Exit Strategy Deze term uit de hedendaagse oorlogsvoering vormt het uitgangspunt voor een aantal sculpturale verkenningen die sinds 2007 zijn gerealiseerd. Hoe verhoudt dit begrip zich tot alles wat we aangaan en waarin we ons begeven, hoe verhoudt het dagelijkse leven zich tot zoiets als een ‘Exit Strategy’? Binnen deze reeks werken blijkt de botsing tussen objectief gedefinieerde werkelijkheid (glazen, deuren, zalen) en de fysieke beleving er van een ontregelende psychologische uitbreiding te krijgen. Tevens vormt de relatie tussen werkelijkheid en waarneming en tussen in- en outsiderpositie een verbindend element. In ‘Exit Strategy 4’ is bijvoorbeeld de onbestemde ruimte geheel bedekt met verpakkingskarton.

Exit Strategy This expression from modern warfare forms the starting point for an array of sculptural explorations, realised since 2007. In what way is this expression related to everything we encounter or embark on. How is daily life related to something called ‘Exit Strategy’? Within these works, the confrontation between an objective defined reality (glasses, doors, rooms) and the physical perception of it appears to get a disorienting psychological extension. The relation between reality and perception and between the insider-outsider position also forms a binding element. In ‘Exit Strategy 4’ for instance the undefined space is covered with used cardboard.

Drie identieke dubbele deuren, ook in karton, voegen zich naar de maten van de ruimte. Eenmaal binnen, ervaart de bezoeker zich uitvergroot in verhouding tot de omringende architectuur. De ruimte blijkt zo een plek te zijn waarin alles een herijking ondergaat. ‘Exit Strategy 5’ zet dit traject verder voort. De zeer kleine, bijna claustrofobische, ruimte wordt geheel met papier bedekt. Naast de twee reeds aanwezige deuren en het venster wordt een vierde, nu textuele, mogelijkheid van ontsnapping aangebracht, een uit fragmenten hout samengestelde tekst: ‘from here on a vast expanse will take it all over’. De fysiek beklemmende werkelijkheid van de plek krijgt zo een mentale uitbreiding via een onbegrensd verschiet.

Three identical double doors, also made out of cardboard, adjust to the measurements of the space. Once inside,the visitor experiences oneself enlarged in relation to the surrounding architecture. The space appears to be a place in which everything undergoes a re-evaluation. ‘Exit Strategy 5’ continues this course further. The very small, almost claustrofobic, space is being covered in white paper. Alongside the two doors and the window a fourth, and now textual, possibillity of escape is being added. A text, composed out of fragments wood, can be read as: ‘from here on a vast expanse will take it all over’. The physical oppressive reality of the place acquires a mental extension through a unlimited perspective.
Lost in Space
Lost in Space Een jaar na ‘Exit Strategy 5’ is het gebouw van ‘Borrowed Spaces’ nogmaals onderwerp voor een ruimtelijke ingreep. Voor de groepsexpositie ‘The Place, The Space’ geldt nu dat het gehele gebouw is verlaten en alle ruimten leeg zijn. Uit diverse tijdschriften en kranten snij ik letters die ik vervolgens samenvoeg tot één statement. Deze ongelijksoortige letters worden dan in paarsrode dodekop aangebracht in elf verschillende ruimten door het hele gebouw. Een wandeling door het gebouw verbind de afzonderlijke letters tot een leesbare zin. In fysieke zin worden taal en ruimte hier opnieuw samengebracht. Zoals wel vaker het geval is, voltrekt inzicht zich soms stapsgewijs en wisselen dissociatie en associatie zich net zo vlot af als verspreiden en verzamelen.

Lost in Space A year after ‘Exit Strategy 5’ was realised, the building of ‘Borrowed Spaces’ became once more the subject of a spatial intervention. For the exhibition ‘The Place,The Space’ the building is completely deserted and all spaces are empty. Out of various magazines and newspapers, I cut letters that are subsequently united into one statement. These disparate letters in purple-red caput mortuum then are placed in eleven different spaces throughout the whole building. A walk through this building unites the separate letters into a readable sentence. As is often the case, insight sometimes occurs step by step and dissociation and association alternate as quickly as spreading and collecting.
