Cantante y compositor Darius Rucker

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, PGA Tour champion Marc Leishman and singer Darius Rucker named 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational Ambassadors

Orlando, FL - Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, former Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard champion Marc Leishman, and singer/songwriter Darius Rucker will serve as the ambassadors for the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard March 5-8 at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, FL.

Since 2017, ambassadors have assisted with traditional roles at key events to perpetuate Mr. Palmer’s legacy. All of this year’s ambassadors personify the legacy of Arnold Palmer, earning the highest achievements in their industry while sharing his commitment to giving back to others. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has served as Mayor since 2003 and has worked tirelessly to shape Orlando into a future-ready city where unity and partnership are the keys to opening the doors of opportunity for all residents. Prior to Mayor, he served for a decade in the Florida Senate. Mayor Dyer earned his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Brown University and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Florida College of Law. Before he chose to serve in public office, Mayor Dyer worked as an environmental engineer. Marc Leishman, the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard champion, was the first champion to receive the red cardigan for his victory. A native of Australia, Leishman, 36, has won five PGA TOUR titles, including last month's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, and five international titles. He has competed for the International Team in the Presidents Cup four times and twice has represented Australia in the World Cup. Marc and his wife Audrey founded the Begin Again Foundation in 2016 after Audrey survived a lifethreatening bout with sepsis in 2015. The foundation's mission is to support families that are battling

medical and life challenges. In 2018, the couple helped open the first-on-TOUR Family Care Suite at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. Rucker, a personal friend of Mr. Palmer, first attained multi-Platinum status in the music industry as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the GRAMMY Award-winning band Hootie & the Blowfish. Since releasing his first Country album in 2008, he has celebrated four No. 1 albums on the Billboard Country chart and nine No. 1 singles on Country radio. In 2014, Rucker won his third career GRAMMY Award for Best Solo Country Performance with his 4x Platinum-selling cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel.” Last year saw Rucker return to the road with his Hootie & the Blowfish bandmates for their first full tour in over a decade as they celebrated the release of new album Imperfect Circle. In recognition of his charitable endeavors via the game of golf, Rucker received Golf Digest’s prestigious Arnie Award in February 2019. This year marks the 42nd staging of the tournament that bears the name of golf legend, Arnold Palmer. Mr. Palmer brought the former Florida Citrus Open to his Bay Hill Club in 1979 and turned it into one of the most elite events in golf. It offers a purse of $9.3 million, one of the richest on the PGA TOUR, and the winner will receive a three-year TOUR exemption instead of two years. Previous Ambassadors 2017: Peter Jacobsen, Graeme McDowell, former Governor of Pennsylvania Tom Ridge, Annika Sorenstam and Curtis Strange 2018: Rickie Fowler, Jacobsen, Nancy Lopez

The MLS is still far away from the Liga MX

Todavía no.

For some reason, the debate nowadays in Mexican sports media is whether the MLS has already reached, or as some say, if it has already surpassed "in everything" Mexican football. The arguments used are the exodus of star players from the Liga MX north of the border, such as in recent years Raúl Ruidíaz, Brian Fernández, Alan Pulido, and more recently, Rodolfo Pizarro. The latter, national squad player, consolidated locally, three-time champion with Pachuca, Chivas and Monterrey, had everything to make the leap to Europe, as many other Mexicans have, but David Beckham's offer to join his brand new club, Inter Miami, was too tempting. It’s undeniable that for this handful of soccer players, the opportunity to live in the first world, with much better pay, more rest and less obligations, was difficult to refuse. In those moments, beyond the professional aspirations, there are the personal and family ones, and that’s totally understandable. But those reasons have nothing to do with the league’s level. For the Mexican soccer player, going to Europe is a challenge. Unless it’s to Spain, the language will be unknown. The environment is more hostile. The stakes are very high. The opportunities are scarce. And those who really succeed are counted. In contrast, in the United States, many arrive as instant idols. Even if they don’t get any titles, their own talent and popularity keep them relevant. The season runs from March to October, November at most, and the rest of the time is free.

As for the power to attract stars, especially in the final stage of their careers, MLS is second to no one in the world. Beckham, Kaka, Lampard, Gerrard, Zlatan, Rooney, Drogba, as well as Carlos Vela and Chicharito, all decided to arrive to the United States (or Canada) already consolidated and without much ahead. In the future, there is talk of Griezmann, Suárez, Cavani, even CR7 and Messi, as reinforcements of Beckham’s team in South Florida. But that does not mean, at all, that the level of the league is better. There are only 10 or 15 renowned players among over 500, many poorly paid and without major aspirations, and when more and more teams are being added, the tendency is for the average level of the league to drop. It’s at that general level where the Liga MX still, and by far, blows its counterpart out of the water. We saw this week the duel of the best team in the MLS, Los Angeles FC, against one of the best in the Liga MX, Leon. The emeralds rolled over Vela and company. The defenses are still weak, its pace is so slow, and except for some brilliant moments, its attack is nil. Atlanta United, champion of 2018, could not beat Motagua of Honduras. Nor the Montreal Impact to Costa Rican Saprissa. It's been 20 years without a champion from the MLS in the Concacaf CL. Instead, it’s been 14 years in a row with Mexican titles. Until an American or Canadian team does not lift this trophy, we cannot even begin to think that they have reached the Mexicans. Not yet.
