Jim Welsh, de KUA, fue nombrado Gran Mariscal del Kissimmee Holiday Parade Kissimmee, FL – El pasado sábado ,8 de diciembre se celebró el Desfile del Festival de las Luces en el centro de Kissimmee. El presidente retirado de Kissimmee Utility Authority y gerente general Jim Welsh fue nombrado gran mariscal del Desfile.

Retiring Kissimmee Utility Authority president and general manager Jim Welsh was named grand marshal of the Festival. Welsh has served as head of Kissimmee’s electric utility since 1982, guiding it through the most significant period of growth in its 117-year history. Welsh will retire from the utility on March 31, 2019. Each

year, the City of Kissimmee selects its parade grand marshal(s) by identifying residents of Osceola County who have displayed outstanding pride and commitment to the community through volunteerism and/or service above and beyond their normal call of duty. The parade traveled north on Ruby Ave, east on Broadway, south on Dakin Ave. and west on Lakeview Drive. Welsh led the parade aboard a 1928 fire truck, alongside his 5-year-old grandson.

Osceola County Commissioners select new chair, and vice chair Condado Osceola, FL - County Commissioners selected Cheryl Grieb as Chairwoman of the Osceola Board of County Commissioners for the upcoming year on Monday, effective immediately.

Grieb represents Osceola County District 4, which includes portions of the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud.

First elected to County office in 2014, Grieb has served on numerous boards, including her current appointment as Osceola County representative and Chairwoman of MetroPlan. “It is an honor to be selected to lead this Board for the coming year,” said Grieb. “And while I know as a community, we face many challenges, by working together we can continue to move Osceola County in the right direction.” During the same meeting, Viviana Janer

was selected Vice Chairwoman. “It is an honor to be elected by my fellow Commissioners as Vice Chairwoman once again,” said Janer “I look forward to working with Chairwoman Grieb and our Board to keep Osceola on the path to prosperity.”

As outgoing Commission Chairman, District 5 Commissioner Fred Hawkins, Jr. said he was proud of all that was accomplished. “Osceola County has mapped a strong course for its future by continuing to build lasting partnerships with business partners, academic institutions and governments across the state and region,” said Hawkins. “We continue to focus on public safety, education, transportation and economic development. This board works really well at seeking the best solutions for all of our citizens.”

City of Kissimmee News La Ciudad ofrecerá campamentos durante época festiva

Departamento de bomberos de Kissimmee comienza campaña Keep the Wreath Green Kissimmee, FL – El Departamento de Bomberos de la Ciudad de Kissimmee comienza oficialmente la campaña Keep the Wreath Green para educar a los residentes sobre las mejores prácticas durante esta época festiva.

Es una tradición el que todos los años el Departamento de Bomberos de Kissimmee coloque una guirnalda con bombillas verdes en cada estación.

Por cada fuego que ocurra una bombilla verde es intercambiada por una roja. Por cada bombero caído se cambiará una bombilla verde por una blanca. Para ayudar a mantener la guirnalda con las bombillas verdes

en las estaciones de bomberos de la Ciudad, el Departamento de Bomberos les exhorta a los residentes a seguir estas medidas de seguridad para estar seguros durante esta época de fiesta: • Compre un árbol natural que esté fresco y verdoso.

• Asegúrese que las luces del árbol estén apagadas cuando vaya a salir de la propiedad.

• Use luces o bombillas que estén autorizadas para su árbol.

• Mantenga las velas alejadas del árbol o cualquier artículo inflamable.

• Asegúrese apagar todas las velas antes de salir de la propiedad.

Kissimmee, FL – El Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Kissimmee ofrecerá un campamento de dos semanas durante la época festiva para estudiantes de kindergarten hasta quinto grado.

El Campamento Discovery estará cerrado ambos fines de semana. Los participantes se reunirán en el Berlinsky Community House ubicado en el 300 E. Monument Avenue. Durante ocho semanas los estudiantes serán parte de un sinnúmero de actividades y excursiones. Kissimmee fire department starts Keep the Wreath Green Campaign Kissimmee, FL – The City of Kissimmee Fire Department has officially kicked off its annual Keep the Wreath Green campaign to educate residents about best practices during the holiday season. Each year the City of Kissimmee Fire Department hangs a wreath filled with green light bulbs at each fire station. For every structure fire that units respond to a green bulb on the wreath is exchanged for a red bulb, and for every fallen firefighter another green bulb will be replaced with a white bulb. To help keep each holiday wreath green at all the City’s fire stations, the City of Kissimmee Fire Department is

encouraging all residents to follow these safety tips for a safe and fire free holiday season: • Purchase a holiday tree that is fresh and clean (if natural).

• Make sure the tree lights are off when a home is vacant/unattended.

• Use authorized/approved lights for the holiday tree.

• Keep candles away from holiday trees or any flammable items.

• Make sure to blow out candles before leaving the house.

City offering Discovery Holiday Camps Kissimmee, FL – The City of Kissimmee Parks & Recreation Department is offering a two-week Camp Discovery Holiday Camp for children in kindergarten through the 5th grade.

Week one begins on Wednesday, December 26 and ends on Monday, December 31. Week two begins on Wednesday, January 2 and ends on Monday, January 7. Camp Discovery is closed on both Saturday and Sunday during each camp week. Participants will meet at the Berlinsky Community House (300 E. Monument Avenue) for eight days of fun activities and field trips, which include visits to: • December 27 - Regal Cinemas: Mary Poppins • December 28 - Orlando Science Center • January 2 - Abracadabra Ice Cream Factory

Three Kings Day in Osceola Celebración del día de Reyes en Osceola Por Carina Calle Condado Osceola, FL – Por decimocuarto año consecutivo el Concilio Hispano de Negocios de la Cámara de Comercio del Condado Kissimmee/Osceola estará celebrando el Día de Reyes en Osceola. Festejado en muchos países del mundo y en la mayoría de América Latina, el Día de Reyes, es una festividad reconocida por diferentes culturas, como una manera de recordar a los Tres Reyes Magos, cuando trajeron sus regalos de oro, incienso y mirra al Niño Jesús. El pasado martes 11 de diciembre de 2018, los Tres Reyes entregaron un regalo adelantado en Osceola por parte del Concilio Hispano de Negocios y el Fondo de Becas de Herencia Hispana de Orlando (HHSFMO por sus siglas en inglés) se entregó una beca por $5,500 a los estudiantes. La celebración de los Tres Reyes tendrá lugar el domingo, 6 de enero de 2019 de 10:00 a.m. a 2:00 p.m. en Old Town ubicado en 5770 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy, Kissimmee, FL 34746. Alrededor de 8,000 personas, mayormente niños, con sus familias, asistieron al evento del año pasado. Three King’s day celebration in Osceola

By Carina Calle - Orlando FL - For the fourteenth year the Hispanic Business Council of the Kissimmee/ Osceola County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Three King’s Day in Osceola. Celebrated in many countries of the world and most of Latin America, the Three King’s Day, or “El Día de los Reyes” is a holiday recognized by different cultures, as a way to remember the three Wise Men or Kings, as they brought their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Baby Jesus. Last Tuesday, December 11, 2018, the Three Kings presented a gift in advance to Osceola from the Hispanic Business Council and the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Orlando (HHSFMO for its acronym in English) a scholarship for $5,500 was awarded to the students. The Three King’s Day celebration will take place on Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Old Town at 5770 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy, Kissimmee, FL 34746. Over 8,000 people, mostly children, with their families attended last year’s event and we anticipate that this year the number will be higher due to the many relocated families from Puerto Rico, Central and South America. All Central Florida community is welcomed to attend. Three King’s Day celebration will include: FREE BICYCLES: One of the most exciting moments for the kids at the event is the free raffle of a brand new bicycle every 5 minutes, over 100 bicycles will be given away.

Inmigración / Immigration New Hispanic Institute report details positive impact of immigrants in Iowa, Nevada

Nuevo informe del Instituto Hispano detalla el impacto positivo de los inmigrantes en Iowa y Nevada Washington - El Instituto Hispano (The Hispanic Institute, THI por sus siglas en inglés) publicó un informe sobre el impacto económico positivo de la inmigración, particularmente en dos estados de importancia política que con frecuencia no se consideran destinos para los inmigrantes. El informe, titulado “El Relato de Dos Estados: una Revisión del Impacto de la Inmigración en Iowa y Nevada”, incluye una breve historia de la política de inmigración de los Estados Unidos y una gran variedad de estadísticas sobre el impacto económico y demográfico de los inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. In Iowa, for example, immigrants account for just 5 percent of the population.

Yet they pay more than $1 billion in

taxes and boast $3 billion in spending power. Strong majorities of Iowans support pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. President Trump won the state in 2016, but 50 percent of Iowans do not support his call for a southern border wall.

Nevada's economy depends even more heavily on immigrants. They now account for nearly 20 percent of the state's population, up from 9 percent in 1990. Immigrant-led households pay nearly $3 billion in taxes and have about $10 billion in spending power. One-quarter of selfemployed Nevadans are immigrants.

El Condado Osceola logra ser parte del Calendario de FAC 2019 Condado Osceola, FL - El Condado Osceola figura como el mes de noviembre en el calendario de la Asociación de Condados (FAC por sus siglas en inglés) llamado: “La Vieja Florida (Old Florida)”. Utilizando los últimos avances tecnológicos para capturar una histórica vista, usaron un dron para tomar una vista aérea del Poblado Pionero (“Osceola County Pioneer Village”) localizado en Shingle Creek. Escenas del Condado Osceola han aparecido cuatro (4) veces en el calendario durante los últimos seis (6) años.

Mientras el Condado Osceola sigue encaminado hacia un futuro brillante, siempre tendremos nuestras raíces en el pasado y las tradiciones de aquellos pioneros que se establecieron aquí.

El Poblado de los Pioneros es un testamento a cómo se vivía en aquellos tiempos en nuestra comunidad y honramos esa historia y la fundación que provee para el mañana, dijo la presidenta de la Junta de Comisionados, Cheryl Grieb. “Estamos felices de que el FAC haya seleccionado esta foto para que nuestro condado pueda ser apreciado a través del estado.” El tema de este año fue escogido por los

¡Espero que todos hayan tenido una temporada navideña maravillosa!

Enero ya está aquí, y es un buen momento para evaluar nuestras ocupadas vidas y pensar en lo que queremos lograr proximamente.

Desde el punto de vista personal, mi objetivo como madre es asegurarme de que no me pierda las pequeñas cosas que mi única hija adolescente hace este año. Así es, mi pequeña cumple 13 años este mes y debo admitir que estoy un poco nerviosa. A veces siento que simplemente estamos corriendo por la vida y no estamos pasando suficiente tiempo de calidad con aquellos que más nos importan. Como esposa, hija, tía y hermana, espero hacer que los pequeños momentos cuenten.

Profesionalmente como Comisionada, continuaré expresando las preocupaciones de la gente y la política de sentido común a la comisión, incluso cuando no sea políticamente correcta. Esto no es común en nuestra comisión de status-quo, pero yo he sido elegida por la gente, y siempre los pondré a ellos PRIMERO, incluso si mis compañeros miembros de la junta no siempre están de acuerdo conmigo. Seguiré abriendo mi puerta a los ciudadanos de nuestro condado que deseen participar y aprender sobre nuestras políticas, desafíos y cambios. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! January is already here, and it is a great time to evaluate our busy lives and think about what we want to accomplish next. On the personal side, my goal as a parent is to be sure I don’t miss the little things my one and only teenager does this year. That’s right - my little one turns 13 years old this month and I must admit, I am a little nervous.

I feel sometimes that we are just rushing through life and not spending enough quality time with those who matter most. As a wife, daughter, auntie, and sister, I look forward to making the small moments count.

Professionally as a Commissioner, I will continue voicing the concerns of the people and common-sense policy to the commission, even when it is not popular or politicly correct. This is not common in our status-quo commission, but I have been elected by the people and I will always put them FIRST - even if my fellow board members don’t always agree with me. I will continue to open my door to citizens in our county that want to participate and learn about our policies, challenges, and changes.

I’ve implemented many opportunities for citizens to get involved since I took office. For example, I’ve worked to create the Citizens’ Committee, Small Business Committee, Homeless Committee, held numerous town hall meetings and even launched a YouTube channel. I will also continue to have volunteers and interns in my office. If you are interested in volunteering or joining any of the committees, please contact me.

New and continuing priorities list - Manageable Growth: Worked with the board and staff to implement new standards that will hold developers accountable when creating housing to guarantee quality products for current and future Osceola County residents.

- Affordable Housing: I have stressed to the board the importance of offering housing diversity in our community. Things like tiny homes, container homes, shared homes and studio living are just some of the options that I believe can help serve the needs of our residents more effectively and affordably.

- Roads in District 1: I’m happy to report that this past year we have worked on long overdue resurfacing as well as sidewalk and street improvements in many communities around the district. This is just the beginning, much more re-surfing is coming in 2019.

- Transportation: The county began discussing road expansions and bus rapid transit in our county long before I arrived. Since I took office, I have been requesting that our commission look at alternative mass transit/public transit and change how we think about connectivity. Our future generation is VERY different, and they will expect different transportation options. Who would have thought that we would be able to share bikes, scooters and even cars to get to our destinations? Who would have ever

- Homelessness: I’m happy to report that I’ve been working closely with Captain Ken Chapman to launch an Emergency Resource Center to help our families and individuals who are homeless or who are at risk of becoming homeless. We are collaborating to begin fundraising efforts soon, so stay tune for more information on this throughout the year. If you want to participate, please contact me and come to one of our homeless committee meetings.

- Our Safety and Security: This year for the first time the Sheriff’s Office will have School Resources Officers (SROs) in every public school. This is a start in making our kids safe. Our Sheriff has also increased officers this year to help provide more street patrol and protection. We have also joined HOA, CDD and town hall meetings together to help collaborate with any safety issues within our community. If you would like us to join one of your meetings in District 1, please contact me via email. We want to work together to make sure we are all safe at home, at work and at our places of entertainment.

- Protecting Natural Resources: Protecting our natural resources and making sure we continue to be unique with our eco-tourism is very important to me. I have voiced my opposition to destroying our treasures in our county since day one. For example, I will continue to defend and protect Split Oak for future generations. As community leaders, we must do what we promise to our public and find manageable and responsible ways of growing and implementing roads and developments.

Regarding tax increases, please know that I generally oppose any tax increases or additional fees. I really don’t want to do any of the increases until we as a county tighten our belts and begin to put our tax dollars into the daily necessities for our tax payers and not so much into projects that are not bringing a return on our investment. I do have some worries in our budget and expenditures, and hope that this year we can find a way to spend our tax dollars more wisely. Sheriff & Police - Noticias / News Robo a mano armada / sospechosos de hacerse pasar por policías, arrestados Condado Osceola, FL - El 5 de diciembre de 2018, aproximadamente a las 6:55 P.M., oficiales respondieron al área de 4636 W Irlo Bronson Highway; Plaza de Sevilla, en referencia a un reportaje de un robo a mano armada. Armed Robbery / Impersonating Law Enforcement Suspects arrested Osceola County, FL - On December 5, 2018, at approximately 6:55 P.M., deputies responded to the area of 4636 W Irlo Bronson Highway; Sevilla Plaza, in reference to a report of an armed robbery. Deputies contacted the victim, who advised he thought he was going to meet up with a female he met on a mobile dating app. When the victim exited the store, three males posing as law enforcement approached him, one pulled out a handgun and told him he was under arrest. The victim believed the men and complied with their requests. The men made the victim escort them to his hotel room nearby, where they demanded money from him. The suspects then fled the scene in an unknown dark colored

vehicle. On December 12, 2018, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Robbery Unit located and arrested Kenneth Waldrop, Adam Zsiga and Terry Brown for their role in the armed robbery that took place on December 05, 2018. Zsiga was located in Lake County and Waldrop was arrested in Osceola County. Detectives learned the victim was specifically targeted by the suspects. Detectives received several tips from the community that helped in identifying the suspects.

All three suspects have been charged with armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, kidnapping, grand theft and Impersonating a LEO.

Operación “Nacho Stuff” Condado Osceola, FL - La Operación "Nacho Stuff" fue una operación de "anzuelo" realizada por la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola, el Departamento de Policía de Kissimmee y el Departamento de Policía de St. Cloud. Operation “Nacho Stuff” Osceola County, FL - Operation “Nacho Stuff” was a multi-agency “bait” operation that consisted of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Kissimmee Police Department, and St. Cloud Police Department. The objective of the operation was to arrest suspects committing conveyance burglaries and other thefts. The operation took place on December 6 & 7, 2018, in popular shopping areas across Osceola County. The two-day operation resulted in 10 arrests for crimes ranging from Burglary and Grand Theft to Petit theft and Conspiracy to commit Burglary. There were also 63 Good Samaritans, which attempted to

get the property to the rightful owner.

Grand theft auto and burglary to conveyance arrests Osceola County, FL - On December 6, 2018, at 3:00 A.M., deputies responded to the area of Lonesome Dove Drive in Kissimmee, in reference to a report of a burglary to a vehicle and theft of a vehicle. The victim reported hearing a vehicle in their driveway start and when they looked outside, they observed a male wearing a black mask with skull markings covering his face, and a gray hoodie standing next to a vehicle in the driveway. The suspects stole the vehicle and deputies responding were alerted of the stolen vehicle’s description. Through effective patrol measures, deputies located the stolen vehicle which was still being driven by the suspects. Deputies were able to stop the vehicle and arrest the suspects responsible. Based on evidence and additional investigation, deputies were able to link theses suspects to 4 additional burglaries to vehicles that were committed prior to them stealing

the vehicle they were detained in. The two suspects arrested were identified as; Jessie Dunn 05-10-98 and Matthew Maldonado DOB 10-07-01. La Universidad de Florida Central celebra ceremonias de graduación en otoño de 2018, del 14 al 15 de diciembre Orlando, FL – El presidente de UCF, Dale Whittaker, se unirá la Representante de los Estados Unidos, Stephanie Murphy, abogada de Orlando, y el ex presidente de la Junta de Fideicomisarios de la UCF, Michael J. Magic Focused on Bouncing Back During Trip in Mexico

By John Denton / Orlando Magic - Mexico City - Whereas some look at a Mexican retreat as an exotic place to escape to, detach from the occasionally harsh realities of the daily grind and blow off some steam, the Orlando Magic are viewing their journey south of the U.S. border as an all-business trip that will hopefully save their season. Losers of three straight – two of which have come in humbling fashion – the Magic (12-15) know that they have hit a critical juncture in their season.

Now, they are casting their eyes toward Mexico as a place where they might have some relief in the form of a couple of muchneeded victories. Not only are the Magic competing in the Mexico City Games 2018, they are considered the ``home team’’ for games against the Chicago Bulls (Thursday, 9:30 p.m. ET) and Utah Jazz (Saturday, 5 p.m. ET).

These will be the 27th and 28th NBA games ever played in Mexico and the eighth and ninth regularseason games played there. Since 1992, 23 NBA teams will have played games in Mexico. For a Magic franchise that has played games in London (twice), Japan, China and Brazil, it will be their second trip to Mexico. The Magic opened their 2012 preseason schedule in Mexico City against the then-New Orleans Hornets.

The team travelled from Dallas to Mexico City on Tuesday and on Wednesday it will practice and take part in an NBA Cares event prior to facing the slumping Bulls on Thursday. While the focus is clearly on playing well in the two games ahead many of the Magic players look at the trip as a chance to take in another culture and help to spread the love for the game of basketball around the globe.

Added Vucevic, the Magic’s only remaining player from that 2012 trip to Mexico City that proved to be his first-ever game in an Orlando uniform. Orlando is hoping to give those fans a better product to see than the one they put out in the previous two games. After losing a heartbreaking overtime decision to Denver last Wednesday, the Magic were popped 112-90 by Indiana on Friday. On Monday, the Magic were without standout guard Evan Fournier (private family matter) and Bamba and they predictably fell flat against the surging Mavericks and hotshot rookie Luka Doncic. In that game, Orlando set a season low for points (76) and tied a franchise record for fewest free throw attempts in a game (five).

Vucevic, Orlando’s leading scorer and leading rebounder all season, had one of his worst game of the season at a bad time. Facing DeAndre Jordan, he made just four of 15 shots, whiffed on his only 3-point attempt and had only eight points to go with his 16 rebounds.

Afterward, he shouldered much of the blame for Orlando’s ugly effort.

Vucevic, who desperately wants the Magic to make a playoff run following six long years of rebuilding, knows that a lot could be riding on how Orlando responds to its latest bit of adversity. Early in the season, the Magic suffered through a fourgame skid that dropped them to 2-6 and threatened their hopes.

They responded by beating San Antonio and Cleveland and ripping off a run of seven victories in a nine-game stretch. Vucevic was the driving force in that stretch, even winning the Eastern Conference’s Player of the Week award after Orlando impressively whipped the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks on back-toback nights.

Wisin & Yandel Como Antes Tour 2019 Orlando, FL – Latin music’s most iconic reggaeton duo, Wisin & Yandel, announced their first U.S. tour since their five-year hiatus with the Como Antes Tour 2019. Wisin & Yandel recently announced their first album in over five years, “Los Campeones del Pueblo” (“The people's champions”). It marks their 10th studio album and the first one they have recorded together since the multi-award-winning album, “Líderes” (“Leaders”).
