A Word from the Chief

Fellow members of the First Pacific community,

Much has happened since our last issue half a year ago. On First Pacific’s earnings front, contribution from operations rose 21% to a record high in the first half of 2022 at US$302.5 million on improved performances by all the companies First Pacific is invested in. PacificLight Power saw its contribution rise more than 10-fold on surging demand for electricity in Singapore while Indofood and PLDT delivered their highest-ever revenues on continuing growth in demand for food products and data services. At Head Office, net interest expense declined 5% to US$24.4 million notwithstanding the worsening interest rate environment. As a result of all this, recurring profit rose 26% to a record high US$263.3 million. Our US$100 million share repurchase program is well under way to enhance returns to shareholders with spending of US$38.3 million from April 2021 to early November 2022. To top it all off, our investee companies forecast higher earnings over the medium term on increasing consumer purchasing power.

Over in the Philippines, Maya Bank is growing at a stellar pace, passing the one-million customer mark and registering a 10 billion deposit balance in just five months after its public launch. PLDT also launched the US-Transpacific Jupiter Cable system, which expands the Philippines’ hyperscaler capability. PLDT’s leadership was reinforced with PLDT Home winning Ookla’s Speedtest

Award for the fifth year running and PLDT and Smart listed among the world’s best telco service providers at the 2022 World Communication Awards.

Indofood continues to launch innovative food products, such as a truffle-flavoured potato chip in Chitato Lite Truffle, a healthy sterilized milk product, Indomilk Susu Steril, and a tasty and healthy new Supermi noodle product.

MPIC unveiled new branding for Metro Pacific Healthcare as The Heart of Filipino Healthcare. MPIC also marks an infrastructure milestone with the near-completion of the North Luzon Expressway (“NLEX”) Connector, which is set to significantly reduce local travel time.

Group companies in the Philippines explored new sustainability frontiers at their second top-level Sustainability Summit. Indofood Chief Marketing Officer and Director Axton Salim also addressed sustainability and resilience at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

And finally, I would like to wish you all a very happy and healthy Christmas with your friends and family. As we put the experience of pandemic behind us, let us remember in this festive season to cherish what we have and to take care of and support our loved ones and our communities.

PLDT launches US-Transpacific Jupiter Cable system

This August, PLDT celebrated the activation of the Philippines’ newest international submarine cable, the US-Transpacific Jupiter Cable system. As the country’s fastest, direct data cable link to the US and Japan, Jupiter will triple PLDT’s international capacity to about 60 Terabit/s.

Submarine fiber optic cables are among the most critical components of the internet’s infrastructure, serving as the backbone connecting countries and enabling digital services across the globe.

AN INVESTMENT IN NEXT-GENERATION INDUSTRIES

The 14,000-kilometer Jupiter Cable system connects the Philippines directly from PLDT’s cable landing station in Daet, Camarines Norte to Japan and the US West Coast. PLDT’s investment in Jupiter responds to the rapidly growing requirements for digital services and nextgeneration technologies.

EXPANDING CABLE AND FIBER OPTIC NETWORKS

PLDT has extensive participation in 16 international submarine cable networks and is set to expand further with the completion of two more major international cable systems - the Asia Direct Cable (“ADC”) and the APRICOT cable system, set for completion in the next two years. It also operates the most expansive fiber optic network among local ISPs at 803,000 kilometers linking all islands in the archipelago with fiber connectivity.

“The PLDT Group takes pride in leading our nation’s digital advancement, made possible through dynamic synergies with government and private sector partners,” PLDT and Smart President and CEO Alfredo S Panlilio said as he acknowledged guests at the launch event.

Among those present were PLDT Chairman Manuel V Pangilinan, Department of Information Communication Technology Secretary Atty. Major partners of corporate business unit PLDT Enterprise, its ICT arm ePLDT, and international business unit PLDT Global Corporation were also in attendance.

RAMPING UP THE GLOBAL TRADE IN DIGITAL SERVICES

“Our investment in Jupiter will exponentially boost the Philippines’ international capacity, ramp up the global trade of digital services, and propel the nation’s digital economy, while increasing internet speed and reliability for Filipinos,” Panlilio explained.

“This milestone immensely strengthens our thrust in helping us position the Philippines as the next hyperscaler hub of Asia-Pacific and enriching the country’s Hyperscale Ecosystem,” said PLDT and Smart FVP and Head of Enterprise Business Group Jojo G Gendrano. “Our network of VITRO data centers, with our newest to be built in Sta. MPTC SETS SIGHTS ON VITAL MILESTONE

The Philippines’ Metro Manila can look forward to an alleviation in traffic congestion - and a welcome boost to the logistics sector.

NLEX Corporation announced in late August 2022 that the first fivekilometer section of the NLEX Connector between Caloocan Interchange on C3 Road and the future España Interchange in Manila is nearly complete.

A SWIFTER DELIVERY OF GOODS

NLEX is a unit of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (“MPTC”), the toll road arm of the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (“MPIC”).

NLEX Corporation President and General Manager J Luigi L Bautista remarked, “We are pleased to note that this vital infrastructure project aimed at easing travel achieves another milestone as it reaches 80 percent completion. This inspires optimism for the logistics sector since in a few months’ time, truckers will

have a 24/7 alternative route which will enable unimpeded delivery of goods.”

REDUCING TRAVEL TIMES BY 60%

The NLEX Connector is targeting to serve around 35,000 motorists per day. The four-lane, all-vehicle class elevated expressway runs mostly above the alignment of the Philippine National Railways and spans eight kilometers. It terminates at the vicinity of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila. It is designed to significantly reduce travel time from NLEX to South Luzon by at least 60 percent and expected to enhance the journey between international airports such as Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Clark.

A public-private partnership (“PPP”) project between the Department of Public Works and Highways (“DPWH”) and NLEX Corporation, this new road will stimulate development between Metro Manila and its surrounding provinces. It will greatly improve the mobility of the supply chain and logistics sectors, which are integral to the Philippines’ economic growth and competitiveness. <<

A new era for Filipino healthcare

Metro Pacific Hospitals rebrand to Metro Pacific Health

ACCESSIBLE, LOWERCOST QUALITY HEALTHCARE

Over the past 15 years, MPH has built a network of 19 hospitals and plans to expand to over 40 hospitals within a decade.

Metro Pacific Hospitals unveiled its rebrand on 12 October 2022 at a brand equity launch event in Manila, the Philippines. The launch reflects the beginning of a new era of modernized, high-quality patient-centric healthcare.

The newly-branded Metro Pacific Health (“MPH”) promises to be the “Heart of Filipino Healthcare”. The brand’s new identity includes a fresh logo, tagline, video campaigns and even a song.

MPH Chairman Manuel V Pangilinan noted the significance of the new identity in his address, “Today, we rename Metro Pacific Hospitals to Metro Pacific Health – symbolizing not only a wider spectrum of investments in health services, but also our enhanced mission of responding to the most pressing concern of our people.”

As the country’s largest integrated private healthcare network, MPH is guided by compassionate principles and its key goals are:  Lower prices for the everyday Filipino  Accessible delivery channels beyond hospitals – from virtual care online and through apps to mobile care and home care  World-class medical care in the Philippines  Compassionate service that puts patients first

STARTING WITH COMPASSION FROM WITHIN

MPH President Augie Palisoc Jr. explained, “The Philippines has many talented doctors and medical professionals. They just need a well-equipped and well-managed hospital to practice in. By starting with compassion from within - through employee development and support - MPH can provide the high-standard Filipino care that the masses deserve.”

Indofood at the World Economic Forum

2022 meeting themed Preparing for the Post-COVID Era

It has been more than two years since the World Economic Forum (“WEF”) last held an onsite Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. The WEF Annual Meeting 22 – 26 May was held in-person. It was shaped by six thematic pillars: economic rebalancing, society and equity, global health, nature and climate, innovation and governance.

The Forum believes that the pandemic - despite its devastation - also demonstrated just how significant advances can be unlocked when science, technology, government and the private sector act together to respond to global challenges.

STRONG PRESENCE FROM INDONESIA

Indonesia, who hosts the G20 presidency, demonstrated its commitment to WEF by sending eight ministers and delegates to meet with stakeholders. Indofood also plays a key role as a member of WEF and in showcasing export products at the Indonesia Pavilion. Indofood Chief Marketing Officer and Director Axton Salim represented Indofood during the Forum and participated in key events.

FOOD AT THE FRONT AND CENTRE Salim attended the CEO meeting in addressing Food, Land Use and

Nature in a changing world. Food was front and centre in the discussions about the interconnected crises of climate, food and energy. These global shocks have reached a critical tipping point.

STRENGTHENING RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Public-private collaboration, committed leadership and collective action are key to strengthening the resilience of agri-food systems. These advances enable innovation and investments to provide farmers with the means to produce regeneratively. Countries also require appropriate incentives to achieve sustainable, healthy, efficient and equitable food systems.

Axton Salim also shared his views on the topic of sustainability for GenZ and Millennials in emerging countries, at the Sustainable Generation event hosted by Credit Suisse. <<

Meralco uplifts deserving students

One Meralco Foundation (“OMF”) has long supported empowerment through education. Among its initiatives this year, it celebrated two cohorts of deserving students with higher-education scholarships.

SUPPORTING FUTURE PUBLICSECTOR DOCTORS

Four aspiring doctors from Pasig City are set to pursue their studies at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health through the support of OMF and the local government of Pasig. The exceptional students hurdled the stringent screening process for the scholarship program which grants them the financial support for a five-year joint degree of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration in the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, beginning in the academic year 2022-2023. OMF will cover the scholars’ full tuition fees and miscellaneous fees; while the Pasig LGU will pay their recurring expenses such as uniform allowance, food, and transportation costs.

Upon successful completion of their degree and passing the licensure exam, the students will return to Pasig City to serve in public hospitals.

Meralco Chairman Manuel V Pangilinan said Meralco is honored to be part of the journey of the aspiring doctors, adding that the scholarship grant is part of the continuing commitment to support the medical

profession and to contribute to improving the country’s healthcare services. “We continue to expand our commitment to the people, and we are very happy to support local government units like Pasig because I think that’s where the best partnerships are found,” Pangilinan noted.

WOMEN ENABLED TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS

In September 2022, OMF awarded 15 female freshmen students from the Philippines’ Laguna Municipality’s Don Bosco CollegeCanlubang with a scholarship that will allow them to pursue their dreams of becoming skilled electrical technicians.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees and allowances for students

who will take the Technical Vocational Education Training Program for Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Mechatronics. The program also offers four months’ on-the-job training for the students and the opportunity to join the Meralco workforce. This is part of Meralco’s Gender Diversity and Inclusion Program, MBrace, that aims to provide inclusive opportunities that empowers women, and eventually increase the ratio of women in the company to 40% by 2030. MBrace’s aims are aligned with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (“UN SDG”) 5 on Gender Equality and UN SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities; and Meralco’s commitment to the UN Global Compact’s Principle 6 on Elimination of Discrimination in Employment. <<

MPIF’S SHORE IT UP! CHAMPIONS MABINI

The Philippines’ coastal and marine ecosystems have been hard hit by the pandemic in recent years. Communities that rely on ecotourism have suffered –as has the environment.

Fortunately, for the marine ecology of Mabini in the province of Batangas, help is at hand.

SAFEGUARDING LOCAL MARINE RESOURCES

Shore it Up! (“SIU”) is the flagship environmental program of Metro Pacific Investments Foundation (“MPIF”). It is currently celebrating 15 years of championing the environment and launched an extensive underwater and coastal clean-up in Mabini. The event was organized for the International Coastal Clean-up Day on 17 September 2022.

In partnership with the Mabini local government led by Municipal Mayor Atty. Nilo Villanueva and supporters such as environmental and waste management company Basic Environmental Systems & Technologies, Inc. (“BEST”), and Pascual Lab, MPIF brought together local dive experts, dive enthusiasts and business owners to take responsibility for the state of their coastal and marine ecosystems.

The Resort Owners Association of Mabini (“ROAM)”, and BEST, collected over 100 kgs of trash on launch day. Wrappers and sachets, beverage bottles, single-use plastics, plastic pieces, and plastic bottle caps were the top five types of waste collected. BEST, who is set to become the Municipality’s partner in waste management, collected the recyclable trash upon proper weighing and segregation. The waste obtained from the clean-up will be converted into environmental points for MPIC.

Over 300 volunteers from 25 resorts committed to continuing their own underwater and coastal clean-ups for the rest of the month.

LIFE BELOW WATER, LIFE ON LAND “The Municipality of Mabini is grateful that MPIF, through Shore It Up!, never fails to protect areas that are hubs of diverse marine ecology and prosper through ecotourism,” said Mayor Villanueva. “The work that they do, and more importantly, the work we can do together, is a testament to the unmatched value of collaboration for a mutual purpose.”

“As we join the rest of the world to fight for trash free seas, we also safeguard our local marine resources with SIU programs on mangrove protection and propagation, marine protected areas, and environmental awareness,” said MPIF President Melody del Rosario.

SIU’s initiatives are in line with MPIC’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDG”), particularly SDG #14 Life Below Water; #15 Life on Land; and #17 Partnerships for the Goals. <<
