Join educators from the Milwaukee Public Museum and unwrap the secrets of mummification, find out why it was so important in ancient Egypt, and become an attendant as you help adorn and wrap a model mummy of your own through this interactive program.

This event is open to students entering first through fifth grade and registration is required. Don’t wait to sign up for either the 2:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. presentation at the library; seats are limited.

Oscar Grady Public Library Mission Statement:

The mission of the Oscar Grady Public Library is to provide high interest, high demand materials and make them readily available from the Library’s collection or through interlibrary loan. The Library supports lifelong learning, information and recreational needs for people of all ages and abilities. Jen Gerber, our Library Director, would like to recommend the following title:

The Circus Fire by Stewart O’Nan The author of A Prayer for the Dying brings all his narrative gifts to bear on this gripping account of tragedy and heroism-the great Hartford circus fire of 1944.

Halfway through a midsummer afternoon performance, Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus's big top caught fire. The tent had been waterproofed with a mixture of paraffin and gasoline; in seconds it was burning out of control, and more than 8,000 people were trapped inside. Hope H-M. would like to recommend this title:

The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan 1942 Great Britain. The BBC radio program, The Kitchen Front, is holding a three round contest to find the first female host for the program. The planners want there to be a range of women: a manor house cook, a restaurant chef, a cooking demonstrator, and a housewife. Round one will consist of a starter, what we today call an appetizer. Round two will be a main course. Round three will be a dessert. Each contestant could only use their own rations. Since the program was seeking a female host, each contestant should also be able to speak well about their presentation. Extra points would be awarded if the cook could use their rations in an ingenious way.

At the end of each round, Ambrose, the current male host, would reward points and at the end of round three the cook with the most points would be declared the winner. Each cook was to prepare their dish at home and bring it under a silver dome to keep it hot.

The four women: Lady Gwendolyn was the billeting officer, sister of Audrey and married to Sir Reggie Strickland. Sir Strickland owned beef factories in other countries and also owned the Finley Pie Factory here in Great Britain.

Audrey was a widowed mother of three boys who lived in the house left to her by her parents. She and her husband had taken along from her sister, lady Gwendolyn, when money ran short. Her husband was killed in active duty.

Nell with a kitchen maid to Mrs. Quince, the elderly cook at Fenley Hall, the home of Sir and Lady Strickland. Mrs. Quince is known for her outstanding cooking skills. Nell is quite shy and find speaking to others difficult.

Zelda is the head chef at the Fenley Pie Factory. He had formally been the deputy head chef at London's Dartington Hotel before it was bombed by the Germans. She is single and hiding her pregnancy so as not to lose her job. She is also seeking a change in residency from the billeting officer as the landlord is extremely rude to her due to the pregnancy.

As you can see, the four women contestants are connected in various ways. The book is about the lives of these four women and the rations of food at this time in Great Britain. There are many twists and turns throughout the story. I was thoroughly hooked by this book. It turned out to be a book I would highly recommend.

Katie Elzer-Peters is a horticulturist who writes gardening books, blogs, and articles. A resident of Wilmington, North Carolina, she also teaches classes and runs workshops dedicated to gardening and garden writing. She has a master of science in public garden management and has published several renowned books with Cool Springs Press. Description from publisher.

Next time you visit us, inquire about our 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN. This ongoing early literacy program encourages families and caregivers to read 1,000 books aloud with their young children before they enter Kindergarten. Any child from birth until he/ she starts Kindergarten is eligible to register.

Reading together helps your child develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid reading foundation – a key to scholastic and learning success.

Martin would like to recommend this title:

Operation MINCEMEAT by Ben Macintyre Stories about intelligence operations can not get better than this one!

Recently regaining notoriety by the Netflix making of the movie version of this true (and unbelievable) story, OPERATION MINCEMEAT tells the story of a plan by British forces during WW2 so well planned, conceived and even so far fetched, that it did indeed alter the course of the war.

The idea? Deceive the Axis forces to make them believe that a first allied invasion of Europe was to occur in Greece instead of Italy.

How to achieve this? Drop a dead body in the Mediterranean; stuff a suitcase full of fake documents and let the Germans find both and let them bite the bait and by doing so, set in motion one of the most audacious stories of counterespionage in the history of WW2 that will keep you turning pages like a good thriller does, except that this one is a real story.

Also, worth mentioning is the fact that this story was taken to the big screen back in 1955 under the title The Man Who Never Was; a superb film that has aged fairly decent when it comes to the main aspects of the story and its portray.

I’ll highly recommend this story (book and/or movie) to anyone interested in covert operations, a good thriller or simply learn a little lesson on those obscure aspects of history that are stranger than fiction.

Rita would like to recommend these titles:

Don’t be Trashy: A Practical Guide to Living with Less Waste and More Joy (2022) by Tara McKenna is an informative and inspirational book that will hopefully inspire readers to thoughtfully examine their consumption, create personal low-waste goals that are achievable while living in the real world, and undertake changes that can be maintained successfully in the long term.

McKenna has divided the book into 12 chapters, and she suggests reading the whole book first, then taking a month to enact the changes in each chapter. After a year, readers should have much progress to celebrate!

Do you need financial inspiration to read this book?

McKenna asserts, “low-waste living isn’t intended to be expensive and should actually save you money” (Chapter 10) She quotes The Minimalists, “’Everything is 100% off if you don’t buy it.’” (Chapter 2) McKenna does not offer a cookie-cutter approach to living with less waste. Instead, she has readers identify their personal goals for reducing consumption, clutter, and waste.

She then offers strategies and resources for thoughtfully finding new homes for unwanted things as well as for sustaining a low-consumption/low-waste lifestyle.

Here are some tips in Don’t be Trashy on how to reduce impulse shopping and consumption: 1) Keep a wish list. If you see something you want to buy, add it to the list and think about it for a few days to see if you really need it. 2) Avoid stores that are likely to inspire you to buy impulsively.

If you must go in them, get in, get what you need, and get out ASAP. 3) Don’t spent hours online scrolling through your favorite products, and don’t spend hours watching shopping channels 4) Develop a sense of your own style so you won’t be chasing trends.

If you are looking for ways to reduce your impact on the planet, this book is thought-provoking and might provide the motivation you need to begin your journey. And, gee, if it could save you a bit of money and de-clutter your home at the same time, think of the joy that would be added to your life!

Steven would like to recommend this title:

Nancy Drew, TV SERIES on DVD Nancy Drew is a favorite teenage sleuth, but have you ever wondered what it would look like if she went up against supernatural forces? Three years ago The CW provided us with just that. After just wrapping up its third season and already renewed for a fourth, this version of Nancy Drew is unbelievable.

It has plot twists that you will never see coming and the supernatural aspect adds a new layer of complexity. Unlike previous adaptations, Nancy is trying to solve one overall mystery each season, but ends up having to solve individual cases that end up tying into the overall mystery. Each season is a continuation of the previous season, so I highly recommend watching them in order.
