DEAR FRIENDS

THANK YOU for your ongoing support and passion for the Orlando Science Center. Since 1955, our organization has been dedicated to “inspiring science learning for life.” From the earliest days when there were just a handful of dedicated volunteers doing science demonstrations in public spaces because we had no physical home to reaching over half a million people this year, Orlando Science Center continues to grow as a force for science education.

This past year, Orlando Science Center has achieved significant growth and continues to strengthen its focus as a vital partner for area schools, government and industry. Our Unlock Science comprehensive campaign is moving forward, helping the Science Center gain momentum to expand and better serve our community’s educational needs. Capital improvements like our lobby renovation and new Science Store are laying the foundation for New KidsTown, a permanent exhibit planned to open late 2016.

Our organization has advanced thanks to a solid strategic plan with a commitment to quality, focused leadership, an involved board of trustees and committed partnerships. We have experienced 72% total attendance growth over the last six years. As we near the close of our 60th Anniversary year, Orlando Science Center is looking ahead to meet the growing needs of our evolving community. The Science Center is committed to helping make STEM concepts come to life for our families, teachers and students so they see the important connections science makes in their classroom lessons, careers and lives. As Central Florida evolves as a hub for technological innovation, experiences at the Science Center can engage youth that will fill the pipeline for tomorrow’s workforce.

In addition to our New KidsTown expansion, which will engage preschool aged children and their parents in STEM discovery, future plans for the Science Center focus on expanding areas in nature and sustainability, health and wellness, simulation and immersive technologies as well as the development of a STEM Discovery Center. The new STEM Discovery Center area will house all the Science Center’s STEM initiatives both onsite and offsite and include a tinkering exhibit for hands-on exploration and invention.

Orlando Science Center is fully embracing these changes and is continuing to look for new ways to lead. The last 60 years have positioned us for this next phase of growth. We are grateful that you have joined us for these first steps toward the next 60 years.

ANNIVERSARY 3

TO COMMEMORATE our 60th Anniversary, Orlando Science Center premiered the blockbuster “Mummies of the World: The Exhibition.” This stunning display, which is a blend of science and history, features the largest collection of real mummies ever assembled. The exhibit is generating phenomenal buzz, helping us surpass half a million visitors in total attendance for the fiscal year.

Sixty has never looked so good! From its humble beginnings, Orlando Science Center has grown to be a focal point for education and exploration in our community. After six decades serving the greater Central Florida community, Orlando Science Center has a great story to tell and it doesn’t stop here. Our organization has a passion and a plan to inspire science learning for life for many years to come.

SINCE 2010, the Science Center has experienced 72% total attendance growth and its membership base surged to almost 10,000 households – our highest numbers since 1997. In 2014, revitalization plans to meet the growing needs of our community, increase impact and further create robust experiences were announced. The multi-year, multi-million dollar comprehensive campaign will focus on the National STEM learning priority, through a STEM Discovery Center, and attention to early childhood, health

and wellness, nature and sustainability and simulation and immersive technologies. Renovations began to create a more efficient and welcoming admissions area in the front lobby as well as an attractive new science store. The Science Center continues to grow and our next big project is New KidsTown, a permanent new exhibit. This will serve as a launching pad for new dreams with state of the art exhibits and experiences crafted by early childhood learning experts.

It is estimated to open in late 2016.

UNLOCK SCIENCE

TOURING EXHIBITS TOURING EXHIBITS offer Orlando Science Center an opportunity to provide visitors with a rotating slate of engaging content around a variety of science themes. Exhibits promote skill building in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and communication while presenting hands-on activities often themed around iconic characters from children’s literature and television. These exhibits also present an opportunity for the Science Center 5

to broaden its audience by presenting diverse content like live bats or ancient mummies.

For example, this year, Dora and Diego: Let’s explore gave children and their families the opportunity to engage in problem-solving and active play. Spanish vocabulary was incorporated throughout the exhibit to be inclusive of all families.

MAKER FAIRE ORLANDO

AFTER TWO YEARS being designated as a Mini Maker Faire, Orlando’s premiere event for Do It Yourself (DIY) enthusiasts was awarded featured status and was expanded to a two-day extravaganza. Maker Faire Orlando, as it is now known, shares this distinction with only 12 other Featured Maker Faires worldwide in cities like Paris, Tokyo and Rome!

In partnership with the Maker Effect Foundation, Maker

Faire Orlando is a family-friendly community celebration featuring local DIY science, art, rockets, robots, crafts, hands-on activities and more. Almost doubling the previous year’s attendance and expanding into the park, the event hosted nearly 10,000 attendees and enjoyed more than 200 Maker exhibits.

OTRONICON

FOR THE TENTH consecutive year, multiple industry partners joined Orlando Science Center to celebrate interactive technology’s role in how we live, learn, work and play during Otronicon v.10.

Partners including Lockheed Martin, EA SPORTS, Walt Disney World Resort, Florida Hospital for Children and University of Central Florida gathered to demonstrate Orlando’s impact on the world of simulation, education, training, health care, entertainment and more.

Otronicon attracted more than 12,000 guests for all four days. The event has the opportunity to inspire interest in science and tech careers through the appeal of video games, interactive technology and virtual reality.

Workshops, speakers and panel discussions were available to attendees to engage with industry professionals across military, medical, sports and entertainment industries.

Visitors experienced cutting-edge simulators that promoted how video game technology is being used as a training and design tool in the STEM fields.

Performances by Arc Attack elevated the tenth anniversary celebration with the combination of music and science demonstrated through musical notes played through electricity generated by Tesla coils.

PAPER GLIDER CHALLENGE/ REALM FLYER JUST PLANE AWESOME! The Paper Glider Challenge is a STEM-based learning activity in which people design a paper glider to achieve a goal.

From beginning to end, vistors engage in the engineering design process: ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve. This activity allows people to experience the four principles of flight including weight, lift, drag, and thrust.

Thanks to the efforts of the Retired Employers Association of Lockheed Martin (REALM) - working with our visitor

experience department, a new flight simulator was also rolled out that depicted what flight was like in the early 20th century. The Glenn L. Martin bi-plane flight simulator creates a fun and educational experience while also celebrating Martin’s legacy as an aviation innovator.

STEM DAY AT THE CAPITOL

STEM DAY highlights the need and initiates the conversation of where science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the state of Florida and the country must go.

This past April, the Orlando Science Center led corporate partners and fellow science centers at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee to highlight the importance of STEM education and how strategic partnerships fill the STEM talent pipeline.

Participants were stationed inside and outside the Capitol building with experiments, flight simulators and more. State legislators engaged in hands-on activities while discussing the importance of STEM education as it relates to growing Florida’s technological workforce.

PRACTITIONERS AND RESEARCHERS alike have stressed the need for increased training and resources in preschool science education. STEM provides a hands-on approach to learning that gives children powerful means to explore and interpret the world around them.

New programs this year include Project World of Wonder, in partnership with Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts with funding by PNC’s Grow up Great initiative, and Ignite Discovery: STEM Foundations, in partnership with Osceola County Early Learning Coalition with funding by Walt Disney World Resort. These efforts have allowed us to reach low-income preschool students, teachers, and families with hands-on learning and the resources they need to thrive.

Through these programming efforts we have served 4,000 children, teachers and families. Our Little Learner Workshops sponsored by the O’Neil Foundation, provide preschool students and their parents opportunities to engage in hands-on STEM activities.

The Orlando Science Center Preschool model features an environment unmatched by any other preschool in Central Florida. We have a long tradition of offering fun and educational experiences designed to enrich children in a safe, hands-on STEM based environment. Children not only benefit from a developmentally appropriate learning space, including hands-on activities and skill building centers, but also the diverse and content-rich STEM experiences to provide them with the building blocks to succeed on their educational journey.

CAMPS AND CLASSES

The Orlando Science Center summer camps reached more than 35,770 children from preschool to 9th grade.

SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS AND OFFSITE PROGRAMS

Programs and training onsite and offsite impacted over 120,000 students and teachers.

ELEMENTARY Project AWESOME, in partnership with Orlando Utilities Commission, includes classroom workshops designed to engage every 5th grade student in OUC’s service area. These 90-minute STEM-based workshops focus on renewable energies and water conservation. Students are immersed in real-world environmental problems that demand innovative solutions.

In-classroom workshops for Project AWESOME have reached 48,779 5th graders since 2010.

STEM School Field Trips, in partnership with Duke Energy, engage students in fun, hands-on learning activities. The field trips include a series of engineering design challenges that hone students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills in a setting that fosters collaboration, communication and creativity.

MIDDLE Destination STEM, sponsored by Siemens, Universal, Northrop Grumman and Bright House Networks, is an intensive 18 week program for middle school students in school or afterschool.

Each 90-minute workshop focuses on key STEM disciplines and career pathways brought to life with hands-on activities and design challenges.

Workshops include exciting hands-on experiences like: Intro to Soldering, Robotics, Rockets, and Lasers.

Students who have participated in Destination STEM improved their test scores by almost 35%.

HIGH SCHOOL The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own real businesses. Orlando Science Center is proud to partner with Orlando, Inc. as the first science center in the country to facilitate this incredible program.

The Science Literacy Program, sponsored by Chase, provides professional development for high school biology teachers in Orange County Public Schools. These workshops provided teachers with kits and labs designed to meet hard to teach standards tested on the biology end of course exam for high school students - a mandatory course to pass high school.

4,200 students and teachers have been reached through the Science Literacy Program since 2011.

STEM PROGRAMS 12

ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER currently nearly 10,000 member households, and we’re growing more every day. But not all families can afford to purchase a family membership. The Science For All program provides reduced priced memberships to families who qualify, based on financial need. The response from families in the program has been tremendous.

The Science Center has partnered with organizations like Walmart Foundation, Macy’s, Publix Foundation and the Martin Andersen – Gracia Andersen Foundation to create and fund Science for All. Over the past five years, support from local Walmart stores has enabled guests to enjoy all of our exhibits, giant screen and 3D films, and live programs for the significantly discounted price of $5. The Science Center has offered 20 Five Dollar Days, which have served over 75,000 visitors. On March 1, 2015, a Five Dollar Day attracted just over 6,500 visitors, the greatest single-day admission attendance in our facility’s history!

“Our young family feels so fortunate to have been part of the Science for All program this past year.

We live on a very tight budget and would not have been able to experience the Science Center otherwise.

When my six year-old son began to struggle in Kindergarten last year, I became very concerned about the future of his education and how I would be able to help him.

We were at the science center one afternoon when he became very engaged in the Engineering exhibit. He was eagerly playing for quite some time, when we were approached by a volunteer. The volunteer was as a retired engineer who proceeded to tell me that my son has an “engineering brain.” I was able to see that he has a strong desire and excitement about learning.

Orlando Science Center grew to 9,839 households!

VOLUNTEERS

• 1,637 volunteers • 46,952 volunteer hours Orlando Science Center volunteers range from 13 to over 90 years old and bring a passion for science and enthusiasm for volunteering to our museum. Compared to the previous fiscal year, we had 200 more volunteers who each provided an average of 100 hours! There are some volunteers that have been volunteering for more than 40 years.

Irene Morris will be celebrating 50 years of volunteer service with the Orlando Science Center in January 2016. She comes each week to volunteer in NatureWorks, encouraging our guests to learn about Florida’s unique flora and fauna. You will always find her with a smile on her face!

MORE THAN JUST KIDS EVENTS LIKE SCIENCE NIGHT LIVE provide adults 21 and up exposure to science center exhibits and demonstrations in a festive atmosphere with guest speakers and activities. Crowds turned out for notable speakers like forensic scientists Dr. Jan Garavaglia (TV’s Dr. G) and Dr. Kathy Reichs (writer of the Bones novels, which was the inspiration for the Fox TV series), Astronaut Robert Crippen and Mummy Expert Dr. Heather GilFrerking. Otronicon also offers panel discussions and guest speakers to further engage adults in topics like astrophotography and technology trends.

A Young Professionals Advisory Board was formed this past year to help the science center reach young adults. The group hosts social events for adults, ages 21 to 35, with proceeds benefiting the Science For All fund. Events include regular cocktail mixers, as well as a golf tournament and social hours at events like Otronicon and Science Night Live.

THE SCIENCE CHALLEGE, Presented

Presented by Fred & Gayle Curtis, motivates students in grades 5-8 to stretch the capacity of their unlimited imaginations, and challenges students to transform ordinary and found objects into a kinetic system. Awards are given based on problem-solving, best use of science and mechanical innovation. The Best in Fair teammates share a $500 prize. Best Use of Science and Most Innovative teams each share a $250 prize. The Best in Fair team’s sponsoring teacher also wins $250!

by Bright House Networks, encourages excellence in science education and provides an intermediate event between the County Science Fairs and the State Science Fair. Middle and highschool students are invited by winning first place in the physical science competitions in county Science Fairs in the eight surrounding counties (Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, and Volusia). With winners in each junior and senior category, the Best in Fair earns a $2,000 scholarship for college.

THE DR. NELSON YING SCIENCE COMPETITION, Presented by Dr. Nelson

Ying, encourages students to help humanity through scientific research. High school students submit research papers to be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges. Five finalists are invited to participate in a three-day, expensespaid event in April, concluded by an awards luncheon to announce the “Ying Prize” of $5,000 to the student, $1,000 to their teacher and $1,000 to their principal!
