As we transition out of summer into our amazing fall season, I encourage you to enjoy the outdoors. There is significant scientific research on the benefits of being outdoors. According to a 2016 Business Insider article, being outdoors improves short-term memory, restores mental energy and reduces stress. It is also a great way to build physical strength and endurance. In this Program Guide, you will find several opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. From fitness in the parks to hanging out at Steam Pump Ranch on Saturdays, there is something for everyone. The Oro Valley Community Center is a 52,000+ square-foot facility located in the heart of Oro Valley. The center features more than 100 fitness classes a month, Kids Korner, a full suite of cardio and strength equipment, spin studio, two racquetball courts, four pickleball courts, 15 lighted tennis courts, two 18-hole golf courses and a recreation/lap pool. The center also has two meeting rooms and a private pool area available for rent, a golf shop and full service restaurant/bar. The Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices are located in the center. There are two fitness packages: Classic and Premium. Fitness memberships are billed monthly, with a 30-day written cancellation notice required. The Community Center also offers drop-in daily use fees.

AQUATICS PROGRAMS GROUP SWIM LESSONS Group swim lessons are offered March through October every year. Each session is a month long with classes offered twice a week, for a total of four weeks. The specifics of each session will be posted on the Town’s website, with hard copies on site. Registration for each session will only be available in person at the Aquatic Center and will open approximately two week prior to the start of the session. Sessions are: • • • • •

ADULT (MASTERS) SWIM TEAM United States Masters Swimming (USMS) is a national membershipoperated nonprofit organization that provides membership benefits to nearly 60,000 Masters swimmers across the country. FIND YOUR FINS Find Your Fins (FYF) is a nonprofit, working to get veterans, addicts, seniors, financially burdened, disabled and special needs individuals into the water. We provide swim lessons to all of these populations for free. All levels, from extremely fearful to great swimmers, are welcome. Expand your world to water where so many benefits await! Level 1 (Ages 3-5): Swimmers will spend time on the steps while the instructor works with each child individually. Children will spend time on horseback, riding both Western and English styles. They will learn about horse behavior, language, interpreting what the horse is thinking, horse care and grooming, equine anatomy, colors and breeds. They will do crafts, go on trail rides and play games on horseback. Emphasis is placed on the relationship with the horse and safety. Helmets and boots will be loaned to students as-needed. Instructors emphasize safety and are well trained in their riding discipline.

FREE! ZOMBIE SHOOT AT THE ORO VALLEY ARCHERY RANGE Saturday October 20, 8 – 11 a.m. Naranja Park, 810 W. Naranja Dr. Join in Halloween fun at Naranja Park Archery Range! We will have zombie games and pumpkin shooting, as well as a 14-target 3D fun shoot on the west walking course, and fun zombie targets on the fixed range! This event is free, but we will hold a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for the archery range and Oro Valley JOAD.

DOGGIE DASH ‘N DAWDLE Saturday, Oct. 20, 5 – 8 p.m. CDO Riverfront Park, 551 W. Lambert Lane Two-mile Doggie Dash run/walk (registration required) One-mile Doggie Dash run/walk (registration required) Dog festival (FREE!) At the free dog festival portion of this event, enjoy prizes, dog crafts, dog costume contest, training demos, more than 20 local dog organizations and free dog stuff! This is a family-friendly event, and all ages are welcome!

Shooters must be at least 8 years old. Please bring your own bows and arrows. (No crossbows.)

The one- and two-mile events begin at 5:30 p.m. Register between Aug. 20 and Oct. 12 for just $10; Oct. 13 – race day is $15. Registration includes a special Doggie Dash ‘n Dawdle souvenir, giveaways and a medal. T-shirts available for purchase during online registration for $10, or on race day for $15.

FIFTH ANNUAL HOT COCOA 5K RUN/WALK January 1, 2019, 11:19 a.m. Steam Pump Ranch, 10901 N.
