Osceola County opens new $5.6 million Fire Station near Reunion located along Polk Osceola Line Road, Osceola County, FL - A new $5.6 million fire station that opened near Reunion on Tuesday improves public safety for residents and visitors on the west side of Osceola County. Station 73 is a 4-bay station that is the third to be built with a cost-saving design implemented for the first time in 2016. Unlike the “temporary” station it replaces, the 12,456-square-foot facility is designed to withstand severe weather events with up to 150 mph wind speeds. Choudhry thanked Jim Bagley of Citicommunities LLC for providing basic site work and free fill dirt for the project. In addition, stormwater from the station goes to an existing pond on its adjacent property. Citicommunities also provided a free temporary station location during construction. Arnco Construction began work on Station 73,
in December 2017. It is the second new station to open this year and the third in three years. The design by CT Hsu & Associates features concrete tilt wall construction and a community room that can be used for small group meetings. Station 73 serves a large portion of the tourist area around ChampionsGate and Reunion, as well as Interstate 4 west of Disney World. “Better quarters mean that our firefighters will have a better quality of life, and that translates directly into the ability to better serve our community,” said Osceola Fire Chief Robert Sorenson. “This is a modern design that features amenities that weren’t included in stations designed just a few years ago. This forward thinking will allow us to accommodate for growth in the future in this thriving area of Osceola.”

UCF Extends InState Tuition Rate for Puerto Rican students through 2023 Orlando, FL - The University of Central Florida’s Board of Trustees recently voted unanimously to again extend the in-state tuition rate for students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, providing another boost to students and families impacted by Hurricane Maria. The Board of Trustees previously approved the waiver of out-of-statefees through spring 2019, noting the financial hardships the storm had created for families and the desire of students to stay at UCF and plan for their future. The vote ensures students from the two U.S. territories receive in-state tuition rates and waived out-of-state fees for an additional four years. Residents of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will qualify for in-state rates if they are currently enrolled at UCF, are currently enrolled in a Florida state college, or are new students admitted in spring 2019 to UCF or any Florida state college. Students meeting these criteria will continue to receive instate tuition rates through summer 2023, as long as they remain continuously enrolled. A university-wide effort has been underway during the last nine months to aid Puerto Rican students in their transition. UCF has established an informational website, assisted with housing and scholarship opportunities, hosted welcome dinners, offered intensive English classes, and identified peer mentors and Spanish-speaking faculty and staff mentors. UCF expects to soon be eligible for recognition as a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education, a distinction that reflects an institution’s commitment to diversity and comes with increased eligibility for federal funding.

Message from Clerk of the Court on Hispanic Heritage Month The celebration of our cultural roots, Hispanic Heritage Month throughout our nation is more important than ever this year. Particularly in Osceola County, we welcome an influx of our countrymen into the main land after the great devastation of Puerto Rico and adjacent islands in the Caribbean Sea, caused by the two hurricanes known as Irma and Maria. The individuals emanating from Hispanic heritage seek integration more than anything else in their new home. The expectation of some individuals that Hispanics should assimilate is not sensible. Our nation has benefited greatly by the vast contribution of the Hispanics and other immigrants economically, academically, militarily and culturally due to the rich cultural tapestry that is the United States of America. As Clerk of the Courts in Osceola County, I and my professional staff are here to serve you and assist our residents in an excellent manner, performing over one thousand functions pursuant to the Constitution of the State of Florida, and other related laws. Please visit our website: http://www.Osceolaclerk.com or call us at (407) 742-3500.

MLB Playoffs Preview This past Tuesday, October 2, the most important stretch of the Major League Baseball season began: the playoffs. A total of 10 teams fight to lift the World Series trophy. After the wild card games in the National (the Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in a 5+ hour game at Wrigley Field) and American League (the Yankees easily defeated the Oakland A's 7-2 in the Bronx), 8 teams will play the divisional series (best of 5), to ensure a spot in the championship series (best of 7) and later in the World Series. Here is the preview of each series: Yankees-Red Sox - Rivalry, Renewed. It's the biggest rivalry in all baseball, and it will be a duel of power to power: the bats of Mookie Betts, JD Martinez, Xavier Bogaerts against those of Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius. The difference could be in the pitching: Chris Sale, David Price and Rick Porcello are more dominant than the group of Luis Severino, JA Happ, Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia. Boston had the best record in the league with 108-54 (the best record in their history), but New York had more than 100 wins as well. Indians-Astros - The Last Two AL C12 in 2017 but is still the leader of this offensive that also contains Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, George Springer, Yuri Gurriel and JJ Reddick.
However, Houston's strongest point is the lineup of starting pitchers: Justin Verlander, Dallas Keuchel and Gerrit Cole. Cleveland also has plenty of offensive power (Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Donaldson and Jason Kipnis) and pitchers (Trevor Bauer, Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco). Braves-Dodgers - Los Angeles, with the Open Road to the World Series. This year, with the early elimination of Chicago in the wild card game, the path seems open for LA to return to the World Series ... or is it? The Dodgers will face the Braves of Freddie Freeman first, a team that was originally predicted to finish 4th in their division, and they ended up winning it with ease. Rockies-Brewers - The Surprises of the National League. Neither Colorado nor Milwaukee has won the World Series, with only one trip and one loss. Both are carried by the shoulders of a superstar (Nolan Arenado in Colorado, Christian Yelich in Milwaukee), and are plagued by underestimated figures or that were important for other teams (for the Brewers: Gio Gonzalez, Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas, Ryan Braun, Jesus Aguilar, for the Rockies: Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story, Kyle Freeland).
