2020 Elections Osceola County, FL – If we judge by the continuous candidacy announcements, it would be logical to think that the elections are this year, but that is not the case. Many are the candidates who have decided to express their intention to run for a political position more than a year in advance. Through our "Candidates" section, we will be having a weekly article publishing applicants for political positions available in Osceola County and the City of Kissimmee by 2020. All information will also be available on our Web and Facebook pages. One of the most popular positions is City of Kissimmee Chair 5 which belongs to the Mayor of the City. The incumbent Jose Alvarez cannot
seek re-election due to the fact that he reached the maximum number of years of service that the electoral law allows. Until the closing of our edition, six people had officially registered with the Supervisor of Elections. The deadline to submit candidacies is June 19, 2020. The position of Mayor of the City of Kissimmee is a non-partisan one, for which all candidates must go to primary elections on August 25, 2020. If none reaches 50 percent of the votes, the two candidates with the most votes go to a second round on November 3, 2020 in the general elections. Exercise your right to vote and have your opinion count.

Construction program, develops skills and offers second opportunities to inmates Orange County, FL - Recently, when Tyree Rogers, a former Orange County Jail inmate and participant in the Inmate Construction Program, reached out to the program’s manager, Robert Barnett, it was the latest of many outreaches that validated why the program was launched three years ago. Barnett, an Orange County Corrections Department senior community corrections officer, is always deeply moved when he hears from former students. The six-week, full-time program is a partnership among Orange County Corrections, Valencia College and Goodwill Industries of Central Florida. Valencia already had a construction program but wanted to work with the jail to develop one with inmates. Valencia provides the tools and equipment and facilitates the course curriculum. Graduates receive a Valencia College student ID that grants them free LYNX transportation for one year, a certificate of completion, three college credits toward an Associate in Science degree in Construction and Civil Engineering Technology, as well as the following certifications: National Center for Construction Education and Research; Maintenance of Traffic; First Aid/CPR; and OSHA 10. Breaking the Cycle Most importantly, the recidivism rate decreases greatly for those who complete the coursework.
Ideally, inmates who go through the program go on work release, get a job with a livable wage, leave work release with some money and go to work as an employee soon after. To date, 11 classes have graduated, and Class 12 started late February 2019. The program, which launched in 2016, has graduated 204 students. Of those, 135 have secured full-time employment (13 females, 122 males), mostly in the construction industry. Each class also selects a service project. Completed service projects include inmate mattress carts, book shelves for the inmate library, picnic tables for a homeless drop-in center and handicap-accessible tables for a senior living facility. Partnering for a Worthy Cause Orange County’s Inmate Construction Program could not be successful without employment partners such as the I-4 Ultimate Construction Project in concert with companies like Skanska and The Lane Construction Corporation. In 2017, when Lane learned about the program, it immediately got involved. To date, 90 percent of the individuals the company has hired from the program are still working there. Lane offers recently released graduates with opportunities that pay a living wage and also provides medical/dental/vision benefits in order for them to care for themselves and their families. The company also encourages growth potential through many opportunities within the company.

Valencia College - News
Además de UCF, Valencia College y Seminole State College, las siguientes escuelas de Florida han solicitado y recibido fondos: Broward College, College of Central Florida, Daytona State College, Eastern Florida State College, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Indian River State College, Santa Fe College, St. Thomas University y University of South Florida.
U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy
Valencia College receives federal funds as a result of Murphy’s displaced student Washington - U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Florida, announced that Valencia College will receive more than $1,000,000 in federal funds as a result of a Murphy-led initiative to support K-12 schools and colleges that enrolled students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands displaced by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Last year, Murphy announced that thanks to this initiative, K-12 schools in Florida received $95.8 million, with Orange County Public Schools receiving over $12 million and Seminole County Public Schools receiving nearly $1.7 million. Among the colleges and universities in Murphy’s district, the University of Central Florida has already received almost $2 million and Seminole State has received nearly $110,000. “I’m so pleased that my initiative will send critical federal funds to Valencia College to help defray the costs of taking in displaced students from Puerto Rico and other disaster-stricken areas,” said Murphy. “Valencia joins numerous other K-12 schools and colleges in central Florida in getting the help they need to support their entire student population. It’s clear that investments in education such as this one, which I worked hard to secure, will help grow our overall economy, create jobs, and improve the quality of life in our community.”
“The staff and faculty of Valencia College stretched themselves to serve every displaced student we encountered from Puerto Rico and elsewhere who were affected by the hurricane and its aftermath. It was a privilege to do so. And we are further privileged, through the efforts of U.S. Representative Murphy, to receive additional resources which we will reinvest in all of our students,” said Valencia College President Dr. Sandy Shugart. In total, 13 colleges and universities in Florida have received nearly $6.5 million to date as a result of Murphy’s initiative, far more than any other state. In addition to UCF, Valencia College and Seminole State College, the following Florida schools have applied for and received funding: Broward College, College of Central Florida, Daytona State College, Eastern Florida State College, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Indian River State College, Santa Fe College, St. Thomas University, and University of South Florida. Murphy spearheaded the effort to support students and schools over the course of nearly a year, working across party lines with the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), her colleagues in the U.S. House and Senate, the U.S. Department of Education, and the State of Florida. In February 2018, Congress approved the Bipartisan Budget Act, which enacted Murphy’s initiative into law.
