Origin’s diverse portfolio of outdoor furniture is manufactured in the UK from recycled steel. Providing simple solutions to make the most of outdoor spaces. The range includes chairs, stools, sofas, ottoman, benches and tables in a variety of different sizes, colours and styles. From the ultra thin sleek tops of Vine and Graphic to the slender wire seat of Contour and the simplicity of Ratio to the utility of Stripe.

Origin’s outdoor furniture has a clearly defined modern aesthetic combining precise design, clean-lines and graphic shapes. Merging functional and aesthetic qualities for diverse applications, from trendy urban spots to modern veranders and traditional gardens. All products are finished with the latest powder coating technology making them suited to testing outdoor conditions and are easy to clean, so can be enjoyed in every season. All seating can be supplied with seat pads and cushions made from weather-resistant fabric.

Contour

Contour is a collection of chairs defined by a series of distinctive lines. The construction marries a bold tubular frame with a slender wire seat, in a design which is both deceptively simple and surprisingly comfortable. All chairs in the range stack efficiently and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, with a wide range of applications from cafe’s and restaurants, to garden and office spaces.

I have always been intrigued by wire chairs, they have an interesting sculptural quality and a transparent look which is unique. They also function well outdoors, and especially in the UK as rainwater doesn’t have anywhere to collect.

However, I have always found them busy looking chairs with lots going on and by their nature aren’t particularly comfortable. So this gave us a brief to work towards, which was to design a range of wire chairs that had a simpler form and more comfortable seat shape.

With Contour our aim from the start was to create a range of outdoor steel chairs with a simple form and a comfortable seat shape.

Contour is constructed of a bold tubular frame with a delicate wire seat. The legs go up, along the seat and form this big comfortable curve around the back. The wire seat starts flat at the front and becomes incrementally more curved towards the backrest.

This transition of curves from horizontal to vertical is unique to the chair and fundamental to it’s success. It was all about getting the negative space to balance so it works visually, but also so it contributes to this large surface area creating a softer and more comfortable seat shape.

Circular Steel Design

In fact it is the most recycled material in the world, and whilst it may not be a new material it can be re-imagined into new forms, suitable for modern life. This is why we are building a diverse portfolio of steel based products, which are made from recycled material and are designed to be easily recycled.

Origin’s steel products are made from a combination 56% recycled and 44% virgin material. This is thought to be the most sustainable ratio, as demand for steel outstrips the amount that is recycled. Buying steel on the basis of high recycled content does not stimulate further recycling but instead increases the cost.

Steel is a great material, it is strong, inexpensive and endlessly recyclable.

Steel has many great characteristics, although it’s best I feel is that it can be repeatedly recycled without any impact on the quality of the material. I like the idea that the steel in our chairs has metamorphosised over the years serving a variety of different functions. A chair now but may have been a car panel, structural beam or hand rail, this to me is circular design.

Product longevity is also extremely important to sustainability, designing products to last not only physically but from an aesthetical stand point, rather than following any fashion trends. I believe it’s important to focus on material, structural and functional qualities when designing a product and to allow a pure aesthetic to emerge organically.

The Vine collection consists of a broad range of steel tables designed specifically to compliment Contour, Origin’s outdoor seating range. The construction marries a thin steel top with a bold tubular leg design inspired by organic forms. The range is well suited to outdoor environments using the latest protective primer and powder coating technology. The collection is available in 5 different colours and is ideally suited for gardens, terraces, cafés, and outdoor office areas.

When going through concepts

The Vine collection was in fact developed for a specific project, after The RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) ordered 300 of Origin’s Contour chairs but couldn’t find a suitable table to pair with. When going through concepts I liked a drawing in which the table

legs looked like garden vines, growing and intertwining. This very quickly became the preferred route by all and then developed into a broad range of tables, providing suitability for the 4 heights of Origin’s Contour chairs and stools.

The aim was to maintain the sole use of steel throughout the products. Providing material continuity between tables and chairs ensuring a consistent aesthetic, durability and colour options. Mono-materiality also makes recycling products at the end of life more simple, with steel being the most recycled material in the world it can easily be melted down and formed into new steel products in a more circular approach.

Our products are designed and manufactured in the UK, something that has been instrumental to the development of Vine. With product development being such an iterative and rigorous process, building close manufacturing relationships and working in a collaborative way is the key to our products and commitment to quality.

RHS Bridgewater

RHS Bridgewater is the fifth RHS garden and one of the largest gardening projects undertaken in Europe in recent years. The transformation of this 154-acre green space was designed to enrich the lives of local communities and their environment for the future.

Origin’s Contour Chairs and Vine Tables were specified for the exterior cafe and restaurant areas. The chairs compliment the buildings striped facade and have a unique transparent quality which allows them to blend into the beautiful surroundings.

The Graphic collection consists of a broad range of stools, benches and tables entirely made from steel. The design features an ultra thin top made possible through a robust frame construction. Each of the products have been reduced to the essential shapes required, bringing abstract form and colour to both indoor and outdoor settings.

With Graphic our aim was to design a collection of furniture with an understated presence, that didn’t dominate a space but instilled a sense of confidence to the surroundings. The abstract shapes that make up the collection compliment green spaces, allowing plants to take centre stage.

The growing demand for outdoor spaces (forced by the pandemic), has opened our eyes to the beauty and opportunity of this often overlooked space. Nature and Plants work on a subliminal level to improve our mood and overall happiness, making us feel more peaceful in our day to day life.

A reductionist approach has been applied to The Graphic Collection, in a combination of simple geometric shapes cut from steel.

A table with stools or benches around it is a social space, a place to come together and collaborate. Creativity and spontaneous inspiration only happens when people are able to come together. We like to think of Graphic as a contemporary platform to host conversation, meetings, food and drinks, whether that be in a work or social context. Whilst the collection was designed specifically for the outdoors it works equally as well indoors, in cafeterias and break out areas.

Graphic is another expression of the core design values we are developing in the portfolio we’re building at Origin. A well designed product for me is something that has been worked on and tested over a period of time. With every iteration refining the product to its simplest form, whilst maintaining the most characterful expression of that idea.

Searching for the beauty that exists in simplicity however, isn’t always as easy as it appears. As something so simple and effortless on the outside in contrast often requires a lot of development and refinement to reach the most elegant solution.

Kampus

Kampus is Manchester’s latest garden neighbourhood, located right in the city centre. The ambitions canal side development includes the restoration of iconic Victorian warehouses, surrounded by secret streets, gardens, terraces, and independent restaurants. The development has opened up a forgotten part of the city, mixing Manchester’s industrial heritage with modern design.

Origin has recently supplied it’s latest Graphic Tables and Benches along side Contour Chairs and In-Out Tables to the projects canal side restaurant and event space. The contemporary furniture designs compliment the industrial surroundings, concrete structures and modern garden area, creating a space rich in contrast.

The Ratio collection is the result of an exercise in reductionism, to achieve the most form and comfort from the least design. The chairs and stools have a small footprint and light aesthetic, making best use of small spaces. The frame creates a minimal silhouette inspired by that of classic bentwood cafe chairs. With Ratio a more contemporary shape has been developed to suit modern domestic and commercial environments such as cafés, restaurants, gardens and dining areas.

The brief was to simplify both the manufacturing process and the aesthetic of an outdoor seating range. With the aim to design something that would compliment our existing steel product collections and provide a more cost-effective option.

At the heart of the design is a circular, concave form punched from a single sheet of steel, a manufacturing process crucial to the structural integrity of the design. The wall section around the seat adds great strength to the frame and is key to the products visual lightness.

Ratio aims to reduce an outdoor steel chair to its most fundamental parts, making each bend and every curve accountable.

Ratio’s simplicity is rooted in a monolinear approach, the thickness of the seat matching that of the tube, making all vertical and horizontal forms the same visual weight. Appearing as though an illustration of a chair drawn with simple stokes of a marker pen.

Ratio is the continuation of a journey in the reduction of design in furniture. Taking away all non-essential parts of a chair, whilst maintaining the most amount of comfort and aesthetic value. This exercise forces you to be economical with forms, concentrating the mind on only the essential aspects of a product.

The result is a sculptural product with the least amount of ‘design’ we have ever included in a chair. Most of the backrest is just air, which really opens up the space around it. To me the design is reminiscent of Japanese lettering, expressing the same curvature and elegance. I think if I saw Ratio in a Sushi bar in Soho for instance, I would have achieved what I set out with the design.

Stripe

Stripe is a collection of outdoor furniture characterised by an arrangement of functional linear holes for water drainage. The range can be used both inside and out with optional seat pads to improve overall comfort, encouraging conversation and provide a setting for casual work and social spaces. The collections all round practicality caters for a broad range of environments such as dining and lounge areas, museums, gardens, balconies and workspaces.

In Stripes case it is the linear drainage holes which shoot in all directions and change angle with every bend of the backrest. The holes and distance between them taper towards the top of the product bringing a sense of movement to the design. The range has a strong graphic presence, casting geometric shadows to extend the chair’s expression to the surroundings.

Stripe is constructed from a combination of laser cut steel plate and a tubular steel frame. These materials naturally have a strong industrial aesthetic and utilitarian design language which is still very relevant today. My job as a designer is to soften the effect of these materials, updating the shape of the various products to suit modern work and social environments.

It is really satisfying when the functional aspect of a product becomes the main focal point and characteristic of a design.

Someone mentioned that Stripe reminded them of a spatula, which I found amusing, but also quite interesting. I see this a visual stamp of approval towards the products utility and its suitability to the job. Spatulas have been around for hundreds of years with a design that is largely unchanged. They provide a platform to hold, flip and move food whilst also letting liquid to pass through the holes. Just replace the egg for a person and we have quite a humorous analogy.

Our aim with the outdoor furniture that we design at Origin is to make the products so durable they can live outdoors, yet look so good that people want to use them indoors. The same applies to Stripe with this quite unique utilitarian design language at the core of the product range, softened with additional seat pads, which add to its versatility and really bring the products to life.
