dear friends, Science comes alive at Orlando Science Center. Within these pages, you’ll see just how. Through exhibits, demonstrations, events, camps, and workshops both within and outside our walls, everyone involved with the Orlando Science Center is dedicated to our mission: inspire science learning for life.

Fiscal year 2013 was one of great achievement and impact. The Science Center concluded its thirteenth consecutive fiscal year with a surplus.

Annual revenue reached $9 million - the second highest it’s been since our current facility opened in 1997. Ever mindful of our past struggles, we are working toward substantial operating reserves to sustain the organization.

We currently have an operating reserve of $670,000 and a separate capital reserve of $290,000, which is invested back into our visitor experiences.

Our attendance soared to just under 414,000 - the greatest number since our grand opening year in 1997. By fiscal year’s end, our membership base surged to more than 7,600 households - also, the best since our grand opening year. We’ve experienced gains in attendance every year for the past five years, representing an average of 45% overall growth - an amazing number during a time when “flat is the new up.”

Plus, the Science Center attained Gold Level LEED Certification, the first nonprofit in Florida and the first existing building in the City of Orlando to achieve that distinction. The enhancements in energy efficiency and alternative energy are already making a huge impact. We are able to demonstrate the importance of environmental sustainability to our visitors and members, while also reducing our carbon footprint and utility costs.

Electricity usage has been reduced by 50%, water usage by 84% and gas usage by 67%.

We are very proud of these successes. They have made us a stronger resource for our community, but there is so much more work to be done. In fiscal year 2013, 95,000 youth were inspired during field trip visits and offsite programs at schools and community centers. But that pales in comparison to

the scores of students and teachers struggling every day with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects; and the employers who are desperately seeking qualified workers in STEM industries.

Studies show that 80% of what our children learn comes from outside the classroom. Informal learning resources like the Orlando Science Center are vital. Together with academia, government and industry, science centers like ours give youth a fighting chance at success in school; and fuel the possibilities of dynamic careers in tomorrow’s technological workforce.

In 1955, a passionate group of volunteers came together to share their love of science by building the Orlando Science Center’s foundation. We continue to honor their legacy 58 years later with everything we do. We extend our sincere appreciation to the many community partners, volunteers, individuals and families that have stepped forward to propel our mission.

star wars®: where science meets imagination

Presented by

The Science Center welcomed blockbuster exhibit Star Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination for a seven-month engagement that was visited by 92,524 Science Center members and guests.

Developed by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with

Lucasfilm Ltd. and presented by Bose Corporation©, the 10,000 squarefoot exhibit explored the fantasy technologies depicted in the Star Wars films, as well as the real science behind them and the current research that may someday lead to real-life versions of the technologies seen in the film series.

corrosion: the silenT menace

Corrosion: The Silent Menace exhibit opened in March 2013, and explores the natural phenomena that lead to corrosion and material degradation. The exhibit also features hands-on activities to inspire the next generation of corrosion engineers.

Presented by the U.S. Department of Defense Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office and the University of Akron, the exhibit features narration by actor LeVar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Roots, Reading Rainbow), and showcases 3D Mapping technology to visualize corrosion, interactive

X-Box Kinect game play, corrosion engineering career exploration, and even scientific investigation of real NASA artifacts.

The exhibit is on display at Orlando Science Center through spring 2014.

OTRONICON

Otronicon celebrated its 8th year in 2013 with more than 7,800 attendees and more than 20 participating industry partners, who joined the Science Center to celebrate the role interactive technology plays in the way we live, learn, work and play. This year’s Otronicon showcased the

latest technologies from multiple industries including military and medical simulation, video games, and digital media. Not only did guests get to interact with incredible and emerging technologies, but they also had the opportunity to explore STEM careers through workshops

and panels led by industry professionals.

digital adventure theater: A National Geographic Experience

The 226-seat, Digital Adventure Theater: A National Geographic Experience was renovated and debuted in December 2012 to feature 3D digital film content.

Guests now experience cuttingedge 3D technology every day with the theater’s educational documentaries and Hollywood

features. Films are presented in stunning, immersive 3D and ultrahigh definition 4k resolution.

In May 2013, the Orlando Science Center partnered with National Geographic Cinema Ventures, allowing the Science Center a first look at films in development and

access to one of the world’s largest giant-screen film libraries that includes award-winning films in 2D and 3D digital formats. Orlando Science Center is the premiere location for National Geographic films with exclusivity in Central Florida.

With a curriculum based on the standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Florida Department of Education, the Orlando Science Center Preschool provides a world-class learning facility and environment that identifies and meets individual

learning styles, while stimulating progression in science, math, literacy, music, art, and motor development.

STEM INITIATIVES

DESTINATION STEM

50 Memorial Middle School students participated in a 20-week, afterschool workshop program focused on STEM disciplines and career opportunities in engineering and modeling/simulation. Student tests scores improved by almost 35% at the end of the program.

Science matters to our future! Not every student is going to become a scientist but all students need a basic foundation in science and math to be better able to function in our increasingly complex society.

Orlando Science Center Science Literacy Program

Through in-school and after school workshops, 1,068 students and teachers benefited from science career exploration, student enrichment, and teacher professional development. Funding provided by CHASE.

STEM INITIATIVES

OUC A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Project

These in-class workshops reach every 5th grade student in OUC’s coverage area. Annually, 8,000 students are engaged in the program’s learning activities in the areas of renewable energy and water conservation. Funding provided by Orlando Utilities Commission.

STEM FIELD TRIPS

GROW HEALTHY

Grow Healthy creates healthier communities by teaching students and families about healthy cooking, nutrition, and encouraging them to take control of wellness. Results from program pre- and posttests show nearly 20% gains in knowledge and 95% of students reporting positive attitudes toward nutrition. Funding provided by Walmart Foundation.

Students in grades K-8 participated in the Science Center’s STEM Field Trips. Featuring in-depth design challenges based on fundamental engineering principles, more than 2,900 students engaged in various challenges during a hands-on Discovery Lab and facilitated exhibit experiences. Funding for many STEM Field Trips provided by Siemens.

More than 70,000 children and families benefited from the Community Request Fund, which provides scholarships for free or reduced price Science Center experiences.

Our pilot program for Science for All Family Memberships granted more than 120 significantly discounted family memberships to local families facing financial hardship.

The Science Center awarded more than $5,000 in full and partial camp scholarships to ensure children and youth, whose families expressed significant need, were still able to experience a safe, fun, and captivating camp experience at the Science Center.

Orlando Science Center’s special events continue to raise funds and awareness through the generosity of corporate and individual donors.

In fiscal 2013, Science Center special events garnered more than $314,345 in support of our mission to inspire science learning for life.

Launched in summer 2013, Science Night Live is a fun night out for adults (21+) to enjoy all that the Science Center offers. More than 500 guests attended the first event and explored the Crosby Observatory; engaged in hands-on science demonstrations; viewed a 3D film; were fascinated by a special guest lecturer; played in the

traveling and permanent exhibits; and enjoyed special culinary delights and adult beverages.
