Kissimmee, FL - City of Kissimmee commissioners highlighted the contribution of ten local leaders during the Women's History Month Reception held on Tuesday, March 19, at the Kissimmee City Hall. These women represent different professional areas, from the business world to non-profit organizations, and their hard work and dedication are recognized. They are leaders who, through their contributions to the community, have made a great impact on the lives of people in need, helping them to overcome their challenges. The "Women's History Month" was established as a way to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women in historical events and in the contemporary society of the United States. This national celebration began in the early eighties when Congress passed several laws and resolutions on the subject. In 1987 it was declared that March would be the month of the official celebration of the US Government dedicated to honor the women of the country.

Osceola Escuelas / Schools Joseph Malfara nombrado Maestro del Año 2020 del Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola Kissimmee, FL -En reconocimiento a sus logros como destacado educador, Joseph Malfara ha sido nombrado Maestro del Año 2020 del Distrito Escolar de Osceola. Cada día, él motiva a los estudiantes a alcanzar el éxito académico en Poinciana High School como maestro de Inglés III, Honor, Cursos Avanzados del Lenguaje Inglés y Composición. Joseph Malfara named Osceola School District’s 2020 Teacher of the Year Kissimmee, FL -In recognition of his accomplishments as an outstanding educator, Joseph Malfara has been named as Osceola School District’s 2020 Teacher of the Year. Each day, he challenges students toward success at Poinciana High School as an English III, Honors, Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Teacher. His influence on the campus at Poinciana High School is evident at all levels, from the at-risk students to the highest achieving students. Mr. Malfara has worked tirelessly to implement many strategies that have
led to significant gains and maximize student performance on the SAT. Due to these efforts, Poinciana High has seen amazing growth from their students. The average student scores increased from 442 to 476 in his content area. They have also seen an increase in the percentage of students meeting their concordance score after their junior year, which went from 47% to 73% in just one year. In Mr. Malfara’s classroom, 78% of his students met their reading and writing graduation requirement, compared to 57% of other junior-level English classes. Much of
Julissa Cardona nombrada Empleada Escolar del Año 2019 del Distrito Escolar de Osceola Kissimmee, FL -Julissa Cardona ha sido nombrada Empleada Escolar del Año 2019 del Distrito Escolar de Osceola en reconocimiento a su constante apoyo a las escuelas, su sobresaliente ética de trabajo y su dedicación a los niños y sus familias. Por cinco años, ha sido empleada en el Departamento de Programas Especiales del distrito, en donde actualmente sirve como Enlace para Padres de Título I. Su enfoque principal es la creación e implementación del programa Learn2Read en colaboración con el Sistema de Bibliotecas del Condado Osceola y el programa Mommy and Me en Cypress Elementary. Como parte del programa Learn2Read, ella entrena a más de 4,000 padres y estudiantes entre las edades de 0-2 años en alfabetización de la primera infancia. Cada joven recibe de su mentor una camisa y una corbata durante una ceremonia en la que recitan su credo de mantener
los valores del grupo. Su participación como mentor ha sobrepasado las expectativas. Su alumno ha aumentado su promedio general de calificaciones de 2.00 a 2.46 y se ha inscrito en cursos en línea para continuar aumentando su promedio general. Él es además uno de los seis miembros de ASCEND PLC, un programa diseñado para guiar a estudiantes superdotados a ser aceptados en una de las mejores 25 universidades al graduarse de escuela superior. this success is due to his students’ improved SAT skills. In addition, Mr. Malfara has been at the forefront of leading a mentorship group known as the “Suit Up Society,” which was developed in 2017. The group’s purpose is to mentor young men who have grown up without a positive male influence and to improve their lives academically, behaviorally, and socially. Each young man is presented with a shirt and tie from his mentor during a ceremony, where they recite a creed to uphold the values of the group. His involvement with his personal mentees has surpassed expectations. His mentees have raised their GPA from 2.0 to 2.46, and have enrolled in online
classes to continue to boost their GPA. He is also one of six members in the ASCEND PLC, which is a program designed to take academically-gifted students and guide them to admittance into a top 25 university upon graduation. Mr. Malfara also inspires his students not only in the classroom but also on the athletic field as an announcer for many of the home athletic events and by posting social media inspirational messages, otherwise known as the daily “Malfaraisms.” Mr. Malfara will now represent Osceola County at the state level in the Florida Department of Education/Macy’s 2020 Teacher of the Year judging.
Julissa Cardona named Osceola School District’s 2019 School-Related Employee of the Year Kissimmee, FL - Julissa Cardona has been named as the 2019 School-Related Employee of the Year for the Osceola School District in recognition of her unwavering support to schools, her outstanding work ethic, and her dedication to children and their families. For five years, she has been employed in the district’s Special Programs Department, where she currently serves as a Title 1 Parent Liaison. Her primary focus is the creation and implementation of the Learn2Read program partnership with the Osceola County Library System
and the Mommy and Me program at Cypress Elementary. As part of the Learn2Read program, she trains over 4,000 parents and 0-2-year-old students in early childhood literacy. Parents are taught how to engage with their children and deliver educational playtime activities to stimulate early childhood development. In the Mommy and Me program, Ms. Cardona trains 1,500 mothers and helps to prepare three-year-old students to enter prekindergarten. Thanks to her expertise and care, these successful programs have expanded from one to five different library branches, and continue to be the highest attended programs offered at each location. Julissa champions parent engagement in education on a daily basis, and serves as an important and respected resource for the parents and children in our community.

Kissimmee, FL - The 5th Annual RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo Cattle Drive is a unique event that brought the public back to Osceola County's roots. On Monday, March 18th the general public was able to experience the launch of this year's RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo as dozens of cattle were driven through Historic Downtown Kissimmee. The event started at the Osceola County Courthouse and ended at the intersection of Broadway and Sproule. There was an after party from 4pm – 6pm.

El evento “March for Meals 5K” presentado por KUA se llevó a cabo el sábado, 16 de marzo de 2019 en el Kissimmee Lakeview Park e incluyó una carrera y caminata de 5K (3.1 millas) para individuos y/o equipos corporativos y familiares y competencia del equipo más grande y de mejor espíritu. Hubo competencia de equipos, una carrera gratuita para niños, subasta silenciosa y más. ¡Todos los que participaron y terminaron la carrera recibieron una medalla! March for Meals 5k run & walk to benefit Meals on Wheels Osceola County, FL - The Osceola Council on Aging “Meals on Wheels” program hosted the national 2018 March for Meals campaign. The March for Meals 5K presented by KUA event took place on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Kissimmee Lakeview Park and included a 5K (3.1 mile) run and walk for individuals and/ or corporate and family teams, largest and most spirited team competition, a free Kid’s Run, silent auction, and more. Everyone who participated and finished the race received a medal. This is the second year for “Team Challenge”. This allowed folks to signup a team with five plus participants and compete for team awards in the
following categories; MOST TEAM SPIRIT and LARGEST TEAM! MCO Airport News Federal Aviation Administration grounds all 737- 8 & 9 Max aircraft Orlando, FL - Orlando International Airport (MCO) is currently in discussions with the airlines affected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decision to ground all Boeing 737- 8 & 9 MAX aircraft. There is no daily total of 737-8 & 9 MAX aircraft at MCO. The Airlines may shift and move their aircraft on a daily basis based on need. Orlando International is ready to accommodate airline requests to park planes at their facility if requested. En el 2017 firmé dos iniciativas para respaldar “Green Por: José Energy” y en los alcalde de la últimos años, la Kissimmee Ciudad ha instalado estaciones de carga para vehículos eléctricos, ha reemplazado las ineficientes luces del campo atlético con accesorios de LED, ha implementado vehículos de saneamiento eléctricos híbridos que dependen menos de los combustibles fósiles y se han realizado modificaciones estructurales para mejorar la eficiencia energética en las instalaciones, e implementó varios sistemas automatizados de HVAC para reducir el consumo de energía. Commission approves solar energy for all City facilities Understanding the importance of sustainability isn’t anything new for the City of Kissimmee. In 2017 I signed two initiative to support Green Energy and over the past several Alvarez, years the City has Ciudad de installed electric vehicle charging stations, replaced inefficient athletic field lighting with LED fixtures, deployed hybridelectric sanitation vehicles that rely less on fossil fuels, made structural modifications to improve the energy efficiency at facilities, and implemented various automated HVAC systems to lower energy consumption. On Tuesday February 5th I requested the Kissimmee City Commission to approve a partnership with Kissimmee Utility Authority to power 100 percent of its facilities with solar energy, beginning in 2020. Kissimmee will be the first city in the State of Florida to have 100 percent of its facilities powered by solar energy. The partnership between the City of Kissimmee and KUA allows the City the opportunity to secure a fixed energy rate for the next 20 years, independent of the fluctuating costs associated with typical power generation. This agreement does not require the City to make any capital investments or long-term commitments. This is a positive step toward the future as we decide to use clean energy and is a decision that will benefit the City and its residents for many years to come.

City approves annexation of small enclaves City of Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee and Osceola County finalized the approval of an Interlocal Agreement on Monday, February 18, 2019, to annex 35 small enclaves within existing City limits. Annexed properties will become a part of the City and will be entitled to all respective benefits and services. Annexed properties, currently receiving service from Waste Management will continue to utilize their service until the end of the City/County fiscal year, Monday, September 30, 2019. After which, the City’s sanitation department will provide this service. Three City cans will be delivered the first week of September to newly annexed properties for household waste, yard debris, and recyclable items. As for the zoning of the properties, the City is committed to limiting the impact annexation has on property owners during the process and has committed to zone properties in a manner which is compatible or superior with their existing Osceola County zoning.
As part of this commitment, the City adopted Ordinance 2994 which allows for the “grandfathering” of non-conforming uses within annexed properties. Additionally, the City’s highly trained law enforcement, fire and EMS professionals will be providing services to the annexed properties instead of the previously designated Osceola County Fire Rescue and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. The City of Kissimmee is proud to note that it’s Kissimmee Fire Department has an ISO Class 1 rating – this is the highest fire rating available. As for the Kissimmee Police Department, officers have the ability to provide more concentrated coverage. Newly annexed residents will benefit from these services as public safety is a top priority to the City of Kissimmee. Exposición de Veteranos 2019 Por: Caroline Vanderlinder - Osceola Star Condado Osceola, FL - La Exposición de Veteranos del Condado Osceola, celebrada el sábado 16 de marzo en el Museo de Historia Militar, por Peggy Choudhry, Comisionada del Distrito 1 del Condado Osceola, rindió un tributo especial a los veteranos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y rindió homenaje a todos los veteranos que lucharon en ella. Una vez al año, cada noviembre, el país hace una pausa en los trabajos y las escuelas para honrar el servicio que nuestros veteranos han ofrecido en la guerra. Veterans Expo 2019 By: Caroline Vanderlinder - Osceola Star Osceola County, FL - The Osceola County Veterans Expo held on Saturday, March 16th at the Museum of Military History by Peggy Choudhry, Osceola County District 1 Commissioner paid a special tribute to World War II veterans and tributed all veterans who fought. Once a year every November, the country pauses work and school to honor the service our veterans have done in the war. However, Choudhry reminds us that veterans make the ultimate sacrifice every day to their families and for our country, freedom is never free, and we shouldn’t just pay our respects one day out of the year. Choudhry introduced the Ceremony by telling the veterans and the audience how much of an honor it was for her to be there with the heroes she believes changed the country. Traveling back to World War II, the United States came together in just the first year during such a hard time to build what was key in order to win the war after being horribly attacked by Japan. Time was
not a precious commodity that we had much of and everyone rolled up their sleeves for their country, women took over the jobs while men were away, ships were being built in just 30 days, and airplanes took a day each. As a nation we learned the importance of unity and solidarity. Because of those veterans, soldiers of today have better tactics and training, those men were the ones who paved the way for modern technology in the military. Now we can say we are prepared to make sure an attack like that never happens again. Choudhry also spoke about her passion as a commissioner to help the most vulnerable in our community that include our brave veterans. She fights to provide for every American the most basic human needs and services by committing with agencies to continue the efforts for life, liberty, and property. The wonderful afternoon ended with lively chatter, food, drinks, and many fun activities including touring the museum.

Possession of child pornography arrest Osceola County, FL - On March 12, 2019, detectives with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit served a search warrant on a residence located at 3575 Somerset Circle, Kissimmee. The search warrant was executed after detectives received a cyber-tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in reference to child pornography. A forensic analysis of the electronics seized during the search warrant revealed numerous files of confirmed child pornography. An arrest warrant was obtained for Jonah Price, age 18. Mr. Price, a student, was arrested at Liberty High School on March 14, 2019, and charged with 10 counts of Possession of a Photo of Sexual Performance by a Child.

Three storylines to follow on FIFA Friendly Matches

Tres historias para seguir en la fecha FIFA Por primera vez en el año, las selecciones nacionales entrarán en escena a partir del miércoles 20 de marzo y hasta el próximo martes. Habrá partidos amistosos en todo el mundo, y aunque no haya ningún torneo en juego, sí hay muchas historias qué seguir. Debuts, regresos y renovaciones, esto es lo más importante de la fecha FIFA: 1) Debuta el Tata Después de una infumable e inútil segunda etapa del Tuca Ferretti al frente del Tri, la Federación nombró al elegido para dirigir el rumbo de la selección mexicana los próximos cuatro años (si todo sale bien): Gerardo el Tata Martino. Reciente campeón de la MLS, y exitoso en donde ha estado (casi siempre), Martino decidió convocar a mezcla de promesas (Lainez, Alvarado, Gudiño) y veteranos (Guardado, Ochoa, Chicharito). Destacan la presencia de los dos mexicanos en mejor forma, Jiménez y Lozano, la decisión de llevar a Alexis Vega por encima de Henry Martín, así como las ausencias de Carlos Vela, Héctor Herrera y Gio dos Santos. El proceso iniciará cuando México juegue por primera vez desde octubre, ante la selección chilena. El partido será el viernes 22 a las 10:15 ET, desde San Diego. El segundo partido estaría lleno de morbo, de no ser porque Juan Carlos Osorio, antiguo técnico de la Selección, renunció misteriosamente a Paraguay tras haber dirigido solo un encuentro. México y Paraguay saltarán a la cancha el próximo martes, a las 10 de la noche, desde Santa Clara. Le deseo y le auguro el mejor de los éxitos a Martino, y solo espero que afición y prensa le dejemos trabajar.
2) El retorno del rey El 30 de junio del 2018. Kazan, Rusia, fecha y lugar exactos del último partido de Lionel Messi con la Selección Argentina. Algunos pensaron que no volvería. Pero el rey no ha escrito su último capítulo con la albiceleste. Eso sí, para cuando Argentina salte a la cancha del Wanda Metropolitano el viernes para enfrentar a Venezuela, será totalmente distinta a aquella que cayó ante Francia. Cambió de técnico, del perdido Sampaoli al desconocido Scaloni. Cambió de delanteros, de Higuaín y Agüero a Dybala y Martínez. Cambió de Director de Selecciones Nacionales, con la llegada del Flaco Menotti. E inclusive cambió de uniforme. Pero lo más importante, de cara a la Copa América, es el regreso de Messi. Veremos cómo se lleva con Scaloni y cómo se adapta a esta Argentina renovada. 3) La renovación de Die Mannschaft Tras el peor año en la historia de la Selección Alemana (sin exagerar), los tetracampeones del mundo están remodelando la casa. Joachim Löw, de manera polémica, decidió ponerle fin a la carrera internacional de Thomas Muller (29 años), Jerome Boateng y Mats Hummels (ambos de 30), y cederle su lugar a la nueva camada del futbol alemán. Carbahn Motorsports scores win in Michelin Pilot Challenge Sebring, FL - On a steamy Friday afternoon at on Friday March 15 Sebring International Raceway, Carbahn Motorsports clinched its first victory in the IMSA MICHELIN Pilot Challenge the way every team would wish to do so – in dominating fashion. Starting third on the grid for the Alan Jay Automotive Network 120 in the No. 39 Audi R8 GT4, Tyler McQuarrie jumped out past the cars on the front row immediately on the first lap. A caution deeper in the field, also on the first lap, solidified the No. 39 Audi in the lead over the pole-sitting No. 46 Team TGM Mercedes-AMG GT4. The battle on the racetrack carried over into the pits, with both Carbahn Motorsports and Team TGM pitting 1-2
on the same lap. McQuarrie handed over the reins to co-driver Jeff Westphal and the Carbahn crew excelled on the stop, allowing the No. 39 Audi to retain the lead over the No. 46 MercedesAMG out of the pits and back on track. The team would go on to lead 42 of the race’s 49 laps en route to victory. Inching closer to the top step of the podium is the BimmerWorld Racing duo of James Clay and Devin Jones in the No. 82 BMW M4 GT4. Clay and Jones finished fourth at the seasonopening race at Daytona and the only improvement to make would be a win. Finishing third for the second consecutive race was Motorsports In Action’s No. 69 McLaren GT4 of Jesse Lazare and Corey Fergus.

Taylor nearly overtook No.31 immediately after a pit stop, with an hour and 20 minutes remaining, when Nasr took over the No. 31 from Derani, but on that occasion, Nasr eventually managed to pull away. Taylor wasn’t done yet, though. He closed in on
Nasr with 21 minutes left in the race, getting to within 0.2 seconds of Nasr, but still not quite close enough to make his move. The fifth and final full-course caution came out with 15 minutes to go, giving Taylor one last shot on the ensuing restart with under 10 minutes remaining, but Nasr built just enough of a lead to seal a 1.030-second victory over the No. 10. It was the closest overall finish in the 67-race history of the Twelve Hours, eclipsing the 2016 margin of victory of 2.82 seconds.
