Commodore Hi Members Welcome to the Tide.

All things in the club are running well and we are marching ahead with summer. Hope you all had a fantastic Australia Day with plenty of Aussie Aussie Aussie shouting.

A Big reminder of our half yearly AGM on the 18th February and I hope as many as you can come do as its important to get involved with the club and how its run.

We also have our Open Day coming up on the 12th March and all of you guys who bring visitors down it would be a great time to get those people to join as its half price nomination on that day. All are welcome that day and you can bring as many people as you like and show off our great club and the great views that we all enjoy on a weekly basis.

We have been working on the club but a lot of this is on things that have to be done but not a lot of things to show for it.

Upgrades to the gas for the safety off our staff and members with two new big cylinders that will stop the kitchen and the club running out. Please continue to support our Sunday 12pm opening as we all would like to continue having a longer time on a Sunday to have a meal or snack or a nice ale or glass of wine on a Sunday afternoon.

Our 100 club continues to be very popular with members enjoying the win and spending their winnings at the club. Its only $5.00 per number per week and 1st prize of $100 2nd $70 and 3rd $30.Numbers can be got on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights.

We also have our $9.90 meal nights on Thursday nights that are very popular and look out for a deal on Wednesday nights and our chase the joker that is worth the trip down in its self.

Also our members draw on Friday night is well worth the trip down on a Friday night drawn between 8 and 9 pm that jackpots to a $1000 just for being a member but you must be there for this one and must have you card with you, but as you all know now no card no drink.

As you may or may not be aware all members can join all sections so if you would like to get more information on any section please speak to the rear Commodores of those sections and I am sure they will be very willing to help.

Remember I am always available to you guys so if you see me at the club come and introduce yourselves to me and have a chat.

Winners for December were Cruze Marsden for the mini juniors, Kyla Stummer for the juniors, no ladies weighed in although a certain boat with a lady on it unfortunately did not make the weigh in on time. Mens was taken out by Daniel Bell.

January comp was back up to our normal numbers with 25 members signing on and 9 boats competing.

Mini juniors was won by Connor Elliman, juniors was won by Kyla Stummer. Veterans was hotly contested with Eric Leigh

winning with 74 points, ladies won by Alyce Wettinger and the mens won by Mitchell Bell.

Power Boat Report Hi Everyone On December 11th to the 13th we had our yearly Christmas Trip at the Quest Apartments Mandurah. We had a fantastic participation of 38 members and 8 boats. The Quest is an ideal location to base ourselves to view the Christmas lights and access the Peel estuary. The weather on the weekend was favourable for boating. The weekend Started Friday night with boats heading out to cruise the Mandurah canals to view the decorated houses with an array of Christmas lights. Our boats were also decorated with tinsel and Christmas lights. As usual the canals were busy but we navigated the canals with ease being lead by our very experienced cruse captain Steve Oliver.

Saturday our convoy left the Quest and headed to Ravenswood tavern for lunch. The trip across the Peel inlet was a little bumpy but still enjoyable and no beer or wine was reported spilt. It was a slow but enjoyable cruise along the river and arrived at the Ravenswood with enough room for us to tie our boats up to the shore. We all tucked into lunch and again a few drinks were consumed.

Saturday night was secret Santa night with our special guest Santa himself handing out surprise gifts. We all gathered together and watched as gifts were opened and then keen eyed people planning and scheming to steel gifts that would be better at their home than the original owner. From the night we have worked that there are alliances in place so more tactics are required for next years secret Santa.

Sunday morning saw some of us head home with one person not feeling the best after a little bit too much Christmas wine the night before. While the others drove our boats along the estuary to Dolphin Quay for a brunch and those without boats met us there.

It again was a very enjoyable weekend with a big thankyou to all those who attended.

Dive Report January Rottnest Dive Charter Our new Rear Commodore, Sindy, has brought great energy to the role and one of the many things she has done is reintroduce club dives, which is great for those of us who do not have a boat as well as for bringing us all together on, and under, the water.

We started the season back in November with a shore dive on the Ammo Jetty at Woodman Point and in January we had SYV ½VWX FSEX HMZI -R E TEVXRIVWLMT [MXL 4(% ,MPPEV]W [I XSSO SZIV XLIMV FSEX ;MPH¾S[IV ERH SJ YW QMRYW SRI [EPOMRK wounded) headed over to Rottnest for a couple of dives. We were on the boat and leaving Hillarys Boat Harbour by 8am and were all thankful to Sindy for not just organising the boat but also the weather. It took us about an hour to steam over to our ½VWX HMZI WMXI .EGOWSR 6SGO KMZMRK YW TPIRX] SJ XMQI XS WIX YT dive gear, have a catch up, hydrate and take some team photos.

I buddied up with Daz with his cray loop while I took my camera. This was my favourite dive of the day as there was

no current and visibility was quite clear. It was really good KVSYRH [MXL PSXW SJ W[MQ XLVSYKLW ERH GEZIW %W WSSR EW [I descended to the bottom, there waiting to greet us was the Port Jackson shark after which the site is presumably named?

Unfortunately either me rushing to get my camera set up or Daz’s Sharkshield spooked it away. There was at least a nice little ray right next to it who obliged me my photo. Daz QEREKIH XS ½RH E JI[ GVE]W MRGPYHMRK SRI NYQFS XLEX - EQ WYVI tasted good on the barbie that night. I managed some photos of the usual suspects: western blue devils and the crays that Daz missed but this was only my second dive playing with manual mode on the camera, which made it more of a training shoot as - I\TPSVIH GEQIVE WXVSFI WIXXMRKW ;I HMH ½RH XLI WLEVO EKEMR QMH HMZI ERH - WTIRX QMRYXIW NYWX P]MRK XLIVI XEOMRK LMW TMGXYVI while trying to eliminate as much backscatter as possible. When Daz started to run low on air I watched him back on to the boat before tagging along with Sindy and Graeme. Of course, I saw loads more crays after this point, almost directly under the boat.

Everyone agreed it was an excellent dive. Those with loops caught a few crays and those with cameras got a few good shots. There is always one â&#x20AC;&#x153;Doh!â&#x20AC;? moment on every dive trip and the honour this time went to Benâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Brendon who dropped his Go Pro as soon as he got in the water, though thankfully he found it immediately. The skipper Grant had trouble recovering the anchor; it was completely wrapped around some reef so Davey was sent down to disentangle it. This provided not just entertainment but also time to have lunch and share stories.

The second dive was at Swirl Reef round on the opposite side of Rotto. The sea conditions which were nigh on perfect before were now just about ideal; the sea shimmering like glass and the mermaid line hanging loose on the surface due to the lack of wind. However, the old adage about never judging a book by its cover proved apt as once we got to the bottom there was a fairly strong current. This time I was greeted by a large western blue devil at the bottom of my descent but had to dig in with my muck stick to take photos. By the time I looked up everyone else was 20m away and it was a good work out just to catch up with them against the current.

There were a few more western blues to see and photo for the rest of the dive plus the usual Rotto populations of PIEXLIVFEGOW FS\½WL W[IIXPMTW ERH WS SR 1MOI JSYRH QI E few nudibranchs on which to practice my macro shots and the last groups to get out of the water also reported a huge ray swimming around. %JXIV HI OMXXMRK [I LIEHIH FEGO XS ,MPPEV]W [LIVI QER] SJ XLI KVSYT KSX XLIMV G]PMRHIVW VI½PPIH XLIR TSTTIH MRXS XLI GPYF JSV a beer. I made my excuses, saying I had a number of chores to get through when I got home, but in reality I washed down my gear and then had a nana nap!

So, well done Sindy for organising the trip, thanks to Davey and Grant from PDA for looking after us so well and hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to some more excellent club dives over the rest of the season.

PADI Dive Training 7YRHE] XL .ERYEV] WE[ XLI WXEVX SJ SYV ½VWX 3TIR ;EXIV Course. Two trainees, Mat and Sophie enjoyed a leisurely morning of theory and practical at the home of the instructor, Graham Hindley.

After revision of chapter one we took to the pool to give our VIGVYMXW XLIMV ½VWX FVIEXL YRHIV[EXIV -X HMHR´X XEOI PSRK FIJSVI they were blowing bubbles, clearing masks, retrieving regulators and sharing air. Both did very well. Graham is a very patient, experienced trainer and the leisurely pace was a stark contrast to the time I studied my Open Water ticket.

The recruits were given their homework in preparation for the next session which will take place at Bayswater Training Pool.

Sailing Report Our 2016 Sailing Year is up and running. On Sunday 17th January ORSSC sailors competed with Hillarys Yacht Club in the North Coast Series races 5, 6, 7.

The presentation after the races was held at Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club with 80 or so sailors enjoying the catering and the beautiful surroundings.

As always participating in sailing is a fantastic experience.
