Tour Latino 2020 Cientos pedalean por los pequeños negocios Orlando, FL - Por séptimo año consecutivo, ciclistas de distintas partes de la Florida y más allá del estado se reunieron el domingo, 23 de febrero para el 2020 Tour Latino. El evento de ciclismo recauda fondos para ayudar a Prospera a continuar sirviendo a los empresarios hispanos en la Florida para que inicien y fortalezcan sus negocios y generen empleos. Los participantes de este año incluyeron a más de 500 atletas diversos entre los 16 y 79 años de edad, con distintos niveles de experiencia en el deporte, que montaron sus bicicletas y apoyaron a la organización sin fines de lucro. Los patrocinadores del evento, capitanes de equipos, y los participantes hicieron del evento un esfuerzo exitoso para recaudar fondos para Prospera y promover su misión y programas. Liderados por Trentham Santiago Group los patrocinadores que permitieron que el evento se llevara a cabo fueron Advent Health, OUC, Orlando Health, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, Truist, Rosen Hotels, Orange Cycle, CNL, Univisión Orlando, 98.1 Salsa y Más, El Osceola Star, y La Prensa, entre otros.

Hundreds of cyclists pull for small business Orlando, FL - For the seventh consecutive year, cyclists from across Florida and beyond came together on Sunday, Feb 23 for 2020 Tour Latino. The cycling event raises funds to help Prospera continue serving Florida’s Hispanic entrepreneurs as they strengthen businesses and create jobs. This year’s participants included over 500 athletes between 16 and 79 years of age, with diverse backgrounds and varying degrees of expertise, who rode their bikes and supported the nonprofit organization. Event sponsors, team captains, and participants’ efforts made the event a successful fundraiser for the nonprofit organization, in addition to creating greater awareness of the nonprofit organization’s mission and services. Led by Breakaway Sponsor The Trentham Santiago Group with Ameriprise Financial, the sponsors that made the event possible were Advent Health, OUC The Reliable One, Orlando Health, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, Truist, Rosen Hotels, Orange Cycle, CNL, Univision Orlando, 98.1 Salsa y Mas, El Osceola Star, La Prensa and more.
Before dawn, the event staff, volunteers and exhibitors were joined by cyclists along with friends and families at Clermont Waterfront Park. The cyclists rode 10, 25, 62 or 100 miles to pull for small businesses and afterward enjoyed the Latin music, exhibitors, children’s entertainment, and lunch from sponsor Zaza New Cuban Diner. All cyclists that completed a route received a participation medal, and during the afternoon awards ceremony placement medals were presented to 62 and 100-mile route cyclists with the best combined times per gender and age category. Among the participants, 27 percent were women and 63 percent rode the century or metric century routes. The out-of-state participants included residents of Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Canada and Brazil. El Aeropuerto Internacional de Orlando preparado para emergencias de salud pública Orlando, FL - Como parte de nuestros continuos esfuerzos de preparación, los líderes de la administración de emergencias del Aeropuerto Internacional de Orlando se reunieron en la tarde del 27 de febrero, con funcionarios de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC por sus siglas en inglés), funcionarios de salud pública locales y del condado, agencias de EMS, fuerzas del orden y socios federales para discutir posibles escenarios y revisar los planes de salud de emergencia del aeropuerto, que cubren los protocolos de respuesta al COVID-19 (Corona virus). Orlando International Airport prepared for public health emergencies Orlando, FL - As part of our ongoing preparedness efforts, Orlando International Airport emergency management leaders met with officials from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), local & county public health officials, EMS agencies, law enforcement and federal partners on the afternoon of February 27 to discuss potential scenarios and review the airport’s emergency health plans, which cover COVID-19 (Coronavirus) response protocols. The airport emergency health plan includes the following: • Identifying which agency will respond to a potential situation, GOAA, local and/or federal agencies • Identifying the appropriate course of action including the potential of diverting flights to federally identified quarantine stations (which Orlando is not) • How to respond to varying numbers of potential patients and those around them onboard an aircraft • Securing extra protective equipment for first responding Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) personnel should an incident arise • Increasing the airport’s cleaning schedule At this time, which is also cold and flu season, CDC officials continue to urge people to take routine health precautions such as covering their mouths when they cough and sneeze, washing hands regularly and observing social distancing. Following standard cleaning recommendations, Orlando International had already increased the airport’s cleaning schedule to best combat the cold and flu season.

Dominicans commemorate the 176th Anniversary of their Independence Kissimmee, FL - Last Thursday, February 27, in the main hall of the Historic Court of Kissimmee, took place the 176th Anniversary of the Independence of the Dominican Republic. The event was held by Latinos Central Florida, Inc. The ceremony, which has been held for fifteen years in our County, serves to unite members of the Dominican community and the general public to honor this nation. Old Canoe Creek Road en St. Cloud reabrió St. Cloud, FL - Tanto el carril sur como el carril norte de Old Canoe Creek Road reabrieron el miércoles, 4 de marzo, devolviendo el tráfico a un estado casi normal después de tres meses. Old Canoe Creek Road in St. Cloud reopened St. Cloud, FL - Both the south and northbound lanes on Old Canoe Creek Road reopened Wednesday, March 4, returning traffic to nearly normal status after three months. The lanes were reopened with temporary single lane closures scheduled for minor outlying work to be performed around the road. Old Canoe Creek Road has been closed since December 18, 2019, after a large pipe collapse that destroyed a sidewalk and part of the road. The impact was significant and the scope of restoration work and safety factors forced long-term road closures that were disruptive to motorists. Since the incident, crews have been working to remove and replace the damaged nine-foot pipe culvert and rebuild the roadway; so to reestablish stormwater flow and motorist access along Old Canoe Creek Road. The canal serves as a main part of the citywide stormwater system designed to move water runoff from roads and structures into large bodies of water, especially important during storm surges. The canal is filled with water 365 days a year and flow cannot be blocked. The culvert and roadway repair work in the canal, required the contractor to run pump systems so to continuously move water downstream and divert it around the construction site. City engineers will continue to monitor traffic along with construction progress and to ensure that water flow returns to required levels. Osceola County Traffic will make adjustments to the surrounding roadways to account for the reopening of the Old Canoe Creek Road section. As a reminder, for the safety of the public, please drive with caution as drivers and pedestrians adjust to the roadway. Intermittent lane closures will be limited to a single lane allowing for traffic to flow both northbound and southbound directions.

The purpose of the Kissimmee Clean Team is to improve the level of services that the businesses, residents, and visitors experience when visiting the City. The Clean Team will focus on landscape and hardscape maintenance, including tree trimming, weed removal, plant maintenance, and lighting maintenance. Also, litter removal and the care of over 50- owned trash receptacles. Sidewalks will be maintained as well as the removal of graffiti in the public right of way. As part of this initiative to beautify downtown, the City’s CRA installed multiple street banners in downtown Kissimmee to replace the existing ones, and to highlight the eco-tourism sites and parks within our City. The goal is to continue welcoming visitors and beautify the business district. The renewal of the educational charter allows the City to continue to support and provide educational opportunities to more than 750 students from Pre-K through eighth grade. UCF visita México y se reúne con el gobernador de puebla Miguel Barbosa México City, México – La Universidad de Central Florida viajó a México el lunes, 25 de febrero. Esta visita fue promovida por el cónsul de México en Orlando Juan Sabines. UCF se reunió con el gobernador de Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, para promover oportunidades de intercambio en este estado, para los jóvenes universitarios, y los egresados que buscan continuar formándose, en Estados Unidos. Acompañado de la secretaria de economía, Olivia Salomón, y el cónsul de México en Orlando, Juan Sabines, el gobernador Barbosa recibió un reconocimiento por parte de Jeffrey Jones, Vice Provost de UCF Global. La delegación de UCF, conformada por rectores y decanos, estuvo integrada por Youcheng Wang, Dean del Rosen College of Hositality Management; Katidia Coronado, instructora asociada de periodismo de la Nicholson School of Communication; y Waldemar Kasrwowski, profesor y presidente, Deparment of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems La delegación de UCF tuvo como primera reunión de esta visita un encuentro con el secretario general de la Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior, Jaime Valls. En esta productiva reunión participaron universidades mexicanas como el Instituto Politécnico Nacional, la Universidad Autónoma de México, la Universidades Autónoma de Nuevo León, entre otras. Los rectores y representantes de las universidades mexicanas conversaron ampliamente con los directivos de la UCF sobre las oportunidades de intercambio académico en ingenierías, hospitalidad y comunicación. El mismo lunes, la delegación de UCF se reunió con la secretaría de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología del Gobierno de la Ciudad de México, a fin de abrir más oportunidades para los estudiantes de esta ciudad. El martes, 25 de febrero la delegación de UCF fue recibida por los directores generales de América del Norte y de la Dirección General de Protección para Mexicanos en el Exterior, el Embajador Chacón Carillo y Julián Escutia respectivamente, así como por el embajador Iván Sierra del Instituto para Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME), y Francisco Chacón de la Coordinación Política. El miércoles, 26 de febrero la delegación de UCF, visitaron la planta automotriz de AUDI Puebla, donde se produce el modelo Q5, 33 unidades cada hora, de estos únicamente el 5% se queda en México. Uno de los resultados de esta visita, es que los estudiantes de UCF podrán realizar sus prácticas profesionales en esta impresionante planta. El último día el viernes, 28 de febrero UCF fue recibida por el titular de la Secretaría de Educación Pública, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán. De esta reunión se derivaron acuerdos como el de enviar estudiantes de UCF para enseñar el idioma inglés en comunidades marginadas del estado de Puebla y otros del sureste de México.

UCF visits Mexico and meets with Puebla Governor Miguel Barbosa Mexico City, Mexico - The University of Central Florida traveled to Mexico on Monday, February 25. This visit was promoted by the Consul of Mexico in Orlando Juan Sabines. UCF met with the Governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, to promote exchange opportunities in this state for young university students and graduates who seek to continue their education in the United States. Accompanied by the Secretary of Economy, Olivia Salomon, and the Consul of Mexico in Orlando, Juan Sabines, Governor Barbosa received an award from Jeffrey Jones, Vice Provost of UCF Global. The UCF delegation, made up of rectors and deans, included Youcheng Wang, Dean of Rosen College of Hositality Management; Katidia Coronado, Associate Instructor of Journalism at the Nicholson School of Communication; and Waldemar Kasrwowski, Professor and Chairman, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems The UCF delegation had as a first meeting of this visit a meeting with the Secretary General of the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions, Jaime Valls. Mexican universities such as Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Universidad Autónoma de México, and Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, among others, participated in this productive meeting. The rectors and representatives of the Mexican universities talked extensively with UCF directors about academic exchange opportunities in engineering, hospitality and communication. On the same Monday, the UCF delegation met with the Secretary of Education, Science and Technology of the Mexico City Government, in order to open more opportunities for the students of this city. On Tuesday, February 25, UCF delegation was received by the General Director of North America and the General Director of Protection for Mexicans Abroad, Ambassador Chacón Carillo and Julián Escutia respectively, as well as Ambassador Iván Sierra from the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME), and Francisco Chacón from the Political Coordination. On Wednesday, February 26th, the delegation visited the AUDI Puebla automotive plant, where the Q5 model is produced, 33 units every hour, of which only 5% remain in Mexico. One of the results of this visit is that UCF students will be able to do their professional practices in this impressive plant. On the last day, Friday February 28, UCF was received by the head of the Ministry of Public Education, Esteban Moctezuma Barragan. From this meeting, agreements were derived such as sending UCF students to teach English in marginalized communities in the state of Puebla and others in southeastern Mexico.

1er Encuentro Jóvenes Venezolanos en el exterior se realizará en Miami Por Marco A. Jiménez Potenza – El Osceola Star Miami, FL - Debido al alto número de venezolanos que se han visto obligados a emigrar de su país a distintos lugares de Latinoamérica, Europa y el mundo; la Fundación de Jóvenes Venezolanos en el Exterior (Jovenex) realizará su primer encuentro en el Alfred L. McCarthy Hall del Miami Dade College el próximo 14 de marzo de 2020 con la intención de crear un ambiente de debate y de generación de propuestas que permitan conectar a la juventud venezolana en pro de la lucha por la libertad, la democracia y la reconstrucción de Venezuela. Este primer encuentro comenzará a las 9:30 a.m. y culminará a las 5:00 p.m. contando con la presencia de aproximadamente 200 personas. Se contará con la presencia de líderes juveniles venezolanos que vendrán desde Venezuela, Europa y distintas partes de los Estados Unidos. Durante el encuentro se realizarán mesas de trabajo que se enfocarán en temas diversos de la realidad venezolana con el objetivo de crear fuertes lazos entre la sociedad civil organizada en el extranjero. Adicionalmente se realizará un documento conclusivo explicando la situación actual de la juventud venezolana en el exterior, el cual será entregado a las instancias de la Organización de Estados Americanos, la Comisión Permanente de Política Exterior de la Asamblea Nacional y la Embajada de Venezuela en Estados Unidos. 1st Meeting of Young Venezuelans abroad is going to take place in Miami By Marco A. Jiménez Potenza – El Osceola Star Miami, FL - Due to the high number of Venezuelans who have been forced to emigrate from their homeland to different places in Latin America, Europe and the world, the Foundation of Young Venezuelans Abroad (Jovenex) will hold their first meeting at Alfred L McCarthy Hall of Miami Dade College this March 14, 2020, with the intention of creating an environment of debate and generation of proposals that allows Venezuelan youth to connect in favor of the struggle for freedom, democracy and the reconstruction of Venezuela. This first meeting will begin at 9:30 am and end at 5:00 pm with the approximate attendance of 200 people. There will be the presence of Venezuelan youth leaders who will come from Venezuela, Europe and different parts of the United States. During the meeting, workstations will focus on diverse issues of Venezuelan reality with the aim of creating strong ties between the organized civil society abroad. In addition, a concluding document will be made explaining the current situation of Venezuelan youth abroad, which will be delivered to the instances of the Organization of American States, the Permanent Foreign Policy Commission of the National Assembly and the Venezuelan Embassy in the United States. To the Editor by Peggy Choudhry Al Editor El pasado 17 de febrero fui acompañada por medios de comunicación, residentes, organizaciones sin fines de lucro y varios funcionarios electos para otorgar premios de subvenciones de mejoras a cuatro organizaciones sin fines de lucro por un total de $34,126.00 por su trabajo excepcional en todo el Condado Osceola, y anuncié la iniciación de servicios nuevos y que ayudarán a cambiar la vida de todos los residentes en el Condado Osceola.

To the editor On February 17, 2020, I was joined by the press, residents, non-profit organizations and several elected officials as I awarded betterment grant awards to four non-profit organizations totaling $34,126.00 for their exceptional work throughout Osceola County, and I announced the initiation of new and life-changing services for all the residents in Osceola County. It was an important day for everyone. I am extremely pleased and happy to announce the very first Salvation Army Emergency Center in Kissimmee. The Salvation Army has agreed to join Osceola Christian Ministry, which has provided some essential services for 20 years, and will now take over current operations to increase services at that same location. It was an exciting moment
for many of us as it clearly shows that working together only brings more success to our County and Cities. It has been a long journey, however, this day proved that through hard work, dedication and faith, all things are possible! The Salvation Army also announced that by working together with other non-profits in Osceola will prove to be beneficial for all of us. They proved this by donating two buses to assist with transportation needs of another great organization, the Council on Aging. For many years the Council on Aging has provided services to residents and seniors. Our goal is to fill the gap for those who fall into hardship and need immediate guidance, advocacy and support. This is just phase 1 of many pending efforts for growth and expansion that lie ahead! Congratulations to everyone who joined in our efforts!

Sheriff - Noticias / News Arrestos por Robo a Mano Armada y Secuestro Condado Osceola, FL - El 29 de enero y el 3 de febrero de 2020, los detectives de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola respondieron al Bank of America ubicado en el 35 S. Doverplum Avenue, Kissimmee, a dos robos de cajeros automáticos. En ambos robos, las víctimas fueron asaltadas en el cajero automático y fueron sacadas de la zona por los sospechosos. A través de las pistas de la investigación, los detectives de robos pudieron identificar a ambos sospechosos juveniles como Víctor Jahniel Velázquez y Tazwell Degaberto Berríos. Los detectives pudieron arrestar a Víctor Jahniel Velázquez, quien cooperó con los detectives. En la investigación, los detectives se enteraron de que Tazwell Degaberto Berríos huyó a la zona de Filadelfia, PA. El 28 de febrero de 2020, los detectives del Departamento de Policía de Filadelfia y de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola localizaron y arrestaron con éxito a Tazwell Degaberto Berríos en Filadelfia, PA. Tanto Víctor como Tazwell fueron acusados de Robo a mano armada con arma de fuego, Robo de auto a mano armada, Secuestro a mano armada y Robo menor.

Doverplum Avenue, Kissimmee, Florida to two ATM robberies. In both robberies, the victims were robbed at the ATM machine and were driven out of the area by the suspects. Through investigative leads, robbery detectives were able to identify both juvenile suspects as Victor Jahniel Velazquez and Tazwell Degaberto Berrios. Detectives were able to arrest Victor Jahniel Velazquez, who cooperated with detectives. In the investigation, detectives learned Tazwell Degaberto Berrios fled to the area of Philadelphia, PA. On February 28, 2020, the Philadelphia Police Department and Osceola County Sheriff’s Office detectives successfully located and arrested Tazwell Degaberto Berrios in Philadelphia, PA. Both Victor and Tazwell were charged with Armed Robbery with a Firearm, Armed Carjacking, Armed Kidnapping, and Petit Theft.

Los 8 candidatos al título de la NBA Estamos a poco más de un mes del inicio de los playoffs en la NBA, y los candidatos se empiezan a separar de los candidatos. Enlistemos los ocho máximos candidatos, con la razón principal por la que podrían ganarlo todo y la razón que les impediría hacerlo. 8) Philadelphia 76ers Mayor ventaja: talento. Embiid, Simmons, Horford, son el equipo con mayor talento en el Este. Mayor desventaja: no hay química. Simmons juega mejor sin Embiid, y viceversa. Parece que no se llevan lo suficientemente bien. 7) Denver Nuggets Mayor ventaja: son incómodos. Es durísimo ganarles de visita. Son físicos, grandes y agresivos. Mayor desventaja: La juventud. La inexperiencia les costó el año pasado ante los Blazers, y todavía les falta para alcanzar a los de LA. 6) Houston Rockets Mayor ventaja: excelentes anotadores. Houston tiene a Harden, el mejor anotador de la liga, y detrás de él a Westbrook, quien después de un difícil inicio, está teniendo una gran racha anotadora. It will cost them dearly. 5) Toronto Raptors Biggest advantage: title core remains. Outside of Kawhi and Green, the baby dinosaurs have the same championship roster from last year. Biggest disadvantage: no Kawhi no party. Last year, the claw (and the Warriors' injuries) led them to the title. This year they will need even more luck.
Biggest advantage: Brad Stevens. The young coach is an expert in making good players excellent, and medium players good. Tatum and Walker are having the season of their lives.
