Educación / Education Pionera de Derechos Civiles Minnijean Brown Trickey va a hablar en Valencia Orlando, FL – En septiembre de 1957, nueve estudiantes afroamericanos se matricularon en la escuela superior Little Rock Central como parte de una orden de desegregación racial por parte de la Corte Suprema en el caso Brown v. la Junta de Educación. In an event open to the public, Brown Trickey will deliver a keynote speech on her experience as a pioneer in public school desegregation. Brown Trickey will speak from 5:306:15 p.m., contextualizing the harrowing

personal story that, in many ways, set in motion the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s. Her speech will be followed by a 30-minute Q & A with attendees. This event is a part of an ongoing series to celebrate Black History Month in February, as well as a special anniversary for Valencia College. Tribute to a Leader Who has Brightened Osceola County’s Future Kissimmee, FL - The Education Foundation~Osceola County announces the upcoming retirement of its President, Ken Smith on June 30, 2017. Mr. Smith is a former school teacher, mayor of Kissimmee and County Commissioner who became President of the Foundation in 1994. During Ken’s time with the Foundation he has become one of Osceola County’s leading advocates for children. He has raised millions of dollars for scholarships, reading programs, mentoring and many projects which have made a difference in children’s lives. When Ken Smith arrived at the Foundation in 1994 he was asked to raise $1,000,000 for scholarships for Osceola County students. Today the Education Foundation has over $5,000,000 in endowed scholarship

funds. The Foundation has awarded over 3,500 scholarships to graduating seniors valued at over $4,000,000. Through Ken’s efforts the Foundation has thrived and looks forward to a bright future supporting the children of Osceola County. While the Foundation Board of Directors and staff are sad to see Ken retire we are delighted that he will have more time to travel with his lovely wife, Jennifer. Escuela Superior St. Cloud – FCCLA trabaja para "limpiar la tierra" la Organización Mundial de la Salud, Quince miembros de Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA por sus siglas en inglés) en St. Cloud High donaron su tiempo para trabajar en el centro de procesamiento "Clean the World" el sábado, 29 de enero de 2017. Al donar sólo tres horas de tiempo, pudieron dar el regalo de buena salud a los niños y las familias en todo el mundo. Lograron esto clasificando y contando 900 bolsas de higiene para viaje donadas por United Airlines a "Clean the World". Debido a que la neumonía y las enfermedades diarreicas son dos de las principales causas de muerte entre los niños menores de cinco años, la misión de "Clean to the World" es proporcionar kits de jabón y de higiene a estas familias. St. Cloud High – FCCLA Works to “Clean the to provide soap and hygiene kits World” Fifteen members of Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) at St. Cloud High donated their time to work at the Clean the World processing center on Saturday, January 29, 2017. By donating just three hours of time, they were able to give the gift of good health to children and families around the world. They accomplished this by sorting and counting 900 travel hygiene bags donated by United Airlines to Clean the World. Because pneumonia and diarrheal disease are two of the leading causes of death among children under five years old, the mission of Clean to the World is

Cientos de ciclistas se reunirán para el Tour Latino 2017 a beneficio de Prospera Orlando, FL – Ciclistas apasionados originarios de distintos lugares en la Florida y de otros estados han estado entrenando para participar en el cuarto Tour Latino anual a beneficio de Prospera. El evento de ciclismo se organiza para ayudar a desarrollar negocios hispanos y crear empleos. Los ciclistas se reunirán para completar rutas de 10, 25, 50, 70 o 100 millas a través del terreno montañoso de la Florida central alrededor de Clermont. Tour Latino también incluirá este año su primera caminata/corrida de 5 kilómetros para que los familiares y amigos de los ciclistas también puedan

participar en la causa. El 19 de febrero, en las horas tempranas de la mañana, 700 ciclistas de distintas edades, niveles de experiencia y originarios de distintas ciudades y estados es reunirán en el Waterfront Park en Clermont para apoyar a las pequeñas empresas. Hundreds of Cyclists Expected at 2017 Tour Latino Benefiting Prospera Fourth annual Tour Latino Orlando, FL – Avid cyclists from across the state of Florida and beyond have been training in preparation for the fourth annual "Tour Latino" benefiting Prospera. The cycling event is organized to help advance Hispanic business and increase jobs. Cyclists will gather to ride 10, 25, 50, 70 or 100-mile routes through hilly Central Florida in the Clermont area. "Tour Latino" will also host its first 5k walk/run for friends and family members of cyclists to engage in the cause. In the early morning hours of Feb. 19, 700 cyclists of different ages, experience, backgrounds and traveling from various cities and states are expected to gather at the Waterfront Park in Clermont to pull for small businesses. Prospera’s Regional Vice President in Central Florida Gaby Ortigoni will start the event with special opening remarks. Special guest Bigg Persona will sing

the National Anthem to kick off the fourth annual "Tour Latino". Throughout the day, Prospera volunteers and employees will offer their support to the cyclists at key locations around the Waterfront Park and cycling routes with food and drinks to help maintain the riders’ energy and hydration throughout their ride. Upon completing their routes, all cyclists will receive a participation medal, partake in a Latinthemed celebration with

KUA - Noticias / News KUA Offers Free Student Admission to Osceola County Fair Kissimmee, FL.– Kissimmee Utility Authority will host two student days at the 73rd annual Osceola County Fair in Kissimmee, offering free fair admission for all students (kindergarten – grade 12) on Thursday, Feb. 16 and Friday, Feb. 17. On Feb. 16, the gates to the fair will open at 5:00 p.m. and discounted ride armbands

can be purchased for $25, which provides unlimited rides that day. On Feb. 17, the gates open at noon and free admission will be offered until 5:00 p.m. Ride armbands can be purchased for $35, good until close of day. Parking is free. That would carve out a place synonymous with glory and achievement in sports and other human endeavor.

Openings for Free SAFE Class for Women, Wednesday, February 15 Osceola County, FL - The Osceola County Sheriff's Office has openings for a self-defense awareness program for women scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 6:00 pm. Self Defense Awareness Familiarization Exchange or SAFE is designed to educate women on how to protect themselves if they should become a victim. The 2-hour class teaches that 90% of self-defense

is awareness, risk reduction and avoiding confrontation, while only 10% is physical. Taking responsibility and educating yourself is the first step in staying safe. Although you may not be able to prevent an attack from occurring, there are ways to protect yourself and lessen your chances of becoming a victim.
