Kissimmee, FL - Cerca de 500 líderes comunitarios, actuales y pasados miembros de la junta de directores, empleados de la empresa, jubilados, amigos y familiares se reunieron el 27 de marzo para un almuerzo de despedida en honor a Jim Welsh, el presidente y gerente general de KUA desde hace muchos años. Amy Zubaly, directora ejecutiva de la Asociación de Electricidad Municipal de la Florida, leyó una proclamación de su junta directiva otorgándole una membresía honoraria de por vida a Welsh. Kissimmee, FL - Nearly 500 community leaders, current and former utility board members, utility employees, retirees, friends and family members gathered on March 27, for a retirement luncheon honoring Jim Welsh, KUA’s long-time president and general manager. Amy Zubaly, executive director of the Florida Municipal Electric Association, read a proclamation from her board bestowing an honorary lifetime membership to Welsh. KUA incoming president Brian Horton introduced Welsh’s two children, Erinn and James, and four grandchildren and presented a bouquet of flowers to Welsh’s wife, Marjie. The event was capped by a musical performance by employees of KUA Customer Service department. Welsh officially retires after more than 36 years of public service.

Community champions deliver Meals on Wheels Osceola County, FL On Wednesday, March 20, community champions delivered Meals on Wheels on behalf of the Osceola Council on Aging. More than 30 community champions delivered meals on wheels to more than 200 customers. Among the champions were members of the Board of Directors of the Osceola Council on Aging, representatives of
the City of St. Cloud, Osceola County, the Kissimmee Police Department, members of the business community and community leaders to name a few. The Osceola Meals on Wheels program have more than 300 clients, Meals on Wheels has a waiting list of 75 seniors, at the meeting sites they serve 325 seniors and have approximately 125 on the list of wait.

La 24ª celebración anual de cine de Valencia College destacará el trabajo de los estudiantes Orlando, FL - El sábado 13 de abril, Valencia College celebra otro año de trabajo estudiantil con su celebración número 24 de cine anual. Los estudiantes y el público en general, que se llevan a cabo en el nuevo Campus de Producción de Cine y Tecnología de Sonido en el Campus Este de la universidad, están invitados a ver proyectos de cortometrajes creados por estudiantes y una película. Como novedad en la celebración de este año, los asistentes pueden participar en talleres de producción dirigidos por estudiantes y profesores. Los cortometrajes de los géneros drama, comedia, acción y suspenso se mostrarán en dos bloques a partir de las 2 p.m. y las 6 p.m., con trabajo de estudiantes actuales y ex alumnos de Valencia College, así como socios de la industria. Entre las secciones de cortometrajes, los talleres sobre técnicas de producción de películas ("Slating for the Camera", "Focusing the Shot" y "Boom Operation") tendrán lugar a partir de las 3:30 p.m.

Valencia College 24th Annual Film celebration to highlight student work Orlando, FL - On Saturday, April 13, Valencia College celebrates another year of student work with its 24th annual film celebration. Taking place at the new Film Production and Sound Technology Building on the college’s East Campus, students and the general public are invited to view student-created short film projects and a feature film. New to this year’s celebration, attendees can participate in production workshops led by students and faculty. Short films in the drama, comedy, action and suspense genres will be shown in two blocks beginning at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., featuring work from current students and Valencia College alumni as well as industry partners. In between the short film sections, workshops on film production techniques (“Slating for the Camera,” “Focusing the Shot” and “Boom Operation”) will take place beginning at 3:30 p.m.
This year’s feature film, showing at 7:45 p.m., will be “Missionary,” which was co-written by Valencia College screenwriting professor Bruce Wood. Mujeres Destacadas 2019 Orlando, FL - El periódico La Prensa realizó su evento anual Mujeres Destacadas el pasado viernes, 22 de marzo, en el Country Club de Orlando dentro de la celebración del Mes de la Historia de la Mujer. Bajo el nombre de Mujeres Destacada 2019, De Ella para El, este año, por primera vez, fueron las mujeres quienes nominaron a los hombres. De un impresionante grupo de candidatos, se escogieron tres finalistas, en seis categorías: Arte, Negocios, Comunidad, Educación, Hombre Extraordinario e Inspiración. Un emotivo momento fue la entrega del “Lifetime Achievement Award” a Armando Payas, uno de los primeros
profesionales hispanos en llegar al área de Orlando. El Dr. Payas, nacido en Cuba, ha ejercido la abogacía en el Estado de la Florida por los pasados 42 años, siempre al servicio de la comunidad. El orador principal fue José Nogueras, cantante y compositor puertorriqueño quien, tras ser diagnosticado con cáncer y recibir un trasplante de hígado, ha utilizado su experiencia como sobreviviente para llevar un mensaje de motivación y optimismo. “Los hombres reconocidos en este evento son un ejemplo de perseverancia, liderazgo, excelencia y dedicación,” dijo Maritza Beltrán, Gerente General de La Prensa.

Mujeres Destacadas 2019 Orlando, FL - La Prensa newspaper held its annual event “Mujeres Destacadas” (Outstanding Women) last Friday, March 22, at the Country Club of Orlando as part of the celebration of the Woman History Month. Under the name of Mujeres Destacada 2019, from Her to Him this year, for the first time, it was the women who nominated the men. From an impressive group of candidates, three finalists were chosen, in six categories: Art, Business, Community, Education, Extraordinary Man and Inspiration. An emotional moment was the delivery of the "Lifetime Achievement
Award" to Armando Payas, one of the first Hispanic professionals to reach the Orlando area. Dr. Payas, born in Cuba, has practiced law in the State of Florida for the past 42 years, always at the service of the community. The main speaker was José Nogueras, Puerto Rican singer and composer who, after being diagnosed with cancer and receiving a liver transplant, has used his experience as a survivor to carry a message of motivation and optimism. “The men recognized at this event are an example of perseverance, leadership, excellence and dedication,” said Maritza Beltran, La Prensa General Manager.

El Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts celebra un hito en la construcción Condado Osceola, FL - Líderes de la Florida Central se unieron a la comunidad artística para celebrar la ceremonia de culminación de la fase 2 del Centro de Artes Escénicas Dr. Phillips el 21 de marzo. El Steinmetz Hall y The Green Room completan la visión original de tres salas para el Centro Dr. Phillips y están programadas para abrir en la primavera del 2020. Orange County, FL - Central Florida leaders joined the arts community to celebrate the topping off ceremony for phase 2 of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on March 21. The Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room complete the original three-theater vision for the Dr. Phillips Center and is set to open in spring 2020. Attendees and construction workers from Whiting-Turner signed a ceremonial steel beam that will be used to top off the Steinmetz Hall’s theater box. Whiting-Turner, the construction manager for phase 2, broke ground in March 2017. The Steinmetz Hall is a state-ofthe-art, 1,700-seat acoustic theater featuring a movable stage, floor and walls to provide custom floorplans for the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Orlando and
other “unplugged” local, national and international performances. The Green Room is the Center’s new venue for private recordings, creative programming and other intimate events. Additionally, an expanded lobby for both spaces will be built, along with full kitchen facilities to serve both theaters. The Steinmetz Hall, named after Chuck and Margery Pabst Steinmetz, was partially funded by the two local philanthropists who committed $12 million toward the project in 2015. Orange County Government and its tourism industry partners have provided approximately $207 million of construction funds for the Center, backed by the Tourist Development Tax. Of that total, $143 million was used for construction of phase 2 and Steinmetz Hall.

Osceola Regional Medical Center ofrece implante cardíaco “Watchman” Kissimmee, FL - Osceola Regional Medical Center es ahora el primer y único hospital en el Condado Osceola que ofrece a los pacientes cardíacos una alternativa a los medicamentos anticoagulantes a largo plazo con el dispositivo “WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure” (LAAC). El dispositivo LAAC es un implante cardíaco permanente que reduce efectivamente el riesgo de accidentes cerebrovasculares en pacientes que sufren de fibrilación auricular no valvular (AFIB, por sus siglas en inglés). AFIB es un latido cardíaco irregular experimentado por al menos 2.7 millones de estadounidenses que tienen cinco veces más probabilidades de sufrir un derrame cerebral que alguien con un latido cardíaco regular. Los pacientes con AFIB usualmente usan anticoagulantes a largo plazo para evitar que se formen coágulos en una arteria, una vena o el corazón. AFIB puede provocar coágulos sanguíneos, derrames cerebrales, insuficiencia cardíaca y otras complicaciones relacionadas con el corazón. Después de que se haya implantado el

Osceola Regional Medical Center first in Osceola County to offer Watchman heart implant Kissimmee, FL - Osceola Regional Medical Center is now the first and only hospital in Osceola County to offer cardiac patients an alternative to long-term blood thinner medication with the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) device. The LAAC device is a permanent heart implant that effectively reduces the risk of stroke in patients suffering from non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFIB). AFIB is an irregular heartbeat experienced by at least 2.7 million Americans who are five times more likely to suffer a stroke than someone with a regular heartbeat. AFIB patients usually use anticoagulants (blood thinners) long-term to prevent blood clots from forming in an artery, a vein or the heart. AFIB can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. After the LAAC device is implanted,
patients can discontinue the use of long-term blood thinner medication, reducing the risk of bleeding which can occur with the use of these anticoagulants. Patients with AFIB not caused by a heart valve problem and who are currently taking blood thinners can be eligible for this procedure. Compared to anticoagulants, the LAAC device demonstrates statistically superior reductions in conditions such as: •Hemorrhagic stroke (85 percent reduction) •Disabling stroke (63 percent reduction) •Cardiovascular death (56 percent reduction) The LAAC device is implanted with a one-time, minimally invasive procedure via the groin. Following the procedure, patients are typically discharged within 24 hours and can be taken off anticoagulants in 30-45 days.

The school also added a new program to its Spanish language lineup, to help newly arrived Puerto Ricans

Estudio de UCF señala las necesidades de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola Condado Osceola, FL - Cuando el Sheriff Gibson asumió el cargo en el 2017, sabía que la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola estaba integrada por algunos de los mejores hombres y mujeres que trabajan en el cumplimiento de la ley. Sin embargo, debido a que este Condado es uno de los de más rápido crecimiento en el estado de Florida y en la nación, el Sheriff Gibson observó que era fundamental determinar qué cambios debían implementarse para poder continuar con este crecimiento y servir mejor a los Ciudadanos. Por esto, en el verano del 2017, la Oficina del Sheriff se asoció con la Universidad de la Florida Central para realizar un estudio exhaustivo. Este estudio ayuda a la Oficina del Sheriff a comprender dónde están hoy y adónde deben ir durante los próximos 5, 10, 20 años, para poder mantenerse al día con el crecimiento esperado del condado. La Oficina del Sheriff utilizará la información de este estudio para desarrollar un plan estratégico que sea efectivo para la agencia y nuestra comunidad. El Sheriff Gibson y su personal comenzarán a reunirse con la Junta de Comisionados del Condado Osceola y su personal para
discutir el apoyo fiscal, y elaborar un plan de pasos basado en los fondos disponibles. UCF study of needs of the Osceola County Sheriff's Office Osceola County, FL - When Sheriff Gibson took office in 2017, he knew that the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office was comprised of some of the best men and women working in law enforcement. However, because Osceola County is one of the fastest growing counties in the State of Florida and in the nation, Sheriff Gibson saw that it was paramount to ascertain what changes needed to be implemented, in order to keep up with this growth and best serve the citizens of Osceola County. That is why in the summer of 2017, the sheriff’s office partnered with the University of Central Florida to conduct a comprehensive study. This study helps the sheriff’s office understand where they are today and where they need to go for the next 5, 10, 20 years, in order to properly keep up with the expected growth of the county. The sheriff’s office will be using the information from this study in order to develop a strategic plan that will be effective for the agency and the community. Sheriff Gibson and his staff will begin meeting with the
Osceola County Board of County Commissioners and their staff to discuss the fiscal support for a step plan and crafting a step plan based on the available funding. The BOCC has shown a commitment to the public safety of this county and has already implemented a step plan with the county EMS department. The sheriff’s office is confident that they can create a step plan that properly values sheriff’s office employees, while being fiscally responsible. This study highlights the importance of the agency being effectively integrated with the community, as being vital to the continued success. As the study concludes, the citizens of Osceola County do not report that crime and disorder are significant problems for them but that instead traffic, parking and housing issues are the biggest areas of concern. With this and all information provided, they will work with the partner agencies, community leaders and businesses to continue our community strong initiatives to solve problems and the concerns of the citizens.

Multiple burglary arrest (Poinciana) Osceola County, FL - Deputies with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division recently responded to multiple complaints of vehicle burglaries in the Poinciana Area. All of the complainants reported that items were taken from their vehicles. Using surveillance video detectives were able to get a suspect description. Through investigative techniques, detectives with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Tourist Policing Unit (TPU), West Property Crimes Unit, and South Property Crimes Unit were able to identify the suspect in these cases as Travis Andrews. An arrest warrant was obtained for Andrews and a subsequent search warrant for his home (658 Royalty Court in Poinciana, Florida). Items stolen in these crimes were recovered from Andrews’ home. Enough evidence was collected from this search warrant to charge Andrews with approximately twenty (20) burglaries in the area. This investigation is continuing.

Un repaso por la fecha FIFA Ha concluido la primera fecha FIFA del 2019 (y la única hasta finales de mayo), así que revisemos cómo les fue a algunas de las selecciones más populares: Estados Unidos: El inicio de la era Berhalter fue entre regular y bueno. El viernes por la tarde, desde el Orlando City Stadium, la selección de las barras y las estrellas debutó en el año frente a Ecuador. A pesar del dominio durante todo el encuentro, los estadounidenses no podían plasmarlo en el marcador. Los sudamericanos jugaron a nada, pero, con justicia y un poco de suerte, al 81’ Zardes anotó el único gol del encuentro, en la victoria de Team USA 1-0 sobre Ecuador. Pero el martes, EUA se vio superado por una selección chilena con muchas ausencias y dudas. Chile tuvo más tiros, posesión e intención en la cancha del Houston Dynamo, pero, aun así, un gol tempranero de Pulisic (quien después saldría lesionado), fue suficiente para que Estados Unidos y Chile empataran 1-1. Cabe mencionar, que EUA fue más peligroso en las pocas que tuvo. Debut incierto para Berhalter. México: Por primera vez en mucho tiempo, se respira algo extraño tras un partido de la selección: optimismo. El Tri ganó, gustó y goleó tanto a Chile (3-1) como a Paraguay (4-2). Usando a todos los convocados, Martino pudo plasmar sus ideas en poco tiempo: posesión del balón, salida con el balón en los pies, clara idea de ataque, solidez defensiva, repliegue. Sin sudar demasiado, pudo despachar a dos rivales de CONMEBOL, eso sí, que están en pleno proceso de renovación. El Tri del Tata ilusiona, sin duda, aunque todavía queda mucho qué trabajar.

Lejos quedaron los días de pelear por la Copa del Mundo. Nombre por nombre, nunca había visto a una squadra azzurra tan pobre. Aun así, no les fue nada mal, venciendo 2-0 y 6-0 a Finlandia y Liechtenstein, respectivamente. Pero dudo que les alcance para hacer ruido en la Euro 2020. Italia está en crisis. Argentina: Con Messi o sin él, Argentina no juega a nada. Cuando está el 10, poco puede hacer sin mucha ayuda de sus compañeros, evidentemente inferiores a los del Barça. Y sin él, tampoco hubo mucha mejoría, solo no saben a quién echar la culpa. Revisando la plantilla de Argentina, podemos decir que la crisis está en carne viva, desde el entrenador, Scalioni, quien llegó como interino y se terminó quedando, hasta los convocados, muchos de ellos reservas en Europa, otros titulares en equipos de las ligas argentina, mexicana o MLS.
