Dear Broadway Lover, I am going to ask you a favor. Close this program book and flip it over. Seriously, look at the back cover. You are now looking at the fantastic year of Broadway shows we will be presenting at the Orpheum in our 2018-2019 season. I do not want to be immodest, but isn’t it an unbelievable selection of shows? Anchored by the mega-hit Hamilton, it also includes some of the newer shows I have seen on my recent trips to Broadway, all of which have become favorites of mine. I love Waitress! When patrons ask me what I recommend seeing in New York, this show has been at the top of the list. A sweet story of a small-town woman who dreams of bigger things and hopes her pies will get her there. School of Rock and On Your Feet! are wonderful music-related tales; one of a ne’er-do-well substitute teacher who teaches his young pupils to play rock and roll and the other the story of a married couple whose Latin sound took over the world. A sequel to The Phantom of the Opera? The idea alone makes Love Never Dies intriguing. But when Andrew Lloyd Webber writes the music, you know this sequel will transport us to a time and place none of us ever imagined when the Phantom disappeared from his lair at the end of the original classic story. Then there is Anastasia. My assistant, who grew up in the 1990s, counts the animated movie of this story as her favorite childhood film. But you do not have to be young to enjoy this lavish production. It is truly a show for all ages that will make you swoon. Is that enough to get you excited? If not, we have also included the return of two classics: Les Misérables and Fiddler on the Roof! No explanation is needed on these two audience-favorite shows, I think. I am also happy to share with you that we are currently at the highest number of Season Ticket Holders in the history of the Orpheum Theatre! This is great news. In the coming season, we expect to go even higher. Truly, the only way to ensure you will have tickets to see these fantastic shows is to become a season subscriber. We want to share all that our season holds for a true lover of Broadway musicals like yourself. If you are a current Season ticket holder, please renew today. The deadline to renew is March 26th. If you want to become a new Season Ticket Holder, season tickets will go on sale to the public on April 20th. Thank you for being here tonight. Thank you for your ongoing support. To paraphrase the lead character of School of Rock: Rock On, Broadway Fan, Rock On!

SOMETHING ROTTEN! THIS WAY COMES

Go behind-the-scenes of SOMETHING ROTTEN!, the Tony Award®-nominated show that’s touring the country and will play the Orpheum Theatre April 10-15.

SOMETHING ROTTEN! sparked from an idea brothers Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick shared for almost two decades. ® Wayne, a GRAMMY Award -winning songwriter, and Karey, a former Disney screenwriter, thought up a musical about a writing team trying to create a hit play under the shadow of the most famous of playwrights, William Shakespeare. Karey remembers, “It was a series of conversations that happened over many years. We were big history buffs. We started with ‘wouldn’t it be funny if Shakespeare’s London were a lot like what Broadway was like in the 30’s?’ And it went from there.” Associate director Steve Bebout believes Something Rotten! will charm audiences of all kinds, not just those with an interest in Shakespeare or a background in theatre. “Most people know a little bit more about both of those things than they think they do. It’s so part of our collective consciousness in culture. Everyone had to come in contact with Hamlet at some point in their lives, if they went to high school. The other piece is, if you think, ‘Ugh, I really don’t like Shakespeare,’ the second song in our show is, “God, I Hate Shakespeare.” So we’re the perfect place for you. We take the piss out of Shakespeare properly!” “I’m confident that the show is going to have the same level of entertainment value on the road that it does in New York,” Karey says. “We’re going to make sure that it does. I’m excited. The chance to get it out and show it to more people, I hope that this is going to be with us the rest of our lives.” ®

After its debut, Something Rotten! was nominated for 10 Tony Awards , including Best Musical and Best Choreography. O’Farrell adds, “There’s just one great song after another. And in between, the jokes are funny. What more could you want?”

Nothing’s as AMAZING as a MUSICAL!

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Also, please refrain from searching through your purse or bag or unwrapping candy. You may be making more noise than you think. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
