Valencia College Osceola 9/11 Memorial Valencia College conmemora el 11 de Por Marco A. Jiménez Potenza - Osceola Star septiembre Kissimmee, FL – El Campus de Osceola del Valencia College realizó una ceremonia conmemorativa recordando a aquellas personas que perdieron sus vidas en los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre del 2001, y al mismo tiempo honraron a los servicios de emergencia, quienes diariamente están dispuestos a arriesgarlo todo para salvar y servir a otros. Con la ayuda del 463rd Cadet Squadron del Civil Air Patrol, se colocaron 298 banderas que representan las casi 3 mil vidas y se puede considerar que cada una de estas banderas equivalen a 10 individuos que lamentablemente perdieron sus vidas durante este ataque. La ceremonia dió inicio a las 6:00 p.m. con el canto "America the Beautiful" por un cuarteto estudiantil proveniente de The Osceola County School for the Arts, para luego hacer la presentación de
los colores en donde los oficiales marcharon con sus respectivas banderas gubernamentales. Consecuentemente, el teniente James Kirwin del departamento de bomberos de la ciudad de Nueva York dio la respectiva promesa de lealtad para luego escuchar las palabras y anécdotas del Capellán Daniel Rivera, Kathleen Plinske, y Joe Richardson. Posteriormente, representantes del Valencia College junto a socorristas comunitarios colocaron tres coronas conmemorativas al departamento de policía, al departamento de rescates y una en representación de los ciudadanos, las cuales al finalizar la ceremonia se colocaron en la biblioteca del Valencia College junto a un altar conmemorativo. Al finalizar, el comando de la guardia de honor hizo sonar la campana, y el Capellán Daniel Rivera dio la bendición concluyendo asi el evento con la melodía "Because of the Brave" cantada por el cuarteto estudiantil.

Valencia College commemorates September 11 Por Marco A. Jiménez Potenza - Osceola Star Kissimmee, FL – The Osceola Campus of Valencia College held a commemorative ceremony remembering those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and at the same time honoring emergency services, who every day are willing to risk everything to save and serve others. With the help of the 463rd Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, 298 flags were placed representing approximately 3,000 lives and each of these flags can be considered to be equivalent to 10 individuals who unfortunately lost their lives during this tragic incident. The ceremony started at 6:00 p.m. with the song America the Beautiful performed by a student quartet from The Osceola County School for the Art, then during the presentation of
the colors, officers marched with their respective government flags. Lieutenant James Kirwin from the New York City Fire Department gave the respective Pledge of Allegiance and then were heard the words and anecdotes of Chaplain Daniel Rivera, Kathleen Plinske, and Joe Richardson. Subsequently, representatives of Valencia College together with community first responders placed three commemorative wreaths to the Law Enforcement, Fire & Rescue Department, and one representing the citizens, which at the end of the ceremony were placed in the Valencia College library next to a memorial altar. At the end, the honor guard command rang the bell, Chaplain Daniel Rivera gave the blessing and the event concluded with the melody Because of the Brave performed by the student quartet.

News Regresa el cónsul Juan José Sabines Guerrero como cónsul titular de Orlando Se alcanza cifra récord en nombramientos del Servicio Exterior Mexicano “Actualmente, el 74 por ciento del total de las embajadas, consulados, misiones y oficinas de México en el exterior están encabezadas por miembros del Servicio Exterior Mexicano (SEM).” Informo la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE). Resaltó que con lo anterior mencionado se alcanza una cifra récord en nombramientos de miembros de carreras como titulares de representantes de México en el extranjero. En un comunicado, se señaló que en esta misma línea y en el marco de los esfuerzos emprendidos por el Gobierno de México para la protección de la comunidad mexicana en el exterior, el canciller Marcelo Ebrard, nombró a siete cónsules de carrera en América del Norte. Todos los titulares nombrados, cuentan con la experiencia y formación profesional necesarias para velar por los derechos e intereses de los mexicanos fuera de su país, y para la implementación de la estrategia de protección del Gobierno de México. Los siete nuevos titulares de los consulados de carrera de México son:

Es licenciado en Ciencias Políticas y Administración Pública por la Universidad Iberoamericana, con estudios en Relaciones Internacionales por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y en Finanzas Públicas por la Universidad de Berkeley. Fue gobernador constitucional del estado de Chiapas en el período de 2006 a 2012. El cónsul Juan Sabines Guerrero, además de ejercer como cónsul titular, durante su administración pasada también se dedicó a crear alianzas con un sinnúmero de entidades comunitarias de todas las nacionalidades abarcando desde el centro hasta el norte de la Florida. También se dedicó en resaltar el consulado de México en Orlando ante las entidades departamentos de policía y sheriffs además de a senadores, congresistas y el alcalde de Tallahassee en Florida, creando una armonía de respeto y consideración para con los mexicanos residentes de la Florida.

Osceola County, FL -The School Board of Osceola County has approved a modified instructional calendar for the 2019-2020 school year declaring September 3 and September 4 as non-attendance days for students and staff. Any additional days missed during the remainder of hurricane season may require make-up days be added to the academic calendar.

To the Editor El gas natural no es un combustible renovable y limpio para la Florida Por Brent Probinsky El gran camión de gestión de residuos verde y blanco recorría el agradable vecindario de Orlando recolectando basura de latas que cubrían la calle. Pintado con orgullo en letras gigantes en su costado decía: "Piensa verde, piensa limpio" y "“Corremos con gas natural de combustión limpia”. Gestión de residuos debe ser elogiado por la preocupación de la compañía por el medio ambiente al convertir parte de su gran flota de camiones de combustible Diesel a gas natural "limpio y renovable". ¿Correcto? Bueno ... no está bien. El gas natural no está limpio. No es renovable. Es un combustible fósil peligroso como el carbón y el petróleo y un importante contribuyente al calentamiento global y la crisis climática. ¿Por qué Gestión de Residuos afirma con orgullo y gran parte del público cree que el gas natural es una fuente de energía "limpia" y un "puente" hacia una economía verde y renovable? Parte de la respuesta radica en la inteligente comercialización de gas natural de la industria de combustibles fósiles. Fue renombrado como "gas natural", de lo que siempre ha sido, 85 a 95 por ciento de metano, un peligroso gas de efecto invernadero. El gas natural ahora es abundante gracias a la tecnología de "fracking" que inyecta agua, productos químicos y arena en los sitios de gas subterráneos, creando presión que obliga a su liberación. Más de la mitad de las 500 plantas generadoras eléctricas de carbón sucio en los Estados Unidos han sido cerradas o reacondicionadas para quemar gas natural. El gas natural es ahora la mayor fuente de combustible para la generación de electricidad en los EE. UU. Painted proudly in giant letters across its side was, “Think Green, Think Clean” and “We run on clean burning natural gas.”
In Florida, 61 % of electricity is generated by natural gas, 23% from coal and 12 % nuclear. Florida ranks 47th in the country in renewable electric generation with only 3% of the total. Florida is the third most populous state after California and Texas and the third state in the amount of electricity consumption. Those who tout the wonders of natural gas a clean or cleaner burning fuel, point out that burning of natural gas contributes only 448 grams of carbon emissions per kilowatt hour as compared to coal that contributes 960 grams of carbon per kilowatt hour, diesel, 778 grams, and heavy oil, 760 grams. But methane, CH4, is a super potent greenhouse gas. When climate scientists measure its global warming potential, GWP, it’s an astounding 34 to 87 times more potent than CO2.

Waste Management should be praised for the company’s concern for the environment by converting part of its big truck fleet from dirty burning diesel fuel to “clean and renewable” natural gas. Right? Well… not right. Natural gas is not clean. It’s not renewable. It’s a dangerous fossil fuel like coal and oil and a major contributor to global warming and the climate crisis. Why does Waste Management proudly claim and much of the public believe that natural gas is a “clean” energy source and a “bridge” to a green, renewable economy? Part of the answer lies in the fossil fuel industry’s clever marketing of natural gas. It was renamed, “natural gas,” from what it has always been, 85 to 95 percent methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas. Natural gas is now in abundant supply thanks to the fracking technology that injects, water, chemicals and sand into underground gas sites, creating pressure that forces its release. More than half of the 500 dirty coal fired electric generating plants in the U.S. have been shut down or refitted to burn natural gas. Natural gas is now the biggest source of fuel for electricity generation in the U.S.
What the fossil fuel companies fail to tell us when they claim that natural gas contributes only half the carbon as coal or oil, is that they are measuring only one part of the life cycle of natural gas, the point of combustion. The main component of natural gas, methane, does not have to be burned to be a dangerous greenhouse gas. The contribution of natural gas as potent, heat trapping gas, occurs at several points in its life cycle even before it’s burned. A major problem is that there are significant leaks of methane at oil and gas drilling sites. According to researcher, Farika Powell, who wrote for the Sightline Institute, “from 2009 to 2014, drilling on federal lands released enough natural gas into the atmosphere to power 5.1 million homes for one year.” When the industry’s pre-combustion leaks of methane are considered, natural gas is at least equal to coal or oil’s contribution of heat trapping greenhouse gases. Natural gas is not a “bridge” to a clean, renewable economy. It’s a “dead end” to a dangerously high level of carbon in the atmosphere. The cost-efficient technology of renewable energy is here. We must find the political will to begin immediate conversion to renewables and leave natural gas where it belongs, in the ground.

Por tal motivo el Condado Orange celebró el pasado 10 de septiembre en el Cypress Grove Estate House, su 20º celebración anual del mes de la Hispanidad. El alcalde del Condado Orange, Jerry L. Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in Orange County Orange County, FL The Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the culture and traditions of residents in the United States ascending from Spain, Mexico and Central American countries. For this reason, Orange County celebrated its 20th annual celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month on September 10th at the Cypress Grove Estate House Orange, Mayor Jerry L. The purpose of the Boríkén Awards is to acknowledge the exemplary work of Puerto Rican adults and youth in diverse roles within our community.

Desfile Puertorriqueño 2019 Condado Osceola, FL - El Centro Cultural Puertorriqueño de la Florida en el Condado Osceola celebró el 8vo Aniversario del Desfile Puertorriqueño de la Florida el pasado sábado, 7 de septiembre, en el Kissimmee Lakefront Park y llenó las calles del centro de la Ciudad de gran colorido. El comité organizador cada año dirige sus esfuerzos a cumplir con su pasión por promover la cultura puertorriqueña y que ésta sea parte de la historia del Condado Osceola. El desfile contó con la presencia del ex boxeador profesional Prichard Colón, como Padrino del Desfile y fue dedicado a su presidenta Ingrid Figueroa. Puerto Rican Parade 2019 Osceola County, FL - The Puerto Rican Cultural Center of Florida in Osceola County celebrated the 8th Anniversary of the Puerto Rican Parade of Florida last Saturday, September 7, at Kissimmee Lakefront Park and filled Downtown streets with a lot of color. The organizing committee each year directs its efforts to fulfill its passion for promoting Puerto Rican culture and that it is part of Osceola County's history. The parade was attended by former professional boxer Prichard Colón as Godfather of the Parade and was dedicated to its president Ingrid Figueroa. Concurso anual del calendario 2020 de KUA Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee Utility Authority invita a los estudiantes a usar el poder del arte para promover la conservación de energía en el 26to concurso anual de arte del calendario de la empresa. La búsqueda anual de talentos está abierta a los estudiantes del Condado Osceola matriculados desde el jardín de infantes hasta el sexto grado, incluidos los estudiantes de escuelas públicas, “chárter”, privadas y los educados en el hogar. Se le pide a los estudiantes que usen crayones, marcadores, pinturas o gráficos generados por computadora para representar un mensaje de conservación de energía en su participación. KUA seeks student art entries for 2020 Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee Utility Authority invites students to use the power of art to promote energy conservation in the utility’s 26th annual calendar art contest. The annual talent hunt is open to Osceola County students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 6, including public, charter, private, and homeschooled students. Students are asked to use crayons, markers, paints or computergenerated graphics to depict an energy conservation message in their entry. A panel of local judges will select the 12 best entries – one for each calendar month – which will be featured in the utility’s 2020 full-color wall calendar. Each student who submits an entry will be honored with a letter of appreciation, a copy of the calendar and a chance to win single day admission tickets for their family to
the Island H2O Live! water park at Margaritaville Resort Orlando. The 12 winning students will have their artwork featured in the calendar and receive a $150 cash prize. A grand prize winner, selected from the 12 winning students, will have his/her name and artwork featured on the calendar cover and affixed to one of KUA’s fleet vehicles for one year. To further encourage participation, the grand prize winner’s school will receive $750 in art supplies, and the school with the most total entries in the contest will receive $500 in art supplies. Organizándose de seis a nueve de la mañana, un total de 90 corredores de todas las edades decidieron ayudar a Venezuela a perseguir la libertad mediante este gran evento deportivo y comunitario. Con el sonido de los tambores y típicas melodías venezolanas junto con la esencial ayuda de voluntarios y patrocinadores, la carrera logró formalizarse de ocho a nueve de la mañana. Al recorrer el Harbor Park los competidores pudieron apreciar el amanecer junto a la abundante vegetación que adornaba y guiaba su camino.

Jiménez Potenza - Osceola Star Orlando, FL - On the morning of Sunday, September 8, 2019, around the Harbor Park of the city of Orlando, the second 5-kilometer “Chasing Freedom” race was successfully held, which was prepared by the Venezuelan organization “Ponte En Sus Zapatos” and in that way they raised funds to help Venezuela face the humanitarian crisis.
