The Sunny Side Where do we begin? The summer term has been packed with exciting opportunities, memorable events and, of course, plenty of sunshine! From tennis, athletics, cricket, golf and swimming, to two fantastic Sports Days and our House Swimming Galas, pupils have embraced every opportunity to be active, challenge themselves and work together.

Our school community has also come together through wholeschool assemblies, the Parents vs Staff Cricket Match, the everpopular OPPA Summer Fete, and of course the spectacular Summer Concert, all of which have helped strengthen the sense of belonging that is so important for wellbeing.

One of the highlights of the term has been the chance for pupils to create lasting memories with friends on residential experiences, including Year 6 Enrichment Week, the Year 7 Normandy Trip and the Year 8 Ardèche Adventure. These experiences build confidence, independence, resilience and friendships that last well beyond the trip itself.

As we look ahead to September, we are delighted to celebrate the opening of our wonderful new OrWellbeing Hub, bringing together our Life Skills Classroom, Learning Enrichment Centre and Day Surgery in one dedicated space to support every pupil's wellbeing and success. We can't wait to see it fully in action next term!

Each month, the OrWellbeing team will share tips, ideas, and guidance to help us all try to navigate the digital world safely.

At Orwell Park, we want pupils to enjoy technology, know how to use it wisely while keeping themselves happy, healthy, and safe.

Screens over the summer: finding a healthy balance The summer holidays are a brilliant chance for children to rest, play, be outside, see friends, get bored, be creative and, realistically, spend time on screens.

The research picture is nuanced. The UK Chief Medical Officers have previously advised that there is not enough evidence to set one simple daily screen-time limit for all children and young people. Instead, they encourage families to look at the whole child: are they sleeping well, moving their bodies, spending time with others, keeping up with hobbies, and managing their mood? Ofcom’s recent research shows why this matters. Nearly four in ten children aged 8–17 say their screen time is too high. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health also highlights concerns around online harms, persuasive design features and the way apps and games are deliberately built to keep children engaged.

This can become more difficult in the summer holidays because the usual rhythm of school disappears. Without the structure and school routines, children can slide into longer sessions of gaming, scrolling or video watching. That does not mean parents need to ban screens entirely. In fact, a calm and realistic approach often works better than sudden strict rules, which can create arguments and make screens feel even more desirable!

A helpful starting point is to agree a summer screen routine, rather than negotiating from scratch every day. Children often cope better when they know what to expect.

For example, families might decide that mornings begin screen-free until children are dressed, have eaten breakfast and have done something active, helpful or creative.

Screens might then be used at agreed times, with a clear end point. For older children, involving them in the plan is important: “What feels reasonable?” “What do you think is too much?” “How will you know when you need a break?”

It can also help to protect a few screen-free “anchors” in the day. These might include mealtimes, the hour before bed, short car journeys, dog walks, family activities or time with friends. The bedtime boundary is particularly important because sleep is one of the clearest areas where excessive or late-night screen use can cause difficulties.

Charging phones, tablets and gaming devices outside bedrooms overnight is a simple change that can make a significant difference.

Online Safety Continued Parents may also want to think about the type of screen time. A video call with grandparents, a coding project, a film watched together, a photography challenge or a recipe video followed by real cooking is very different from hours of solitary scrolling. One useful family phrase is: create before you consume. Before passive screen time, children could be encouraged to make something, move their body, read, help with a job, practise music, build, draw, cook or go outside.

For younger children, visual routines can work well: “first lunch, then garden, then iPad”. For older children, a more collaborative approach is usually better. They are more likely to respond to being trusted than controlled, although they still need boundaries. It is reasonable to say, “We are not anti-screen, but we are pro-sleep, pro-fresh air, pro-friendship and pro-real life.”

A few practical ideas for the summer: Agree screen times in advance, rather than deciding in the heat of the moment.

Keep bedrooms as screen-free as possible, especially overnight.

Build in daily movement before longer screen sessions.

Use parental controls, but do not rely on them instead of conversations.

Ask children to show you what they enjoy online; curiosity is often more effective than criticism.

Encourage “swap activities”: after gaming, do something physical, social or creative.

Model the habits we want children to develop, even imperfectly.

Avoid using screens as the only reward or removal of screens as the only consequence.

Talk about how screens make children feel: calm, inspired, cross, tired, left out, overstimulated?

Have a reset day when needed, without making it feel like a punishment.

The summer holidays do not need to be screen-free to be healthy. A good summer is one where children have time to rest, connect, move, learn, play and enjoy some independence. Screens can be part of that, but they should not quietly take over the whole day. The best approach is usually steady, honest and balanced: clear boundaries, shared conversations, and plenty of attractive alternatives.

For your commutes, your wind-down, or a moment of inspiration, what podcast do you never miss?

So many, but if I had to choose one it would have to be ‘The Hobbit’ when I was a child and ‘Great Expectations’ as an adult. Both, at different times, completely captured my imagination and I was drawn fully into the stories and the characters.

TV Show You Binge-Watched (and Don’t Regret) We all have one...What’s your guilty pleasure or proud obsession on the small screen?

Homeland: many years ago Mrs O’Malley and I were given the first series on DVD as a leaving present from a year 8 pupil and his parents. His parents said, “this will change your life”. And it did, perhaps however I do regret series 8! One too many.

Film That Stuck With You What film left a lasting impression and why?

The Rest is History - I love the variety of topics that are available and the way in which the history becomes so real and in such an accessible, storytelling way.

Again, too many really to choose from, but if I had to pick one: ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ was genius cinema and completely captivating, escapist entertainment. Amusingly a couple of years ago when I was working in Cairo, I was often reminded in my daily life of the desert scenes from the film.

Musings from MOB Martin O’Brien, Deputy Head Pastoral, shares his thoughts on change, as we approach the end of the academic year.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi As the final hours of term loom, we are faced with a process which happens in all schools, all organisations, and in all nations on the planet. The process is one of change; moving from one phase to another, some elements planned, some involuntary, all consequential. As we face, brace and prepare for our change of academic year, we should bear in mind the words of John C Maxwell:

“Change is inevitable: growth is optional” We should also understand that whilst change must happen, it should be a process which we embrace, whilst accepting that any excitement may well be balanced by nerves or trepidation. We all know those for whom change, any change, is difficult, and our role is to support any anxiety and help others to look forward.

Perhaps before we look forward we look back; we reflect on a year with as many triumphs and successes as failures, and we learn to use those failures to grow from, to use, and to rise on stepping stones to success. Everything we have done, we can learn from, and it would be foolish not to take the time to look back and savour the opportunity to be quiet, and reflect.

Then we look forward; this is definitely exciting! The opportunities ahead, the new ventures, the new friends, the new subjects and activities, the new dorms, and the new perspectives on life. We must move at our own and yet others’ pace, and take others with us in an inclusive and welcoming manner.

“Change and decay in all around I see” Henry Francis Lyte was on to something there; he was, perhaps, contemplating a somewhat greater change; more like the Great Translation, but he was welcoming and grateful all the same. As we look forward to our own process of change, we remember above all our values; how are others feeling, and what can we do to help? Service in all things is our greatest challenge, as well as reward.

The Opening of the New OrWellbeing Hub

The OrWellbeing Hub started with a simple idea: our pupils’ wellbeing should be right at the heart of school life.

We know children do their best when they feel happy, safe, calm and understood.

When pupils feel grounded and have tools to help them manage worries, emotions, friendships and challenges, they are much more ready to learn, grow and enjoy school.

The idea for the Hub grew in two ways. Firstly, we wanted to create a safe and welcoming space for pupils; somewhere calm, friendly and supportive. A place where they could pause, talk, reflect, reset and feel listened to and where the ‘five ways to wellbeing’ could.

Secondly, we wanted wellbeing to be part of everyday school life and not just something we think about on special days. This led to the development of our OrWellbeing Strategy, which sets out how wellbeing is woven through the whole school, in classrooms, conversations, routines and relationships.

We also wanted to help pupils understand themselves as learners. How we feel can affect how we learn. Being able to regulate, manage emotions, understand others, organise ourselves and keep going when things feel tricky all helps us in the classroom and beyond. The OrWellbeing Hub brings all of this together.

It began with Caroline Brunt and Jo Coventry-King chatting through a vision, dreaming of a great space to embody these ideas and wondering where this special space could be. Step by step, those ideas became plans and those plans became the OrWellbeing Hub that we are so excited to open today.

Now, we have a fantastic space where wellbeing and learning sit side by side. It is a place for calm, connection, reflection and growth.

The OrWellbeing Hub is built around a simple belief: happy children learn well, safe children grow in confidence, and supported children flourish.

Every child is different. Each one has their own strengths, talents, worries, hopes and ways of learning. Some children need a quiet space to reset, some need encouragement to believe in themselves, and some need a trusted adult to help them find their way. When children feel valued, understood and inspired, they are much more able to grow in confidence and achieve their best.

We are so proud of how far this space has come, and we cannot wait to see how it supports our pupils now and in the years ahead.

10 Brilliant Summer Wellbeing Missions

Your official guide to feeling good, getting outside and not turning into a sofa!

The summer holidays are here. The days are longer, the weather is hopefully better, and you may finally have time to do all the important things in life, such as eating ice cream, staying in your pyjamas slightly too long, and wondering what day of the week it is.

But summer is also a brilliant time to look after your wellbeing.

Wellbeing is not just something adults talk about while holding clipboards. It means looking after your body, your mind, your friendships and your feelings. The more you practise it, the easier it becomes. It’s a bit like brushing your teeth, tying your shoelaces, or remembering not to leave your wet towel in a mysterious heap on the floor.

At Orwell Park, we often think about the Five Ways to Wellbeing: Be active. Take notice. Give. Keep learning. Connect.

Here are ten summer missions to help you practise them over the holidays:

1. Go on a sunset walk Wellbeing power: Be active + take notice Go outside in the evening and go for a walk with your family, a friend or a responsible adult. Your mission is to spot at least five interesting things.

Could you notice: the colour of the sky, the birds, a cloud shaped like an animal, the smell of cut grass or watch the way your dog enjoys this walk as if it has never been outside before?

Walking helps your body move and your brain calm down. It is also a good reminder that the world is much more interesting when you actually look up from a screen.

2. Make a summer adventure jar Wellbeing power: Keep learning + connect Write down lots of small summer ideas on bits of paper and put them in a jar. When someone says, “I’m bored,” which is usually said in the most dramatic voice possible, pick one out.

Ideas could include: make lemonade, build a den, learn a card trick, have breakfast outside, make a bug hotel, create a family quiz, or invent a new sport with completely ridiculous rules.

This helps you try new things and make memories with other people. It also means nobody is allowed to say, “There’s nothing to do,” unless they have officially defeated the jar.

4. Complete a kindness mission Wellbeing power: Give + connect For one week, do one kind thing each day without making a huge fuss about it. You could: help make dinner, feed a pet, tidy something without being asked, write a thank-you note, make someone a drink, or let someone else choose the film, even if you strongly believe your choice was better!

Kindness does not need to be big or expensive.

Sometimes the smallest things make people feel properly noticed.

Warning: kindness can be contagious. Use responsibly.

3. Learn one new outdoor skill Wellbeing power: Keep learning + be active Choose one skill to improve over the summer. It could be skipping, swimming, cycling, catching, throwing, gardening, identifying birds, building dens, doing keepy-uppies or finally learning how to put up a tent without everyone arguing.

You do not have to be amazing straight away. In fact, being terrible at first is often part of the fun. Your brain likes learning new things, even if it complains loudly at the beginning.

By the end of the summer, you might be able to say, “I couldn’t do this before, but now I can.”

That is a very good feeling.

5. Have a screen-free outdoor hour Wellbeing power: Be active + take notice Pick one hour when screens are put away and you do something outside.

You could read in the garden, play cricket, make an obstacle course, draw with chalk, play cards, watch the clouds, build a den, or lie on a blanket and do absolutely nothing in a very purposeful way.

Screens are fun, but your brain also needs space to wander. A screen-free hour can help you feel calmer, more creative and less like your eyeballs have turned square.

6. Start a nature notebook Wellbeing power: Take notice + keep learning Use a small notebook to record what you notice over the summer. You could draw leaves, write down birds you see, sketch insects, describe the weather, press flowers, or give clouds extremely serious names like “Sir Fluffington the Third.”

You do not need to be an artist or a scientist. The important thing is to look closely.

Taking notice helps your brain slow down. It also makes ordinary things feel a bit more extraordinary.

7. Plan a picnic

Help organise a picnic. It could be at the beach, in a park, on a walk, in the garden, or even on the sitting room floor if the weather is doing classic British summer things.

You could help choose the food, pack the bag, bring a game, make a playlist or create a picnic quiz.

Picnics are excellent because food tastes better outside. Nobody knows why. It is science. Probably.

Make a seven-day movement challenge. Keep it fun and realistic. You are not training to become an Olympic octopus.

9. Make something for someone else Wellbeing power: Give + keep learning Make something thoughtful for another person. You could bake biscuits, paint a stone, make a bookmark, create a card, write a poem, draw a picture, or make a tiny “thank you” gift.

It does not have to look like something from a professional craft website. Handmade things are allowed to be wonky. In fact, wonky often makes them better.

Making something for someone else helps you practise kindness, patience and creativity.

Your Summer Wellbeing Challenge This summer, try to do a little bit of each of the Five Ways every week: Be active — move your body.

Take notice — slow down and look around.

Give — do something kind.

Keep learning — try something new.

Connect — spend time with people who matter.

Try something like: Day 1: 20 star jumps Day 2: 10 minutes of skipping Day 3: Make an obstacle course Day 4: Go for a bike ride or walk Day 5: Practise balancing Day 6: Play a game outside Day 7: Teach someone else your favourite challenge Moving your body helps your mood, sleep and energy. It does not have to be perfect. It just has to get you moving.

Bonus points for roping in an adult and making them look slightly ridiculous.

10. Create a “best bits of summer” board Wellbeing power: Take notice + connect At the end of each week, add something to a summer memory board or scrapbook. It could be: a photo, a ticket, a pressed flower, a funny quote, a drawing, a recipe, or one sentence about something good that happened.

This helps you notice the best moments before they disappear into the great blur of “I think that happened last Tuesday?”

By September, you will have a collection of memories that prove your summer was not just snacks, screens and asking what was for dinner.

Looking after your wellbeing does not need to be serious, complicated or boring. It can be muddy, funny, sunny, creative, kind and occasionally involve sandwiches.

Nourish to Flourish Some Summer recipe ideas for our pupils to learn over the Summer

We all know that learning about healthy, fun recipes helps children to develop a sense of ownership over their diet and choices. Here are a few suggestions for pupils to have a go at this holiday.

Rainbow Fruit Skewers No cooking, colourful, quick, and younger children can help thread fruit onto skewers. Older children can practise safe chopping and presentation. BBC Good Food describes them as simple, colourful and fun, and says children will enjoy helping to make them.

Pizza Pitta Faces Uses pitta bread, tomatoes, cucumber and peppers to make smiley-face mini pizzas. They only need a few minutes under the grill, so children can design the faces and adults can handle the heat.

These receipes aimed at younger pupils make healthy eating playful and give children choice and independence. Creating faces with vegetables can help younger children try new foods, while older children can make their own designs and take responsibility for a simple lunch. his links beautifully to wellbeing because it encourages children to take notice of colour, texture and taste, while also making a healthy snack they can feel proud of.

Stir-fry Stir-fries are one of the best recipes for teenagers because they are quick, adaptable and help young people learn useful cooking skills. Older children can practise chopping vegetables, timing ingredients, cooking noodles or rice, and learning how to balance flavours. It is also easy to adapt with chicken, tofu, prawns or extra vegetables. Why not try a few different versions over the holidays?

Homemade burgers or quesadillas These are a step up from simple snacks because children need to plan fillings, use heat safely, assemble layers carefully and think about texture and flavour.

Quesadillas are especially good as they can include cheese, beans, chicken, peppers, sweetcorn or avocado.

These recipes are also a good wellbeing choice! They help children feel capable and independent.

They also encourage healthy eating in a relaxed way, with children choosing colourful ingredients and creating a proper meal for themselves or the family. We hope you create and enjoy some great meals together over the Summer!

THIS MONTH WE SPOKE TO DOMINIC ABOUT HIS FINAL MONTH AT ORWELL.

What’s been your favourite part of school this month and why?

Unfortunately, I broke my knee at Easter (skiing) and so have not been able to enjoy all the cricket that I love but I have been able to start swimming and it’s been really fun so far. The school pool is beautiful and it has been great fun!

What’s something new you’ve tried or learned recently that surprised you? When I was at school during the Ardèche week (because of my knee, I interviewed all the school’s support staff and learnt all about their jobs.

It was REALLY interesting!

What’s one moment this month that made you feel really proud?

With the help of my parents and staff, I have worked really hard on my recovery. I did my exercises every single day and now I can finally walk again!

What’s the most fun or unusual thing you’ve done in school lately? We had great fun going shopping and for a cheeky treat on my special Year 8 week.

Who’s someone in school who made your day better this month and what did they do?

Mrs Roberts makes every day great.

I will miss her a lot!
