Dear Friends, Welcome to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I am happy you have chosen to spend your evening at the Orpheum Theatre watching this terrific production.

For those of you who are faithful readers of these letters, you know that I rarely highlight individual shows in this space. Rather, I tell you about our series in general ways, including upcoming performances that can be purchased together as a package.

Today, I am going to break that self-imposed rule against marketing individual shows because we have two productions coming up very soon that I hope you do not miss!

The first is The Play That Goes Wrong. It runs February 5 through 9 here at the Orpheum. It was an option on our season package, so if you’re a season ticket holder and you did not pick up this title, I hope you’ll join us by purchasing single tickets to this wildly funny farce.

The premise of the show is exactly as the title suggests; a community theatre attempts to stage a serious murder mystery, but everything that can go wrong does. Scenery falls apart, actors get hurt and cannot perform, stage managers who do not know the lines try to fill in, plots get twisted… you get the picture.

This is one of the funniest plays I have seen in a long, long time! I highly recommend it to everyone.

No one should miss its comic hilarity. Please make plans to join us for The Play That Goes Wrong.

The following week, the Orpheum welcomes the return of “America’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World”, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

I have had the pleasure of presenting the Ailey company in three major American cities (Detroit, Chicago, and Memphis). I may well be the only arts presenter who can make this claim. The motivation for doing so can be found in my deep admiration for the artists, the company, and the legacy they represent.

If you have seen Ailey in the past, I encourage you to come this year to see their new works along with the classic masterpiece, Revelations (which, by the way, I consider the greatest piece of American choreography). If you have never seen Ailey, I encourage you to come, as your life will be forever changed by the experience.

DAVID GREIG (Bookwriter) is a playwright. MARC SHAIMAN (Music & Lyrics) composed the score and co-wrote (with Mr. Wittman) the songs for the film Mary Poppins Returns, which brought him two Oscar nominations, as well as a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination. SCOTT WITTMAN (Lyrics) Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Award winning lyricist, director, writer, and conceiver, Scott Wittman co-wrote the lyrics for the hit musical Hairspray (Tony, Grammy, Olivier Award winner) with creative partner Marc Shaiman. Wittman served as an executive producer on the hit film starring John Travolta.

Nominated for a Golden Globe, Grammy and two Emmy Awards for the original songs on NBC’s 8

musical drama Smash. Shaiman and Wittman’s original score for the Marilyn Monroe musical Bombshell was released by Sony Records. Scott & Marc’s Broadway writing credits include Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, which Scott also directed, Catch Me If You Can (Tony nom. for Best Musical), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway and the West End. Scott has created and directed concerts for Patti LuPone.

He has created solo shows for Christine Ebersole and Nathan Lane, as well as writing for Bette Midler’s 2015 Divine Intervention World Tour.

MARK KAUFMAN (Producer). As Executive Vice President, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Kaufman is currently represented on Broadway with the eight-time Tony Award-nominated hit musical Beetlejuice, based on Tim Burton’s cult movie classic. Kaufman has also produced the West End, Broadway, first national tour and Australian production of the Olivier Awardwinning musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Broadway stage adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery starring Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf, as well as the Tony Award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

Recent and upcoming projects include Dave (Arena Stage), 17 Again (NAMT), Dog Day Afternoon and A Star is Born. Before joining WBThV, Kaufman oversaw the Broadway productions of Hairspray, The Wedding Singer, and Elf for New Line Cinema. Kaufman executive produced the New Line films Secondhand Lions, Hairspray, Four Christmases, 17 Again and My Sister’s Keeper and co-produced Valentine’s Day. Kaufman wrote “Toothless” for ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney and “Just a Walk in the Park” for ABC Family.

Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage.

The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible.
