate diverse language materials in the classroom. • Group English learners and English speakers together to investigate topics of mutual interest. • Share children’s books in students’ native languages. • English learners can play the role of experts in pronunciation and vocabulary. • Display classroom signs and messages in various languages. • Learn to say and write simple greetings and phrases such as “Hello” and “Thank you” in each language. In this era of high-stakes testing, teachers are under enormous pressures to ensure that English learners’ make adequate yearly progress in English language proficiency and academic content knowledge. Because English learners are tested in English, many teachers believe that teaching mainly in English is the only way to help them learn English quickly. However, English language learners who are already proficient in another language should not have to leave their language at the door before entering school. Just as art, music, and drama are alternative means of expressing one’s meanings and can contribute to developing literacy skills in English, immigrant children’s native languages are a valuable resource and can facilitate acquisition of English if they are actively validated and used.

Sheriff - Noticias / News Detienen sospechoso de dos cargos de Actos Lascivos e Impúdicos Condado de Osceola, FL - El 20 de julio, la oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola respondió al Quality Inn ubicado en el 4960 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway en Kissimmee. A su llegada, los agentes hablaron con una niña de 13 años de edad, quien indicó que ella y un pariente estaban nadando en la piscina del motel con varias otras personas, incluyendo a Gabriel Graves. Orlando sits just out of the playoff Orlando, FL - Orlando City rallied back for a 2-2 draw last weekend against the Columbus Crew. It was the final match of their away trip and the first match Kaka played with them in weeks. Orlando was down 2-0 at halftime. 15 minutes in to the second half, Kaka was brought in for Julio Baptista. In the 65th minute of play, Kaka served a corner kick into the box. After a scramble for the loose ball, Kevin Molino was able to get it into the net. Just five minutes later,

Molino found Larin in the box who was able to head the ball into the net and equalize the match. Columbus put pressure on Orlando’s defense but were unable to score a winning goal. With another draw, Orlando sits just out of the playoff rankings. This weekend, with Coach Kreis with the team, Orlando will host the New England Revolution on Sunday. All eyes will be on Kreis as he makes his MLS coaching debut for the Lions.
