Planning For Relocation
Hello Members, It’s hard to comprehend the first year for this Commodore is almost over, and we’re already looking at an AGM in August and an Opening Day in October. The last 12 months have been eventful, and I believe pretty good ones for the Club. We have been able to sustain and improve the club while facing imminent relocation and a persistent pandemic. I have to say I’m proud of the way our committee, sections, members managers, and staff have risen to the challenges.
Annual General Meeting This year’s AGM has been scheduled for Thursday, August 18th. Per the Constitution, this triggers a couple of important actions: •
Notice of Meeting – To be given to all members at least one month before the AGM. The notice will confirm the time and place.
•
Nominations for Club Committee, Trustees, and Patron - These nominations need to be lodged with the Secretary in writing thirty days before the Annual General Meeting. If you need a form, they can be picked up in the office.
Your attendance at the AGM is important. Except for Section Rear Commodores, all other positions are voted on at the AGM. At this year’s AGM, we can also anticipate motions regarding the Club’s future will be decided.
I recently attended a WA club conference, and we’re certainly on everyone’s radar. The latest update from Development WA regarding the timeline for the project indicates they intend to complete the breakwater by the end of the year and commence dredging and seawall construction immediately after. They intend to start construction of the new club facility in March 2023, with a 14-month build duration. Negotiations with the City of Joondalup regarding our future tenancy agreement have been initiated, and we’re hoping to have a recommendation to present to the members in time for the AGM. The response from the members to the invitation to participate in the relocation working groups has been very positive, and we intend to present the results of their work in the next issue of the Tide.
Health Update By now, most of us have either been exposed to the dreaded virus or know somebody who has. Many of those that have gone through it, including most of our staff, can attest to its power to put you on your backside. The appearance of seasonal flu and the accompanying symptoms have not helped at all, and the illness has been a trial for both managers and staff. They have battled on, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as these viruses run their course.
Tide Magazine I’d like to acknowledge the effort Fenn McDonnell and Kym Shephard have put into redesigning and publishing the Club’s magazine. I’ve heard nothing but compliments on the layout and style, and the content provided by the Sections really makes it come alive. Finally, my personal thanks to all our volunteers for their selfless and underappreciated help. They’re usually in the background, dedicating their time to get things done. As an organization primarily run by volunteers, any success we have enjoyed is in large measure due to their efforts. See you around the traps,
Ken Wood Commodore

From the General Manager Fenn McDonnell
Hello members! As they say, time flies when you are having fun! Time is certainly flying here as we approach the beautiful Spring weather. We are already working hard on finalising plans for the festive season, the summer events, as well as the New Club transition phase.
Events We have some exciting events coming up in the spring and summer, so keep an eye on our Facebook page and website to keep up to date with them all. It was great to see such a good turnout to the Wine and Cheese night and Members Appreciation night. Band nights have been very successful. We are selling out all our events so please get your tickets early so you don’t miss out.
Section and Community Engagement We had some positive meetings with the City Of Joondalup (COJ) recently that will help us with the transition into the New Club. COJ naturally insists we have a strong focus on “Community Based Outcomes” The more we can offer the community, the more support we get. This helps to remind us to sit back and focus on, “who we are” “what we offer” and how we can help the community? We are always looking for ways to attract more participants for our sea sports sections and more ways to engage the community. Please email or call me anytime with suggestions.
Technology The new POS (Point of Sale) System will be installed in July. This will make the service and processing of payments more efficient and user-friendly. Eftpos machines will be connected so that the staff will no longer need to manually enter the sale amount into the machines. You will be able to order food from any POS. Please be patient as there may be some teething challenges in the first few weeks.
6
Website/Branding and Photos We all love seeing your smiling faces at the Club. If you get any good photos of the Club and the members, please send them to Kym Shephard, marketingmanager@orssc.asn.au. We always need photos for the TIDE, the newsletter, the section screens, the website, and social media. We are continuously improving the brand of the Club, and there is no better way than good photos. A photo says 1000 words.
Recognition and thanks Would like to thank all our staff for doing such a wonderful job with the challenges we have had recently. Luckily, we managed to stay open stay relatively busy. Plus, a special mention for recognition of service, Lynda Crosswell has just had her 10-year anniversary of working at the Club. Lynda does a great job of keeping us all in the line in the office and managing payroll and financial reporting.
Look forward to seeing you all down at the Club.
Regards
Fenn McDonnell General Manager

e e tt i m m o C
At ORSSC, we value our club members and strive to ensure they feel welcome and included as an integral part of the clubs' operations and celebrations. Tide seeks to select and feature one member of our club in every issue, highlighting aspects of their personality and their contribution to the club so you can get to know them and maybe even say hello next time you see them. The questions we ask share insight into each members personal tastes and lifestyle away from their club duties.

The Angling Report
Season Summary Francis McKeown
May Boat Fishing Comp Mays boat fishing comp was a two-day affair starting at 6am Saturday 14th May until 4pm on Sunday 15 due to the 8th May being Mother’s Day. The weather looked ok so some of us ventured far…. Reel Crazy and crew headed for Jurien bay late Friday arvo and when we arrived we found a town with no eateries - the pub’s chef had Covid and the sandpiper was shut…. The good old fish and chip shop was open. Fishing Saturday wasn’t much better fish were hard to find even at 250 meters!! Hard work for an undersized pink snapper so late Saturday we returned to fish in Perth. The Wheymouth and crew started at Leeman and did much better they also ventured to deeper waters with much better success, each getting a Gray Banded Cod and other species. The weather in Perth was worse than predicted but didn’t stop a good turnout! The lucky competitor prize was won by Red… Well done mate!
Men’s winner | Glenn Wheymouth (Really good bag 26 kilos plus) Veterans winner | Terry Bell Ladies winner | Samantha Broadhurst
12
Mini junior | Ashton Marsden
UPCOMING E VENT S The next competition is on the 2 July. Let’s all hope for an absolute spanker of a day. Good luck everyone and stay safe!
June Boat Fishing Comp Well, the weather gods tried to be nice and what seemed to be a fair day to go fishing had its moments. Fish were on the bite early and a few of the smaller species found their way into a few bags. A few of the larger fish like sambo and sharks were a bit light on but some very nice Bauldies, Brakesea and Dhuies were weighed in as were some very nice King George. It was a little disappointing that no ladies, juniors, or mini juniors weighed in. Men’s winner | Glenn Wheymouth (Really good bag 26 kilos plus) Veterans winner | Terry Bell The lucky competitor prize was won by Gary Bell (woohoo) Don’t forget that the next Angling meeting on Wednesday 6th July is an important one for voting on motions.

The Sailing Report The Inaugural Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club – Sun City Yacht Club Rally 21st May The weather gods turned on a sensational day for this event, the Sun City Yacht Club at Two Rocks brought a number of their dinghies down the new Ocean Reef Marina to compete against the Ocean Reef sailors in a first of its kind rally race.
Season Summary Terry O'Grady
Sailing Presentation Night 14th May The Sailing Presentation Night went off in splendid fashion and the Galley did an outstanding job providing the 60 odd guests wonderful food with clockwork precision. The Champion Boat was awarded to another Clubman 8, “Hot Gossip” skippered by Ian Campbell. The Wreckers award went to “Venomous” for playing love on the rocks in the Marina. The Crew Person of the Year went to Ken Gardner for his outstanding contribution and Erin Osbaldston collected the Sailing Person of the Year Award. Maura Murphy was crowned the Lady Skipper. It was good to see the event well attended and the section used the club’s event ticketing system with great success with thanks to Kym, the clubs Marketing & Communications Manager for setting it all up. A special thank you also goes out to Gina for organising the night’s entertainment at a lastminute’s notice.
16
The contestants had to line up and run to the boats and sail off from the beach. They had to complete two laps around inside the new marina. It was a teams style event with 3 races completed. Ocean Reef ran out to be the eventual winners with some very strategic sailing, which was to avoid Alan Peacham’s Feeling Free anchored at one end of the course as they were equipped with very large water pistols. All in all, it was a great day out, and many thanks to the SCYC sailors for coming down and providing their dinghies. Afterward was followed by a friendly BBQ and refreshments. It certainly did a good job of showcasing the sorts of activities the new marina will provide.
Sailing AGM The section also had its AGM just before the time of writing this report and a vote was taken for the Rear Commodore as another contender had raised their hand for the role. The vote was not conclusive so I made the decision to step aside and allow the contender to take on the role. I wish him all the best and I offer my full support. So, as such, this will be my last Tide Report for now and I trust you all enjoyed them.

River Trip to Peppermint Grove 15th May 2022 The weather hadn’t been looking that great in the week leading up to the planned river trip and Bar B Q at Peppermint Grove, however we decided to continue and hope for the best. Everyone met at Maylands Boat Ramp about 9.30am with a planned departure around 10.00am, 3 boats arrived with their crews and proceeded to launch, we headed off downstream and the conditions couldn’t have been better apart from being a little cold out of the sun, there was very little wind and the sun did come out from time to time, as we cruised past the city we received word that a 4th boat was there waiting for us (Steve & Lina), there was very little traffic on the river and little chop so everyone got chance to stretch the legs of there motors, we pulled into Peppermint Grove and navigated our ways through the small sailing boats and onto the beach. Once ashore the Bar B Q was started and people began cooking their lunch and having some welldeserved refreshments, we were joined by Andy and Rina who arrived by car.
GENER AL BUSINES S Following the recent lifting of the COVID restrictions within the club Power Boat section Members numbers appear to be raising
After lunch was finished Lina & Steve suggested that everyone take Finska (A kind of skittles). This turned out to be great fun, everyone then climbed back onto the boats and headed back to Maylands and then home, Another Great day that was fully enjoyed by all that attended. Regards,
St eve Hayward Rear Commodore, Power Boating

The Diving Report
Season Summary Erick Erhard
The dive section has been a little quiet throughout May - we have had small but reasonable turnouts for the dine-in and meeting. The main reason being poor weather and people down with Covid.
GENER AL BUSINES S By-laws to be completed, still work in progress
Dive Section Boule’s afternoon The dive section organised a Boules competition on Saturday 7th May. It was a beautiful sunny day – perfect conditions for this event. We had more than 20 people complete and we were put into teams of two, the competition was fierce! The final round was between Karrie and Di and Laurie and Leith with the girls taking out the win and being presented with the trophy, so this time the trophy found itself at the Woolgar household again!
Compressor Refresher Course
The afternoon concluded with drinks and shared plates of food.

We kicked off the month of May by hosting New Sensation – A tribute to INXS who delivered a highenergy show featuring the greatest music that spanned INXS’s 40-year career. We showed our Mothers how much we loved them with a Mother’s Day buffet Lunch and following that at the end of May, we hosted our Members-only Wine & Cheese Night. With around 150-180 in attendance, we had a room full of cheese platters, chocolate and cheese fountains, and wine! Thank you to our wonderful suppliers Skuttlebutt, San Martino and Mezzanine who came along to showcase their range, and Trent Williams our Acoustic Entertainer. The month of June delivered the inaugural Members Appreciation Night, complete with complimentary refreshments and mouth watering food as well as some rocking entertainment by Tangent. Everyone had a fantastic night and it was great to see so many of our members there, longterm and new. Landslide – A Tribute to the Eagles & Fleetwood Mac was next which was a sellout event followed by the 80’s Disco Night – and what a night it was! We saw flares, fluros, afros, and even rollerskates that made an appearance! We were looking for commitment with the outfits and our members certainly did not disappoint. 22
“Appreciating our members” has been our focus over the last few months. All of our events have been full of members, flowing drinks, great food, and even better company, and we have plenty more of these to come – stay tuned! The success of these events would not be the same without our amazing members, not to mention the dedicated staff that put all this together and work tirelessly to keep you all entertained. Remember to keep putting your event ideas in the suggestions box on the bar, we have had a couple of great ideas which we are in the process of working on, so your feedback is valued and taken on board. We are so grateful for you all and would like to thank you all for being a part of the best Family Club by the Sea.
