You change people’s lives – for generations…

It is true that coming changes in MLS, buyer agency requirements, national lawsuit settlements, and more are indeed big things worthy of our attention. And yet, are we missing something bigger? More important? Are we missing an essential element of what we as Realtors promote, support, and provide?

Yes. It is our long and steadfast commitment as Realtors to home ownership.

We are so close to, and so involved in, the details of the process for home ownership that we can forget the powerful importance of home ownership which we help bring to our customers, our clients, our community, and our country.

Consider…

• Homeowners build a net worth about 40 times higher than that of renters according to research by NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. Homeownership is the greatest store of wealth – many times accounting for over 60% of U.S. households according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And homeownership creates a store of value that can be passed to future generations.

• Homeownership data research from the University of North Carolina and the National Institutes of Health have documented benefits including enhanced life satisfaction, better psychological health, greater life expectancy, higher rates of civic involvement, and better school performance among children.

• Homeownership studies by HUD and Habitat for Humanity show even more positive social impacts. Improved health outcomes, increased self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of belonging. This leads to economic stability for families and their communities, and the stronger connection to their community fosters feelings of social support and camaraderie. There is a profound sense of accomplishment and security in owning a home. It touches on something deeply rooted in human psychology which cannot be understated.

You – yes you – are the guide to help customers and clients reap these positive effects of homeownership. This is what you help to do every day, every week, every month, all year. Never ever underestimate or undervalue the vital importance of what you do.
