New media communication a.s. degree coming to Valencia College Orlando, FL - Valencia College will launch a new Associate in Science degree in new media communication in the fall semester of 2018. Including a specialization in social media strategy, the curriculum will offer courses such as Writing for Social Media, Digital Storytelling and Data Literacy for Communicators, providing students with a solid foundation to excel in the rapidly-expanding media fields in Central Florida and beyond. "Our media worlds are converging. Our marketing, advertising and news all come to us on our phones", says Courtney Lewis, program chair and professor of speech and mass communication. This degree will give students an in-demand; employable skill that is much different from what your standard communication or journalism degree could offer. Students will learn theory, technique and best practices applicable to a variety of publishing platforms and digital content management systems emerging in fields such as journalism, marketing and public relations. Courses will teach digital media creation, social media campaign execution and ethical and legal boundaries in the ever-changing media landscape. Kissimmee Elementary School – Disney play Each year, the students at Kissimmee Elementary School perform a Disney play, and this year it was outstanding. With palm trees to your right and hanging lanterns above, the cafeteria was transformed into an exotic setting only worthy of a Disney play such as Aladdin. The cast featured Princess Jasmine, Aladdin, Jafar, Lago, the Genie, and the Magic Carpet, as well as a huge cast of supporting characters. From the detailed sets to the colorful costumes, and the well-known music students sang to in unison, no stone was left un-turned.

The students and staff worked long and hard, volunteering many hours after school to produce a play worthy of a Broadway production. Thank you to Ms. Nielsen, Ms. Robertson, Ms. LaDuke, Ms. Mungalsingh, Mr. Thornton, Ms. Brown, Ms. Kelley and Mr. Koren for their dedication of time and encouragement to the students. Law enforcement cadets at oTECH had the opportunity to practice interviews with various agency administrators and recruiters to sharpen their interviewing skills.

Osceola Technical College (oTECH, formerly TECO) – School News and Upcoming Events Law enforcement cadets at Osceola Technical College had the opportunity to participate in practice interviews with various agency administrators and recruiters in an effort to sharpen their interviewing skills needed by law enforcement graduates when entering this highly-competitive job market. Three different interview rooms were set up with a minimum three-person panel. Immediate feedback and critiques were given on how well each performed. At the conclusion of the panels, all participants and agency representatives came together in a unified forum to comment on the specifics of what they look for in an interview with their respective agencies. The Academy is one of the few training centers in the state providing this practical employment skills activity with the students. Osceola Technical College thanks the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Kissimmee Police Department, St. Cloud Police Department, Clermont Police Department, and the Altamonte Springs Police Department for their generous assistance with this event.

Last week, Narcoossee Middle School took a field trip to Poinciana Campus of Osceola Technical College for the Middle School Immersion Day, and it was a great experience. During the trip, the middle school students had the opportunity to interact with teachers and students from each of the school’s programs to learn all about the different careers they can get into. Congratulations to the newest Project Open Graduates at Osceola Technical College. These incredible students participated in the Project Open graduation ceremony last Wednesday and many will be joining in for the oTECH graduation on Thursday. On Wednesday, oTECH hosted ACT's Annual Graduation Ceremony honoring high school students in Osceola and Orange County who have satisfied all program requirements. oTECH had several graduates, as did St. Cloud High and Poinciana High. Gov. Scott: Floridians must be prepared for significant rain, possible flooding Tallahassee, FL - Governor Rick Scott urged Floridians to prepare for significant rain and possible flooding as the state continues to monitor the development of a weather system in the Caribbean Sea. In anticipation of heavy rain and flooding across Gulf Coast communities this week, Governor Scott also directed Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Executive Director Eric Sutton to pre-position and stage the agency’s high water vehicles and other flood response resources for rapid deployment if needed. The weather system, now designated as Invest 90L by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), was east of Belize and producing a large area of disorganized weather as it slowly moves north into the Gulf of Mexico. The Governor received a briefing from the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) on the weather system this morning. Governor Scott said, “As we continue to monitor the developing weather system in the Caribbean Sea, we know that families can never be too careful or over-prepared when it comes to severe weather. Although the storm currently has a relatively low chance of development into a tropical system, we must take it seriously. education and effective enforcement of State seat belt laws, a nationwide record high seat belt use rate has reached 90%. The Click It or Ticket campaign hopes to reach that 1 out of every 10 drivers and encourage them to use seat belts. “Seat belts save thousands of lives every year, but there are still a few motorists not buckling up,” said Chief Jeff O’Dell. “Buckling up is not optional; it’s the difference between life and death in a crash. Mexican television superstar Jacqueline Bracamontes joins Telemundo Miami, FL Renowned TV host and actress Jacqueline Bracamontes, one of the most important figures of Latin American television, signs a multi-project long-term deal with Telemundo to include hosting and her return to acting. Her first project with the network will be to host the new primetime sports and entertainment show “Viva el Mundial y Más” to premiere on June 14. Jacqueline will be joined by Karim Mendiburu of “Titulares y Más,” for the new program which will air Monday to Sunday at 7 pm/6c, and will feature daily highlights and updates of all the action and current topics
