Wages will continue to climb as well, having added 6.08% to workers’ paychecks this year, and are projected to increase another 8.22 percent this year. That’s great news, but I know residents are keen on improving their property values. Last year as a region, Central Florida residents enjoyed a 9.52 percent increase in home prices, and this year we are forecast to add another 8.64 percent.
By Bill Oakley, Good Will CEO Guest columnist This shouldn’t surprise anyone: College isn’t for everyone. That’s not to say education isn’t important. Lifelong learning is vital. We should never stop learning about the world around us. But the rising cost of a four-year degree and the time commitment to attain one makes going to college an impractical choice for many Central Floridians. So how does someone who didn’t graduate from a university find a career that pays beyond minimum wage? Jobs in construction, advanced manufacturing, HVAC and healthcare – sometimes referred to as “middleskill jobs” – are in high demand. These positions, which require education beyond high school but not a four-year degree and can pay up to $100,000 per year, make up the largest part of the labor market in the U.S., according to a recent Harvard Business School study. Goodwill Industries of Central Florida has been a key player in the region for finding employment for those on the margins of society. Over the years, one of the most common job titles for people we’ve placed is cashier – a job in the process of being phased out by technology. Meanwhile, our region is poised to continue its economic success for the
Bill Oakley CEO Good Will Industries foreseeable future. For the second straight year, Orlando leads the nation in job growth at 4.6 percent. A recent report from the Orlando Economic Partnership stated that Orlando is adding more than 1,000 positions per week. Who will fill those roles? If we at Goodwill do our part, it will be your neighbors who fill those jobs. It will also be your friends, your family, your children – and possibly you. Our role is to support people in starting – or getting back on track with – their educational journeys. Everyone should commit to a life of learning. For almost 60 years, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida has been a leading nonprofit organization in the region with one goal: providing tools that help people overcome barriers to employment and finding meaningful work. Education is, and always will be, the key to success. But success isn’t limited to only those with a four-year degree.

Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story is similar but wonderfully different. Dancing in satin heels and retro, haute couture costumes designed by Sandra Woodall, Orlando Ballet’s dancers will blend ballet and jazz based on themes by Richard Rogers as arranged by Canadian jazz band leader Ron Paley. Caniparoli, who is based with the San
Francisco Ballet, says his ballet was inspired by the popular black and white television version, and since his 2004 debut of A Cinderella Story, Caniparoli’s creative story has acquired a global following. Orlando Ballet Artistic Director Robert Hill invited Caniparoli to stage the performance this season because of its unique storyline and visuals as well as its appeal to audiences beyond traditional ballet fans. Caniparoli is one of North America’s boldest choreographers, which is clearly reflected in A Cinderella Story.
New full-hemisphere views of Earth at night NASA scientists are releasing new global maps of Earth at night, providing the clearest yet composite view of the patterns of human settlement across our planet. This composite image, one of three new full-hemisphere views, provides a view of the Americas and the whole planet at night. The clouds and sun glint — added here for aesthetic effect — are derived from MODIS instrument land surface and cloud cover products. In the years since the 2011 launch of the NASA-NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite, a research team led by Earth
scientist Miguel Román of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has been analyzing night lights data and developing new software and algorithms to make night lights imagery clearer, more accurate and readily available. They are now on the verge of providing daily, high-definition views of Earth at night, and are targeting the release of such data to the science community later this year. Today they are releasing a new global composite map of night lights as observed in 2016, as well as a revised version of the 2012 map. The NASA group has examined the different ways that light is radiated, scattered and reflected by land, atmospheric and ocean surfaces. The principal challenge in nighttime satellite imaging is accounting for the phases of the moon, which constantly varies the amount of light shining on Earth, though in predictable ways. Likewise, seasonal vegetation, clouds, aerosols, snow and ice cover, and even faint atmospheric emissions (such as airglow and auroras) change the way light is observed in different parts of the world.
