Orléans carver produces art with a chainsaw

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Some artists use paint brushes and a pallet, while others may use pencils or even pastels. Still others create their art with a camera, or using pieces of stained glass.

Orléans resident Gaetan Bernier creates his art with a chainsaw, or at least that’s how he starts.

Bernier is a wood carver. He began wood-working over 40 years ago, making pieces of furniture. Then, just over 20 years ago, he took a course on carving wood reliefs that was taught by accomplished woodcarver André Brault at the Orléans Visual Arts Centre.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bernier was binge watching YouTube videos when he came across a video on carving animals from a single section of tree trunk using a chainsaw.

“I saw the video and I thought, ‘I can do that’. I had skills with a chainsaw and there is always lots of free wood around, ” recalls Bernier.

His specialty is bears, but he’s also carved

a couple of eagles.

Bernier describes the first few pieces he made as “very modest” in terms of both their scale and in detail.

He mostly works in pine and starts by first deciding what he wants to carve and how big it will be. He then goes out and starts foraging for fallen trees that are the proper size for each project.

Once he has the wood, he projects a picture, or drawing on to it and makes a rough chalk outline. After he draws the outline, he slowly begins to cut away the excess wood to create a rough form of whatever animal he is carving.

Once he’s happy with the form, he starts doing the more detailed work with a Dremel rotary tool and hand chisels.

It can take upwards of 30-40 hours to complete each carving. Although Bernier is retired, he does a few renovation jobs on the side and carves whenever he has some free time.

he’s given away as presents to his daughter and brother-in-law. More recently, he’s made two carvings for some neighbours who were more than happy to pay for his time.

Bernier says the secret to being a good chainsaw carver is to be patient.

“You need to take your time and don’t cut too much wood,’ says Bernier. “Small mistakes are easier to fix than the big ones.”

And, of course, there is always lots of free wood around in case the mistake is too big to fix.

Pintail haunted house in limbo following bylaw complaint

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The Albert residence on Pintail Terrace in Chatelaine Village has welcomed Hallowe’en and Christmas display enthusiasts for the over 25 years with elaborate displays that have been enjoyed by young and old alike.

The father-and-son team of Brian and Patrick Albert put in hundreds of hours every year setting up the displays, especially the Hallowe’en display which in the past has included a haunted house made up of several temporary rooms.

The Alberts have used the display to raise more than $100,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), including more than $13.000 last year alone.

Days after they began putting the display away last year they were visited by a bylaw officer saying that the City had received a complaint from a neighbour about the display.

The Alberts didn’t think much of it at the time because they were busy setting up their Christmas display, which like the Hallowe’en display, draws hundreds of visitors to the street every year.

It wasn’t until they received a notice from the City’s bylaw office two weeks ago that they realized they had to make a difficult decision to remove the haunted house or risk getting a heavy fine. Their initial decision was to remove the haunted house, which has been attached to the front of their garage for the past 10 years.

But after making the bylaw complaint and their decision to remove the haunted house public in a Facebook post on July 5.

“We regret to announce the closure of The Albert CHEO Haunted House due to a neighbour’s complaint to bylaw. Bylaw now requires us to remove all buildings associated with the

haunted house,” Patrick Albert wrote in his post.

Within the same day the Alberts posted the news, their local city councillor, Matt Luloff, called to tell them that he had successfully asked that the demand to dismantle the house had been lifted in order to allow time to find a potential solution. He also arranged a meeting between the Alberts and representatives from the bylaw office and the city inspectors’s office.

“Apparently he called the Mayor, and he called the Chief Bylaw Officer and the Chief Inspections Officer,” says Albert. “At least it buys us some time to try and get this resolved.

While the Alberts are hoping to save the haunted house and keep raising money for CHEO, a supporter of theirs has set up an online petition entitled “Save the Albert Family Halloween House” In the preamble to the petition, its author, Stephanie Fortin, tried to

“The Halloween House is more than just an event; it’s a symbol of community solidarity and a lifeline

for a charitable cause,” writes Fortin.

Unconscionable On July 6, the countries that make up the United Nations General Assembly voted 136-9 against the American economic blockade of Cuba with 20 countries abstaining, including Canada.

This is probably the one and only time I have felt embarrassed to be a Canadian and should every other Canadian who supports the right of every human being to live with dignity, without a constant threat to their lives and those of their loved ones.

Because make no doubt about it, the current blockade and ongoing 67-year embargo against Cuba and its people is a crime against humanity that should be tried in International Court of Justice and not on the floor of the U.N. General Assembly in a debate over a non-binding resolution.

The blockade has resulted in widespread energy starvation, severe power blackouts lasting up to 22 hours daily, and critical shortages of fuel, food and medicine. Gasoline for private cars is non-existent and is now only limited to emergency responders, the military and limited public transit services. Most grocery stores are empty and whenever they do get food, people have to line up for hours just to get a chance to but some of it.

The fuel to run power stations is even more critical. People don’t depend on power just to keep their fridge running or to watch TV. You need electricity to run hospitals, operate dialysis machines and keep schools open. And you need fuel to run generators.

So rather than condemn the American blockade which is putting Cuban lives at risk, including young children, the Liberal government Mark Carney, decided to abstain rather than risk upsetting Donald Trump.

Pierre Trudeau, who was the first leader of a NATO-member country to visit post-Revolution Cuba in 1976 and maintained a friendly relationship with Fidel Castro, must be rolling over in his grave. Not that a Conservative government would have done any different. In fact, a Conservative government with Pierre Poilievre as prime minister might have voted against the resolution and in favour of the U.S. embargo.

But that’s beside the point. The point is that Canada, and that includes all of us, didn’t have the backbone to vote against what is an undefendeable embargo.

Canada should have voted against the embargo and it should be doing everything it can to send humanitarian aid, including fuel for essential services such as medical care.

Canada and Canadians have been one of Cuba’s biggest supporters for over 40 years. But when Trump first imposed the latest economic blockade, Canada and Canadian companies such as Sunwing, Air Transat and Blue Diamond, which owns a number of reports on the island, or should I say “owned” were the first to pull out.

In fact, Blue Diamond started shutting down some of their resorts while Canadians were still staying in them. Staff were given three hours to gather their personal items and get on buses to take them home. That’s not how friends should act. Nor should true friends sit on the sidelines, while their friends are being made to suffer. Canada’s abstention is a black mark on our country and Canadians in general.

The work of community building does not stop in the summertime The dog days of summer have a certain rhythm to them. Queen’s Park is quieter. Families are taking holidays. People are trying to squeeze in time at the cottage, a trip to the park, a barbecue with friends, or a few slower evenings on the back deck before the busy fall season returns.

But even in these quieter weeks, the work of community does not stop. Across Orléans, students are heading off to summer jobs. For many, it is their first real experience in the workforce.

They are working in restaurants, summer camps, stores, landscaping, recreation programs, and local businesses across our community.

Those first jobs matter. They teach responsibility, time management, teamwork, customer service, and the value of earning a paycheque. They help young people save for college, university, trades training, or whatever adventures still lie ahead. Just as importantly, they give them confidence and a sense of independence that can last long after the summer is over.

Construction workers are also hard at work finishing two new schools for our growing community. Long before the first bell rings, crews are on site through the summer heat, making sure these important projects are ready for the children, families, and staff who will soon fill them with life.

At the same time, our local service clubs and community groups are doing what they always do. The Lions

Club is out in the community with its barbecue. Community associations are hosting events, bringing neighbours together, and creating the moments that make Orléans feel like home. These gatherings may look simple from the outside, a grill, a few tables, some volunteers, but they are part of the fabric that holds a community together.

Summer is also a time for those of us in public life to step back from the daily rush and think more deeply about the work ahead. For me, that means researching policy, listening, reading, and thinking about the improvements I can bring forward when the Legislature returns.

The quieter weeks can be an important time to ask what is working, what is not, and how we can do better.

And yes, summer should also be a time to rest.

Spending time with family, getting away from the phone for a few hours, and recharging the batteries is not a luxury. It is necessary. We all need time to reconnect with the people we love, enjoy the community around us, and come back to our work with renewed energy and perspective.

That is one of the things I appreciate most about summer in Orléans. It reminds us that community is built in many ways. The pace may feel slower, but the work continues. And because of that steady, often unseen work, Orléans will be ready for the busy season ahead.

Unofficial silly season begins with municipal election campaign

Last, but by no means least, they are also responsible for how much you pay in property taxes every year. So it is a fairly important job and the municipal election deserves attention, unless, of course, you live in an a ward in which no one has come forward to challenge the incumbent.

That is currently the case in Orléans WestInnes ward where two-term incumbent Laura Dudas is so far running unopposed although would-be candidates still have until 2 p.m. on Aug. 21 to file their nomination papers.

But I digress. I should first explain which neighbourhoods are in the four east end wards.

burn Hamlet, Chapel Hill North, Chateauneuf, Convent Glen, Orleans Wood and Orléans Village.

Orléans East-Cumberland includes Chatelaine Village, Queenswood Heights, Fallingbrook, Cardinal Creek Village, Cardinal Creek and the former municipality of Cumberland north of Wilhaven Drive.

Orléans South-Navan includes Chapel Hill South, Bradley Estates, Eastboro, Avalon.

Notting Hill and the former municipality of Cumberland south of Wilhaven Drive including the Village of Navan.

While no one has so far stepped forward to challenge Laura Dudas in Orléans West-Innes ward, one candidate has registered to run against incumbent Catherine Kitts in Orléans South-Navan. La Ha Tacos food truck owner Jay Wing registered to run in the election on June 17.

Meanwhile in Orléans East-Cumberland, a total of six people have so far stepped forward to challenge incumbent Matt Luloff. And while a number of the challengers have been unofficially campaigning for months, the real race didn’t really start until Canada Day with door-to-door canvassing by the candidates

and their volunteers and flyer drops.

The biggest reason why most campaigns get off to an early start, or at least they should if they want to be a serious challenger, is the amount of daylight there is during July and August. Take it from someone who ran for city council not once, but twice. Anyone who waits until Labour Day to start their door-todoor campaign will run into the back to school period when the last thing any parent wants to do is talk to wanna-be politician.

That leaves the second week of September as the next likely time to start a fall campaign until you run into the first day of fall when the daylight hours start shrinking faster than a wool sweater in hot clothes dryer.

By the end of September it starts to get dark by 5:30 or six o’clock, and trust me, no one is going to answer the door after dark. In July and August it doesn’t get dark until 9-9:30, which gives you an extra four hours to go door-to-door.

So prepare yourselves to for a steady stream of candidates, especially if you live in Orléans East-Cumberland. And be ready to ask them questions. It will probably be the one and only time you’ll get the chance.

Don’t look now, but your doorbell is about to get a minor workout over the next few weeks. That’s because the unofficial start of the municipal election has already begun.

For those of you who missed civics class in high school, the municipal election is the one in which you elect the mayor, your local city council and your school board trustee.

Historically, municipal elections have an extremely low voter turnout at under 50 per cent. In the 2022 municipal election, less than 44 per cent of eligible voters bothered to drag themselves to their local polling station and cast a ballot.

By comparison, 76.9 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in last year’s federal election and provincial elections traditionally see a 60 per cent turnout.

The fact that so few people vote in the municipal election has always puzzled me, particularly when you consider that it’s the one level of government that affects our dayto-day lives the most.

The families and neighbours who make this such a welcoming place to call home?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that no object could truly tell the story of our community.

The best way, and perhaps the only way, to represent Orléans really is to just show it. That’s why I’m inviting residents to join me at Barrington Park, beside the Orléans Public Library, on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. for a community photo. I want to capture what makes our community the best in Ottawa: the people who live here. Bring a picnic basket, a frisbee, make a day of it.

Whether you’ve called Orléans home for decades or only recently arrived, whether you’re a student, parent, volunteer, business owner, retiree, or somewhere in between, you are part of the story of our community.

I hope you’ll join me for this special moment as we celebrate Ottawa’s 200th anniversary together and create a lasting snapshot of Orléans for generations to come.

Former Navan resident and dedicated community builder passes away

Morris was a charter member of the Navan Lions Club in 1952 and a huge supporter of all community activities throughout his lifetime. His wife Elda was a tireless worker of the Navan Women’s Institute, the Navan Branch of the

Canadian Red Cross Society, particularly during the Second World War, and a proud and faithful member of the Ottawa Women’s Canadian Club for many years.

Lorne Bradley took over the store after Morris’ death in 1975. At the time he had already been operating a school bus business since 1965. Today, M.L. Bradley Ltd. has over 100 buses owned and operated by his daughter Kathleen, her husband Gord and managed by their son Andrew.

While Lorne was running the store, Ross was a dedicated civil servant. He spent 35 years at StatsCan before finally retiring in the late 80s.

Although technically “retired”, Ross never stopped working.

He led the effort to twin Navan, Ontario, with Navan, Ireland, and he helped organize visits to both towns by their respective residents.

He also lead the effort to create the Navan Curling Club and served as it’s first president. He co-chaired the rebuilding

committee for the Navan Cenotaph, and he was heavily involved in the effort to renovate St. Mary’s Church in the Village.

After Ross’ son, John Bradley, took over J.T. Bradley’s in 1994, Ross became a fixture in the store and could often be seen walking the day’s receipts down to the local bank.

He was also Secretary-Treasurer of the St. Mary’s Cemetery Committee, and chair of the Jerry Calver Memorial Bonspiel, named in honour of his dear friend who passed away in 2013.

As a member of the Cumberland Township Historical Society, Ross co-wrote The Domes of Navan (2012) and was a key organizer of the 75th Anniversary of the Constable Harold Dent Memorial at the site of his murder in Navan in 1940. One of his last volunteer initiatives was the weekly bell ringing at St. Mary’s Anglican Church to support front-line workers during the pandemic.

Ross was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Gwen Bradley (née Tapscott).

A celebration of Ross’ life will take place at the Navan Curling Club at 1305 Fairgreen Ave. at 2:30 p.m. on July 16.

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Long-time Navan resident and dedicated community builder Ross Bradley has passed away at the age of 94.

Ross was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Jan. 6, 1932 to Morris and Elda Bradley of Navan. You could say that he came into this world pre-ordained to be a community leader. His grandfather was John Thomas Bradley, the founder of J.T. Bradley’s Country Convenience store.

When John Thomas died in September 1932, Morris Bradley took over the business with his brother Borden. The two brothers managed the store through the Great Depression and the Second World War. After Borden died in 1952, Morris ran the store on his own with the help of his oldest son Lorne.

NEIGHBOURHOOD Hello Orléans and Cumberland, Summer is one of the busiest and most vibrant times of year in Orléans and Cumberland, and it has certainly been a busy one so far. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to visit local businesses, attend community association meetings, participate in neighbourhood events, and connect with residents across our community. These conversations are invaluable, and I always appreciate hearing your ideas, concerns, and priorities.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Canada Day celebrations such a success. Although severe weather prevented us from ending the day with fireworks, the daytime festivities were a tremendous success. It was wonderful to see so many neighbours enjoying live entertainment, family activities, local vendors, and celebrating our country together.

Centrum Boulevard Public Realm Plan

One of the projects I’m most excited to see moving forward is the Centrum Boulevard Public Realm Plan. This is far more than a road reconstruction project. It’s an opportunity to transform the heart of Orléans into a safer, more welcoming, and more vibrant destination that better serves residents, businesses, and visitors for decades to come.

The project includes full road resurfacing and sidewalk replacement, improved landscaping and lighting, enhanced public spaces, and upgraded infrastructure. A strong focus on accessibility and active transportation will make it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to walk, cycle, and connect to nearby shops, restaurants, festivals, transit, and community amenities.

As the commercial and civic heart of Orléans, Centrum should reflect the vibrant and growing community it serves. This investment will not only replace aging infrastructure but also create a more inviting streetscape, support local businesses, and establish a welcoming gathering place where residents can shop, dine, meet, and spend time together.

Over the past several years, I have worked to secure funding and move this project through the City’s planning process, and I’m pleased to see it continuing to gain momentum. Public consultation is now underway, with a virtual public information session planned for August 19. In my Spring Neighbourhood Update, I highlighted several infrastructure projects scheduled for construction across Orléans East–Cumberland. I’m pleased to see many of those projects now well underway, with crews making steady progress on improvements to our roads, sidewalks, parks, pathways, and community facilities.

While some of this year’s projects may not make headlines on their own, together they represent a significant investment in the infrastructure that residents rely on every day.

Residents are already seeing those investments take shape in every corner of the ward, including road resurfacing in Cumberland, sidewalk replacements in Fallingbrook and Queenswood Heights, pathway renewals at Queenswood Ridge Park and Cassia Park, and upcoming pedestrian accessibility improvements in Châtelaine Village.

These investments help extend the life of City assets, improve safety and accessibility, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and ensure Orléans East–Cumberland is well positioned to support our growing community for years to come.

If you are looking for a unique artistic experience, then you should consider taking a fused glass class at the Da Artisti Studio and Gallery in Cumberland Village.

Fusing is the heating of two or more pieces of glass in a kiln so that they melt together to form one piece. The result is an object that has a stained glass quality with colour and texture, but without the leading that is required in making stained glass.

The 1-on-1 and group classes at Da Artisti are taught by owner Wendy Canci who is an accomplished fused glass artist in her own right. Each class is three hours long, during which you will make your own fused glass creation.

In the introductory class, you will learn to cut glass strips to create a 5” x 10” platter and free hand cutting for a 5” x 5” dish. In the intermediate class, students will learn to cut circles and play with glass enamels or glass powders to create a 12” bowl. You will pick the colours and the final look of your bowl. Students must have taken the introductory class to participate.

If you don’t have three hours to spare, you have the option of taking one of Da Artisti’s workshops which range from 60 minutes to 2.5 hours. Depending on the workshop you have the option of making a 5x10 inch suncatcher for $65, or a seasonal lantern for $100.

During her 40-plus years as both a real estate agent and a mortgage broker, Marie-France Lavigne has remained true to the belief that hard work, honesty and staying true to her clients is the path to success in an industry that has seen many people come and go.

It’s a recipe that she learned from her father while growing up in Timmins. It is no exaggeration that Conrad Lavigne is a legend in Northern Ontario. A broadcasting pioneer, he launched the first French language radio station in Ontario in Timmins in 1952, and in 1956 he launched the region’s first television station. Over the next 25 years,,\ he erected broadcasting towers all across the North and by 1965 he owned, what was at that time, the largest microwave transmission network in the world.

He eventually got out of the business in 1980 and would later receive the Order of Canada.

Growing up, Marie-France was always referred to as “Conrad’s daughter”. In an effort to make her own name for herself, she opened a hair salon immediately after graduating from beauty school. She was just 19.

Ten years later, she came to Ottawa to get her real estate license, She intended to return to Timmins to start a new career. Instead she remained in Ottawa and the rest, as they say, is history.

After 10 years in the real estate industry, Marie-France decided to transition into mortgages and bought a Mortgage Centre franchise in Orléans which she ran until 2011. After going through a divorce she sold the business but stayed on as a broker until she experimented with retirement late last year. That lasted all of three months.

In March of this year, she decided to get back into the real estate business and joined the Re/MAX Delta Realty Team owned by fellow east end real estate veteran Angelo Toscano.

Marie-France now specializes in helping empty-nesters go through the process of downsizing. A life dedicated to relieving pain through massage treatment Form very early on in her life, Amanda LynSmith has had an affinity for helping others. The path she chose was through massage therapy.

Neighbourhood Watch champion running for city council

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star (Over the next three editions of the Orléans Star, we will be looking at some of the candidates running in this fall’s municipal election starting with Barbara Daniela Gandolfo who is running in Orléans EastCumberland Ward again incumbent Matt Luloff.)

Barbara Daniela Gandolfo holds the distinction of being the first person to register as a candidate in the upcoming municipal election in Orléans – doing so the morning registration opened on May 1.

Gandolfo and her husband moved to Orléans from Toronto in 2023. The couple live in Fallingbrook where they are raising their young son.

It wasn’t long after she moved to Orléans that Gandolfo joined both the federal Liberal Riding Association and provincial Liberal Riding Association. She has also served as policy chair for the Orléans Federal Liberal Women’s Club and as president of the Orléans Provincial Liberal Women’s Association.

One of the issues she has been most passionate about is community safety. To that end she led the way in forming the

Fallingbrook Neighbourhood Watch Program and she is an active member of the East Ottawa Neighbourhood Watch Program Committee.

On her website, Gandolfo explains that she is running for city council because she believes Orléans East-Cumberland has failed to receive its fair share of city projects during the eight years Matt Luloff has served on city council.

“After eight years of the status quo in Orléans East-Cumberland our roads are less safe, our bus network is broken and families have to travel even farther to access the programs we rely on,” writes Gandolfo.

“I’ve listened to residents across our Ward and there is a disconnect between what our communities are asking for and what we are getting instead.”

The mother and interior designer believes she can make a difference and wants to bring about real change to the ward and deliver where she argues Luloff has failed.

Specifically, Gandolfo wants to improve the public transit service in the east end by restoring bus lines that work for students, commuters and local businesses that have been either scaled back or cut altogether over

the past several years.

She wants to streamline the process by which new businesses can open their doors.

She wants to expand bilingual childcare options for families. And she wants to establish an effective oversight process on road construction and repair projects to minimize the impact they have on neighbourhoods and daily commutes.

Another area Gandolfo wants to improve is road safety. If elected she would work with city staff to install additional traffic calming measures on neighbourhood streets to help put an end to “the unchecked, dangerous speeding on our local streets”.

“In Orléans East-Cumberland, we are proud of our community. We look out for our neighbours and want a healthy environment for our children. I believe our quality of life is worth protecting. A safer, affordable, thriving community is what I will fight for every single day,” Gandolfo offers on her website.

“Together we can build a stronger future for Orléans East-Cumberland.”

The municipal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 26, although eligible voters will have a chance to cast an early ballot on two Special Advance Voting Days on Oct. 1

This season, the company celebrates its 40th anniversary by returning to the park with Mirandolina, a sparkling comedy that has delighted audiences for more than two centuries.

For residents of Orléans, Strathcona Park is just a short drive away, making it the perfect destination for a summer evening of live theatre. Nestled along the Rideau River, the park provides a beautiful natural backdrop where audiences can experience professional theatre as the sun sets and the stars begin to appear overhead.

This year’s production is Carlo Goldoni’s Mirandolina, one of the masterpieces of Italian comedy.

At its centre is Mirandolina,

the intelligent and independent owner of a busy inn. Accustomed to fending off wealthy suitors, she meets her match in a proud nobleman who boasts that no woman could ever win his heart.

Determined to prove him wrong, Mirandolina sets in motion a clever game of wit, pride, and romance that quickly spirals into hilarious complications.

Although Goldoni wrote the play in the eighteenth century, its humour and characters remain remarkably fresh. Mirandolina herself continues to stand out as one of theatre’s great heroines, confident, capable, and always one step ahead of those around her.

Directed by Eleanor Crowder, this anniversary production reflects the imaginative style that has defined Odyssey Theatre for four decades. Audiences can expect beautifully crafted masks, colourful costumes, expressive physical

theatre, music, and inventive visual storytelling, all performed in the unique setting of Ottawa’s premier outdoor theatre.

The 40th anniversary is more than a celebration of one production.

It marks four decades of artists, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and audiences working together to create one of the National Capital Region’s most enduring cultural traditions. Since 1986, Odyssey Theatre has welcomed thousands of people each summer to share stories beneath the trees of Strathcona Park, creating memories that span generations.

Orléans mother and daughter behind new Shenkman exhibit

Special to the Orléans Star Like mother, like daughter.

Lucie Raymond is a Franco-Ontarian visual artist from Orléans who specializes in mixed media.

Her practice moves between fragility and resilience, memory and material, where perception shifts through layers of making.

She develops collaborative work rooted in relationship, transformation and lived experience.

Lia Keech is an emerging FrancoOntarian artist and industrial designer who also happens to be Lucie Raymond’s daughter.

Her practice bridges design and creating art through attention to material, form and function. Working across craft-based

processes and conceptual design, she brings a sensitivity to structure and construction within collaborative work rooted in observation, experimentation and transformation.

Together, mother and daughter have put together an exhibit entitled, What Lies Beneath, which will be on exhibit in the Lalande+Doyle exhibition space on the lower level of the Shenkman Arts Centre until Aug. 7.

Building on their first mother-daughter collaboration, Through Our Eyes, What Lies Beneath explores how two people can live through the same moments and carry different experiences of them.

Together, the pair revisited five phases of their relationship and, at times, discovered just how differently many of the same

moments had been experienced.

“In looking back, we found new understanding in moments we thought we already knew,” says Lucie.

At the centre of the exhibition, is a suspended installation of layered translucent panels, acrylic pours and thread traces the evolving relationship between us through five life phases. A series of companion works offers fragments of memory, grounding the installation in the people, places and moments that shaped our lives.

According to the pair, the exhibit is not an attempt to reconcile the past or arrive at a single interpretation of it. Instead, “it reflects on how understanding evolves through time, distance and reflection and on what remains as we move through life’s many changes.”
