Lullaby

Listening to Becoming on Audible, I travel back to my childhood room—

My head rested in my mother’s lap, “The Famous Five by Enid Blyton. Chapter Two – ‘The Strange Cousin’.”

“Mummy, I have short hair. I can swim as fast as a boy. I don't like playing with dolls. Am I strange? Should I have a boy’s name?”

“No, Rosebud, don’t you see there’s a whole chapter dedicated to you? You are going to bloom no matter where you are planted.”

She continued reading the chapter.

Her voice plays like a lullaby in my ears. I sleep like a child in her mother’s lap, my AirPods slip out.
