LEADERSHIP IS THAT YOUR CALLING?
IN THIS ISSUE:
LEADERSHIP: "THE ART OF MOTIVATING A GROUP OF PEOPLE TO ACT TOWARDS ACHIEVING A COMMON GOAL" - SUSAN WARD
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2 0 1 8 PRESIDENT
One of my favorite definitions of a LEADER is found in an article for The Balance by Susan Ward; "THE ART OF MOTIVATING A GROUP OF PEOPLE TO ACT TOWARDS ACHIEVING A COMMON GOAL". So simply put, and so very true. Being a leader does not always mean being the one with all of the ideas. RECOGNIZING the value of an idea, and being able to IMPLEMENT those ideas successfully through a group of people united by common goals, are strong indicators that you would be a successful leader. Great leaders will always LEAD BY EXAMPLE, if you find yourself stepping up when others may not, you may be leaning towards leadership. When you are able to see leadership abilities in others, and ENCOURAGE them to their greatest potential, you are showing leadership. Other characteristics of leadership are: Believing in yourself, being CONFIDANT enough in your own decisions, yet being OPEN-MINDED to the ideas of others. Being willing to make SACRIFICES, most often of your time. Being HONEST and TRUSTWORTHY. Having COURAGE - to stand your ground as well as the HUMILITY to admit when .
you're wrong. Having courage - to take chances on the unknown. To step out in a leap of faith to bring an idea to fruition. And, then the ability to COMMUNICATE your ideas to others in a way that ignites them with your same passion. If you found any of this to sound familiar, I would encourage you to explore your own leadership abilities. I would challenge you to put your leadership skills to use in your association. OSCAR has many committees to become active in, and subsequently, if qualified, a committee chair, or vice chair. Once having actively served on a committee you may be eligible to apply to become a Director. Elected OSCAR Directors must be prepared for a commitment of a three year term, and have completed the Association Leadership Program. From there, you may decide to apply for the Executive Committee, apply for a Florida Realtors Directors position, or apply for a NAR (National Association of REALTORS®) Director's position. The opportunities to exercise your leadership skills abound in your Osceola County REALTORS® Association. Get connected with your current leadership to find out how to best plan for your path in leadership! Working together - making a difference for our members and our community, "there ain't no stopping us now!" -Be blessed.
RPAC SILENT AUCTION HAPPENING MARCH 12TH-16TH
The REALTORS® Political Action Committee is our connection to legislators and our personal advocacy arm, ensuring an equitable market for us to participate in. That’s why it’s so important to support our PAC. Many members choose to do their fair share contribution of $20 each year, but there are more exciting ways to participate in supporting RPAC. For instance, from March 12th through March 16th, we’ll be hosting an online silent auction to raise funds for RPAC. In this way, you can support the PAC while bidding on fun items for your home or leisure. We’ll have a variety to select from starting on the 12th. And after the auction closes at 7pm on the 16th, items will be available for pick up at the Association. If you would like to take part in this silent auction, visit www.501auctions.com/oscarauction during the dates listed starting Monday. Contributions are not deductible for income tax purposes. Contributions to RPAC are voluntary and are used for political purposes. You may refuse to contribute without reprisal and the National Association of REALTORS® or any of its state associations or local boards will not favor or disfavor any member because of the amount contributed. No purchase necessary to win. 70% of each contribution is used by your state PAC to support state and local political candidates. Until your state reaches its RPAC goal, 30% is sent to National RPAC to upport federal candidates and is charged against your limits under 2 U.S. C. 411a; after the state PAC reaches its RPAC goal it may elect to retain your entire contribution for use in supporting state and local candidates. CIPS INSTITUTE: YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS IN INTERNATIONAL SALES THERESA O’DAUGHERTY 2018 CHAIR OF THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE COMMITTEE Central Florida is a magnet for international real estate investment. Between the years of 2013 and 2017, foreign buyers were responsible for contributing an average of $104 Billion in dollar volume to the U.S. residential market, and Florida remains a top destination for that investment. Between 2012 and 2016, our state took in $18.1 Billion on average, and here in the Kissimmee/Orlando metro area, foreign investment is roughly 10% of local sales. It takes a certain set of skills to be able to cater to the needs of international buyers, which is why the Global Alliance Committee works hard to educate interested REALTOR® members about the ins and outs of brokering foreign transactions. Each year the Global Alliance Committee presents guest speakers to talk on various aspects of working in international real estate sales and provides networking opportunities to help you form valuable connections who can help you in this lucrative niche market. And it is lucrative! International clients typically purchase homes with median prices exceeding domestic purchases by anywhere from $125,000 to $250,000, and they represent a larger share of homes that were purchased at a price over $1,000,000. Plus, foreign buyers are more likely to pay in cash.
But attending committee events isn’t the only way you can tap into this market. Another way you can educate yourself on this particular segment of buyers would be to pursue a CIPS designation. Starting September 24th, OSCAR will be bringing back the Certified International Property Specialist Institute, a five-day series of courses that will focus on multiple foreign buying topics which will grow your expertise in international sales. Topics include: Currency and exchange rate issues; Cross-cultural relationships; Regional market conditions; Investment performance, and Tax issues. Not only will foreign buyers seek out your specialized skills to help them with their transaction, but you will also gain access to the members only CIPS network, a group of over 3,500 real estate agents spread over 45 countries, and you will be listed on NAR’s CIPS Directory. It’s not too early to sign up now. Log in to OSCAR’s website to register for these classes or call 407-846-0117. And if you have questions about the CIPS designation, please contact us at 407-846-0117. Your success in the international market awaits! Get started by signing up for the CIPS Institute today!
EARN CE CREDITS WHILE HELPING YOUR ASSOCIATION!
CAN YOU VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME TO HELP THE ASSOCIATION? OSCAR is putting out a call to its members seeking volunteers to act as monitors during CE courses at the Association. As you may already know, continuing education credits are awarded only to members who attend a full class. While short breaks are allowed, missing 15 minutes or more will disqualify an attendee from receiving their credits. A monitor’s job is to sign members in and out for these short breaks and assess the total time missed. In the near future, we will be hosting a Monitor Training Class to instruct volunteers how to preside over OSCAR classes and ensure that everyone who receives CE credits are qualified to receive them. Monitors not only perform a valued service to the Association, but also
receive CE credits for the courses they oversee. This includes classes that require fees, which OSCAR will waive for their service. “Monitoring classes is a wonderful way to participate in the Association while furthering education goals,” stated James WIlliams III, Professional Development Chair at OSCAR. “Our volunteer monitors have the opportunity to work directly with Instructors and Association staff to provide a professional classroom environment while taking an active and much appreciated role in our board.” If you are interested in attending the our upcoming Monitor Training Course, which is required to be a classroom monitor, contact us at 407-846-0117 or watch for emails from us to register. Our volunteer members are a vital part of our success at OSCAR. We hope to see you in our training class!

OSCAR REALTORS® CARE COMMITTEE PARTNERS WITH IDIGNITY TO HELP THE HOMELESS OSCAR makes community outreach a pillar of its mission statement, which outlines a dedication to member success through professional development, advocacy, and community engagement. The Association does so by supporting causes that improve and enrich the community and by helping improve access to homeownership. Recently, members of the OSCAR REALTORS® Care Committee volunteered their time to assist the homeless by partnering with IDignity, an organization that helps people on the streets get access to identifying documents.
Earlier this month, REALTOR® volunteers gathered for a drive to help homeless individuals obtain items like social security cards, birth certificates, and ID cards which are a
necessity to gain entry into schools or work positions. Without documents like these, people are unable to open bank accounts or even get access to shelters. Charlie DeCarlo, Chair of the REALTORS® Care Committee felt like this was an important effort to get behind, saying, “People who
don’t have access to these types of documents are essentially barred from taking the necessary steps to turn their life around. Acquiring these documents is an important first step to improving their situation.” IDignity has drives throughout the year to benefit the homeless. If you would like to volunteer for an upcoming event, visit their website at https://idignity.org/join-us/ or call 407-792-1374, ext. 11 to inquire about future schedulings. ••••••••••
