JULY 22-27, 2025 • ORPHEUM THEATRE

JULY 22-27, 2025 • ORPHEUM THEATRE
Somewhere around 2010, a black colleague of mine in the Chicago theatre scene approached me about producing a revival of The Wiz for its 35th Anniversary. While I have always loved the joyful celebration of culture that is The Wiz, I suggested to him that perhaps the show would be better served by a producer of color. His reply was succinct – “Yes, it would be. But I have not found one in this city with the resources to pull it off.”
With that, it hit me that this show, despite its success, was still fighting the battles it faced when it was first produced on Broadway in 1975. A lack of representation. A lack of opportunity. A lack of funding.
Before The Wiz debuted, there had only been one Broadway show that featured a black cast and black culture; the 1960 production of A Raisin in the Sun. This Lorraine Hansberry play tells the story of a black family as they grapple to follow their dreams in a time of racial and gender discrimination. Prior to A Raisin in the Sun, white actors in black-face and racial stereotypes were the norm on Broadway stages when an African American character was featured.
As theatre lovers, we owe The Wiz a huge debt. If not for The Wiz, there may not have been the Tony Award-winning productions of The Lion King, Once on This Island, or this season’s hit play, Purpose. The Wiz laid the groundwork for all of them – it broke the mold that needed breaking. It demonstrated that black culture and black stories have a place on the Broadway stage.
Therefore, let us celebrate alongside the cast of this 50th year revival of The Wiz Celebrate the joy, the significance, and the love that is The Wiz!
I am happy this revival is on tour and playing the Orpheum in Memphis. I am happy to be able to bring it here for your enjoyment. I am happy that you have chosen to spend a couple of hours experiencing this production that is so important in the evolution of the American musical theatre genre.
Enjoy!
