El Condado Osceola abre nueva estación de $6 millones en Buenaventura Lakes Condado Osceola, FL - Una nueva estación de bomberos de $6 millones que se abrió el pasado miércoles 11 de abril en Buenaventura Lakes mejorara la seguridad pública para los residentes y también rendirá homenaje a la historia del Regimiento 65 de Infantería. Los miembros del ilustre 65, conocidos como los Borinqueneers, recibieron una Medalla de Oro del Congreso en el 2014. La medalla es uno de los honores más altos de la nación y se otorga a aquellos “que han realizado un logro que tiene un impacto en la historia y la cultura americana”. El Regimiento 65 de Infantería era una unidad segregada del Ejército de los Estados Unidos compuesta principalmente por soldados de la isla de Puerto Rico que se distinguieron en la Primera y Segunda Guerra Mundial y Corea. “Esta estación de $6 millones es un

signo de nuestro compromiso con la comunidad – y los miembros del Regimiento 65 de Infantería”, dijo Viviana Janer, la Comisionada del Condado para el Distrito 2 donde se encuentra la estación. “Para construir esta estación, se usó una pequeña parte no utilizada del Parque del Regimiento 65 de Infantería, lo que hace correcto dedicar la estación a ellos”. La estación de 4 puertas de salida mejorará el tiempo de respuesta y será la segunda completada con el diseño del prototipo de ahorro de costos del Condado. Además, el Condado hizo mejoras al parque incluyendo: un estacionamiento mejorado, 2 pabellones, un baño, espacio para tarima, y la maravillosa área de las banderas. Todo esto se suma al uso del parque – y debido al efecto de tener a alguien en la estación al lado del parque – debería ser más seguro y menos propenso al vandalismo.

Osceola County opens new $6 million station in Buenaventura Lakes Osceola County, FL - A new $6 million fire station that opened in Buenaventura Lakes on Wednesday April 11 improves public safety for residents and also honors the history of the 65th Infantry Regiment. Members of the storied 65th, known as the Borinqueneers, were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2014. The medal is one of the nation’s highest honors and is awarded to those “who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture.” The 65th Infantry Regiment was a segregated unit of the U.S. Army, composed mainly of soldiers from the island of Puerto Rico that distinguished itself in World War I, World War II and Korea. “This $6 million station is a sign of our commitment to the community –

and the members of the 65th Infantry Regiment,” said Viviana Janer, the County Commissioner for District 2 where the station is located. “To build this station, we utilized a small, unused part of the existing 65th Infantry Regiment Park, so it seems right to dedicate the station to them.” The 4-bay station will improve response time and is the second completed with the county’s costsaving prototype design. In addition, the County made improvements to the existing park including: an improved parking lot, 2 pavilions, a restroom, an event stage, and the wonderful flag court area. This all adds to the usability of the park – and because of the caretaker effect of having the station next to the park – it should be safer, and less prone to vandalism.

Mock Disaster Response Exercise in Kissimmee Kissimmee, FL - In preparation for the upcoming hurricane season, hundreds of Kissimmee Utility Authority employees were engaged in a full-scale mock disaster exercise on Thursday, April 12th in the morning. Designed to test the preparedness of utility personnel to work cohesively in a crisis scenario, the four-hour drill involved a wide range of activities, including both liveaction training and table top exercises. Activities included preand post-hurricane scenarios and other threats that are being handled with the same intensity as real-life incidents. A team of observers were evaluating the drill to identify vulnerabilities and exposures and make recommendations for improvements. These observations will be shared with

utility management in a drill debriefing. “Disaster drills play an important role in the overall development and testing of an emergency plan,” said Jef Gray, KUA’s vice president of information technology and utility drill coordinator. “We want to identify any shortfalls in the plan now, so they can be addressed prior to the start of hurricane season.” The drill will not impact normal utility operations. The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and ends November 30. Weather forecasters are predicting the number of named storms and hurricanes to be above historical averages, with a total of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

Battle of the Books Osceola County School Librarian’s Association - 2018 Battle of the Books to take place in two parts this year. Preliminary rounds will be held on May 11 at 10:00 a.m. at the Kissimmee Civic Center. The Final Battle for elementary, middle, and high school will be held on May 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Osceola County School for the Arts Performance Arts Center. Everyone is invited to the Final Battle. Battle of the Books is a fun academic competition for Osceola County students that inspires them to read books, often outside of the genres they may naturally pick. Additionally, students analyze those books for connections between characters, plot, setting, and other important literary devices.

In addition to the Battle of the Books competition, students who have worked on Jim Harbin entries will have the opportunity to showcase their film during the Final Battle on May 18. The FAME Jim Harbin Student Media Festival was created in honor of Jim Harbin, a former consultant with the Florida Department of Education, who originated the idea of a statewide student media festival to recognize the excellent work being done across the state of Florida by student media producers. Orange Star News El alcalde Buddy Dyer, y los comisionados de la ciudad celebran a los estudiantes de Orlando comprometidos con la universidad Orlando, FL - El 11 de abril, el Alcalde de Orlando Buddy Dyer y los Comisionados de la ciudad se unieron a los estudiantes de secundaria que participan en programas juveniles de la ciudad para celebrar su decisión de seguir estudios universitarios en el cuarto evento anual ‘College Signing Day’, inspirando a los jóvenes estudiantes a hacerse cargo de su futuro continuando con la educación después de la escuela secundaria. Como parte del día, los estudiantes usaron el equipo de la universidad elegida y firmaron certificados para anunciar públicamente la escuela a la que planean asistir. Jones High School Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble recognized by Orange County after performance at Carnegie Hall Orange County, FL - Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) hosted the Jones High School Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble for a performance at the April 10, 2018 BCC meeting. The BCC recognized the students with a proclamation after they captured the hearts of the nation following their guest appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and for performing at Carnegie Hall in New York. The proclamation recognized the group, led by Choir Director Andrea Green and Band Director Jamaal Nicholas, for their dedication and commitment to excellence. performed on the prestigious Ronald O. Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on April 8 as part of the WorldStrides National Youth Choir and National Instrumental Festivals. Jones High School was one of only nine schools in the nation invited to perform at the festival. In February, the group was featured in an interview on the Ellen Show to discuss their fundraising efforts to help pay for their trip from Orange County to New York. During their interview, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres surprised Jones High School with a donation of $100,000, courtesy of Walmart, helping them complete their fundraising goal for the trip. The group worked tirelessly to raise $100,000 prior to the donation.

Central Florida - Noticias / News Central Florida Youth identifica a 268 jóvenes que viven solos y sin hogar en la Florida Central y Seminole del 17 al 19 de octubre Orlando, FL - El martes, 10 de abril, Central Florida Commission on Homelessness y sus socios comunitarios, incluyendo Walt Disney World, la Ciudad de Orlando, Homeless Services Network de la Florida Central, Orlando Health, Zebra Coalition, Covenant House y Orlando City Soccer Club, anunciaron un nuevo estudio que identifica la cantidad de jóvenes que viven sin hogar y solos entre las edades de 13 y 24 en los condados Orange, Osceola y Seminole. El evento es patrocinado por CareerSource Central Florida y Orlando Health e incluyó un panel de discusión sobre el impacto de los resultados de este estudio en los líderes de la comunidad. Central Florida Youth Count identifies 268 unaccompanied homeless youth living in Central Florida Orlando, FL - On Tuesday, April 10, the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness and its community partners including Walt Disney World, City of Orlando, Homeless Services Network of Central Florida, Orlando Health, Zebra Coalition, Covenant House, and Orlando City Soccer Club, announced a new study identifying the number of unaccompanied youth ages 1324 experiencing homelessness across Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. The event is sponsored by CareerSource Central Florida and Orlando Health and included a panel discussion about the community impact with community leaders. The study found 268 unaccompanied youth were homeless or unstably housed on a single night in October 2017. These individuals met the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s definition of youth homelessness, which is unaccompanied youth 1324. Of these youth, 33 percent were unsheltered or unstably housed. Twelve percent of youth encountered were minors between the ages of 13-17. Study findings indicated 42 percent of individuals surveyed were African American, 26 percent white or Caucasian, and 19 percent Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish. 36 of youth surveyed were neither in school or working. Surveyed youth had much higher rates of pregnancy and contact with the criminal justice system than their stably housed peers. This data was gleaned from the results from the three-day count across Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties on

October 17-19, 2017, which consisted of a street count and organizational count. The count was conducted with over 45 partner organizations and utilized formerly homeless youth as “guides” to identify and survey youth at predetermined hotspots across the region. Researchers from Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago used the data collected during the count to perform administrative data analysis and documented resources available for youth in need. The data underscores the diverse experiences and characteristics of youth facing homelessness in Central Florida and reveal the multiple needs young people have, as well as the different systems with which they interact, including housing, child welfare, justice, behavioral health, nutrition, education, and career supports. This report also underscores the importance of a communitylevel coordinated strategy to make youth homelessness rare, brief, and one time. This study is intended as a starting point for stakeholders including local governments, nonprofits, houses of worship, and other service providers across the region to inform the development and refinement of a continuum of services provided to homeless and unstably housed youth in Central Florida. The results of the count have prompted a community wide discussion regarding next steps. Next steps include creative housing solutions for this unique population and the creation of a digital ecosystem to connect youth with the services they need.

Puerto Rico - Noticias / News AEE informa sobre avería mayor que afectó a todo Puerto Rico San Juan, PR – La Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica (AEE) informó que la línea 50700 de 230 Kv, que discurre desde la Central Aguirre en Salinas hasta la planta AES de Guayama, sufrió una falla en una de sus fases causado por una empresa subcontratada por Cobra Energy. Actualmente, se mantiene en servicio los municipios de Vieques y Culebra, así como las micro redes de Charco Hondo en Arecibo y Daguao en Naugabo. El ingeniero González Torres, Director Ejecutivo de la autoridad exhortó a la ciudadanía a tomar las medidas necesarias y a mantenerse

informados de los progresos de los trabajos a través de las redes sociales. Se preveía que la isla estaría sin energía eléctrica durante 24 a 36 horas. Al cierre de esta edición ya gran parte de los pueblos energizados tras el huracán María, tienen energía eléctrica nuevamente, reporta la AEE. Cervecera de Puerto Rico inicia exportación de Medalla Light a Florida 8 de abril de 2018: Cervecera de Puerto Rico inició la exportación de su cerveza Medalla Light a Florida, la cual estará disponible en diversos comercios a partir de esta semana. La estrategia comercial surge en respuesta a la creciente población de puertorriqueños en Florida que, de diversas formas han expresado su deseo de poder disfrutar de Medalla Light. Así lo informó, Jorge Bracero, Principal Oficial de Mercadeo de Cervecera de Puerto Rico. “Esto es algo por lo que muchos han esperado. Por eso para nosotros, más que exportar, significa conectar a miles de boricuas que ahora viven en Florida, con su querida Isla y con el sabor de la que han hecho su cerveza”, expresó Bracero. Por su parte, Grace Marie Valdés, presidenta de Cervecera de Puerto Rico, señaló que “todos en la empresa nos sentimos orgullosos de este gran logro y de que podamos llevar a tantos consumidores en la diáspora, la tradición cervecera que inició hace 80 años la familia Valdés en Mayagüez”. TESS will discover new potential planets orbiting bright host stars relatively close to Earth. In a two-year survey of the solar neighborhood, TESS will search for tell-tale dips in the brightness of stars that indicate an orbiting planet regularly transiting across the face of its star. The satellite is expected to catalog thousands of exoplanet candidates around a wide range of star types, including hundreds of planets that are less than twice the size of Earth. The TESS mission is expected to find planets ranging from small, rocky worlds to gas giants. SpaceX’s SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is a world-class launch site that builds on a strong heritage. The site, located at the north end of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, was used for many years to launch Titan rockets, among the most powerful in the U.S. fleet. Water Conservation Month proclaimed in St. Cloud, contest winners announced St. Cloud, FL - St. Cloud Mayor Nathan Blackwell proclaimed April as Water Conservation Month during

a regular council meeting at City Hall. The proclamation is intended to help increase awareness about the importance of water conservation. The winners of the 2018 Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest were also announced during the meeting. The City of St. Cloud Public Services Department has participated in the American Water Works Association’s annual contest since 2010 and sponsored this year’s contest for St. Cloud students in four divisions.
